DailyOM: Letting Nature Work

DailyOM - Silent Change
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
January 3, 2011
Letting Nature Work
Silent Change
Often, when we are not looking, in the silence of nature's embrace, the miracle of change happens.
We all see things about ourselves, our relationships, and our world that we want to change. Often, this desire leads us to take action toward inner work that we need to do or toward some external goal. Sometimes, without any big announcement or momentous shift, we wake up to find that change has happened, seemingly without us. This can feel like a miracle as we suddenly see that our self-esteem really does seem to be intact, or our partner actually is helping out around the house more. We may even wonder whether all of our hard work had anything to do with it, or if it just happened by way of grace.
As humans, sometimes we have relatively short attention spans, and we can easily lose track of time. We may worry about a seedling in a pot with our constant attention and watering for several weeks only to find ourselves enjoying the blooms it offers and wondering when that happened, and how we didn't notice it. Nature, on the other hand, has infinite patience and stays with a thing all the way through its life. This doesn't mean that our efforts play no part in the miracle of change they do. It's just that they are one small part of the picture that finally results in the flowering of a plant, the shifting of a relationship, the softening of our hearts.
The same laws that govern the growth of plants oversee our own internal and external changes. We observe, consider, work, and wonder, tilling the soil of our lives, planting seeds, and tending them. Sometimes the hard part is knowing when to stop and let go, handing it over to the universe. Usually this happens by way of distraction or disruption, our attention being called away to other more pressing concerns. And it is often at these times, when we are not looking, in the silence of nature's embrace, that the miracle of change happens.

Flawed Premises Can Attract True Unwanted Evidence...
Flawed premises that you have picked up along your physical trail can fall
by the wayside, one by one, and you can return to the understanding that is
at the core of that which you are. (But in order to discover or understand
a false or flawed premise, you have to stand back far enough and reconnect
with who-you-really-are before you can see it.) If you were to hear a false
premise again and again, until you yourself began to believe and repeat it,
now your own activation of the contradictory Vibration would interfere with
your own sense of intelligence, and you would begin to attract evidence of
your lack of intelligence, in effect proving the false premise to be true.
And so, it becomes increasingly hard for you to call this a
"false" premise when the evidence seems to be telling you that
it is true, for over time you come to believe it is true.

The wolf has
many gifts to give you and many lessons to teach. You are blessed indeed to
have his spirit within your heart.
The wolf
will teach you how to balance individuality with society. There are times when
you know you must go your own way, expressing who you are in no uncertain
terms. There are times when your free spirit yearns only for the company of the
full moon. Let wolf strength and power fill you in those times when you know
you must stand alone.
But the wolf
will also teach you to be a part of a group, how to enjoy the love and
companionship of friends and family as well as how to take advantage of the
great success you can have when you work closely with others, fully aligned in
direction and purpose.
The wolf
will teach you how to balance these two sides of yourself. Let his intuition
help guide you in the best way to be right now, in each moment as it unfolds.
The wolf
will also give you great stamina and perseverance, the ability to continue for
miles, across ice and snow, until you reach your destination. Wolf spirit will
increase your intelligence and adaptability, so you are able to find the right
path, whether it is through a dense forest or crossing a snowy mountain.
Wherever
life takes you and however things are there, just reach down deep into your
heart and you will feel the wolf there, helping you find your way.

Quado's Garden: Discipline is Freedom and Love

Discipline is Freedom and Love
Today, learn to see discipline
as freedom and love. Discipline is love of yourself, because it is the pathway
to achieving what you wish to achieve. You may think that control is that
pathway, that trying to change and control the outer circumstances of your life
will open it up and finally bring you the happiness you seek, but it is not so.
The only control you can ever successfully exert is over yourself. The only
person you can change is yourself.
Leave off trying to control
others. Leave off trying to control what swirls around outside you. Instead,
focus on yourself, on building the habits and practices which will bring you
knowledge, accomplishment, skill and inner peace.
And from this will spring
freedom, the freedom to do many different things well, the freedom to express
yourself exactly as you wish to, because you have the skills necessary. Give
yourself the freedom to shine as an outward expression of your inner self, so
that your appearance, talents and manner all express exactly what you wish them
to express, because you have invested in yourself through caring discipline,
steady patience, day by day, every day, building a foundation of great strength.

Wisdom by Lea Greer
Posted by: "Ash" mhc4sure@yahoo.com mhc4sure
Tue Jan 4, 2011 5:50 am (PST)
These words need no more spoken than as they flowed forth with such love and insight. Namaste
Our time on this Earth has presented to us various versions of wisdom,
most having to do with the mind, the books and the intellect. What is
divine wisdom? This is a key attribute of the soul and with soul union
you gain the wisdom you hold within you. Far beyond the human
definitions of wisdom the keys to true wisdom are within you, to be
unlocked by laying aside false shyness, limitations, self-judgment and
all comparison to others. Wisdom lies as a great gift to be revealed in
its own time, step-by-step and then fully unalterable, unshakable,
embodied purely and completely through the love and compassion that you
are.
As you consider wisdom, you may think of unique individuals
who exemplify wisdom to you â€" Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother
Theresa, etc. What these individuals had in common was their ability to
go beyond the mind to the “heart†and follow that inner guidance without
fear. Stepping beyond the constraints of the ego’s shoulds and musts is
then the first step to wisdom -- the fearlessness of right action
regardless of whether or not it is “acceptable†to others and/or known
society.
When
we consider the wise one, or your wisdom we must step beyond the human
mind and the conditioning we have all gone through to “know.†Divine
knowing extends through the soul mind and considers all there is, as we
are all connected to and therefore affect all there is. None of us at
this juncture would purposely harm, however in the habits and patterns
of dualism we perpetuate harm if we remain in the ego, which is built
through the avoidance of harm in fear. We cannot stay free then of harm
and causing harm, even if it is unintentional, if we remain in this
dualistic state of mind â€" regardless of how educated and/or how
brilliant we are.
Knowing from the wisdom we all hold comes
eagerly forward instantly if allowed from soul. This incredible ability
we have to consider all that is seemingly in a flash, and then to
“decide†right action for all there is. There is no “I†in the soul. No
separate consideration of “me†first. All done is in consideration and
service to the greater whole. Not service through servitude, but service
through the love and joy of contributing to the wonders and beauty of
creation and life.
Wisdom is a common denominator and marking
stone for the soul’s evolution. As wisdom expands, so does the soul and
the soul’s abilities and contributions. A handmaiden to wisdom is
integrity, taking responsibility and honing to rightness in all things.
In human terms we always try to be “good, kind, thoughtful.†In soul
terms the flaws of these attempts are obvious because at the core we are
good, kind and thoughtful if we feel safe. There is no fear in the soul
and as you learn through experiences in and out of form you build your
knowledge, from this expansion of knowledge your ability to consider all
expands and wisdom grows.
As we move into a new way of living
here on Earth we must call upon our wisdom to guide us -- the wisdom of
the soul â€" not the learning of the mind. Remembering consciously who we
are allows us to tap into this deep, nourishing well for our lives and
the good of all life. Stepping beyond then, or stepping inward to tap
that which we truly know results in wise choices and these wise choices
are not predetermined by anything or anyone in the old lives we have
lived.
When I sold everything, furnishings, house, car, etc. to
leave the United States and move to France to open the seminary here
bringing my few boxes of clothes and personal items with me I shocked
many people â€" including my own family. This is not rational action, it
is not “smart†and I have always been viewed as smart. It’s true; I was
gifted with a great brain and have used it well. With that brain I have
read thousands of books, received multiple degrees, been the head of
large corporations, taught at universities â€" but what no one knew, and I
did not fully understand back then, was that it was never my intellect
that was “smart.†It was always a blending of education, experience and
something else -- a knowing that I could not describe. This knowing, I
realize now, was coming from my soul and when I listened life worked.
When I did not, well I experienced the consequences.
Our souls
are front and center all of our lives. The soul never went to sleep â€" we
just momentarily forgot who we were replacing ego beliefs for soul
knowing. We have all had experiences throughout our lives where we had
“hunches, intuition, a voice who spoke to us, or when we simply knew.â€
This is the soul wisdom coming through. When it is followed magic can
happen. When we allow the soul to step forward, lay aside the fears and
yearning to run from it, we allow ourselves to envelope true wisdom.
Wisdom that guides our lives seamlessly, wisdom that supports all that
is.
When you aspire to come home to yourself, your soul, this
must be done “no matter what.†We say this repeatedly yet many do not
understand the meaning. Our lives have been constructed on the rules of
duality, the ways of the dual world and harm. In this construct we
create a life that portrays to us safety above all else, for it is
safety that the ego yearns for in all things. Whatever your definition
of safe, that is what you conspire to create in your life, and if
anything changes to threaten that construct you move into fear. So, when
you are faced with “not matter what†your internal conscious or
unconscious thoughts center around safety, and the rules of living
continue. Was your life constructed then from your wisdom, or from
shoulds placed upon you since early childhood by a world that is afraid?
Consider this, if you allow the wisdom of your soul to step forward and
create change that brings forth a life that is not only truly safe but
fearless what have you lost? We are buried in material goods â€" does this
bring you true happiness, peace or safety? Is it written that if you
follow this wisdom within, you will lose the material comforts of life? I
have found that ownership does not exist, and that there is always
enough to shelter, feed and even pamper me, including when I acted on my
inner knowing “no matter what.†It is an abundant universe and it is
our right to receive our share and enjoy this beautiful planet while we
are here.
Wisdom then is never transient. It is within you in
each moment. The ability to call upon all you know to decide what is
best for all, right for all there is. You must be willing to allow it to
come forward, and you must be willing to enfold it as your truth and
act upon it. With this your ability to call upon this wisdom expands,
and the figuring out of old drops away â€" the decisions made out of fear
no longer plague you or color your life. With each step taken through
your soul’s wisdom you reap the true benefits of not only serving but
being served by all there is. You are the giver and receiver of all that
is in right order for you in this physical journey, and that is
wondrous beyond understanding by the little ego that cries wolf.

Raventalker's New Year

As most of you know i have been really sick for the past two weeks ...
ugggg .. yuck.. yuck and triple YUCK... with the flu topped with a nasty
sinus infection... so I have been left on my own in isolation for far
tooooooo long LOL... which gave me time to reflect on what I'd like to
see for the coming new year.
Soooooooooooooooo I thought I would share with you my thoughts for the
upcoming 12 months ...This year instead of focusing on obtaining new
things, gifts, abilities, etc...
I think I'll focus on fine tuning and improving on what I already have.
No wishing this was better or that was different ....
No wanting more and more ...
No ifs, ands or buts...
Just taking what I have and improving where I can... at my own pace ....
No time limits
No outrageous goals
No pressure
No fuss!
My goal this year is to just be me ... the best me that I can manage to
be...
I'm sure I'll have times of weakness...
Times of doubt
Uphill battles and downhill slopes
But that's life and most importantly ... MY life...
I'll enjoy the good times
Cringe and hope through the bad...
I'm sure to laugh
Sure to cry ...
But no matter what I'll enjoy the flight!
This year is a year for doing whats already been done... only better!
No need to reinvent the wheel for me... I'll be working on improving
myself and what I have to offer and hoping for a smoother ride!
May you all have a smoother ride this year with lots of love and
laughter to share....
Many Blessings,

Seeking Gaia
Kat Harrison and the Shamanic Plant Mind
by James Kent
Since the introduction of shamanic plants and medicines to Western
science, many anthropologists and laboratory wizards have struggled to
divine their cultural significance and figure out how they work their
peculiar magic. Yet, in spite of all the work done in university
laboratories, sterile hospitals, and million-dollar pharmaceutical
research wings, conventional science has done little to unravel the
ancient mysteries of shamanic healing power. Divorced from traditional
contexts, shamanic folk medicines and visionary practices have remained a
mystery. It is only recently, through the work of researchers in the
"softer" sciences of ethno- and entheobotany, that the true role of
these plants could be understood in terms the Western mind could
appreciate. It is not simply an "elevated consciousness" or an "altered
state" the shaman seeks through the use of these plants, but instead the
shaman is said to work his or her magic through an actual psychic link
to the pool of biological wisdom held within the network of all terran
life, often referred to as the "plant mind" or the "Gaian mind."
Despite the ancient wisdom and power offered by these plant spirits,
shamanic plants and practices are now threatened by the encroachment of
industrialized forces into rainforest societies. Not only is Western
"progress" gutting the fertile habitats of traditional shamanic plants,
but the displacement and assimilation of rural peoples has created large
gaps in the folklore vital to understanding their usage. Although many
people recognize the dangers posed to the shamanic tradition, few have
done as much as Kat Harrison to understand and preserve the fragile link
they provide between culture and environment. Harrison is president and
co-founder of Botanical Dimensions, a non-profit organization dedicated
to the collection, protection and propagation of plants of ethnomedical
significance and their lore.

KATHLEEN (KAT) HARRISON is an ethnobotanist, artist, and photographer
who researches the relationship between plants and people, with a
particular focus on art, myth, ritual, and spirituality. She has done

She brings a distinctly "feminine" approach to the study of psychedelic

Love Is The One Force

Love
is the One force, the One energy, of which we are All made. It is
through this force of Love that an unseen bridge connects the spirit
side of life (unseen to most) and the physical world. We ARE Spirit
clothed in flesh and clothed in other manners on other planets and
unknown numbers of Universes and Dimensions. Love is the equivalent of
life itself. Love is unconditional and embraces All. Realize and
remember that you ARE Love, you live in Love and you will only change
dimensions as you remain in Love. The outside covering or house that you
live in as Spirit will endlessly change and at times you may fly free
as pure Spirit! The most important thing to ever remember is you are
safe and you are so Loved. I love you!
Namaste!

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
Week beginning January 6
Copyright 2011 by Rob Brezsny
http://FreeWillAstrology.com
Grammar key: Asterisks equal *italics*
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "We have to stumble though so much dirt
and humbug before we reach home," wrote novelist Herman Hesse. "And
we have no one to guide us. Our only guide is homesickness." That's the
bad news, Capricorn. The good news, according to my analysis, is that
2011 could very well be the year that your homesickness drives you all
the way home. For best results, keep this tip in mind: To get the full
benefit of the homesickness, you shouldn't suppress it. Only by feeling it
deeply, as a burning, grinding ache, will you be able to ride it all the way
home.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In the past, few dog shows allowed mutts
to compete. Pure breeds were prized above all others. That's changing,
though, now that the American Kennel Club has opened up a new
category just for mongrels. They won't be judged by guidelines specific to
a particular breed, but rather according to their natural talents. This shift
in standards mirrors a comparable development in your world, Aquarius. In
2011, it'll be easier to find success simply by being your mottled,
speckled, variegated self. There'll be less pressure for you to live up to
standards of perfection meant for the pure breeds.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): "All your longings know where to go," writes
poet Nick Piombino, "but you have to tell them to open their eyes."
That's one of your big assignments in 2011, Pisces: to make sure your
longings keep their eyes open. It's not as easy as it might sound.
Sometimes your longings get so entranced by obsessive fantasies -- so
distracted by the stories that are swirling around in your imagination --
that they're blind to what's right in front of them. You must speak to
your longings tenderly and patiently, as you would a beloved animal,
coaxing them to trust that life will bring more interesting and useful
blessings than anything fantasy could provide.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): "A man may fulfill the object of his existence
by asking a question he cannot answer, and attempting a task he cannot
achieve," mused 19th-century author Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Advice
that wild could just as well have been dispensed by a feral saint living in a
cave in the woods. And now I'm passing it on to you, Aries, just in time
for the beginning of what may be your wildest year in a decade. In my
astrological opinion, you are ready to be a connoisseur of mysteries that
purify the mind and nurture the soul . . . a daredevil of the spirit in quest
of seemingly impossible dreams . . . a fierce adept of the wisdom of
uncertainty who's in love with unpredictable teachings.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): What confusing commotion would you like to
walk away from and never come back to? What lessons have you learned
so well that you're overdue to graduate from them? What long-term
healing process would you like to finish up so you can finally get started
on the building phase that your healing will give you the power to carry
out? These are excellent questions to ask yourself as you plan your life in
the next six months.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The Strait of Gibraltar is the narrow passage
between Europe and Africa where the Mediterranean Sea joins the Atlantic
Ocean. According to legend, in ancient times the Latin phrase "ne plus
ultra" was inscribed in the rock overlooking this gateway. It meant "not
further beyond," and served as a warning to sailors not to venture out to
the wild waters past the strait. Eventually, that cautionary advice became
irrelevant, of course. With a sturdy vessel, skilled crew, good preparation,
and expert knowledge based on the experience of others, venturing out
past the "ne plus ultra" point wasn't dangerous. I hope you'll take that as
your cue in 2011, Gemini.
+++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +
EXPLORING YOUR LONG-RANGE FUTURE
Would you like some inspiration as you muse and wonder about your
upcoming adventures in 2011?
In this week's EXPANDED AUDIO HOROSCOPES, I offer you Part Two of a
long-term, in-depth exploration of your destiny in the coming year.
Part Three will be available next week. Part One is still available.
Find out how to access them online at http://RealAstrology.com.
They are also available by phone at 1-877-873-4888.
+++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++++ +++++++++ +
CANCER (June 21-July 22): There were problems with the soccer balls
used in the World Cup last year. Many players felt they were difficult to
control. Their trajectory was unpredictable. Brazilian forward Luis Fabiano
went so far as to say that the ball "doesn't want to be kicked." Other
players said the balls were poorly made, like those "you buy in a
supermarket." I bring this to your attention as a cautionary metaphor,
Cancerian. In 2011 you will be taking part in your equivalent of the World
Cup. It will be crucial to have the very best tools and accessories. You
can't afford to play with balls that don't respond accurately to your
skillful means.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Biological diversity refers to the variety of life
forms in any particular area, while cultural diversity measures the richness
of social forms of expression. Then there's biocultural diversity, which
measures both together. Can you guess the places on the planet where
biocultural diversity is highest? They're Indonesia, Malaysia, Melanesia, the
Amazon Basin, and Central Africa. I would love it if you had a chance to
immerse yourself in environments like those in 2011, Leo. If you can't
manage that, find the next best thing. You will thrive by exposing yourself
to a kaleidoscopic mix of human types and natural influences.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): When I started my rock band World
Entertainment War, I was guided by a vision of us having two lead singers,
me and another person. Ultimately I chose a woman named Darby Gould
as my collaborator. While I have decent skills as a vocalist, her talent is
genius-level. I knew that our work together would push me to be at the
top of my game and allow me to write ambitious songs that I didn't have
the chops to sing by myself. I've always been pleased with how that
strategy worked. Would you consider giving yourself a similar challenge in
2011, Virgo? It'll be the Year of Collaboration for you. Why not put
yourself in a position to transcend the limitations you have when
operating solely under your own power?
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Africa is cracking open in preparation for the
birth of a new ocean. The whole process will take 10 million years, but the
first sign occurred in 2005, when a 37-mile-long fissure appeared in
Ethiopia. Eventually, say geologists, the rift will grow enormous and fill up
with seawater. I expect a metaphorically comparable development for you
in 2011, Libra: the subtle yet monumental beginning of a new "ocean"
you'll be enjoying and learning from and dealing with for many years to
come.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 1967, the U.S. had 31,225 nuclear
warheads. But by 2010 it had a mere 5,113. The world's most militarized
nation hopes to scale down to an even more modest 3,000 or so by
2021. In the coming year, Scorpio, I'd love to see you be inspired by that
example to begin reducing your own levels of anger and combativeness.
You don't have to do away entirely with your ability to fight everyone
who doesn't agree with you and everything you don't like; just cut back
some. I'm sure that'll still leave you with plenty of firepower.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): "The heart is forever inexperienced,"
said Thoreau. He believed our feeling nature is eternally innocent; that no
matter how much we learn about the game of life, sadness or lust or rage
or joy hits us as hard the thousandth time as it did in the beginning. But is
that really true? Are you as likely to plunge into mind-exploding
infatuation with your fourth lover as you were with your first? Are you as
susceptible now to having your world turned upside-down by flash floods
of emotion as you were at age 15? Over the years, haven't you acquired
wisdom about your reactive tendencies, and hasn't that transformed
them? I disagree with Thoreau. I say that for the person who wants to
cultivate emotional intelligence, the heart sure as hell better be capable of
gaining experience. What do you think, Sagittarius? If you're aligned with
my view, 2011 will educate and ripen your heart as never before.

DailyOM - Leaving A Relationship
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
January 4, 2011
The Direction Of Happiness
Leaving A Relationship
When attempts at working out issues in a relationship aren't working, it may be time to examine moving on.
One of the hardest decisions we ever make in life is leaving a long-term relationship that just isn't working. When attempts at repairing and working out issues aren't working, it may be time to examine moving on. We are emotional creatures, and when our heartstrings are tied to those of another, separating from that person can feel like an act of courage. It is not something most of us will take lightly, and many of us will struggle with our desire to stay in a relationship that is unfulfilling simply in order to avoid that pain. We may question whether the happiness we seek even exists, and we may wonder if we might be wiser to simply settle where we are, making the best of what we have.
On the one hand, we almost relish the idea that true happiness is not out there so that we can avoid the pain of change. On the other hand, we feel within ourselves a yearning to fulfill our desire for relationships that are vital and healing. Ultimately, most of us will follow this call, because deep within ourselves we know that we deserve to be happy. We all deserve to be happy, no matter where we find ourselves in this moment, and we are all justified in moving, like plants toward the light, in the direction that leads to our greatest fulfillment. First, though, we may need to summon the courage to move on from the relationship that appears to be holding us back.
Taking the first steps will be hard, but the happiness we find when we have freed ourselves from a situation that is draining our energy will outshine any hardship we undergo to get there. Keeping our eyes trained on the horizon, we begin the work of disentangling ourselves from the relationship that no longer fits. Every step brings us closer to a relationship that will work, and the freedom we need to find the happiness we deserve.

FANTASTIC SOLAR ECLIPSE: When the sun rose over Europe this morning, a piece of it was missing. The Moon had covered as much as 86% of the solar disk, producing a partial solar eclipse and a fantastic crescent-shaped sunrise. The most amazing apparition, however, may have occurred in the Sultanate of Oman, where for a split second the Moon and the International Space Station partially eclipsed the sun at the same time. Tarot Class with Katia
Journey through the Tarot
* This fun workshop will introduce you to the basic archetypal patterns of all time.
* The archetypes of the Tarot will bring the individual into a whole new world, one where images become great storytellers of truth.
* Each card represents a different archetypal energy within us, or a force outside of us. The images will introduce the student to the different archetypal energies and their polar manifestations, as each image can express itself in a challenging form or a more positive way. By getting to know the archetypal energies within us we can successfully employ them to our benefit clearing blocks moving forward positivly.

Epiphany Eve -During the week before Epiphany, Italian children sometimes dress up and go in groups of three, carrying a pole with a golden star on top, and
stopping at houses to sing pasquelle, little songs about the coming of
the Magi. Sometimes they are given money, but other places they receive
gifts of food sausages, bread, eggs, dried figs and wine. In some small
rustic towns, the Nativity is re-enacted on Epiphany Eve with the newest baby in town taking the part of Jesus.
In Friuli, families
gather around the hearth to watch the Christmas log burn. For centuries, bonfires have been lit to light the way for the Three Kings. The fires
are called pan e vin, bread and wine, or vecja, old one. Boys run
through the fields carrying burning brands, jump across the fires, and
roll burning wheels down the hill, shouting out the names of their
fiancées as a way to announce their engagements (see Epiphany, Jan 6).
The ashes from the bonfires are used to fertilize the earth and assure a good harvest.
Carol Field describes an Epiphany procession in
the town of Tarcento which ascends a hill to where a huge bonfire, made
of sheaves of corn, brambles of brushwood and pine branches is set up.
The fire is lit by the oldest man and ignites firecrackers and fireworks while bells ring in the town. The way the smoke blows foretells the
prospects for the coming year: smoke blowing east predicts a year of
abundance while smoke blowing west is a bad omen for the crops. People
take home embers to fertilize their fields; the embers are magically
said to transform into sacks of wheat.
In some places, a straw
effigy of the Befana is placed on the fire and burned as a way of
getting rid of the old year. Sometimes chestnuts are thrown on the fire
and roasted, as a symbol of fertility.
Traditional foods served
in Friuli on Epiphany Eve include mulled wine and pinza, a rustic sweet
bread, made with corn flour (or sometimes rye and wheat), filled with
raisins and pine nuts and figs, spiced with fennel seeds and shaped like a simple round or a Greek epsilon with three arms of equal length. It
was once cooked under the embers. It is considered good luck to eat
pinze made by seven different families.Source: Field, Carol, Celebrating Italy, William Morrow 1990
Theodosia/Gift of God - On this day on the island of Andros in ancient Greece, the water of a
spring by the temple of Dionysos tasted like wine. This continued for a
week although it only tasted like wine inside the temple.
This
was the same day in Alexandria that water was drawn from the Nile as
part of the ceremonies of the Koreion (see above). Blackburn notes that
Aion (the miraculous child of Kore) was associated with Sarapis and
Dionysus which may be why the liturgy for this day commemorates the
miracle at the wedding-feast of Cana when Christ turned water into wine. Source:Blackburn, Bonnie and Holford-Strevens, Leofranc, The Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999

Feast of Befana (The Italian Xmas Witch)...January 5

Feast of Befana (The Italian Xmas Witch)...January 5
Italian Christmas Witch
Color of the day: Gray - Incense of the day: Narcissus
Befana is an Italian Crone goddess, and this is her feast day. She is a kindly old woman dressed in patches, riding a broom, delivering treats to good children and coal to naughty ones. Here is a spell to invite Befana’s
blessings into your home. At dusk, lay your broom next to your
threshold. Leave an offering of bread, honey, and cumin seed as a gift
to Befana. Light a stick of frankincense incense nearby where it will be safe. Then say:
Befana, Befana, Befana flying the night,
Bless this home as you pass on your flight
Befana, Befana, Befana whisk troubles away
Leave your blessings and good luck we pray.
As her spirit passes your threshold on this her feast night, she’ll gather sustenance from your offering and leave her blessings of luck on your
doorstep. Leave treats for children in your home in her name.

Today's Goddess: BEFANA Befana Fair (Italy)
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Tue Jan 4, 2011 8:36 pm (PST)
Today's Goddess: BEFANA
Befana Fair (Italy)
Themes: Overcoming Evil; Wisdom
Symbols: Broom; Horns; Hag Poppets
About Befana: Befana is the Italian Crone Goddess. Call on her for wisdom and
guidance through the other eleven months of the year. Because she has
lived a long life, her astute insight will serve you well. Today is her
festival day in Italy, celebrated with horns, noise makers, songs, and
music. These loud sounds drive out evil and mark the passage of winter's darkness out of the region.
To Do Today: Have any children in your life follow the Italian tradition of leaving
Befana a broom to fly on and a gift basket. According to legend, Befana
rewards this kindness with little gifts in stockings much like Santa
Claus.
Find a "kitchen witch" at a gift shop and hang it up near the hearth to welcome Befana's wisdom into your home.
Or, take a broom clockwise around your house, sweeping inward toward a central spot to gather her beneficent energies.
To protect your home
for the rest of the year, use a kazoo or other noise maker (pots with
wooden spoons work well). Go into each room and make a loud racket
saying,
All evil fear! Befana is here! Away, away, only goodness may stay.
If your schedule
allows, make a poppet that looks like an old woman. Fill it with dried
garlic, pearl onions, and any other herbs you associate with safety.
Keep this near the stove or hearth to invoke Befana's ongoing
protection..By Patricia Telesco ~ From "365 Goddess"

La Befana - The Celebration of Epiphany

La Befana - The Celebration of Epiphany
By GrannyMoon
Holidays in Italy are rich in traditions which have, for the most part,a religious history.
A favorite Italian holiday occurs on January 6.It is commonly known as "La Befana "
(Twelfth Night or the Eve of the Epiphany or Little Christmas ). La Befana is a personification of
the "spirit of the Epiphany " and can almost be considered a nickname for "Epifania," the proper
Italian word for epiphany. While the Western Christian Church celebrates December 25th,the
Eastern Christian Church to this day recognizes January 6 as the celebration of the nativity.
January 6 was also kept as the physical birthday in Bethlehem.
Tradition depicts La Befana as a kindly old lady with a stereotypical nose with a big red mole on
top of it and a pointy chin.Wearing an old coat mended with carefully with colorful patches and
tattered shoes, she flies around on a broom and carries her black bag filled with sweets and
presents for the children.Entering the houses through the chimney she places her gifts inside
the children ’s stockings hung with care, the night before. The buoni ragazzi (good kids)are very
happy to find their stocking filled with presents. They have been busy writing letters to La Befana,
la buona strega (good witch). But for the children who have not been good, there will not be
presents,but a lump of coal!
The origin of the tradition is veiled in mystery and in all likelihood this poetic figure goes
back to country legends of pre-Christian times.Befana also exists in various other popular
traditions. For instance on the evening of January 5 th ,"The Old Woman " ((symbolizing the
out going winter),Befana appears in street processions as a masked figure with her consort,
"Befano ","The Old Man ".Their followers revel as music fills the street, they receive
offerings, the gift of prosperity and blessings from Befana. Then to assure a good year,
the dolls are burned in effigy in the town square, welcoming the returning spring.
Her festival has usurped an ancient pagan feast set celebrated on the Magic Night, the 6th day of
the New Year, chosen by ancient Eastern astronomers according to their complicated calculations.
Epiphany was, therefore, pagan in origin.Only later was the day associated with the life of Christ.
Apparently there was a woman with a broom called Befana found on some Etruscan scratchings.
The people in remote areas of the Emilia still call on her by that version of the name to bestow or
cure malocchio (evil eye).Even la scopa (the broom)is considered a blessing against evil.
In Italy tradition, however, the Christmas holidays ending on 6th January,is quite fitting for a gift-
giver since the Feast of the Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi (or 3 Wise Men)to the
infant Jesus, with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Magi were named Balthazar,
Melchior, and Gaspar, according to tradition.According to legend the three men during their
journey stopped and asked an old woman for food and shelter. She refused and they continued
on their way.Within a few hours the woman had a change of heart but the Magi were long gone.
The Befana is depicted as a witch astride a broom, still searching the world for the Baby Jesus.
Thinking of the opportunity she had missed,Befana stops every child to give them a small treat in
hopes that one was the Christ child. Each year on the eve of the Epiphany she sets out looking
for the baby Jesus.
Many welcome La Befana by laying out a small meal for her.Consisting of sausage and
broccoli and usually accompanied by a glass of wine. After her arrival, it is a time for celebration
and people move from house to house visiting friends and relatives.
This is a song used by some Italian children,a rough translation into English would be:
La Befana comes at night
In tattered shoes
Dressed in the Roman style
Long live la Befana!!
She brings cinders and coals
To the naughty children
To the good children
She brings sweets and lots of gifts.
Take frankincense, both of the best and the inferior kind, also cumin seed.Have ready a
separate scaldino (spirit bowl),which is kept only for this purpose. And should it happen that
affairs of any kind go badly, fill the scaldino with glowing coals, then take three pinches of best
incense and three of the second quality, and put them all ‘in fila ’ (in a row)on the threshold of the
door. Then take the rest of your incense and the cumin, and put it into the burning coal, and
carry it about, and wave it over the bed and in every corner, saying:
.
In nome del cielo!
Delle stelle e della luna!
Mi levo questo mal d ’occhio
Per mia maggior ’ fortuna!
Befana!Befana!Befana!
Che mi date mal d ’occhio maladetta sia
Befana!Befana!Befana!
Chi mi ha dato il maldocchio
Me lo porta via
E maggior fortuna Mi venga in casa mia!
.
Translation:
In the name of heaven
And of the stars and moon,
May this trouble change
Befana!Befana!Befana!
Should this deed be thine;
Befana!Befana!Befana!
Take it away,bring luck,I pray,
Into this house of mine!
Then when all is consumed in the scaldino, light the little piles of incense on the threshold of the
door, and go over it three times, and spit behind you over your shoulder three times, and say:
Befana!Befana!Befana!
Chi me ha dato maldocchio!Me lo porta via
Translation:
Befana!Befana!
Befana!I say,
Since thou gavest this bad luck,
Carry it away!
Then pass thrice backwards and forwards before the fire, spitting over the left shoulder, and
repeating the same incantation.
Looking for a place to celebrate in the typical Italian tradition...here are a few!

The legend of the Befana has had an important role in the imagination of all children of the world.
Those who wish to relive the magic of the first wonders of infancy and understand the meaning
and origins of this extraordinary figure, should be prepared to undertake a long voyage that will
carry them back in time,to the origins of human ’s history.
This little old lady so dear to children has continued to fascinate them for centuries, and they still
await her arrival on the night of her holiday. The gatherings at La Befana are filled with music,
song, traditional foods, sweets and gifts.Celebration reigns supreme, with people opening their
hearts by sharing love and peace in the World.
