Interfaith Dialogue

I think, regarding Paganism and Interfaith Dialogue, that at least it is
good for Paganism to have a "place at the table" - when we can get one. This
places us (yes, generalising umbrella term 'Paganism' as 'us') in the
presence of other religions and also may challenge the dogmatic nature of
some other religions - just because we're different from them. I'm not sure
how sophisticated interfaith dialogue conversations actually get, or what
goes on in such dialogues - not having attended the Parliament of the
World's Religions in Melbourne a few years back, or any other Interfaith
meeting, I do know that at the Melbourne event there was a lot of chummying
up of Pagan spokespeople with Indigenous Religions - a topic now
problematised at the American Academy of Religion (Is 'Paganism(s)'
"indigenous"?). American Pagans have been going to the Parliament for years
now, in fact when I was in the USA in November, people kept asking me why I
didn't go to the Melbourne one. I just had to say that while I was initially
interested in the idea... I actually just lost interest in it. I gathered
that they thought that was highly weird.

Greetings Caroline

I will say straight up that I have not been directly involved with any interfaith dialogue, but I can see your point about the value of establishing "a place at the table" for paganism - if this helps to achieve a greater acceptance of and respect for paganism in the broader community then all well and good.

But it makes me wonder... what are the goals of the interfaith dialogue? Is it simply to promote a greater acceptance of diversity in beliefs, or maybe there is some genuine exchange of ideas and practices? To me, a great beauty of witchcraft and pagan practice as I have experienced it, is that it is eclectic in nature, and so is open to broader perspectives - and this is a great strength I believe. However, my experience has also been that some of the other faiths represented are not as flexible in their outlook i.e. they want <I use that term loosely, 'demand' might be a better term in some cases> people to see things their way, but are not so receptive the other way around. After all, how could they call themselves good ... or ... if it were not that way?

So I suppose I have mixed thoughts about the interfaith dialogue and its benefits - I suppose one day I should actually attend one of the forums to see what it's all about. :)

Many thanks for raising the topic.

Cheers & BB, Graham.

Greetings.

You touch on the crux of the issue with this post. Yep a few Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Pagans etc etc, who are actually fair minded individuals and who have a genuine desire to establish some sort of dialogue between religions with a view to reducing the hate and bigotry that exists. Of course there are the usual busy bodies whose only purpose is to puff up their already over inflated sense of self importance, but they will be present in pretty much any gathering of humans. Sadly though, even those whose motivation is of the best kind are wasting their efforts because of the very mindsets you quote in your post.. and which.. unfortunately...are pretty well entrenched in the core of so many religions. And let's not get all holier than thou regarding "Pagans" either.. nothing more bigoted than your hairy-arsed enviro-nazi sanctimonious ..I'm here to enlighten the masses and save the planet, whale, rainforest or whatever Pagan.

Bill.

I seriously find no reason really for this board because to be honest the Christian want everyone to be christian the Muslims want everyone to be Muslim where is the equality? I mean the Christian bible basically states that we are sinners and should be begging for forgiveness. Sorry I usually am not one to point fingers but I walk down the street and there are people saying "shame on you" I go to uni and there are people telling me my father will burn in hell. I walk down the mall and there are two men quoting the bible.
