Totem - Groundhog

Groundhog
Key Word: Mystery of Death without Dying-Trance-Dreams, Weather Prophet
Cycles of Power: Winter, Spring and Summer
Element: Earth
Ruling Planet: Moon
The Groundhog is a member of the ground squirrel family known as marmots. They known by the other names of woodchuck, whistle-pig, and in some areas as a land-beaver. The name woodchuck is unrelated to wood or chucking, it comes from an Algonquian name for the animal, wuchak. The Groundhog is well adapted for digging and tunneling, with short but powerful limbs and curved, thick claws. They are also well suited to their temperate habitats, Groundhogs are covered with two coats of fur, a dense grey undercoat and a longer coat of banded guard hairs that gives the Groundhog a distinctive "frosted" look. They are found in many areas of the Northeastern United States.
The Groundhog is an excellent burrower and tunnler, using his burrows for sleeping, rearing young, and hibernating. The average groundhog has been estimated to be able to move approximately 320 kg (710 lbs) of dirt when digging a burrow. Groundhogs symbolically reflect the ability to dig and get in deep within any area of interest. It is not unusual to have Groundhog appear at a time when a new area of study opens up. Groundhog helps when you're investigating a new area of study that will require intensive effort on your part, but will be well worth it.
Groundhogs usually live about from two to three years, but can live up to six years in the wild. In captivity, groundhogs have shown being able to exceed this limit; for example, the 22-year-old Wiarton Willie may indicate a possible maximum lifespan. And Punxsutawney Phil is said to receive a drink of a magical punch every summer during the annual Punxsutawney Groundhog Picnic that gives him seven more years of life. So a Groundhog's appearance can reflect a two year cycle for any intensive studying, digging and building.
Mostly solitary, several individual Groundhogs have been known to share the same burrows. They are known for making elaborate dens with between two to five exits to escape predators and have multiple storage rooms. One room is even known to act as a latrine as they clean up after themselves, burying their own excrement. If you have Groundhog as a totem, you're likely to find you have a very clean and organized household and are extremely careful about sharing it with anyone else. They spend half their time underground. The bedroom area is always located above the lowest end of the tunnel. This is so they won't be flooded. Burrows can get fairly large, with up to 14 meters (46ft) worth of tunnels with 1.5 meters (5 ft) buried underground. This can create a problem for farmers and construction development by potentially damaging farming machinery and destroying building foundations.
Generally non-territorial, Groundhogs can tell if a burrow is occupied or not by the fresh dirt piled outside the entrance. Outside their burrow, Groundhogs are alert when not actively feeding. It is common to see one or more nearly-motionless individuals standing erect on their hind feet watching for danger. When alarmed, they use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the colony, hence the name "whistle-pig". This is also the ability to go to ground when trouble arises. Groundhogs may also squeal when fighting, seriously injured, or caught by an enemy. Other sounds Groundhogs make are low barks and a grinding sound of their teeth. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting. People with Groundhog for a totem need to have definite boundaries in their lives and communicate with others what those boundaries are.
Groundhogs are one of the few animals that truly hibernate. Hibernation is not just a deep sleep. It is actually a deep coma, where the body temperature drops to a few degrees above freezing, the heart barely beats, the blood scarcely flows, and breathing nearly stops. In many areas, Groundhogs hibernate from October to March or April. In more temperate areas, they may hibernate for as few as three months. They often build a separate winter burrow for this purpose, one that's in a wooded or brushy area and dug below the frost line so the den can stay at a stable temperature above freezing during the winter months. To survive the winter, they eat till they get to their maximum weight shortly before entering hibernation. They emerge from hibernation with some remaining body fat to live on until the warmer spring weather produces abundant plant life for food.
Hibernation has important significance with Groundhogs as it symbolizes death without dying. Some cultures used methods to induce these states as symbolic ritual of death and rebirth. Thus, hibernation can reflect a time of initiation that Groundhog can help you with to find a new sense of self. Winter is the season of power, for that is when the Groundhog reveals and uses its most potent medicine, that of hibernation. Call on Groundhog when you're drawn to a study of death and dying, perhaps even considering some type of hospice work and want to learn as much as possible about the death and dying process, but you don't want to be morbid about it.
Related too to the Groundhog's hibernation is their connection to the Realm of Dream and Sleep. Groundhog will help you learn how to pay close attention to your dreams and to discern their meanings. You may find your ability and mastery of Lucid Dreaming is becoming greater. If the Groundhog is your personal animal totem or it makes an appearance in your life, it may indicate that messages are being given to you through your dreams.
Many magical practices from Shamans, to Yogis and other types of Mystics teach methods for slowing down the metabolism of the body. These methods would often be used for creating Trances and Altered States of Consciousness. Or they helped to facilitate healing on spiritual levels and astral projection. Call on Groundhog if you're interested in using breath work of any sort to slow down your metabolic processes in order to enter the deepest states of meditation possible. As you experiment with altered states of consciousness, you'll find these experiences becoming more intense and stronger. Call on Groundhog when you're going to retreat for a period of time to rest and recuperate, have in interest in exploring mystical or shamanic arts and practices.
More recent to the legends and lore of Groundhogs is the celebration of Groundhog Day found in the United States and Canada which has given recognition and popularity to this animal. A popular movie of the same name: Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray shows a magical side to this holiday the hero of the story finds himself repeating the same day over and over again until he learns the lessons of caring, compassion, humility and community. Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd, frequently coinciding with Imbolc or Candlemas. On this day, similar to an old Roman observance of Hedgehog Day, when the Groundhog comes out and catches sight of his shadow, he will retreat back into his den for six more weeks of Winter. If the Groundhog stays above ground, then Spring will come early and it will be a good year for farmers.
Attributes: Sense of family and community, Communicating Boundaries and Limits, Connection to seasonal changes, Understanding the power of cycles, Ability to hibernate (sleep) during hard times, Protection from floods, Ability to go underground when trouble arises, Altered States of Consciousness, Weather Prediction

Totem - Hedgehog

Hedgehog
Key Word: Defense against negativity, Enjoyment of life, Understanding weather patterns
Cycles of Power: Night time
Element: Earth
Ruling Planet:
Hedgehogs are a familiar spiny animal found throughout many areas of Europe, Asia, Africa and even New Zealand where they have been introduced. No hedgehogs are found on the American and Australian continents. The spines that make for a Hedgehog's distinguishing features, are stiff hollow hairs. They are not poisonous or barbed, nor do they easily come off like those of porcupine quills. A Hedgehog is typically small enough to hold in a person's hand and is a brown color with yellowish-white tips on their spines. The name "hedgehog" came about due to the animal often being found in hedges and for their pig-like noses. Other names for Hedgehogs include: Urchin, Hedgepig and Furze-pig. Pixies were said to sometimes take the form of Hedgehogs.
Depending on the culture in question, the Hedgehog's reputation may vary. For the Irish and British, hedgehogs were believed to be a witch in disguise and they would be killed on sight. In medieval Britain, farmers believed that hedgehogs stole milk from cows during the night. In 1566, the Elizabethan parliament put a three pence bounty on the head of every hapless hedgehog that could be caught and killed. Even some of the parish churches got in on the act and offered bounties of their own. Thousands of hedgehogs were slaughtered as a result, yet no one even to this day has been able to verify this unlikely theory. Now days in Europe it is illegal to catch, kill, or confine hedgehogs and in Britain, Environmental Ads show a need for protecting and conservation of hedgehogs during the fall weather and raking up of leaves.
In China, they are considered sacred creatures. And the Hedgehog was an emblem of the Sumerian goddess Ishtar as the Great Mother. In Central Asia and parts of Iran, the hedgehog is associated with agricultural abundance, fertility and the gift of fire. In these cultures it is considered a solar power animal, and is strongly connected to the energy and vitality of the sun. In eastern Africa, the skin or spines of the White Bellied hedgehog is regarded as a fertility charm. If a hedgehog skin is placed on the seeds before planting, a good harvests is believed to be the result or outcome come time for harvesting. Small figurines of hedgehogs have been found in Minoa and Mycenae along with their pictures painted on vases. In Greece, Rhodes and Etruria before the sixth century B.C.E., vases shaped like hedgehogs were used for infant burials. This suggests a connection with the Goddess and her regenerating womb.
One erroneous story regarding hedgehogs is that first told by Pliny the Elder in his Historia Naturalis, telling how hedgehogs would climb apple trees, then knocks the fruit down, and would then roll upon the apples to get them to stick to their spines so that they could carry them off to their burrows. Not only do hedgehogs not climb trees, but they also do not store food in their burrows. Scientists in their efforts to prove this have only succeeded in debunking this story.
During winter, Hedgehogs hibernate, making their burrows and dens in piles of leaves. While in hibernation, the hedgehog's body temperature drops to as low as 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) and their heart rate drops dramatically, from 190 to about 20 beats per minute. The hedgehog's tendency to curl up in the fetal position is also a message of centering, and connecting with the source. It's belly is close to the Mother (earth, that is) and this close proximity is symbolic of its connection to earth and all that is fertile. This natural affinity to earth allows them to hear its voice clearly and teaches the need to pay close attention to what you hear. The hedgehog knows the secrets that lie beneath the surface and can teach how to uncover hidden knowledge and wisdom. Avoid all things that lead to chaos and protect and defend the truth.
In the Northern Hemisphere, when March or April comes, the hedgehog will finally come out of hibernation. Aristotle wrote of how the Hedgehog can predict the weather. And yes, long before the advent of Groundhog Day on February 2nd, the ancient Greeks and Romans observed a very similar day, only using hedgehogs where they would look to see if the hedgehog saw his shadow under a clear moon at night.
When threatened, hedgehogs curl up into a ball, spines outward until the enemy goes away. From this, those with hedgehog totems or medicine learn to shield and protect themselves from harsh criticism that they are being subjected to along with any negativity. Hedgehog will help you learn how to take care of yourself, landing on your feet as you maintain a cool practicality when facing life's challenges.
The inverse of this with being too defensive, the hedgehog can help remind you not to be too prickly and to enjoy life more. Hedgehog medicine can help you with being more sensitive and giving an apology to someone you may have recently offended. Use hedgehog to help aid you in exploring your neighborhood and getting to know your community and territory better. They will show you how to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the day to refresh yourself and find those quiet moments. To find some way in which to express yourself in artistic and creative ways. Are you taking opportunities that could make you happy? Are you letting people bring you down? Hedgehog can show you to be confident and move with strength.
As nocturnal creatures, the symbolism of the hedgehog deals with intuition, psychic ability, prophetic dreams and visions. This is because the night deals with concepts that are cloaked in shadow - a realm that is not altogether clear. That the hedgehog's active time is at night is symbolic of "second sight." Since their eyesight is poor the hedgehog relies on their acute sense of smell and hearing for survival. Those with this totem don't always see things clearly however they do have natural clairaudient abilities and need to pay close attention to what they hear (both in the physical world and in the spirit world) as it is usually very accurate. People with this totem would do well in any profession that involves sound.
Hedgehogs are omnivorous and generally eat slugs, snails, worms, insects, frogs and toads, snakes, bird eggs, carrion, mushrooms, grass roots, berries, melons, and watermelons. In many areas of Europe that have wild hedgehogs, especially Britain, they are a welcomed form of natural pest control for gardens. A single hedgehog can keep the average garden insect free by consuming up to 200 grams in insects a night. It's fairly common place for people in Britain to encourage hedgehogs to their gardens by leaving out treats such as milk, cottage cheese and pet food; and leaving hedgehog sized holes for them to enter in through. From this, Hedgehogs can show the benefits of working directly with the earth by doing planting and gardening. They will help you to do your best as well in areas where there is little land for you to use with gardening.
Hedgehogs are or were also a food source in many cultures. Hedgehogs were eaten in Ancient Egypt, and some recipes of the Late Middle Ages call for hedgehog meat. Hedgehog meat is still acceptable in some societies, and there are folk-remedies that include it as an ingredient. One method of preparation for eating hedgehogs since ancient times is to cover a hedgehog with clay and bake it. The hedgehog is then removed and the clay cracked open, taking the spikes of the hedgehog with it. At one time, it was believed that eating hedgehogs would cure the sick of all sorts of ailments including leprosy, colic, boils, stones and poor vision. The gypsies (or Romany?) of Europe still eat hedgehogs as a cure for poisoning and, perhaps even, for removing evil spells.
Another testimony to the Hedgehog's spiritual power is their natural resistance to snake venom. Similar to opossums, mice, and moles, hedgehogs have some natural immunity against snake venom due to the protein Erinacin in the animal's muscular system. This carries extreme importance with many Native American Indian tribes and is seen as a symbol of victory over evil. This attribute is also a portent of resurrection, life after death, or defeating death completely.
Hedgehog teaches defense mechanisms against negativity. They show us how to enjoy life and to walk the earth with a sense of lightness and a sense of wonder along with tenacity and strength when needed. Are you taking opportunities that could make you happy? Letting people bring you down? Hedgehog can show you to be confident and move with strength.
Attributes: Self-defense, Less defensiveness and seriousness in life. Appreciate life more. Building defenses and protective barriers that discourage negative people. Reconnecting yourself with the Crone aspect of the Goddess, Wisdom of the Female Elder, Energy, Vitality, Fertility, Intuition, Protection, Perception, Intelligence, Resourcefulness, Understanding weather patterns
