Honoring the Resting Places of Loved Ones

Honoring the Resting Places of Loved Ones

Adorning the final resting places of loved ones is a custom that has been practiced since ancient times, and in many cultures it is still done at designated points in the year, when the spirits of the dead are deemed to be roaming in the world of the living.

Most traditional grave offerings have roots in a Pagan past, and are symbolic of the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Many speak of ancient reincarnation beliefs. The wreath, sometimes adorned with flowers, is one such item. A perfect circle with no beginning and no end, it represents the wheel of life; the ever-turning cycle of birth, death, and regeneration on which we all spin.

Lanterns, candles, or other light sources are sometimes offered. These symbolize illumination of truth, and a wish to light the pathway of the spirits as they travel between worlds.

Bowls and urns, which likely held food or wine, have been found in ancient burial sites. Providing sustenance for the deceased is still practiced in Paganism today, when feasts or libations are offered to spirits on certain holidays or during specific rituals. Modern food offerings usually include apples or eggs. The apple is the symbol of eternal life in the Celtic traditions, and the egg is an ancient token of new life or of life renewed.

Items of protection are also offered to the dead by way of grave offerings. This may be something as simple as a protective stone or pentacle, or a flower or oil. Over time, folklore has taken these items, once meant to offer protection to the soul as it journeyed to new adventures, and turned them into items of protection for the living, to guard them from the marauding spirit of the one who is buried. Modern Pagans might occasionally offer mirrors, which can be used magically as portals between worlds. Mirrors express their desire that the soul escape the grave, or any other earthly bonds which tie it to the physical world, so that it may move onward.

Fresh flowers are the most frequently seen grave offerings today, and are used in many religions and cultures. Archaeologists have found many neolithic gravesites containing fossilized flowers, which they believe to symbolize the spring and rebirth.

Masks make excellent grave offerings, and death masks, either cast from the face of the deceased or crafted as a representation of a wish for the departed, are still used in many cultures, including Africa, South America, and Polynesia. These are best made from substances like wood, or food which will decompose and become part of the Earth again. Avoid plastics, which will be around longer than the grave itself.

The anointing of graves with perfumes or precious oils is a very, very old practice whose precise meaning is unclear today. It may have been done to offer homage to the deceased spirit, to protect or purify the gravesite, or in preparation for a death ritual. Olive oil was commonly used for this task in the ancient Middle East, and perfumes made of native oils were, and in some cases still are, used in Africa and the Caribbean. Modern Pagans can choose from a wide variety of essential oils with a long history of use in death rituals and spirit contact, such as olive, jasmine, patchouli, rosemary, or tuberose.

Whatever way you choose to honor the resting place of your loved ones, paying tribute to their graves links us with magical people of generations past, who saw their burial grounds as halfway points between the worlds of the living and the dead. By remembering them we forge our bonds with our Pagan past, and light our own pathways to the Otherworld.

Please add me to the health circle list for this week. Yesterday was my first
full day back at work since middle of April. While I was really tired, I am
glad that I am back. However, my legs ache a good amount today. I am still
going into work today, but can use all the positive energies I can get.

To Know, To Will, to Dare, and to Keep Silent

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

To Know, To Will, To Dare, and To Keep Silent

The phrase that I have used as the title to this article is borrowed from
ceremonial magic and contains the ingredients for a successful spell. But
what does it mean exactly?

To know means to have an intellectual and practical knowledge of what you are
doing, of the proper spellwork for a particular situation, of the proper
methods for handling difficult tasks, of the proper ways to execute your
intentions. Most importantly, it means to know what you want to accomplish.
The more concise you can make a statement of purpose, the better and more
effective your spell will be. To gain world peace is a noble goal, but one
which is beyond the scope of most practitioners. To keep drug pushers off my
block is a more realistic goal that can be accomplished.

In knowing, avoid "not" or "can't." Rather than having as your magical goal:
"To have a workplace that is not abusive and harassing," try instead "To
foster a workplace that is healthy, pleasant, and happy." Filter all spells
through your younger self before you put it into effect. That way you can
focus on the main elements of each spell--the key words and phrases and
concepts. Meanwhile, keep books on spells to foster ideas and increase what
you know. Seventy-five percent of the work in a spell comes before you start
putting up the circle. Researching and assembling the materials take up most
of the time. If it's worth doing a spell, it's worth putting in the time to
do it right. Good preparation is certainly part of "to know."

To will refers to the magical will. This is the spirit in the self that
makes it possible for you to generate enough emotional and psychic energy to
accomplish your purpose. You can be very learned and have all the spell work
lore in your head and be perfectly practiced, but you have to put your own
emotional energy into the thing, or it won't go anywhere. We all know people
who have the ideas and talk a blue streak about doing this and that project,
but when it comes down to it they have little enthusiasm for actually
accomplishing anything. The will is the energy battery you draw from when
you raise the power for the spell. If that battery is drained, or never got
charged in the first place, the thing won't go. Simple as that.

To dare means to have the gumption to actually get off your couch and do it.
You can be learned and burn with intensity, but until and unless you actually
go get the stuff, do the research and preparation, and do the spell, nothing
will happen. Sounds pretty basic, doesn't it? Well it is, yet this is where
many spells die. Talk is cheap. Action and the investment of time and
energy are what count with spellwork. Until you act, the spell will be
nothing more than a particularly vivid daydream. Yes, thoughts are real and
can have an effect on the world, but for an effective spell you have to go
through the motions. You can't wait around until you have your own private
temple and altar and a perfect relationship with your deities. Make do with
what you have; and utilize your absolute intent. Make the best of your
time, energy, and resources. Even if you can't afford actual granulated
frankincense, charcoal, and a brazier, a stick of frankincense incense will
do. If you don't have your own permanent stone altar, a nice altar cloth
spread over any convenient surface will suffice.

To keep silent is the last ingredient and just as important as the other
three. You have to be able to understand what you want and what you're
doing, have the energy to make it happen, have the gumption to get up and
actually do what's necessary, and then, once accomplished, shut up about it.
I have seen wonderful spells executed yet never come to fruition because the
person couldn't keep quiet.

There are a number of reasons for this. In order for a spell to accomplish
its purpose you have to let it go. If you are constantly talking and
dwelling on a spell, you are still tied to it and are in effect constantly
calling it back. Furthermore, there are people who may not like the idea of
your doing a spell, how you did it, what materials you used, what color robes
you wore, which books you read, or who your mentor was and where she came
from. They may hinder your spell by either consciously or subconsciously
trying to stop it. Others may just pray against you or think bad thoughts
about you or your spell. Any and all of these can blunt or deflect a spell's
energies.

Finally, it's just bad form to talk about specific spells that haven't run
their course. You can upset people generally. Many have antiquated notions
about spells and what they are meant to do. You can give people an inflated
idea of your opinion of yourself and your influence in the world. You never
know who will hear about it through the grapevine and how it will be
distorted. What is meaningful and important to you may be considered trivial
by someone else, or it may just sound that way if you aren't clear and your
audience is not paying close enough attention to grasp your intent. In the
end, it may not be harmful when you talk about spells you did in the far-off
past--particularly if you are teaching or sharing information--but in general
a good and wise rule is to keep silent. If you say nothing, you are a
hundred percent assured your words will not be misunderstood.

So there it is: a simple maxim that carries a lot of weight and wisdom.
Following these four "rules" can do much to increase your magical
effectiveness.

Sentinel Spell

Sentinel Spell

To protect a child at night, light a white candle and some incense on the floor of the child's room. Take a toy that looks like it might scare monsters under the bed (such as a lion, tiger, or bear), and pass it over the candle and through the incense smoke. Sprinkle the toy with water and salt, saying: "Elements of fire, air, water, and earth, charge this sentinel. Drive away all scary things. Only good may pass."Place the sentinel in a spot where it can oversee the room and the child. Recharge once a week.

The Magic in Photographs

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:24 pm (PDT)

The Magic In Photographs

One of the most enjoyable evenings I've spent with my circle sisters centered around a special exercise involving ancestral photographs. Before circle night, each of us gathered old photographs of our families. There was one requirement: for a photo to be submitted to the circle, the individual pictured had to be deceased.

After our normal circle work, we brought out the photos. Only one photo was passed arond the circle at a time. The owner of the photo could not tell any details about the individual pictured. Each of us wrote down our impressions of the photos on a piece of paper, using our intuition and psychic senses. When the last person put her pencil down, we went around the circle and shared our intuitions. The owner of the photo would tell us if we were right or wrong. After all thoughts had been shared, the owner of the photo told us the life story of the pictured individual.

This little exercise fulfilled several interesting functions. First, we got to know each other better, and enjoyed the spicy snippets of gossip and a few monstrous skeletons. Secondly, we learned to think together as a group mind. Finally, several of us learned to psychometrize old pictures through repeated practice. The trick is to meld your intuition with the impression you receive from the eyes of the individual in the photograph. An added benefit was learning what life was like for individuals separated from us by generations.

Several of the younger women in our group went to great length to obtain their photographs. They visited parents and grandparents, asking questions on the history of those pictured. Many had never showed an interest in their personal history before. As a result they not only felt closer with their Craft sisters, they also became enamored with their own family history.

Try sharing old photographs with your friends as a part of a ritual, then follow up by honoring the dead through verse or magical act.

All Hallows Meet

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:28 pm (PDT)

ALL HALLOWS MEET

Oh, wild lonely places of sweet dread delight
That call to my Children on Halloween night
In whispering wind wisps and whipporwill plight
Tickling the treetops where moonbeams alight.

Come hither, ye Witches, on silver light fly!
Don't dawdle, don't saunter, don't idly stroll by!
Lift your skirts as seer gusts catch the leaves dead and dry
Rise up with the wind soaring hasty on high!

Ride ye thus to the hollow in the wood dark and deep
Where all merry parted shall now merry meet.
At the time 'twas appointed that time shall ye keep
To honor me, hail me in great esbat fete.

When the moon sailing bright in the dark midnight blue
Casts her spell on the landscape, reversing each hue,
And the scent of the night gives the magickal clue
To the circle make haste, give Hecate her due!

Dance wild, draw the power and shape in a cone,
Till the power is thine and the will is thine own
Then hurl't to the wind that thy purpose be flown
And thy wish shall I grant on the Night of the Crone.

One and all then come hither and join the great feast
Where within all are welcome: Spirit, Human, and Beast.
Give hail and farewell to the souls since deceased
Then wend thy way home 'fore the Sun tints the East.

But remember, my Children, remember quite clear
The sound of my voice ringing high in your ear.
'Tis my summoning call in the owl's hoot you hear
To meet merry again on All Hallow's next year.

Breathe Before You Speak

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:33 pm (PDT)

Breathe Before You Speak

This simple strategy has had remarkable results for virtually everyone I know
who has tried it. The almost immediate results include increased patience,
added perspective, and, as a side benefit, more gratitude and respect from
others.

The strategy itself is remarkably simple. It involves nothing more than
pausing--breathing--after the person to whom you are speaking is finished.
At first, the time gap between your voices may seem like an eternity--but in
reality, it amounts to only a fraction of a second of actual time. You will
get used to the power and beauty of breathing, and you will come to
appreciate it as well. It will bring you closer to, and earn you more
respect from, virtually everyone you come in contact with. You'll find that
being listened to is one of the rarest and most treasured gifts you can
offer. All it takes is intention and practice.

If you observe the conversations around you, you'll notice that, often, what
many of us do is simply wait for OUR chance to speak. We're not REALLY
listening to the other person, but simply waiting for an opening to express
our own view. We often complete other people's sentences, or say things
like, "yeah, yeah," or "I know," very rapidly, urging them to hurry up so
that we can have our turn. It seems that talking to one another is sometimes
more like sparring back and forth like fighters or ping-pong balls than it is
enjoying or learning from the conversation.

This harried form of communication encourages us to criticize points of view,
overreact, misinterpret meaning, impute false motives, and form opinions, all
before our fellow communicator is even finished speaking. No wonder we are
so often annoyed, bothered, and irritated with one another. Sometimes, with
our poor listening skills, it's a miracle that we have any friends at all!

I spent most of my life waiting for my turn to speak. If you're at all like
me, you'll be pleasantly amazed at the softer reactions and looks of surprise
as you let others completely finish their thought before you begin yours.
Often, you will be allowing someone to feel listened to for the very first
time. You will sense a feeling of relief coming from the person to whom you
are speaking--and a much calmer, less rushed feeling between the two of you.
No need to worry that you won't get your turn to speak--you will. In fact,
it will be more rewarding to speak because the person you are speaking to
will pick up on your respect and patience and will begin to do the same.
