Subject: DailyOM: Too Many Things
DailyOM - Spoiling Our Children
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
January 10, 2011
Too Many Things
Spoiling Our Children
When you spoil your children with material goods, where is that motivation coming from, your own inner child?
One of the greatest things about children is that they have the ability to entertain themselves for long periods of time with something as simple as a cardboard box, a container, or a set of measuring spoons. It makes you wonder why we feel the need to buy them so many toys that they won't even have time to play with them all before they grow out of them. Often, if we take the time to question our compulsion to constantly give our children new toys and clothes, and to spoil them with food that is not even good for them, we will find that we are trying to fill up the space to avoid our own difficult feelings and pain. If you feel yourself wanting to spoil your child with material possessions, take a moment and see if you can feel where your motivation is coming from.
We may be inundating our children with things they don't need out of our own desire to create a feeling of abundance that was lacking in our own childhood, or out of a need to feel liked by our children. Both of these motives tend to be unconscious, stemming from unresolved issues from our own upbringing or even our adult life. These unresolved feelings naturally come up when we find ourselves in the role of a parent, often as our child reaches the age we were when these traumas were most pronounced. Spoiling your children will not save you or make your pain disappear, only acknowledging and working on your emotional issues can do that. What our children really need us to provide for them is both a sense of safety and a sense of freedom and love of which there can never be too much. If we are able to do this well, material possessions need not take center stage.
We all want to provide our children with a good and happy life, but most of us know deep down that material possessions play a very small role. We confuse our children when we seek to make them happy through buying them things. When we do this, they take our cue that happiness comes in the form of toys and treats, rather than in the joy of being alive, surrounded by love, and free to explore the world.

Greetings Friends and Family,
Be sure to tune in LIVE next Wednesday, or from the archives at your
convenience.....
In the spirit of Howard Zinn we have at the top of the hour...
Thaddeus Russell, formerly a professor at Barnard College, author of
Renegade History of the United States should satisfy listeners who love
hidden history and unsung heroes and heroines. Hear him discuss how
"*Bad Women Made American the Home of the Free*" as he turn myths of the
"American character" on their head as he discusses how prostitutes in
the 19th century won many freedoms for today's women and how poor,
immigrant women were the vanguard of the consumer revolution that
radically transformed and liberated the lives of all Americans.
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUR hear *Art Noble, author of The Sacred Female -
A Sonata of Sexual Love and Spirituality* discuss there's more to sex
than you think as he covers such taboo subjects as female ejaculation,
sex and sexual love, female sexual responses, transcendent sex, sexual
energy, sexual myth and misogyny and sexual history - specifically where
female orgasmic ejaculation can be found in the Bible.
Time: 6PM Pacific You'll have to make adjustments for your time
zone. And the show is available later from the archives where you might
listen at your convenience.

Salem Needs a Home, Female Black Cat, NJ
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Mon Jan 10, 2011 3:13 pm (PST)
Most of you know that Cole & I have been struggling to find a home for a stray cat we found abandoned in our complex, who we have affectionately named Salem. We brought her to the vet last week & got her her
vaccines. Unfortunately, we have 4 cats already and simply not enough
room for Salem. We adore her. We refuse to put her back out into the
cold & snowstorms this winter. We refuse to bring her to a kill
shelter. Someone loved this cat enough to spay her and then left her
out in the woods to fend for herself. It's disgusting &
unforgivable.
While Salem is afraid of other cats & has the war wounds to prove why she should be afraid; she is nothing but lovable and affectionate towards
humans. She is a gorgeous jet black cat with the sweetest demeanor.
All she wants is to be loved and held. She deserves nothing less.
I'm writing this note because of the level of disgust I have for local area shelters and rescue organizations. Everyone refuses to help. I
understand that there is an overpopulation of animals in shelters. But
many of these places promote the fact that they do not kill adoptable
animals. At every turn, I've been shot down by group after group.
Today was the absolute last straw. I called Popcorn Park Zoo's Tinton Falls
shelter in the hopes they would be able to find Salem a good home. A
place she could stay where she would be comfortable and have the space
she needs until she found her forever home.
I spoke with a woman who was off-putting from the time she answered the
phone. I pleaded Salem's case, half expecting the same old "Thanks but
no thanks." line. Instead I was confronted with such a level of
rudeness that I am at a loss for words. She instructed me to bring
Salem to my town's shelter to which I replied (as any animal lover
would) "I don't want to bring her there because it's a kill shelter."
Her response? "We're ALL kill shelters."
I am stunned, angry and upset by such disrespect for life. Of all places to get such a response! Popcorn Park - who is always promoting how
they save the lives of animals every day; how they have a refuge for
abandoned or hurt animals. This woman has no business working for this
organization. Popcorn Park should be ASHAMED of themselves for this
behavior.
You will NEVER see me supporting Popcorn Park or any of it's related
facilities, EVER again. Though my pleas may fall on deaf ears, I urge
others to do the same.
On the flip side; the least likely of all candidates that will try to help us adopt Salem into her forever home, if we are able to foster her
until such a time comes - is Little Miracles Rabbit Rescue Inc. in South NJ. Every rescue organization should take a good look at what they are doing, "saving the world, one little life at a time" & aspire to be as caring and thoughtful. A big thank you to Kristi @ LMRR for trying
to help us find Salem her forever home.
Disgusted but Hopeful,
Jennifer

A Spell for Harmony and Peace
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Mon Jan 10, 2011 7:08 pm (PST)
A Spell for Harmony and Peace
Incense of the day: Honeysuckle
In a violet-colored cloth with a pleasing pattern, place a purple candle.
Next to it, place a small, flat dish of salt. Light some lavender
incense and breathe deeply, then let out your breath in a lovely tone.
As you breathe and intone, light the candle. Still your voice and draw a pentacle in the salt as you say:
By air, fire, water, earth, and spirit
Hearken my prayer, all those who hear it.
Let there be peace and let there be harmony.
Blessed be.
Wild and free.
Chant the verse nine times, and then return to your single tone. Breathe
deeply and envision being filled with this peace and harmony. Extinguish the candle in thankfulness.

Catnip
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Mon Jan 10, 2011 7:09 pm (PST)
Catnip!
It's more than just fun for your cat. Researchers in the Department of Entomology at Iowa
State University found that chemicals produced naturally in catnip
(Nepeta cataria) repel cockroaches. Folklore includes numerous claims
that catnip are repellent to insects and spiders. Results show that
when given a choice between a surface treated with these plant oils and
an untreated surface, cockroaches spent much more time on the untreated
surface. One researcher observed that "the roaches will venture onto
the treated surface, stop, turn around and walk off onto the untreated
surface." The chemical repellent in catnip is nepetalactone. Not every cat responds to the effects of catnip. If the cat doesn't have a
specific gene, it won't react. About 80% of cats do have the gene, and
enjoy the effects of catnip, which is purr-fectly safe and
non-addictive.
Catnip tea was a
regular beverage in England before the introduction of tea from China.
It is also used today as an herbal remedy for upset stomach, insomnia
(it contains a mild muscle relaxant), and cough.

Kagaba People of South America
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Mon Jan 10, 2011 7:18 pm (PST)
Mother of fields, mother of waters,
mother of mountains, we call out to you:
Whose seeds are we? To whom do we belong?
Mother of thunder, mother of trees,
mother of the world, we ask you:
Where did we begin? Where are we going?
Mother of the world, mother of the shaman's pole,
mother of temples, mother of the sky:
Where do we find you? When are you with us?
Mother of our dances, mother of the sun,
mother of fire, mother of all food:
Are you not the only mother we know?
~Kagaba People of South America
Throughout
the ages, on all continents, people have worshipped the divine feminine. But for many centuries in our culture, the vision of a universal mother has been supressed. There has been no great sky mother above us, no
great earth mother on whose body we walk. There has been no goddess to
whom we call out on dark nights when we, like lost children, yearn for
her comforting presence.
Yet hunger
for her has never died. Saints and heroines took her place, slaking
somewhat the human thirst for a primal mother who would care for her
human children as she does for the rest of the world. Now, in our day,
the goddess in her primal glory is reemerging.
She
has never left us; she has been there all along, however hidden and
denied. All we ever needed to do was call out to her. All we need to do
now is call out to her. She is there, and she will answer.
