Sorry Grambadger, what did we say about elections in this post? We're
talking about how Christian language perpetuates sexual abuse and male
domination and about the liberating ministers out there trying to break
with the dinosaur thinking of male dogma.

And I wonder - were you for the vaginal probes in women's vagina's?

DailyOM: Sharing Grief

DailyOM - Opening to Receive Comfort
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

February 28, 2012
Sharing Grief
Opening to Receive Comfort
Grief is part of the human experience, and sharing our vulnerability helps create truly close bonds.

When we experience something that causes us to feel shock and sadness, we may feel the urge to withdraw from life. It may seem like remaining withdrawn will keep us protected from the world, but during these times it is important to reach out to those trusted and precious people who care about us the most. Even with our best information and reasoning, we never know when someone else’s experience or perspective can give us additional information that we need. The universe speaks to us through many channels, and when we open ourselves up to receive its messages, we also receive nurturing care from a loving partner in life’s journey.

Grief is part of the human experience, and sharing our vulnerability is what creates truly close bonds in our relationships. Opening ourselves up in this way gets to the core of our being, past all of our defenses and prejudices. When life seems to crack the outer shell of our world, we are both raw and fresh at the same time. It is then that we discover who is truly willing to walk with us through life. We also see that some of those sent to us may not be the ones we expected to see. Regardless, we learn to trust in the universe, in others, in our own strength and resilience, and in the wisdom of life itself.

Sharing grief allows us to ease our burden by letting someone else help carry it. This helps us process our own inner thoughts and feelings through the filter of a trusted and beloved someone. We may feel guilty or selfish, as if we are unloading on someone who has their own challenges. Although, if we think about it, we know we would do the same for them, and their protests would seem pointless. Remember that not sharing feelings with others denies them the opportunity to feel. We may be the messenger sent by the universe for their benefit, and it is on this mission that we have been sent. By sharing our hopes and fears, joys and pains with another person, we accept the universe’s gifts of wisdom and loving care.

Christopher Penczak's newest book, The Gates of Witchcraft: Twelve Paths of Power, Trance, and Gnosis is here!  $21.99

Many roads, one destination: that alternate state of consciousness associated with magick and witchcraft.  In The Gates of Witchcraft, award-winning author Christopher Penczak looks at twelve different "gateways" of trance and gnosis, twelve different paths for changing our consciousness to go deeper and get more in touch with the magick within.

From meditation and breath-work to
dance and music, sacred space and sacred vestments, to the Lonely Road of isolation or the Path of Poison working with herbal allies, The Gates of Witchcraft presents theory, practices, exercises, and rituals for exploring the different paths to power in the Craft.  Learn the various aids to help you along the path and take heed of their dangers and shadow-sides.

Whether you are an experienced practitioner or a novice finding your way, you will find something to help you along.  Step onto the path and open ... The Gates of Witchcraft!

Finding the Right Words
If you're not sure how to find the right words for spells that you make up yourself, consider borrowing lines that have already been written, and modifying them.  For example, instead of "Rain, rain, go away!  Come again some other day,"  you could say, "Measles, measles, go away, bother me no other day."

You can also borrow familiar forms of speech, like the call-and-response technique you may have heard in other situations.  "Is everybody happy?" goes the call, and "Yes!" goes the response.  This may be repeated more than once.  So, for example, you may say "Am I going to get this job?" and then answer "Yes!" more enthusiastically each of the three times you say it.

Fw: About Paganism / Wiccan: PantheaCon and Gender Controversy

Paganism / Wiccan Basics Celebrations Pagan Living

From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wiccan
This week, we're looking at a pretty big issue within the Pagan community - the notion of exclusion at public rituals. Following last week's controversy at PantheaCon, it's important to discuss not just the notions of gender disparity, but of the responsibilities that event coordinators should take to ensure that everyone is treated fairly. We're also discussing Mardis Gras and fun stuff to do in New Orleans, suggestions for healing magic, and egg folklore and superstitions - after all, Ostara is just a month away!

Follow Pagan/Wiccan on Twitter or Join Me On Facebook.

PantheaCon and Gender Controversy

If you've been reading any Pagan blogs over the last couple of days, you've probably heard by now about the controversy brewing at this year's PantheaCon regarding gender and exclusion. In a nutshell, a ritual led by Z Budapest was billed as being open to "genetic women" only. This doesn't sit well with a lot of folks, because it deliberately excludes transwomen. Not only that, after last year's flap over the same thing, there had been a sense of hope that the issue might be resolved for the 2012 event. Apparently, that wasn't the case. Read Full Article

Celebrating Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is certainly not a Pagan holiday, but it's happening right now, and I know several of our readers are in New Orleans for the festivities. I asked a few Pagan friends who live in the NOLA area for their tips on things to see and do -- you know, when you're not flashing your boobs in exchange for beads -- and believe it or not, there are a lot of fun witchy things to do there (as well as things that aren't necessarily witchy, but cool for Pagans anyway). Read Full Article

Healing Ritual Ideas

Reader Ed McMuffin writes, "A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with a pretty major illness. She's in treatment, and I'm sure she'll be fine, but I'd like to do some sort of healing ritual for her. She's given me blanket permission to go ahead, but I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions?" Read Full Article

Egg Magic and Folklore

In many cultures and society, the egg is considered the perfect magical symbol. It is, after all, representative of new life - in fact, it is the life cycle personified. While many of us take note of eggs around springtime - the Ostara season is chock full of them - it's important to consider that eggs feature prominently in folklore and legend all year long. February 29 - Leap Day
St David’s Day
March, various, fierce, and wild, with wind-crack’d cheeks
By wilder Welchman led, and crown’d with leeks!
Churchill, “Gotham” iii 101

St David was an abbot and a bishop of the sixth century who established a monastery at Pembrokeshire in Wales, and is considered the patron saint of Wales.

To show your Welsh allegiance, wear a daffodil. To become a honorary Welshman, eat a leek. Some say eating a leek celebrates a great Welsh victory over the Saxons, others say it is the plant of Wales because it is green and white, the colors of the Welsh flag. There’s also a tradition that eating leeks in March is good medicine.

Eat leeks in March and ramsons [wild garlic] in May
And all the year after the physicians may play
Upon St David’s Day
Put oats and barley in the clay

Blackburn, Bonnie and Leofranc Holford-Strevens, Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford University Press 1999
Kightly, Charles, The Perpetual Almanack of Folklore, Thames & Hudson 1987

Matronalia - On this day Roman women went to her temple on the Equiline Hill to pay their respects to Juno Lucina, who was pictured veiled, holding a flower in one hand and an infant in the other. Men gave presents to their wives. Just as Saturnalia reversed the male social order, Matronalia reversed the female social order and women waited on their female servants.

The Romans made a cake out of very fine white flour (similla) and decorated it with 12 balls of marzipan around the edges. A similar sort of cake, simnel cakes, are associated with Mothering Sunday (Mar 10 this year), possibly a remnant of this ancient festival, and with the Festival of Cronus (see Mar 28).

The Sharp Days - This was considered the first day of the year in Venice and in Russia until the fourteenth century. It was the beginning of the first month of the Ottoman financial year.

The Greeks say that good weather begins on March 1st. Supposedly, a thread left out overnight on a rosebush, then tied around the wrist or big toe will protect the wearer and is worn until Easter Day. St John Chrysostom complained of this custom (see March 22) and that of tying bells on children to protect them.

In the Dodecanese and elsewhere, children go around with the effigy of a swallow singing a song in honor of the bird and the fine weather it brings and asking for food offerings. This custom derives from ancient Rhodes.

The first three days of March are called Sharp Days: One should not wash clothes (for they will wear out), chop wood (or it will rot) or bathe (for one's hair will fall out).

Today's Goddess: BONA DEA Matronella (Rome)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:29 pm (PST)

Today's Goddess: BONA DEA
Matronella (Rome)

Themes: Femininity; Blessing; Fertility; Divination; Abundance
Symbols: Vines; Wine

About Bona Dea:Bona Dea's name literally means "good goddess." Her energies come into our
lives at the outset of this month, offering all good things, especially
fertility and a greater appreciation of the goddess within each of us.

Traditionally, Bona Dea is a women's Goddess who received offerings of wine in exchange for
prophetic insights during her observances.

To Do Today: On March 1, February was escorted out of Rome with a flourish of
adaptable activities. Exchange sweet gifts as the Romans did to ensure
yourself of a sweeter future. Greet a friend with Bona Dea's name to
invoke her blessings on them. Put up a grapevine wreath fashioned like a heart (or other symbol of something you need), and leave a glass of
wine on your altar to honor Bona Dea's presence in your home and your
life.

In Rome, female slaves
would get this day off, and the head of the house would wait on them. In modern times this equates to switching roles for a day at home. Whoever normally gets up and fixes breakfast gets to sleep in, whoever normally does chores gets to go out and socialize, and so forth. Bona Dea
appreciates the considerate gesture as much as you do and will rain her
goodness upon your home.

Ovid, Fasti

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Feb 28, 2012 8:33 pm (PST)

This is the day when dawn
receives our saffron cakes
in her sacred temple.
This is the day which honors
the bond between sisters
and the freedom of all women.
There is no slavery today at the threshold
of the temple. Today all women
are joined in the joys of motherhood:
for we hold up, not our own, but
our sister's children tothe sun.
~Ovid, Fasti

Today is
the day that, in ancient Rome, was known as the Matronalia, the great
spring feast of motherhood. On this day women attended rituals at the
shrines of Mater Matuta, The Dawn Goddess, whom they greeted by holding
up their small nieces and nephews to the rising sun. This is  beautiful
image of the joining of all the bonds between sisters into the circle of family, for women thus shared in the fruitfulness of their sisters'
lives and symbolically took responsibility for all the children of the
community.
Community
does not bond us now as tightly as in ancient times. There is freedom in contemporary life, a freedom that few experienced in earlier times. But the price of that freedom is the loneliness that comes from being
severed from connections with, and responsibility for, others. As spring moves forward, remember the joyous festivals of old, and reach out to
friends and family to reaffirm the bonds of human love.

Spell for Wisdom

Spell for Wisdom

Color:  Black
Incense of the day:  Basil

Sometimes, we all wish we knew "what's going on" in our professional or personal lives. We get anxious and often overreact in situations. We'd like a mentor in our lives who could guide us in making good, sound decisions. What we often overlook is the fact that we DO have examples in our lives who seem to be able to navigate stormy times with grace and aplomb.

A simple spell to invoke the wisdom you have seen in others is to picture that
person sitting across from you and handing you a scroll that gives a "recipe" for strength, courage, and understanding. This is when those old photos of ancestors come in quite handy for focusing on attributes that come with your bloodlines. Using the image of that person, simply say:

Please show me the wisdom you've learned through the years...
Help me to face my challenge and fears.
