Mel,
This list can be curious. I think some here are conflicted in their
beliefs. It claims to be witches I presume, but they seem to have an
aversion at times to see issues they should rightly be concerned about
when it points out the behaviors of Christians that would potentially
hurt them as pagans. There are also some who aren't too worried about
how Christianity abuses women. Grambadger for one told me once on this
list he didn't care about how the Bible gives license to abuse women. I
got a Rush Limbaugh kind of response from him. And you see this
response I've gotten to my posting about my last radio show about
Christian language and male domination.
I wonder if I'm really wasting my time to bring the work of these
theologians and scholars to this list.

Interesting assurtion. But false, or can some one bring up the file and show it to every one? You could say that anyone who doesn't sound like Dian Rehm must be Rush Limbaugh.
Not only am I familiar with Numbers chapter 5 But also with GBG's discription of "the law" and Jeffrey Gantz's translations of The Wooing of Etain. Interesting to look into the treatment of women found in "pagan" manuscripts.

Now you're going to deny telling me this? If anyone looked back far enough they'd find it. You've colored my perceptions of this list with your talk and few people said much to correct you. I'll never forget it. It was astounding. We exchanged a few terse emails over it and you finally gave up calling me a feminist or something similar (in the vein of Limbaugh) as if being a feminist is a bad thing wanting women's equality and nuisance things like that - and said you had things to go do in your barn, so forget it. I vividly remember....

To the List,
Am I wasting my time bringing notices of noted pagans, theologians and
scholars to this list? Seriously. I can't quite figure this list out.
You're supposed to be Pagan I presume by the title, but when ever I've
brought to light discussions about how Christianity thwarts women, or
now, having listed my last show where I've interviewed noted Progressive
Christians who cite how Christian language abuses women and promotes
male domination - well, that's got characterized as being associated
with politics - by the guy who told me once he didn't care the Bible
gave men license to abuse women. What's really with this group? Are
you really Evangelical Christians?
Does anyone actually ever listen to what these scholars I have on my
show have to say so you can make a judgement if you might want to learn
from their knowledge and experience? Or am I wasting my time here?
Please tell me - would you rather I not post here because if what I'm
trying to provide the public isn't appreciated here, if you could care
less about what these Pagan and Progressive Christian scholars have to
say, I won't post here anymore.
I await your feedback - and no, Grambadger's comments don't really count.

Karen, you know that I support you and what you post here 100%. If you decided to drop the group, please let me know because I will be following you. I, too, and tired of the people on this list that don't care to support their own ideas, the ideas of Paganism and Witchcraft. At this particular time, with the Right Wingnut Republicans doing everything to put the unions, women, the poor, those that need healthcare and more into a feudal society where we are the slaves and they, the 1% are the masters, it is more important that we wake up and take up the struggle for our freedom.
Very Sincerely, B*B, Don

Don,
Thank you for your support. I have to believe there are some here that wish to avail themselves of the knowledge and scholarship my guests provide. Perhaps others will speak up pro and con and I'll know if I'm wasting my time or not. And if they're afraid to comment positively on the list, they can contact me off list and I'll keep them on my database and they can keep following the show that way. My email is karentate108@ca.rr.com
I'll wait and see what the consensus seems to be before deciding Don and let you know.

Stone Soup Opening up and Sharing Emotions
Today lets make our Brew together, remember that story of stone soup?
Lets beging with adding things to our pot, this is a sort of meditation and does take imagination and visualization, you have to live and feel the part of our brew as we share together.
What I'm going to suggest is that simply you say one thing that is bothering you or making you feel down about yourself or life, visualize yourself standing in front of the couldron, feel the heat and see the brightness of the fire glow around the pot and against your body, simply then think of something that would help you or make you feel better and can even be something nice towards someone/or memory to make you feel better then we toss that into the pot as an ingredient. After you toss your Positive good thoughts you will then take a large paddle and stir the brew and as you turn it 3 times you will say your new positive intention and then we move on to the next person until all our good intents are then made into this large good soup together where we heal and share our feelings and friendships.
Ok lets begine, I close my eyes and visualize a huge black cauldron over an amazingly large fire, flames appear soft and wrap it's arms around that pot as it begins to bubble and steam rises as if arms and little hands hold that pot tight for us to add all our good intensions and good ol positive energy full of healing, happiness, friendship and love!
So I walk up to this amazing Pot and I'm going to share:
Next Person Please add your intents to the pot
Cher's Ingredients:
Tired of Arguments that make me feel like I'm invisible with my family so for today only, I will not argue and let these things bother me
I surrender myself and will be the better person and do something that makes me happy today....I think of potatoes LOL because they can change into so many different things as you cook them and I am amazing all all those different ways. I toss my thoughts of good will to myself in the pot and stirr the paddle three times...thank you for listening to my problems today ... Read More... Read More
Blessed Be!

Sorry if it seems like i see christian bashing as part of a commercial or political enterprise. Kate has to make a living, I can see that. Far be it from me to interfere with some one's profession. But I would prefer to see *us*as better than that. Better than pointing the finger at our neigbors as a means of elevating ourselves. I do point out the political bent is associated with the Craft. And I like to point it out when we pretend our motivations are a-political. If or when the opportunity for polititians to co-opted our own real feelings for their gain appears, I'll be gald to point it out.
Truley, christindom has no monoply on mysogynism, nore oppression. Being mean to each other seems to be a human trait, without reguard to the name we give our religion. I'd like to think that *we* are better than that. Alas, but we can't really make christian a synonym with abusive. Certainly there is plenty abuse going on that had little to do with christianity or the civilization that grew up around it. I wonder how the writings of Gerald Gardner would compare with those of St. Paul, both of whom wrote on family life, religious commuity and the treatment of women in "church"?
Is there no way to "impower women" but to make scape goats of your christian neighbors?

Grambadger,
I wasn't Christian bashing. You assumed I was. The Progressive Christians on my show are educators speaking about how Christian language disempowers women and perpetuates male dominance and abuse of women. Maybe listen to a show before you judge me personally, and my show, which isn't an enterprise - I don't make money doing it. In fact I pay to have the show on the air as a service to the community. This is why I said "your comments don't count much" to me because your understanding of these issues seems to be very limited and you show no desire to expand on that knowledge. Shedding light on abuse or anything that hurt others is not bashing. It's enlightening and increases understanding and awareness so people don't continue to perpetuate abuse - including women. They can understand the issues so they're not complicit in their own oppression.

Croning Ceremonies
Posted by: "Marie McFarland" lilith_storm@mail.com lilith_storm
Thu Mar 1, 2012 9:27 am (PST)
A good article for those like myself who are entering their croning years.
)O( Lilith Storm
Croning Ceremonies
Few of us were welcomed into the maiden phase of life, celebrated the first flow of blood in our monthly cycles, initiated into women's mysteries. We likely viewed menstruation as a curse or an obstacle. If we became mothers, we may have received special attention until we gave birth, but then the focus shifted to our children. If we mothered projects, careers, creative endeavors, we might have been celebrated for what we produced, but seldom for ourselves. Now, for the first time in our lives, we have an opportunity to be celebrated for who we are--crones.
The croning ceremony honors a woman's passage into the third phase of life. Often celebrated at age 50, ceremonies range from spontaneous cronings at birthday parties to pre-planned ceremonial rites of passage. Some ceremonies are personal, others are shared, some are convened by an ongoing group for new crones, and others are large rituals at women's conferences and gatherings.
Being initiated into the ancient sisterhood of wise old women involves response-ability. We have an opportunity to personally reclaim the once-honored designation of crone, to take a special name, and to make commitments to ourselves, our communities, and the earth. Intention is primary and that is what we declare, our intention to be true to ourselves, to walk our talk, to become a link between the crones of the ancient and recent past and the women of the future.
*Frequently Asked Questions*
At what age can I be croned? Although traditions vary, it's generally accepted that age 49 (one's 50th year) is the minimum. Many women wait to be croned until they're 56 or 60. In my experience, each decade, starting with the 5th, brings its own challenges and blessings, resulting in newly harvested wisdom.
Do I have to be post-menopausal? No. Today some women still bleed in their 60s and others experience menopause after an operation in their 30s. We honor this rite as a woman's (blood) mystery, but the timing depends more on age (see above) and personal readiness than biological factors.
Who does the actual croning? Again, traditions vary. Typically initiations are conducted by those already initiated. If initiated crones are not available, women who deeply appreciate and acknowledge what it means to be a crone can conduct/priestess the ceremony.
Who can participate? Croning Ceremonies often take place in women's circles, gatherings, and conferences. Private ceremonies can include crones only, women only, or women, children, and men. While those conducting the ceremony and performing the actual croning should be women, all participants can honor the new crone and engage in other aspects of the ceremony.
Can I be croned more than once? Can I be croned for the first time at 70 instead of 50? Claiming our wisdom is a constant process: One can never be croned too many times, and it's never too late. I've been croned in a personal ceremony, with circle sisters on a weekend retreat, and with new and previously initiated crones in gatherings of 100-300 women. Each ceremony is a unique celebration, an opportunity to reaffirm old commitments and make new ones.
Can I be croned in a group ceremony before I have my personal ceremony? Yes; there is no order in which to be croned. Participating in large group cronings will often spark ideas for a personal ceremony and vice versa.
Do I have to have a crone name? Many women take this opportunity to rename themselves or take a special name, but it is not a requirement.
Do I have to make commitments? Croning is a significant step, a recognition of wisdom gained through years lived. Although not required, I strongly encourage the new crone to act on her wisdom by making a three-fold commitment to healing--herself, her community (however she defines it), and the earth. This can be simple or elaborate, general or specific.
*Guidelines for a Personal Croning Ceremony*
The ritual can follow a celebratory meal (save the dessert until after the ceremony)
It can take half an hour to two hours depending on the size of the group and how many people speak, give gifts, etc.
Use the ritual structure of your tradition (or contact me for a general outline); the working is the croning
Select songs and chants that feature old women, crones
Call crone goddesses, ancestresses, crones of ancient times
Decide what will symbolize the initiation--a flower or star garland crown, a crone staff, a cloak or shawl, a ribbon or flower lei, a special gourd
Decide what will be used to represent the passage (a birthing into cronehood)--a gateway, threshold, curtain, a woman's legs (she stands on a chair)
If people will be present who don't understand the significance of the ceremony or of reclaiming the once-revered designation of crone, give a brief explanation
Everyone participates in honoring the new crone--written or verbal blessings, stories of her wisdom, poetry, song, chant, drumming, dancing (building toward the moment of croning)
The new crone crosses the threshold, emerges between the legs, parts the curtain
Once on the other side she can be anointed with Hecate oil, rose petal water, rattled, wanded with lavender
The priestess asks for her crone name (if she is going to take one) and commitments
Then the priestess says some appropriate words and blessings as she presents the new crone with her symbol of initiation (placing the crown on her head, the cloak/shawl around her body, the staff or gourd in her hand)
Songs, chants, drumming/rattling
Other symbols and gifts can be presented to the new crone
The new crone speaks her wisdom, gratitude, expands on her commitments
End the ritual in the traditional manner
Celebrate with food and drink
Enjoy the afterglow.

on scholarship

I've been a scholar m'self. Spent some time among scholars. Also spend time herding cattle and sheep. I find disappointingly little difference between these species. I've also met a number of progressive christians, many of them catholic. Read "Labor" by Leo III, and "Atheistic Communism" and "Reconstructing the Social Order" by Pius XI. Wouldn't it be amusing to find that your radio programs were in keeping with the objectives of Rome?
Human nature tends to remember whatever is convenient, or to accept arguments that support "our side".
I'm going to suggest that we see more of this sort of thing during the election cycle. We see presentations charged with gender bias, or accusations of same. Politicians and politics thrives on such feelings and are happy to make use of them. But in the end, it's not we, but they who benefit. That great Republican, Nixon, was responsable for NSSM200, no? Feminism is neither of your making nore does it serve your interets.

Day of the Crows - On this day, in Scottish Celtic traditions, many women believed the crow's odd behaviours would be a significant aspect of the year to come.Crows storing seeds would indicate that food would need to be stored early on, etc.
Greek: The 2nd day of each month is sacred to the Agathos Daimon, the "Good Spirit" (roughly equivalent to a combination of the Will and the guardian angel of each person).
St Chad - Born in Northumbria, Chad became an abbot in Yorkshire, founded a monastery in Lincolnshire, and a bishop of the Mercians at Lichfield. His name is associated with wells and springs that heal. He is also noted for his love of walking. St Theodore of Canterbury insisted he ride a horse because walking was beneath him.
He is often associated with St David in agricultural rhymes:
Sow beans and peas on David and Chad
Be the weather good or bad.
By Valentine's Day
Every good hen, duck or goose should lay
By David and Chad

Today's Goddess: SEMELE Anthesaria (Greece)
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411

Today's Goddess: SEMELE
Anthesaria (Greece)
Themes: Fertility; Grounding; Joy; Playfulness; Pleasure;Youthfulness
Symbols: Wine or Grape Juice; Soil
About Semele: In Greek mythology, Semele is a young earth goddess who, in mortal
form, gave birth to the ever-exuberant party animal Dionysus (the god of wine). Today Semele flows into our lives bringing spring's zeal, joy,
and playfulness carefully balanced with the exhortation to keep one foot firmly on terra firma. Semele's name translates as "land;' giving her
additional associations with fertility and grounding.
Semele
became a Goddess after insisting on seeing Zeus (Dionysus' father) in
his full glory. This killed Semele, but Zeus rescued her from Hades and
made her a goddess.
To Do Today: A three-day celebration began in Athens around this time to celebrate
spring. The first day of the observance was called the "opening of the
casks"! So, if you have a favorite wine, today is definitely the time to take it out and enjoy it with some friends. Toast to Semele for giving
the world a wine god who lives in every drop poured!
To "grow"
any of Semele's virtues within yourself, find a small planter, some rich soil, and a flowering seed. Name the seed after that characteristic,
and water it with a bit of wine or grape juice. If you use diligent care and maintain a strong focus on your goal, when the seed blossoms that
energy should show signs of manifesting in your life.

Gender Balance Ritual

Gender Balance Ritual
Incense of the day: Cedar
March is Gender Equality Month. Throughout history, the war between the sexes has created a lot of casualties. Although some of the worst inequities
have been addressed, domestic violence and sexual assault still haunt
our society. Women often bump into a "glass ceiling" at work. Men often
have trouble keeping custody of their children in a divorce. We all pay
the price. In Paganism, we explicitly acknowledge the duality of nature
and honor the balance between the divine feminine and the divine
masculine. It's our responsibility to manifest that ideal in our own
lives. Here is a prayer to help:
Let each of us see
Ourselves in the other,
And the holy in the whole.
Let us honor women's strength
And men's compassion
And children's promise.
Let us build a world where gender
Exists not as a barrier
But as a bridge.

Saffron Crescent Cakes for Ashtoreth
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Thu Mar 1, 2012 7:43 pm (PST)
Saffron Crescent Cakes for Ashtoreth
These are traditionally baked in honor of Ashtoreth, but they are appropriate for any
Goddess associated with the Moon. To honor those harvest deities not associated
with the Moon, simply cut into round or other shapes, and bake as directed. Saffron
expensive, so you may prefer to substitute yellow food coloring, an additional
1/4 cup honey, or 1/3 cup chopped nuts instead.
Ingredients
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1/4 honey
2 cups all purpose flour
3 T.. baking powder
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4-1/2 tsp. saffron
Mix egg, milk, oil, and honey in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and stir
until just mixed. Cut into wedges and roll up, starting at the rounded edge.
Place on greased cookie sheet with points down and shape into crescents.
Bake for 20 minutes at 400F.

The Goddess Isis, speaking in Apuleius' The Golden Ass
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Thu Mar 1, 2012 7:46 pm (PST)
The law of the season becomes
the law of religion. According to that law,
the day born of this night is sacred.
for on this day offerings are made
that dedicate all ships to me.
As this day dawns, the storms of winter
lose their strength. The surging waves
grow calm. The sea is a highway once again.
Go through this day with a mind not clouded
by worry over the past or fear of futures
that have not yet come to be.
~The Goddess Isis, speaking in Apuleius' The Golden Ass
Although Isis was
originally an Egyptian Goddess, her worship spread to Rome during
imperial times. There she was honored as the Goddess of the sea, Stella
Maris, Each year at this time, all the boats that would ply the waters
during the summer were blessed in lavish festivals. The Goddess was
invoked to keep the sea-farers safe and to bring the goods they sought
safely back to port.
We too are sailors,
navigating the oceans of our lives, often buffeted by storms and gales.
We leave the safe harbour of our homes each day to travel in search of
the goods we need to survive. Yet we have no seasonal festivals that
bless our voyages. Taking time to ask for the kindness and protection of the Goddess as we move through the day is a small ritual, but one that
can sustain us as we travel.
