CD REVIEW - Gambler's Ballet

I must give my thanks to the generosity of the musicians who compose the group Kila. When I wrote to them, I asked for a couple of samples of their CDs for reviews. You can imagine my surprise when I opened the package and found a group CD, a concert DVD of the group, and solo offerings from two of the artists as well as a separate collaborative effort by several members.

I'm not sure how I found my way to their web page, whether it was a listing on someone else's page or if just a search for Celtic musicians, but I am extremely glad I did find it.

The music on this album is wonderful. It was conceived as an album of dancing tunes and whether you are listening to a vocal piece (such as "Leath in a Dhiadh hOcht") or a pure instrumental (like "Electric Landlady") you cannot help being swept up by the energy which comes across so eloquently. And, you don't have to understand the lyrics (and I am strictly an English-speaker, so I didn't have a hope of understanding the vocals) to get the message. There are translations provided in the liner notes if you feel compelled to "know" what is being said. Translations sometimes don't help all that much, even if they do provide understanding. If you can't enjoy a song without a translation, you need to learn how to relax. I don't speak Italian, but I can certainly sit back and enjoy opera. My Latin is more than a little rusty, but that doesn't diminish my enjoyment of sacred music from the Christian church. I don't need to speak Irish to enjoy their music.

Even my first listening to it made me feel that I was on to something here. The blend of Irish music with influences from around the world makes for an interesting combination. The members of this group bring an interesting mixture to the table, as the band has evolved through the years. They bring all the usual Celtic instruments, and add in some more contemporary ones, such as the electric guitar.

Their sound bridges genres and surpasses expectations. This is a group to keep an eye on, and an ear tuned to their music.

I imagine that they are pretty much unknown on this side of the Atlantic, but that needs to change. Here in the United States we have lots of Celtic-inspired groups, but not a whole lot of the real thing. Kila is the real thing and I'm sure they can be an inspiration for many other groups. If you want to hear authentic Irish-Celtic folk music, pick up one or more of the CDs offered by this group, available at their website.

Crann na Bpingini Glanfaidh Me

I had just finished listening to "Gambler's Ballet" when I popped this DVD into my player. I had a certain expectation of what I would be seeing...I was wrong. Oh, I knew there was energy and enthusiasm in aplenty, but to actually see this group of insanely talented musicians on stage was more than I had ever expected. They genuinely seemed to be having fun on-stage and to enjoy each others' company.

First there were the unexpected elements which, as another reviewer commented seemed to include "...visual effects by Circue Du Soleil" - if you don't believe that, wait until you see "Crann na Bpingini" - and included giant puppets and stilt walkers amongst other things, and music which should be have seemed an unlikely match-up (if only with the images which accompanied it). Watching it, however, I found myself wondering why no one had tried this before, it seemed so natural.

Although much of their music is derived from traditional sources (and not all the same tradition, I might add), there is little of the traditional in their presentation of it. Perhaps that explains the appeal it has for many, including myself. Sometimes a different approach makes things a bit more appealing.

If your only exposure to "traditional" Irish music is "Lord of the Dance," or performances by The Chieftains, you won't recognize this approach. The vibrancy will be familiar, as will most of the instrumentation, but the look and feel are very different. There is a very strong element of performance art in this DVD. That alone would take it out of the mainstream, but combined with everything else, it produces a unique experience. My only regret was that I don't have a big enough screen on my TV to help convey the true majesty of this work.

Like the vast majority of individuals who listen to music, and watch concert videos, I have no true understanding of the technique which goes into producing what I see and hear, I simply judge a performance by how it moves me, or how it fails to move me. There is nothing more that needs to be said about the power of this performance other than the fact that it took me to unexpected places and called up emotions I wasn't expecting.

The same reviewer I quoted before described this production as having "...melted my brain." Here I feel compelled to disagree with him. My brain was not melted – perhaps softened a bit around the edges, and encouraged to find new forms, perhaps even expanded a bit beyond where I started. There are so many unexpected twists and turns in this performance that it just isn't possible to go into them without detracting from the joy of encountering them as you experience the DVD for yourself.

1332 Eastern Europe: The worlds of God, Goddess and Satan collide in this epic tale of love, revenge and forgiveness.

Two years ago Nicolai's life, as he knew it, ceased to exist. On that one horrific day his wife was murdered and his daughter abducted and he's been on the hunt ever since. But the baggage he carries is heavy— guilt. Guilt of not being there when he was needed most. Guilt of believing he wasn't the husband and father he should have been haunts his every waking moment but above all else he's determined to rescue his daughter from the ruthless clutches of the vampire known as Lord Valnar and destroy him to avenge his wife's death.

Kaira is also on the hunt. Barmaid by necessity and hunter by choice she too has been injured by these blood thirsty beasts. Kaira and her companion, Gustav, have been destroying Valnar's legion of undead for years, but at a high cost—her heart. She's already seen to many of her comrades fall prey to Valnar's men and she's vowed not to let her heart get in her way again. Gustav, the Preacher, has a much different goal. For him it's neither revenge nor lost love. His only goal and pleasure in life is to hear the faint utterance of the word "free" as a soul is released when a vampire is destroyed.

Together, Nicolai, Kaira and Gustav join forces toward one common goal—destroying Valnar but when a battle goes terribly wrong and despite his vow to love no other Nicolai finds himself in Kiara's arms.

After rescuing the witch, Jessica, she joins the group but finds herself at odds with Gustav and his Christian beliefs. Nevertheless she's still willing to help and calls upon the Goddess who leads them to the Gardos Tower. Once there they solve the mystery of Gardos and retrieve the sacred awe powerful Saint's Sword from its guarded grave. But all hell breaks loose when Nicolai hears whispers on the wind warning him of betrayal and he begins to doubt everything and everyone around him. Even though he has the sword and is surrounded by his friends and lover he feels alone. Will he be betrayed by his lover, the preacher, the witch, the mercenary or his own heart?

Excerpt:
The next morning Gustav was the first to awake but soon all were roused by the banging of pots and pans in the kitchen. Jessica spoke first.

"The sun is rising. I must greet the new rays and the Goddess. It is now she listens best, other than at the rise of the full moon."

"I think I shall miss this magic show," Gustav muttered.

"We all have to be there. If the Goddess is to answer my questions, she will need to see those who will use her gift."

"But—" Gustav began to speak, but Nicolai cut him off.

"It is settled. We all shall go." Nicolai shot Gustav a look and Gustav gave a reluctant nod of agreement.

Secluded behind the inn, Jessica knelt on the ground and smoothed a small section of dirt with her hand, then inscribed a pentagram with her dagger and laid the blade next to her. She removed a pouch from her belt and began placing elegant, crystal-clear diamond like pieces of quartz at each point of the pentagram. In the center she placed a handful of straw and stuck a long straight stick into the ground. She placed a small piece of straw at the end of the shadow cast by the first stick, "West," she muttered. She then placed three more pieces at a right angle to the previous one. "North, east, south."

She took a tiny vial and a piece of flint from her pouch. She poured the liquid in the center of the tiny mound of straw she'd built.

She bowed her head.
"Goddess, hear the words I now speak.
Guide me to that of which I seek.
Goddess, my quest and path are true.
Blessings for success I beg of you."

She struck a flint with her knife and the spark turned the mound of straw to flame.

"Goddess, smoke and ash lead my way;
Goddess, Thy wisdom I seek today."

Jessica sprinkled a powder into the flame then held her hands, palms up to the sky. "Goddess, I beckon thee send me a sign."

The fire flashed and emitted three puffs of black smoke and shot embers into the air. Kiara, Nicolai and Gustav watched as an ember settled on Jessica's arm. It burned into her flesh, but she didn't flinch as she spoke. "Goddess, we thank you for your blessings and care."

Jessica slumped, resting her arms on her thighs and spoke in muted tones to herself or perhaps to the Goddess. Finally she raised her head and leaned over the extinguished fire. "What we seek is a three-day travel in this direction." She pointed to the east.

Nicolai stepped near her and took her arm. "Are you alright?"

"Yes, sometimes the Goddess marks us when she grants our wishes. They say it's a reminder of her power and benevolence."

"Enough of this pampering; it was only a spark." Gustav scuffed the point of the pentagram nearest him. "How can you know this from your fire? You try to wile us with your magic tricks."

"Silence this doubter before I do!" Jessica picked her knife from the ground where she'd laid it and stood. The delicate truce was over.

Again Nicolai was between them. "Stop this bickering. Bury this battle now." It was an order, not a request.

Gustav stepped back. "Forgive me, Jessica. To be honest, you weigh heavy against the grain of my beliefs and it's hard for me to accept your magic, but my Lord also says, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I've my sins and cannot place judgment on you." He paused. "We can exist next to each other without quarrel. Can we not?"

Jessica stood silent for a moment as if considering the proposal. "For once, Preacher, we agree. Now may I explain the journey the Goddess has given us?"

"Please do." Gustav crouched next to Jessica as she knelt before the ashes.

"See here, one of the short straws is burned by the flash of my powder. This tells me the direction of our journey. If two were to be burned, our path would be between the two. There were three puffs of smoke, telling me we have a three-day journey. In my mind, the Goddess showed me a tower and a sword. It seems she heard your need, Gustav, above mine, as it's the weapon she leads us to, not Valnar. This is where we shall find a sword, the weapon that will bring an end to Valnar."

Gustav stood up, a bewildered look etched in his face. Nicolai and Kiara came closer and stood beside him.

"I thought you asked your Goddess where to find Valnar?" Nicolai's voice was halting.

"I did, but it seems she would prefer us to have the sword of Saint Sava the Goth, The Saint's Sword, before we continue our quest to destroy Valnar."

"Then east we shall go," Gustav said as he bent back down to the fire. "Let me help you with your stones."

Jessica knelt beside him, opening her pouch. "Thank you, Preacher."

Re: Do you accept some forms of Satanism as Paganism?

Malprigigah,

I can't speak for the rest of the group and I don't know a lot about Satanism but off the cuff I would not include Satanism as a Pagan. Satan is specifically linked to the Christian mytho and without the Christian mythology there is no Satan. There is no reference to him outside of the bible. With that in mind, I would say that it is specifically an Abrahamic faith.

I've had people tell me that Satanism has nothing to do with Satan. If that is the case, then why honor him by naming the whole belief after him? My bottom line, I'd exclude it.

Dear Atasha, I am also a new member, Peter of Cape Town, thanks for writing again. I do remember having seen your introduction a short while ago when I went on to enrol for a past lives newsletter and am looking forward to receiving my first one within about a month's time. The website is attractive; both interesting and impressive.

After several reviews of albums which were Celtic, I now return to some specifically Pagan albums. I was inspired to seek out this particular type of album (choral) as a result of a discussion with my daughter who was bemoaning the fact that there were no Pagan choral groups around (she is a big fan of choral music, and hopes to get one of her own up and running). I responded that there must be some, and launched an internet search. This was among the first entries which popped up.

Without even taking the time to listen to samples I decided to fire off a request for a review copy. That was a really good idea. It is one thing to listen to a single artist, or a small group, while they are offering music to both their audience and to the deities. It is another entire level of experience to hear the blending of multiple voices as they weave together and produce a unique sound.

If your sole experience of hearing multiple voices rising in song is your local coven, or perhaps an open ritual or two, this album will open your ears to something special. Most groups are lucky to have a member or two who have true musical ability to carry the effort, supported by enthusiastic backups.

The Shining Wheel Pagan Chorus is no new phenomenon (although they are new to me), having been performing for over a decade. They bring a unique blending of styles and influences to the microphone (rock, blues, jazz, pop, folk, alternative and even new age). The result is like nothing you have ever heard before, and unlikely to hear again. They are based in Clearwater, Florida

This is their second album (Chants of Balance was their first, released in 2003 and available at cdbaby) and although I haven't heard it yet I plan to scrape together the cash and add it to my collection as soon as I can. This album has a new "cast of characters" since the group has evolved and changed in the years between releases and I will be interested to see the differences.

The group has gone through multiple personnel changes, as is to be expected, but, much like many "big name" choral groups (the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Vienna Boys Choir, etc.) each change brings something new to the mix, and almost guarantees a never to be repeated experience. What you hear on this album is probably not what you will hear at a live performance, nor is it what you will hear when their next album is released (you are planning on another one, yes????), but for that reason alone, this CD belongs in your collection. Or you can download it to to MP3 player. Whatever you do, however, I recommend you experience the joy and beauty which is "Elemental Children of the Earth."

This year, for some reason, I have been experiencing a real wave of nostalgia. I have been harkening back to experiences I had during my early years of involvement in the Pagan movement and I have made a personal commitment to expose many of the new generations of followers to some of the ideas and experiences which were commonplace before the advent of the internet and the explosion of information which is the community today.

This album is a good example of what I mean. As you can see from the original copyright date, this material has been around for a long time. Some of these chants have passed into common usage by groups of various orientations and of all sizes from small groups to open rituals at major Pagan gatherings. Many people know the chants, but have no idea when, where, or how they originated.

If you don't know anything about the Reclaiming Tradition, go to www.reclaiming.org to learn about who they are and how they came into existence. While you are there you can look at the listing of CDs they have available and the deals they offer on combinations.

This is the first album they produced and, for a number of reasons, it is the one which is most compelling in my opinion. Of course, that may change as I listen to more of their work, but the fact that this was one of the first exposure many Pagans ever had to the concept of music as a tool of Pagan worship has to be acknowledged.

Just looking at the list of chants, even before I put the CD in the player, I spotted half a dozen chants I have used and participated with over the past decades. Some of them still raise goosebumps when I hear them ("We All Come from the Goddess/Hoof and Horn" especially).

If you are an old-timer (like me), this album will inspire a trip into the past and revive memories you had probably forgotten you had. If you have never heard these chants before (having you been living a hermit's existence in a cave somewhere?) you are in for a truly inspiring experience. In either case, this album deserves to be in your collection. In addition to the sheer joy brought to you there is the fact that sales of this CD helps to support the work of Reclaiming.

CD REVIEW - Witches Brew

Posted by: "gleason.mike@comcast.net" gleason.mike@comcast.net

Trillium 2:50 Labyrinth Meditation Music 8:12

This is Reclaiming's latest CD, and is a very different experience from Chants: Ritual Music (see my previous review). Where Chants was about the simple joy and experience of raising energy through music, this is a mixture of that style and longer songs. There is less energy on display in this album, but there is a greater depth of feeling evident. There is also the fact that there is greater array of individuals involved in this offering. Many of those whose work appears here have their own presence in the Pagan music scene. There is also more emphasis (though not reliance) on the musical accompaniment this time around.

The songs have been assembled from multiple, previously released CDs, and has given me inspiration for other CDs to look for to expand my library.

Although the play list has 14 entries, there are a couple of "hidden tracks" which add a couple of minutes to the total running time.

Without a doubt this collection truly is a "greatest hits" release. The performers include some of the teachers from the Reclaiming classes and can help you to get a taste of what the group has to offer. I am happy to see that they plan to continue releasing more works. They have been responsible for "Witch Camps" for years and, while I haven't been able to attend any of them, I have been able to get a feel for them through this release.

Looking at the list of performers, I am slowly formulating a list of further artists to look for. I've heard a few of them, often as part of other groups, but most of them are new to my experience, so as nostalgic as I have been this year, it looks like it is time for me to expand my horizons a bit.

Old timers may not be familiar with a lot of the names associated with this album, and a few of the names may raise an eyebrow or two (David Miller and the Honky Tonk Communists ????), but the music is definitely worth it.
