Random Tidbits about Memorial Day

RANDOM TIDBITS

Memorial Day was a response to the unprecedented carnage of the Civil War, in which some 620,000 soldiers on both sides died. In 1864, women from Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, put flowers on the graves of their dead from the just-fought Battle of Gettysburg. The next year, a group of women decorated the graves of soldiers buried in a Vicksburg, Mississippi, cemetery.

Waterloo, New York., began holding an annual community service on May 5, 1866. Although many towns claimed the title, it was Waterloo that won congressional recognition as the "birthplace of Memorial Day."

Gen. Logan, the speaker at the Carbondale gathering, also was commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans. On May 5, 1868, he issued General Orders No. 11, which set aside May 30, 1868, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion...."

??????????????????????????????

From the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths and flags, the holiday was long known as Decoration Day. The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name in 1967.

On May 30, 1868, President Ulysses S. Grant presided over the first Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery -- which, until 1864, was Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's plantation. The principal speaker was James A. Garfield, a Civil War general, Republican congressman from Ohio and future president.

General Orders No. 11 stated that "in this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed," but over time several customs and symbols became associated with the holiday. It is customary on Memorial Day to fly the flag at half staff until noon, and then raise it to the top of the staff until sunset.

Emptiness Becomes Openness
Sometimes a Loss Can Be a Gain

While it is always important to honor what we've lost, sometimes a loss can also represent a chance for a new beginning.

When we lose anything that we cherish, the sense of emptiness we are left behind with can be overwhelming. A space that was filled, whether in our lives or our hearts, is now a void, and the feelings of pain, loss, and separation can sometimes be difficult to bear. While it is always important to honor what we've lost, sometimes a loss can also represent a chance for a new beginning. When we are ready, the void left by a relationship, a job, or a dream can then be viewed as open space that can be filled with something new: new experiences, new knowledge, new job opportunities, new dreams, new people, and new ways to grow.

There are many ways to weave the threads of loss into a blessing. If you've lost a job or ended a relationship, your first thoughts may revolve around filling the void with a similar job or the same kind of relationship. Try not to rush into anything just to fill up the emptiness. The loss of a job can free you up to explore new opportunities, especially if you've outgrown the old one. Likewise, the loss of a relationship can give you a chance to rediscover your own interests, explore new passions, and meet different people.

If seeking the good in what seems like a bad situation makes you feel uncomfortable, then try to remember that you are not devaluing what you've lost or replacing it cold-heartedly. You are surrendering to the fact that, in life, we sometimes have to let go and allow for what is new to enter into the open spaces created by our losses. In doing so, you are honoring what has left you and welcoming the new into your life with open space, an open mind, and an open heart.

Because I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity I'm unable to use oils. Do you think that dried or fresh basil leaves inhaled through a tissue would have the same effect?

How to use it: Apply a few drops to a tissue and inhale or add to a
diffuser. This is great to wake up and get your brain cells going.

I am sure that would work.

Daily Feng Shui Tip

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Monday, May 30
It's 'Memorial Day' and also the annual unofficial start to summer, so it's possible that the positive effects of the annual Spring clean might start to wane around these pre-summer days. It might be time to consider another seasonal cleanse to welcome even warmer days and some sultry, sexy and really hot nights. Take a good look as well as a good walk around your space, remembering to start at your front door and walk in a clockwise direction. After you've assessed, evaluated and then cleared any chaos and clutter, take some sea salt and place a tiny bit in every corner of every room in the whole house. Be sure to sprinkle a line of salt over every threshold as well and leave it there for twenty-four hours to follow. After that time has expired take a broom (and only a broom) and start sweeping away all this energy shifting, negativity absorbing salt. Collect it all into a single container that has a lid or some way of tightly closing it and dispose of it somewhere outside of your living space. Conversely, you can also flush it down the toilet. If you do decide to dispose down the drain, be sure to follow that with a flush of the juice of one fresh lemon. This is a powerful and effective cleanse that will allow you to open to new and wonderful opportunities! And we can confidently expect that the opportunities that come to us this season will be really hot! And that's nothing less than really cool!

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.
