Please check these thoroughly before you send them out. Circulating them and
frightening people into stopping medication they are SUPPOSED to be taking
can be just as dangerous as the inflated risks outlined in this chain
letter. Found on Snopes:

True: The woman in question did exist and did die of a stroke. However,
the initial e-mail circulating does not name the birth control product.
Furthermore, without breaching the laws protecting medical records, there is
no further means of verifying whether it was actually a birth control
product which caused the problem or not. We have only this chain letter as
evidence and that's neither unbiased nor conclusive.

The rest is a mish-mash of menstrual mythology, most of which is false and
some of which is potentially harmful.

Anyone who takes a birth control pill is aware that the possibility of
embolism exists. It's a low possibility which is further enhanced by
certain risk factors such as obesity, smoking, high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, and diabetes of either type. Taken as directed under the
guidance of a competent physician, these pills pose little health threat to
women and might even improve their health and well being.

I'm one of those women. I have polycystic ovarian disease, which means
among other things that I am infertile. The eggs do not travel where they
should but instead form painful cycts which, if they rupture, can cause
death. Meanwhile, the rest of the reproductive system sends out the message
that an egg has been released but forgets to tell the body that the egg
hasn't been fertilized, has not arrived where it should, will never actually
BE a baby. End result: incredibly painful menstrual cycles of prolonged
bleeding which occasionally merit blood transfusions to which is added
severe scarring which only complicates the problem. Left alone, that scar
tissue impedes other organs' functionality and cuts off nerves in the spine
until you're paralyzed and you lose control of your bladder and bowel
functions.

Who would want that if it's preventable? The birth control pills eliminate
that risk for me and for many others like me.

I also carry many of those risk factors. I've been on birth control most of
my adult life with no ill effects. That in and of itself ought to tell you
how remote and rare those complications are. I am:

- severely obese (500+ pounds due to other medical issues)
- already partially paralyzed and therefore sedentary (increases the risks
of clots in the legs)
- type II diabetic
- have high blood pressure
- have high cholesterol
- have miscarried several times
- had a prior stroke (due to an overdose of IV antibiotic which was
administered in the hospital by an incompetent nurse)

Yes, we have cycles for a reason...but a lot can go wrong with them. We
also have doctors and modern medicine for a reason, tools given to men and
women by the gods to do with as they will. Properly used, they benefit.
Remember THAT too.
