As we know the goal is to live our lives magically in the moment every day in the now and while it would be nice to go and buy all the cool witchy stuff that is out there...their is so much in every day objects that we can use around the home.
So here is what I suggest...Post up an every day object once a week and let the creative juices flow and post up what we would or could possibly use it for magically.
I thought it would be kinda cool and inspiring...whatcha think..

BOOK REVIEW - Circle of Fire

Posted by: "gleason.mike@comcast.net" gleason.mike@comcast.net   gleasonm01915

Thu Dec 29, 2011 10:55 am (PST)

Circle of Fire A practical guide to the symbolism & practices of modern Wicca ritual by Sorita d'Este and David Rankine © 2011 Avalonia Books ISBN: 978-1905297160 168 Pages

Paperback $13.25 (U.S.) www.avaloniabooks.co.uk

As a rather prolific reviewer I often find myself receiving books which fall into one of two categories – books whose authors I completely agree with/understand or books whose authors I almost completely disagree with. Of late, I have been reading and reviewing books by authors who fall into the first category and, in fairness, I feel compelled to explain why this is.

This is the third book in a row I have read by the same authors. Sorita d'Este and David Rankine come from a background which is very similar to my own. They are part of the initiatory branch of Wicca; came into it at a time when the currently perceived divide between "Wicca" and "Witchcraft" did not exist; and feel that while self-dedication is certainly possible, self-initiation is not.

Although some readers may see this as a "101" (basic) book, which it is in some ways, it actually rises to the level of an intermediate book in that it goes into more depth of explanation. It is easy enough to find books which can lay the basic foundation for Wiccan practice. Finding explanations which move beyond the "this is the way it has always been done" or "this is the way I was taught" is more problematic. Sorita and David give their reasoning for doing things their way AT LEAST TO START, while encouraging further explorations as you gain experience and can make effective judgments about what you encounter and feel.

One thing I really liked in this book was that as well as describing various gestures and figures, illustrations and photographs were provided so there is no room for questions or misunderstanding. There are numerous appendices covering a range of topics, but they are kept brief and interesting.

I recommend this book without reservations of any sort, for those walking a Wiccan path, at any level of training or experience.

BOOK REVIEW - The Spellcaster's Picture Book

The SpellCasters Picture Book: Visual Tools for grown-up Magic 2 nd Edition by Diana Rajchel © 2008, 2011 Kindle e-Book 48 pages $0.99 (U.S.)

This is a strange book...and considering some of the books I have seen over the years, that is saying something. It is extremely short, the title really tells you nothing about the contents, and the illustrations are...odd.

If you purchase a copy of this book you are encouraged to "Add your own pages – go nuts!" and "Please limit sharing of this work with others to two copies." which, in my opinion is both very generous as well as being realistic. Generous because the author is willing to sacrifice two potential sales for each sale she makes and realistic because she knows that people have a tendency to share something they enjoy.

It is a pleasure to read an author who states clearly and succinctly "No answers here." So, if you want answers, keep on looking. If you want to know about Wicca, Diana is NOT interested in answering your questions – there are abundant resources available online and in print to answer 99.9% of all the questions you have (that 0.1% is all stuff you have to personally experience, so she wouldn't be any help there anyhow). She makes no guarantee these spells will work, and she doesn't tell you what you need to do to follow up with them...the only person that can answers questions like that is YOU. You know what feels right, you know what works for you. She also reminds you that spells work in their own time-frame. If you expect immediate results, buy a digital camera. Otherwise, learn to be patient and let the spells do their thing.

The information contained within this short volume is accompanied by colorful(!!!!!) illustrations. They look like they were drawn by children which, in essence is true. If you allow your inner child to come through when you need inspiration, you will inevitably find yourself responding on a visceral level, which is where the most effective magic occurs.

I'm not 100% sure what to make of this book. In some ways, I am far too cerebral to tackle this book. I tend to over-think and over-analyze things. I made a conscious effort to subdue those aspects of myself while reading this book, however, and found myself enjoying it.

I cannot point to any particular item or point and say "That was right on the mark." Instead, I simply have to say that it was fun to read this book. I know I didn't find any answers, but I wasn't looking for any. I didn't find myself suddenly realizing, "Oh, I should have been doing this, instead of that, all these year." Still, when I came to the end of the book, I had a feeling of satisfaction.

So, given the inexpensive price of the download, and the small size of the book, I have to say that it one which I would recommend for almost everyone. I might not give it to very young individuals, and there may be those out there who are even more hide-bound than I am who wouldn't be able to subdue the overly analytical aspects of their own personalities for whom it might not be appropriate, but almost everyone else could benefit from at least a passing acquaintance with this book.

BOOK REVIEW - In the Bleak Midwinter (Novel)

Posted by: "gleason.mike@comcast.net" gleason.mike@comcast.net   gleasonm01915

In the Bleak Midwinter by M.R. Sellars © 2011 WillowTree Press ISBN: 978-0-9794533-8-0

300 pages Paperback $16.95 Advanced Readers Copy

I have been a fan of M.R. Sellars' writing since I read the first Rowan Gant Investigation a number of years ago. Over that time those of us who have followed Rowan's adventures have gotten to know Rowan and his fiery red-haired wife (Felicity) in depth. We have also come to have a better understanding of Ben Storm, friend and contact with the St. Louis Police Department. Lately we have begun to know Constance Mandaly (FBI agent and Ben's on-again/off-again lover) in more detail. This is her first full-length, stand-alone excursion. The basis of the story has already been told (in "Merrie Axemas" - last year's e-novella from WillowTree Press). In fact, this book is a fleshing out of that particular offering, with some additions, a few subtractions, and a whole lot more story to be told.

I have missed Sellars' style and ability to take subjects which should be totally unbelievable and make them come out as at least plausible. My only fear, at this point, is that with so many interesting characters to choose from (Rowan, Felicity, and Constance) the temptation may arise to divert more of his energy into stand-alone stories with less of the "team" stories. There has already been a sub-plot of stories which focused on Felicity as the central character and, although it was carried off well in a predetermined short arc of stories, I would hate to see Sellars get diverted from telling us about Rowan's experiences. I've seen other authors try to produce concurrent series and it has seldom worked out for the best.

A lot of the questions raised in "Merrie Axemas" are addressed and answered in this book. Some of the answers are pretty unbelievable if you have never dealt with the sorts of things Constance has encountered in her experiences with Ben, Rowan and Felicity. And that even applies to Constance herself. She has trouble accepting some of what happens. To her credit, however, no matter how impossible things seem, she is willing to trust what she experiences.

It seemed somehow fitting that I got around to tackling this book as the Christmas holiday barreled towards us. Honestly, I had hoped to get to it earlier, but I received a large quantity of books at about the same time, and I decided to save this until after I had worked my way through several more "serious" books, as a kind of holiday treat. I'm glad I did.

If you have read any (or all) of the Rowan Gant Investigation books, you will want this book. If you read the e-novella last year, you need to get this book. If neither of the above apply, but you enjoy a good mystery with some supernatural overtones, pick up a copy of this book (or check out the publisher's website for information regarding the availability of this and other ebooks).

BOOK REVIEW - Hallowed  (Novel)

Posted by: "gleason.mike@comcast.net" gleason.mike@comcast.net   gleasonm01915

Thu Dec 29, 2011 10:59 am (PST)

Hallowed by Cynthia Hand © 2012 Harper Collins Children's Books ISBN: 978-0-06-199618-4 416 pages Paperback $17.99 (U.S.) [Tentative] Also available as an ebook www.epicreads.com

As an Advance Reading Copy there are several things which are no set in stone yet, such as actual page count, price, etc. Its intended publication date is January 24, 2012, so start looking for it at that point.

With all the current interest in vampires and werewolves in America today ("True Blood", "Vampire Diaries", and the Twilight Saga), I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a book about part-angels landed in my mailbox. I honestly don't remember if I requested this book or if it was just one of those which periodically show up unexpectedly.

Granted that I have read a lot of novels with a supernatural theme to them. Also granted that it is often necessary to make major adjustments to your point-of-view before you can accept an alternate view of reality. The amazing thing, to me, was that I found myself slipping quite easily into a mind-set where this story not only was entertaining, but even seemed plausible (if highly unlikely)

I obviously missed the first book in this series, but I had no trouble coming up to speed. Part of that may have been that this series is aimed at the teen/high school market, and thus the plot-lines are not as complex as some of the other series I have read. That is not, however, meant to imply that it is overly simplistic. This book has no difficulty capturing teen angst and turmoil accurately.

It is obvious from the development of the story, and the characters, that this will not be the final installment in this series. Although certain developments can be anticipated, Ms Hand is quite capable of tossing in a few unexpected twists and turns – the death of the mother of one of the central characters, the reappearance of her father and his semi-revealed nature (is he indeed who he appears to be?) were all unexpected.

Overall, this is an enjoyable book. I doubt that it will inspire a movies series, but that is not the defining act for a well-written novel.

BOOK REVIEW - The Witches' Almanac 2012 - 2013

Posted by: "gleason.mike@comcast.net" gleason.mike@comcast.net   gleasonm01915

Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:01 am (PST)

The Witches Almanac Spring 2012 to Spring 2013 © 2011 The Witches Almanac, Ltd. ISBN: 978-0-9824323-6-5 152 pages Paperback $11.95 (U.S.)

Every year, when this almanac lands in my mail box, I am assured that I will find out things I never knew and that I will have at least some of my preconceptions challenged. There is a consistency to this annual offering – every year is an eye-opening experience

This year's offering includes a look at the locavore phenomenon, traces of Paganism in a "Maine"-stream almanac, as well as a look at the Museum of Witchcraft. And that's just within the first 35 pages.

There is much more on tap in the way of informative articles as well as the weather forecasts which, while not necessarily as reliable as The Old Farmer's Almanac , are a good basic guide to what to expect during the upcoming year.

Perhaps the "quirkiest" part of this annual event is the cryptic notes which appear, along with birthdates, celebrations, and moon phases, on the zodiacal calendar pages. They offer suggestions and insight, although what their sources are is anybody's guess. What does "Aliens inquire" (September 25 th ) mean? How about "Beware the Vampyre" on December 10 th ? Feel free to guess, I know I do every time I read one.

I won't offer a rave review, it isn't necessary. I would recommend picking up a copy of this almanac every year simply because it is one of the most entertaining ones on the market. I have copies of most of them (all of the current ones from 1993-94, and most of them published in the 1970s) and frequently return to them for inspiration. They have changed over the years, but the quality has done nothing but increase. They have even added extra information on their website to entice you further.

It is, without a doubt, one of my standard yearly requirements, and I suggest that you ad it to your short list of annual purchases.
