DailyOM - Promises
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:
December 14, 2011
As Good as Your Word
Promises
We forget how powerful our words are and when make promises it is up to us to make sure we keep our words sacred.
Ever since human beings could speak to one another, they have been making promises and keeping them or not keeping them. Those who keep their promises are regarded as people of integrity, while those who don't keep their promises are regarded as people who at best can't be taken seriously and at worst can't be trusted. Sometimes we forget how powerful our words are, and we use them haphazardly or unconsciously, creating expectations that are never fulfilled, leaving disappointment and distrust in our wake.
On an even deeper level, there are promises we may have made to ourselves that we don't remember because they have slipped into our unconscious. An early heartache may have been followed by a promise never to trust love again. Without realizing it, we may be fulfilling that promise and wondering why our love life looks so grim. At an even deeper level, many people who recall past lives become aware that they made a promise lifetimes ago that they are still keeping. For example, a vow of poverty taken in a lifetime as a monk may be holding someone back from fulfilling his earning potential now. Upon realizing that we have made a promise we no longer wish to be beholden to, we can perform a ritual of requesting release from that bond. In doing so, we clear ourselves of outmoded connections and patterns, returning ourselves to a clean slate. Then we can resolve to remember that our word is sacred and to be very conscious of any promises we make to
ourselves or to others.
We may ask to be released from any promises made to ourselves or others in our present, past, or future lives, consciously or unconsciously, that are holding us back from fulfilling our greatest good. We may ask that love, light, and healing be sent to any souls who have suffered from our inability to be true to our word, including ourselves. We can ask for the wisdom to do our best and from this point forward to be true to our word, promising only what we truly intend to deliver. The resulting clear conscience and liberated energy will illustrate this truth: We are only as good as our word.

The Winter Solstice
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:03 pm (PST)
The Winter Solstice
The Winter Solstice is the
longest night of the year. The Sun has reached its weakest point, but on this night it will be reborn and begin its growth to the long days of
summer. All the holidays of December are connected to this event. The
Celts call this day Alban Arthuan. The name Yule is Germanic. At this
time of the year many people become depressed. Often this is blamed on
the fact that the celebrations fail to meet their expectations. But
people have always become depressed at this time of the year because of
the lack of sunlight and the seeming death of all of nature. To ancient
peoples this fear was personified as an attack of elves and ghostly
spirits, similar to the beliefs surrounding Halloween. This is obvious
when one studies the customs of the Shetland and Orkney Islands in the
far north of Scotland. This was one of the last places in Europe to
become Christian, therefore their customs are closer to the ancient
past. Here, this holiday was called Yule into the twentieth century. On
the actual solstice, these islands see only six hours of daylight. Their Yule lasts from December 20 to January 13.
During this period, defense from the spirits of the dead becomes paramount. The house and barn are
decorated with amulets in the form of straw crosses. Sheaves of corn are placed on the roof; round cakes are baked with the solar cross
inscribed on them, and plenty of ale is brewed. Drinking ale is so
important that there is a fine for anyone who abstains. During this
period all work except the most necessary stops, and the nights are
spent singing and dancing. In this way, the danger and the depression
are staved off by joy. We often hear that we decorate our homes with
evergreens because they are a symbol of life everlasting in this season
of frost. This is true, but holly is also an amulet that captures evil
on its barbs before it can enter the house. In the West, one must
realize that it is natural to become depressed at this time of year.
Just accept it, and make use of the ancient amulets and rituals designed to help bring back the Sun.

Goddess Of The Day: FAUNA Faunalia (Rome)
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:14 pm (PST)
Goddess Of The Day: FAUNA
Faunalia (Rome)
Themes: Fertility; Nature; Divination
Symbols: All Forest Items.
About Fauna: In Roman mythology, Fauna is the consort to Faunus, whom this date venerates.
With Faunus, she protects the woodlands and plants that live there. While her role in stories seems
minor, Fauna's power lives on in botanical terminology, her name having been given to vegetation.
To Do Today: Faunus was a woodland god like Pan, who sends messages through the forests for those who
know nature's omens and signs. If at all possible, go to a natural location today (even a park or a quiet tree
in your neighborhood will do) with a small libation of wine or milk, both of which are customary. Pour this on
the ground, focusing your intention to learn more about nature's messages to us. Then spend at least twenty
minutes observing. Take notes as you do. Do the tree's leaves seem to talk? Do they move in a specific way?
Are birds taking flight? Where do they go? Do they drop any feathers on the ground? Do any animals appear
unexpectedly? If so, what does the creature do, and where does it go? All of these things, and other similar
experiences, can carry a sign meant to help you today or in the days ahead. To interpret what you see, consult
any good folklore or superstition collection, like the Victorian Grimore, or another book, Futuretelling, which
discusses natural harbingers.

Spell for Depression
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411

Spell for Depression
Depression is spiritual enemy number one. It provides a doorway into our psyches for a whole host of ghoulies.
To nip it in the bud, take an uplifting essence such as lavender, orange, or
rose, and evaporate it in your favorite room. Sitting in a relaxed position, hold a rose quartz,
and visualize pink energy seeping from it into your body. As the scent surrounds you, so too
does the soothing pink. As the color and aroma increase, your mood will lift up. This trick works
especially well when accompanied by upbeat music. Melodies are good depression-quellers.
Rhythm and dance help uplift the body and spirit.

Babylonian Hymn

Shining queen of hell.
Erishkigal, you give us
the best praise there is.
The shining queen has hair
like leeks, gives birth without ceasing,
crying out, "ow! ow! ow! ow!"
The shining queen of heaven
gives the best praise, crying out
as she gives birth without ceasing.
~Babylonian Hymn
Birth is not painless, whether it is a physical birth, an emotional one, or a spiritual one. But
it is not exactly painful either. Any creative process takes intense concentration and furious
labor. It strains us to our very core. But is that pain? Many birthing mothers experience
something like ecstasy as they give birth. So do many artists as they create new work. So do
those undergoing an important inner transformation.
The birthing mother, the artist, the transforming psyche, call "ow!, ow!" as the process unfolds.
But there is exhilaration in that sound, as much as there is complaint. If the literal and metaphoric
pangs of birth were more painful than the rewards of a child - or artwork or inner change -
are attractive, the human race would have died out long ago. But mothers go on having children,
artists go on creating art, we all go on enduring inner pain in order to transform ourselves into
something greater. The rewards outweigh the pain - and the pain can sometimes be inexpressibly hard.
