Lennox is an American Bull dog cross. On the 19th May 2010 he was taken from his loving home by Belfast City Council Dog Wardens simply because he was measured with a dress makers tape measure and deemed to be of a "Pit Bull Type" breed.

Please show that pagans care about animals by reading the details on the FB page and home website below:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Lennox/126654624030908?ref=ts

How can you help?

You can write a complaint to the Belfast City Council and complain like hell.

complaints@belfastcity.gov.uk

dogwardens@belfastcity.gov.uk

lightfoots@belfastcity.gov.uk

wylies@belfastcity.gov.uk

mcnaneyp@belfastcity.gov.uk

In particular you might address the Senior Dog Warden, Yolanda Elwood to offer any good reason why Lenox should not released immediately. <elwoody@belfastcity.gov.uk>

Please CC your email to: info@savelennox.co.uk

There are more stories on the home website.

Is it my ears, or does our friend really say "SHREW-stone" at .35, rather than "shew-stone" (i.e. show-stone) ?

familiars and other stuff

I seem to be in the minority in the pagan community for a number of reasons, but another one being that I do not have an affinity with cats and my 'familiars' - although I've never felt comfortable with that term - have always been dogs. I did have a strong bond one time with a black kitten that I raised and who was very special to me, but she left when my dog arrived. And it was my dog who was essential to my life, and not just my magical workings. She was my best friend for fourteen years, part of me, and feels like part of me is missing now that she's passed. But the canine connection goes further than that. When I was away for a year travelling overseas, times when I would be feeling totally lonely and just wanting her there to move about with me, a friendly dog would appear sometimes just trotting along beside me like they'd been with me the whole time. Would lift my spirits no end, and felt like it was somehow Brigid still making sure I was okay. A
Romany storyteller taught me that the horse and the dog were gifts of the goddess to help the Romany in their travels, and my family (we have a Romany great-grandmother) have always had strong connections with both.

But that's not why I've come onto this group today, just got interested in the previous discussion and thought I would contribute. Some of you may be interested in reading http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/taxing-time-for-witches-in-east/story-e6frg6so-1225983877547  It's an article on a dozen Romanian witches getting together publicly to cast spells against the government that has decided to tax them for the income they earn as witches. Only in the modern world! It does, maybe, call into question the assertion that witches do no harm. 'Modern' witches, neo-pagans, may hold to the three-fold law but is that the way of traditional witchcraft or a hangover from Christian morality, or even a way to try and make our pathway more socially acceptable? Would be interested in a discussion on this, the ethics of witchcraft both contemporary and traditional.

This is a fantastic article, Roxanne. Thanks for sharing it. It is great to hear of such things going on.

My two cents: Firstly, let's see whether it works or not. If it doesn't, they haven't done any harm. lol.

The three-fold law ? Wiccan rede? This might obtain in wicca (a new populist confection designed by Aleister Crowley in tandem with Gardner as a "gateway religion" to wean christian-conditioned people off it and eventually into their own freedom and power as individuals), but I don't think it has anything to do with actual witchcraft or magic as such.

Witches were always feared and persecuted, even in the ancient world, because of their ability to "harm" using magic, not only because non-witches did not understand them and made such things up.

A sword - is it good or bad? That depends which end of it you're at.

This fear stays in many traditional tribes in non-Christian cultures in New Guinea, Africa, Asia, and wherever traditional witchcraft has significant representation. And it is certainly not groundless.

I don't think real witches give a flying broomstick about social acceptance AS WITCHES (which would be something of a paradox to my mind), although they are likely to be veritable, well, "social butterflies", but as something else. Under the radar, as it were.

best regards, and happy exoteric new year.
C.B.
