Man purges park of witches
By Tyson Shine (News Journalist)
A Mount Gambier man has pleaded guilty to lighting a series of spot-fires in
the city to rid one of its parklands of evil spirits.
Police arrested 43-yhttp://www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2011/05/24/3225711
htmear-old Mathew Kennedy on Easter Sunday this year after witnesses
reported him for lighting petrol fires in Vansittart Park.
Kennedy told the Mount Gambier Magistrate's Court he had seen two girls
walking through the area who he thought were witches.
"It was just some girls walking down the street, they just looked a bit
strange, that's all," he told the court.
"The colour of their skin was strange."
The court heard Kennedy had been reading a book about witches only a few
days before the incident. He said the book told him how to cleanse places
witches had been.
Police prosecutors told the court there were at least five burn marks in and
around the park.
The court heard one of the witnesses had concerns for the safety of young
children playing in the park at the time of the incident.
Mount Gambier Magistrate Jack Fahey said Kennedy hadn't hurt anyone in his
actions.
Kennedy was not penalised or convicted of any charges because he had already
spent two hours in custody after the arrest.
Mount Gambier's mayor Steve Perryman said he was concerned about setting a
possible precedent for 'larrikin' behaviour.
"I would have thought that there'd be some sort of reprimand due for this
person who's undertaken that sort of behaviour," Mr Perryman said.
"How do judges know in the future how to deal with a group of people that
might just be sky-larking or practical joking in a similar fashion?"
