Truth and Justice
On this day in 1692, the governor of Massachusetts sent the letter that
ended the Salem Witch trials. In this season of remembering our
ancestors, take time at your altar to light two candles—one white and
one black. Light the white one for the victims of persecution, both
those falsely accused and those hunted for their beliefs. Light the
black one as a statement against intolerance, injustice, and violence.
Obtain a list of the names of those persecuted and executed during the
Salem Witch trials, the European Witch trials, and add names of people
you know who have been discriminated against because they practice magic
or are Wiccan, Asatru, Romani, Pagan, or even Jewish or Christian.
Remember the many nameless victims being falsely accused of witchcraft
even today in Africa, the Middle East, and India. Look at your list and
light your candles every day between now and Samhain.

Re: Putting the Spookiness Back in Halloween
Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com nightshayde99
Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:15 pm (PDT)
Here it is again Tiamat.
I couldn't see the words...:(
Putting the Spookiness Back in Halloween
The wind blows leaves across the path. The rains come early and often. There
is a bite in the air that wasn't there a month ago. Halloween is coming and
the veil between the worlds grows thin. Soon, the dead will walk the earth
once more.
As many Pagans celebrate their holidays by the Christian names Lammas (Mass
of the Loaves) and Candlemas (Mass of the Candles) instead of Lughnasad and
Brigid, I choose Halloween over the more traditional Samhain. In our
culture, it is Halloween that invokes the images of the dead rising again.
After a few years, I got tired of Samhain. Samhain, it seems to me, has
degenerated into a yearly "Let's have tea and cookies with dear dead Grandma
who just must have been a Witch even though she went to church every week."
Once again we would go to the Cauldron of Rebirth (or some other
transformative image) and get rid of our old selves and transform into our
new selves (just like we did in half of the other holidays in the year).
I wondered what was wrong. Why did I tell everyone that Halloween was my
favorite holiday when I didn't enjoy Samhain? Halloween is fun. It is a time
of power and mystery. It is spooks and goblins and all the darker sides of
life. Samhain is a sanitized happy trip to the Isle of Apples. I decided I
wanted Halloween again. I wanted the spookiness back.
Unlike any other Pagan holiday, Halloween is purely a time of death. The
harvest is done and the winter is coming. The wheel is turning to the dark
side and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. (OK, OK - You can
jump across the wheel, by moving to the Southern Hemisphere, but that's
about it.) Everything that lives also dies. If you celebrate the life in the
trees, don't forget their death. Even the Fey will die if no one remembers
them. Halloween is the time to celebrate death. Death isn't just a path to
rebirth, it is a power in its own right. It gives meaning to life. On
Halloween we celebrate the passing of time and remember those who have lived
before.
At Halloween, the veil between the worlds grows thin. The dead cross back
into the land of the living. This means all the dead, not just those we
admire. For every great artist or inspirational thinker, there is also a
serial killer or slave trader. Not to mention a dozen or so completely
average dead who just want a night out. While your dear departed brother
comes back on Halloween, so does the idiot drunken jock that was driving
during the wreck that killed them both. The dead are both good and bad. It
is a powerful and scary thing to have them all wandering about again. In
times past, people left out Soul Cakes to appease the huge mass of dead out
on Halloween. The dead would take the Soul Cakes and not disturb the living.
This is important unless you are completely at peace with all your dead.
Modern Pagans often forget that there are lots of dead out there. How many
ancestors do you have? I have two parents, and they have two parents and so
on. How many of your living relatives are going to talk to the dead this
year? As you can see, there are many dead for each living pagan who wants to
talk to them. This doesn't even count all the friends, animals, and
miscellaneous spirits important to you, both good and bad. By always
concentrating on the same few usually human ancestors, you miss the richness
of Halloween.
With these ideas in mind I created the Ritual of the Forgotten Dead for
Halloween last year. The idea was to create a space where the dead who no
one ever remembers get a chance to be heard. It is a chance for you to
mingle outside your normal circle of friends, if you will. There are a few
different ideas here that I will talk about as they come up in the ritual.
Have fun. We are all going to die; celebrate it while you can! Make it as
spooky and mysterious as death is.
Ritual of the Forgotten Dead
Set up the space: Find an indoor space where you can have lots of candles.
Fill the space with candlelight and decorations, if you can. You will be
reading and writing by candlelight. Black candles are ideal, but any will
do. Decorations should make you think of death. Most normal Halloween
decorations, such as skeletons, spiders, etc., will work fine. Set up your
altar as normal for Persephone in Her Queen of the Dead aspect.
Cast the circle: My own preference is not to cast a circle for this ritual.
A circle keeps out the spirits that you don't specifically invoke. The idea
of the ritual is to talk to those same spirits. A circle seems
self-defeating. My circle-mates, on the other hand, were very nervous about
calling spirits without the protections that a circle provides. We cast the
circle. If you cast a circle, make it strong and be aware that later
Persephone will be opening a gate in it.
Invoke the elements: This is a ritual for the dead, and that includes the
elements. Concentrate on the "ghosts" of the various elements and be
creative. Try to see them in new ways from how you normally look at them.
Here are the invocations we used.
Ghosts of the Wind, Spirits of the West, I call you! By the fallen leaves
that mark your passing and the phantom of solar wind, come and join our
circle! Bring us your knowledge of the last breath we exhale in death!
Ghosts of the Fire, Spirits of the South, I call you! By the ashes of the
funeral pyre and death of the Sun in eclipse, come and join our circle!
Bring us the passion of a flame burnt briefly bright, but now blackened and
cold!
Ghosts of the Water, Spirits of the West, I call you! By the concealing
mists of water evaporated and bones and silt of a dry riverbed, come and
join our circle! Bring us the secret wisdom of a body washed up on the
shore!
Ghosts of the Earth, Spirits of the North, I call you! By the sand of
mountains destroyed and the dust in an age old grave, come and join our
circle! Bring us the still strength of the wreckage after an avalanche or
earthquake!
Invoke the Goddess:
There are a few possible choices here, but I chose Persephone. It is as
Queen of the Dead that Persephone came into her own. She cast off her
"flower child" upbringing and became co-ruler of the Underworld. It was
Persephone, not Hades, who let Euridice go because of the beauty of Orpheus'
music. Hecate, the popular pagan choice for Queen of the Dead, represents a
significant misreading of the relevant mythology. Hecate was the Witches'
Goddess. She found the way to the Underworld, but did not rule there. She
didn't even lead the dead there, that was one of Hermes jobs. Hel would work
well in this ritual if you like the Norse mythology. She was the sole ruler
of the original Hell that bears her name. Reincarnation death goddesses like
Kali should be avoided as their dead always walk the earth as their new
reincarnated selves. Here is the invocation we used. Pomegranates should be
avoided lest the invocation get out of hand.
Lady Persephone, Queen of the Dead, we call You! You whose passing turns the
Wheel. Beautiful queen who rules the Evermoor, come join our circle this
night so that we may give voice to Your chosen. Come and join us Persephone,
on this Your night!
Invoke the God: Actually, I prefer not to invoke the God in this ritual.
Following the Wheel of the Year, the God is dead now, and not yet reborn.
The god candle on the altar should just be left unlit, preferably with a
burnt wick symbolizing that His time came and went. If you really want a
God, Hades, the husband of Persephone, would be a good choice. Lugh or
Jesus, both in ghostly form, might also work as gods who have died and led
the way out of death.
The working: Here is where the spirits get to speak. Tell Persephone that
the time is now. Ask her to open the Gates to the Underworld and bring to
the circle those forgotten dead who most deserve to speak. Let Her do the
choosing and calling. Here is the form we used.
Lady Persephone, Queen of the Dead, the time is now! Open Your gates as You
did for Euridice, and let Your people out! Bring to us those who most need
voice, those deserving forgotten dead who have too long been silent! Bring
them to us that we might do Your work and guard us from those spirits who
might do us ill. Bring out Your dead, and protect us from all harm!
Each person should light a candle in front of them and begin automatic
writing* by its light. Do this for no more than five minutes. If you haven't
practiced, five minutes is a long time to automatic write. Whoever has been
calling Persephone should remain outside the working to monitor energy,
watch for problems, and watch the clock. This kind of working is a bit much
for some people and having someone "taking care of things" will help matters
along. Don't worry, the spirit show is just as fun inside as out. After five
minutes, call a stop and talk to Persephone again. Ask her to get rid of all
the spirits and protect us from them. If you are not careful about doing so,
this is a good way to get haunted.
Lady Persephone, Queen of the Dead, let the Wheel turn again and return Your
people to Your Realm. We have given voice to Your people, now gather from us
from those who would stay as You gathered Euridice after Orpheus turned.
Lady Persephone, recall Your people and close Your gates!
Now everyone can sit and share. Give voice to the spirits by reading their
words to each other. If you wish, now is a good time to do libations (food
and drink), being careful to leave some for Persephone. This should be fun.
The spirits say odd things. Share and enjoy.
Dismiss Everything: As usual, dismiss the God (if called), Persephone, the
Elements, and open the circle (if cast). The dismissals are usually based on
the invocations so I'm not going to repeat all of them.
The idea with this ritual is to have fun and revel in the unique energies of
Halloween. It is a time of death and the dead, so celebrate them. There no
need to weaken death by only seeing the rebirth aspects or to pretend that
all the dead are happy-mommy guidance figures. Halloween is awesome and
potent. The mysteries of death are seen in the raging heart of the storm as
well as the quiet nighttime passing of a loved one. Halloween rituals should
reflect this.
*Automatic Writing
Automatic writing is a way to get at hidden things. By yourself, it can act
as a way of getting at your unconscious mind or helping you to see things in
a different way. With the proper energies invoked, it can act as a form of
divination like tarot cards or scrying. If you use it with spirits around,
it can allow them a voice to speak, kind of like a Ouija board. In the end,
it is just another tool any witch should have in her cauldron to use as she
sees fit.
Remove any distractions from your area. Sit somewhere you can write. Put the
paper down and put the pen on it. Focus your mind on your idea. If you are
doing introspection, hold your image in mind. If you are doing divination,
think of the Fates, or Nemesis, or a clock, or whatever imagery seems
appropriate to you. If you are communing with the spirits, think of them.
Write whatever word first pops into mind. Then write whatever word second
pops into mind. Repeat as necessary.
The key here is not to think about the words at all. Just write them as they
occur. Try not to even think about what they mean, otherwise you will start
directing things. If you find yourself doing word associations like
dog-cat-food-pizza-pepperonci ni-pepper- salt-sea- etc...your mind is
interfering. Don't try to link the words or find meanings. There is plenty
of time for that when you are done. Just take it one word at a time and try
not to think about what comes next. If you get stuck, just write anything.
The act of writing may start the flow again. This is not easy. Five minutes
is a long time to do this, so don't get discouraged.
When you are done, look at what you have written. It will probably be weird.
Read as many hidden meanings and subtle nuances into it as you see fit. Some
stuff will probably be cool, some will be really stupid. Take whatever is
meaningful to you. If you are not linguistically inclined, it can be done in
other media. I've seen artists just add random picture after picture to a
page and then try to make sense of it at the end. It can even work for
typing at a computer. With that in mind....
I see a dog with a scarf before me. He has a balloon near by. At a beach,
the river ends.

Progressive Witchcraft

Excerpt from "Progressive Witchcraft" compiled by Janet Farrar:
"Those who follow the path of Progressive Witchcraft seek that which is best for all, both from nature and from themselves. "Good" and "Evil" are recognized as human concepts, alien to nature, that comes about by imbalance. They seek to balance themselves and the world around them. For this reason Witches are intrinsically healers in all aspects of their work who see magick, ritual, practice, and the use of psychic skills as nothing more than tools to achieve this goal.-----From my BOS

Wicca or Heathen
Posted by: "Gary Reese" hyperreal69@yahoo.com hyperreal69
Thu Oct 13, 2011 12:55 pm (PDT)
This is taken from the website www.heathengods.com :Similarities and Differences
Between Heathenry and Wiccaby Arlie Stephenshttp://ansuz.worldash article discusses the similarities and differences between Heathenry.org/asatru/ articles/ intro/wicca_ compar.htmlThis
and Wicca.
It is not the first article that's been written comparing the two religions. In
particular, Devyn Gillette and Lewis Stead wrote
Hammer
communication between them.
That article's only real flaw is that the authors don't really seem to
empathize with Wiccans. They focus on the questions that Heathens care
about, rather than those that tend to catch the attention of Wiccans. And
their discussion of history has a tendency to irritate many people with
Wiccan backgrounds.
The present article is an attempt to provide information from a more
Wiccan viewpoint. It is intended for those with a Wiccan or partially Wiccan
background who find themselves interested in Heathenry. It attempts to
explain the similarities and differences between Wicca and Heathenry in
familiar terms, since the terms Heathens use when talking to each other
may be quite confusing.
Like all general descriptions, it will be only partially correct. Like Wiccans,
there are many different groups of Heathens, each with different beliefs
and practices. On the extremes, Heathens may be as different from each
other as (e.g.) lesbian seperatist feminist egalitarian Dianic Wiccans are
different from hierarchical initiatory Gardnerian Wiccans, or as either of
these are from eclectic humour loving Discordian Wiccans.
However, just as with Wiccans, there are common elements most agree
on, and it is these common elements I will attempt to convey.
Let's start with some commonalities. Both are modern polytheistic religions
that draw on older pre Christian roots. Both often feel a strong connection
with the earth and the creatures that share the earth with humans. Both
tend to believe the gods are active in the world, and interact with their
worshippers.
Both believe that anyone can make their own connections with the gods;
no one needs a specialist to contact the gods for them. Many Wiccans,
especially the older traditions, initiate everyone as priest/priestess, so
there are no specialists. Other Wiccans, and most Heathens, have a role
for specialized clergy, but it's as advisers, teachers, leaders of big/fancy
rituals, organizers of small groups, and interfaces with the public, not as
having some privileged pipeline to the gods, or mediating between lay
people and gods. In particular, a lay Wiccan or lay heathen can do just
about anything, except where there's an issue of legal recognition, or, in
the case of Wiccans, of initiation. (Wiccan initiation
special powers, but they are not needed for basic connections and
communication with the gods.)
Now some big differences. While neither religion is monotheistic, Heathens
tend to be much more strongly polytheistic. Heathens see the gods and
goddesses as individuals; Thor and Odin are no more seen as aspects of
the same god than Tom and Joe are seen as aspects of the same human.
(Wiccans, on the other hand, often see all gods as aspects of the Horned
God, and all goddesses as aspects of the Great Goddess.)
Many Wiccans also see polarity, especially gender polarity, as one of the
key organizing principles of their worldview. In particular, most worship
rituals include a symbolic union of the God and Goddess (athame and
chalice). Heathenry does not include any such concept.
Wiccan circles tend to have a ceremonial magic flavor. Sacred space is
created and protected, power is raised, and the gods are invoked. Magic or
some sort of guided meditation may be done. Heathen blots, on the other
hand, have more of a flavor of inviting a friend over for a drink or a meal.
In fact, that seems to be one key aspect of the Heathen attitude to our
gods ... they are our kin, or our friends. Like us, but more experienced and
able to do things we cannot. ... Some believe they are literally our
ancestors. Wiccans tend to have a more "conventional" attitude to the
gods, being much more likely to worship them than to invite them to a
party.
Wiccan circles pretty much always involve some attention to the four
elements, generally seen as earth, air, fire, and water. Some Heathens
may pay some ritual attention to the 4 or 6 directions, but many do not, and
very few associate the directions with elements.
Many branches of Wicca are initiatory, with secrets reserved only for
initiates. Moreover, there are commonly three grades of initiation, with
initiates passing through the three degrees one by one. Heathenry is not
initiatory, and there are no secrets. Moreover, while a distinction is made
between clergy and laity, and some heathen organizations have some kind
of rank or status within the organization, there's no shared idea of a
progression between levels, with ever growing wisdom and spiritual
insight.
Some things are deceptively similar. It would be possible to compose a
table of correspondance for Heathen and Wiccan terminology. It would
have entries like "coven" = "kindred"; "priest" = "godhi"; "circle" = "blot". It
would also be quite misleading. Kindreds aren't generally organized like
covens, though there are commonalities, and don't serve quite the same
purpose. A Wiccan priest or priestess has somewhat different training and
responsibilities than a Heathen godhi or gythia. A "blot" is strictly religious,
whereas a "circle" can be for worship, magic, or both.
Then there are the social similarities and differences. In general (with at
least as many exceptions as any stereotype) Wiccans tend to be socially
and politically liberal, while Heathens tend to be socially and politically
conservative. Wiccans tend to a consensus seeking non-confrontational
communication style, whereas Heathens tend towards emphatic
statements of their opinions. Heathens also tend to be a lot more
independent and forceful than Wiccans, and tend to expect the same from
each other; a polite introvert is likely to completely fade into the woodwork,
and leave, feeling unwanted and ignored ... whereas Wiccans are more
likely to freeze out a newcomer who is not sufficiently polite and
deferential.
Another big difference is the attitude to historical research. While there is a
huge range in both communities, Wiccans are, in general, much more
likely to be interested in mythological or emotional rightness (how
something feels), where Heathens are more likely to focus on scholarly
research (what sources can be documented, and how reliable are they). In
particular, Heathens
tend to distinguish carefully between things recently invented and things
derived from the recorded lore. A person who cannot identify their sources
is likely to be laughed at or at least be somewhat forcefully educated ...
often by someone citing primary sources or recent scholarly work.
Wiccans, on the other hand, may or may not care about scholarship, but
very commonly consider it extremely rude to point out the improbability of
someone's claimed "historical" tradition.
Both communities have a certain amount of interest in connecting with
historical and cultural roots. Many Wiccans are very interested in all things
Celtic, and heavily identify as Celts. Heathens, on the other hand, take this
a lot farther. At one extreme, there are those who believe that the Heathen
gods are only interested in those humans who are descended from them,
i.e. the descendants of those who worshipped them in pre Christian times,
and no one else can or should be Heathen. Whether or not Heathens
share that view, or feel the gods call whomever they wish, they still tend to
be very interested in their ancestral heritage. Blots are done to ancestors
(physical and spiritual) as well as gods. Many dress up in Viking costume
to worship, or take an interest in pre-industrial crafts. I personally have
found myself taking up sewing as a connection with my female ancestors.
Wiccans (especially relative newbies) often think that all pagans are
basically similar to Wiccans, with perhaps a different pantheon. or some
minor changes. Heathens, on the other hand, often feel like they are
sharing a (neo-pagan) tent with a (Wiccan) elephant ... they feel like they're
being constantly misunderstood and misrepresented as "Wiccans
worshipping Norse gods" and consequently often refuse to accept the
name "pagan" at all, treating "pagan" and "neopagan" as referring only to
Wiccan-derived religions.
This can cause a lot of misunderstanding and resentment. The Wiccans
and Wicca-derived Pagans see the Heathens as natural allies ... and get
rebuffed with a confusing insistence that Heathens have nothing to do with
paganism, or have nothing in common with Wiccans. Heathens who
attempt to approach Wiccans and Wicca-derived Pagans often treat them
as "just like Heathens" ... and wind up shaking their heads in bewildered
anger when rebuffed as rude, aggressive, and generally unfriendly. The Pentagram and theto compare and contrast the two faiths, and try to facilitateis seen as conferingcare about consistency with recorded material. They

Here's a kids prayer for Samhain. It came off the patti Witington site. Doesn't say who wrote it.
Kids Prayer for Samhain
Samhain is here, cold is the earth,
as we celebrate the cycle of death and rebirth.
Tonight we speak to those through the veil,
the lines between worlds are thin and frail.
Ghosts and spirits in the night,
magical beings rising in flight,
owls hooting up in a moonlit tree,
I don't fear you and you don't fear me.
As the sun goes down, far to the west,
my ancestors watch over me as I rest.
They keep me safe and without fear,
on the night of Samhain, the Witch's New Year

What I don't understand is why I'm still having these dreams about this person. They are usually non-sexual, but involve us being close friends, etc. I guess it's not that disturbing, but I wish them to stop. I have tried several methods to try and 'get past' this - journaling, and talk therapy.
I have had recurring dreams about high school often. The way I interpreted my dreams was that this was one of the happiest times of my life, and people and places associated with that time figured in prominently. I often dream about a boy I dated named Ricky Luce who was killed in the Vietnam war. I believe he represents hopes and dreams that never materialized.
Dreams are as individual as the dreamer, and can represent daily occurrences that we work out in our dreams with the use of symbolism.

I'm a collector. Some decks I read from, some I bought because of the
artwork, some read only for certain circumstances and people, and some are
private decks for family or for myself. My favorite is an Anime deck; it
came from Thailand, without a book of instructions, but the pictures in the
cards spoke so strongly of family members and events in the family that I
had to have them. The one I use for public readings (friends, paid
readings, strangers) is the Hudes. It has realistic but medieval art style
and resembles the Rider-Waite (which will not, under any circumstances, read
for me; the deck either goes walkabout or burns me or refuses to do
anything). I've found that my taste and resonance to tarot decks changed as
I got older. For a long time I used a fantasy deck called Tarot of a Moon
Garden but it just didn't fit any more; I retired it. One of my early
favorites is an old over sized set simply called the Herbal. It doesn't
differ much from the standard tarot except that it was also a practical
guide to recognizing and identifying various medicinals.
If you want to study the tarot closely, I would suggest taking a look at the
basic Rider-Waite and the books written about it. These were helpful:
Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite
Tarot Made Easy by Nancy Garen
There are others, but these are the best I've found for such studies. Get
to know the universal symbols which are included in nearly all tarot decks,
regardless of variation, and their general meanings. Once you've done that,
if your specific tarot has an interpretation book, read that (both the long
book and the short booklet which comes with them if you have them). After
that, it's a matter of handling the cards, getting a 'feel' for how they
speak to you regarding specific meanings. This is useful for reading for
yourself but may cloud matters if you plan on reading for others.
Learn to read and interpret basic body language: brief expressions,
gestures, the way the eyes look, the tone of the voice, the colors the
person chooses to wear --- anything which will lend you insight into the
person's question. Much of reading accurately is more about reading the
human in front of you and applying it to the cards and their question than
it is about the cards themselves.
Practice makes perfect. Try different readings for different reasons,
different layouts, different card sets.
The basic symbology is universal; how it's interpreted according to the
situation varies.
And yes, some use coins and some use pentacles. I've also seen variants for
the sword, the wand, and the cup as well. In each case, however, the basic
symbolic meaning of the suit will remain the same. Some cards include a page
as well; some do not. I like the widest possible interpretation
opportunities so I tend to read with decks that have the extra cards.

Re: protection question

If they're not witches or pagans, don't worry about it. You control how
much they will influence you by your reactions and whether or not you allow
yourself to react to their actions against you. If you're worried about the
negativity sticking to you, carrying a small reflective mirror like the one
found in a compact will cancel it. Simply address the mirror and direct it
to send any negative energies back to their originator.
BE CAREFUL! If you're fostering negativity yourself, any sort of protection
like that will impact you as well. Your first actions ought to be mundane:
decide whether or not you want to cut ties and then take measures to do so
if you do. Think carefully about whether or not you had any part in
perpetrating the circumstances which led to the breech and, if so, whether
or not you can mend them. Like it or not, fights are a multi-way street and
the participants are rarely blameless.
If cutting them out of your life too is the only way to deal with it, allow
yourself time to heal. Allow yourself to grief for the loss, to be angry,
and to accept it. Whatever the temptation, don't say anything bad about
them. If others ask, simply tell them you couldn't reach an agreement and
decided to part ways or that you had a difference of opinion which could not
be reconciled and have decided to be apart.
Also, remember that not everything is to a purpose or magically oriented.
Sometimes bad things just happen. Allowing yourself to think someone is
acting against you may well bring that into reality.
I would also practice shielding, grounding, and centering. A good personal
shield will block anything aimed at you which you do not want. Walk and
move with confidence in your purpose and your decisions. That alone is
enough to make most people leave you alone. Witch wars and intentional
negativity are actually fairly rare.
