DailyOM: Rhythmic Rest

DailyOM - Natural Cycles Of Sleep
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

December 12, 2011
Rhythmic Rest
Natural Cycles Of Sleep
Our bodies are naturally encoded to respond to light and dark and sleeping with the rhythms of Mother Nature.

The human body evolved to fall asleep soon after the descent of night's curtain and to wake with the appearance of the dawn. Sleep cycles were governed by patterns of light and darkness for thousands of years, meaning that for much of history, humanity has enjoyed nine of more hours of sleep each night. Our bodies are naturally encoded to respond to light and dark and sleeping with the rhythms of Mother Nature. In the present, artificial light has changed the way we schedule our day-to-day lives, and most of us slumber for less than seven hours at a stretch. It is possible, however, to come back to natural sleeping cycles by making a few small changes. When our bodies and minds are attuned to the world's natural rhythms, we feel calmer, more centered, and more energetic while awake. Sleep is more satisfying because we afford ourselves more than enough time for restoration and rejuvenation.

Our reliance on indoor lighting further compounds our disassociation from the natural cycles of light and darkness that would otherwise preside over our sleep. You can mimic the passage of the day by changing the quality of the light. Sleeping without heavy drapery or shades is best so you can wake up with the sun. If sleeping by a window without a curtain is not an option, a dawn simulator lamp imitates the sun by growing steadily brighter with the coming of the height of morning.

You will likely discover that changing your sleep patterns to be in sync with the daily cycle of light and darkness is easy and that you feel more alive when your sleeping and waking rhythms are in alignment to those of the earth. Nature's own phases will be your guide to wellness, granting you more waking hours in the summertime when you will benefit greatly from spending time outside and ensuring you get plenty of sleep in the winter when you likely need it most.

Fw: Significant Sungrazing Comet + Geminid Meteor Shower

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Dec 13, 2011 3:40 am (PST)

Space Weather News for Dec. 13, 2011
http://spaceweather.com

GEMINID METEOR SHOWER:  Earth is passing through a stream of debris from near-Earth asteroid 3200 Phaethon, source of the annual Geminid meteor shower.  Forecasters expect meteor rates to reach 20-to-40 per hour when the shower peaks in bright moonlight on the night of Dec.13/14.  The best time to look, no matter where you live, is between 10 pm local time on Tuesday, Dec. 13, and sunrise on Wednesday, Dec. 14th. Check http://spaceweather.com for more information and live audio from a meteor radar.

BIG SUNDIVING COMET: A comet nearly as wide as two football fields (200m) is plunging toward the sun where it will most likely be destroyed in a spectacular light show on Dec. 15/16. Solar glare will hide the event from human eyes, but NASA and ESA spacecraft should have a grand view.  Check http://spaceweather.com for full coverage.

DailyOM: Constructive Connections

DailyOM - Sharing with Your Neighbors
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

December 13, 2011
Constructive Connections
Sharing with Your Neighbors
If you are craving community look to your own neighbors to forge new relationships and build something new together.

Many of our relationships can be fleeting or do not deepen past a superficial level, yet these connections, as trivial as they can seem, often have the potential to grow into something much more essential. When we crave community, we should focus our attention on these casual acquaintances. To forge a bond with neighbors, we need to work together with them so that we have a context from which to begin a more mature relationship. Sharing tasks that are part of living can be a wonderful way to become a part of a larger community, make new friends, and lighten the workloads of everyone involved.

Creating a network of neighbors who agree to pool certain resources and share daily duties can be as easy as taking the initiative. If you are willing to take the first step by reaching out to the individuals and families who share your building or your street, you will likely find that others are receptive to the notion. Starting small, with just a few people, can help you orchestrate a smoothly running system. Together, you will need to decide what chores you want to do communally and what resources can be shared. Ideas for community sharing are child care, errands, housework, keeping a joint garden, cooking for the group, and carpooling. For instance, if you cook large meals for four neighbors once a week, you take off four nights after that. As you grow to trust one another, you can begin adding new members to your evolving network or introducing new tasks to your shared roster of duties.

Actions speak louder than words, so working closely with neighbors to ensure the well-being of the group can be a wonderful way to build a sense of community in your locale. Not everyone you approach will be open to the idea of becoming a part of a network of sharing. As you connect with those who do appreciate the merits of such a system, you will discover that others are just as eager as you are to create interpersonal connections that are defined by substance.

Julia Watkin's amazing  energy artwork.
The latest in chakra balancing spiritual energy art and jewelry by Julia Watkins. She has pioneered perhaps the most innovative new form of art, Energism. Based on Tai Chi, these paintings & jewelry use large colorful swirls representing energy to demonstrate how man, animal and landscape are all interconnected through a natural flow we can sense, but not see.
Energist art is meditative. Its goal goes beyond simply creating a representation of spiritual energy. The artist seeks to draw the viewer in so he or she actually experiences the energy. The epitome of Energism Art would be a piece that when simply viewed would give the viewer a profound spiritual experience, a vision of pure energy, love and joy beyond expression.

Yuletide Greetings from Maggi Setti 2012 Meets for Mystic Spirit, Mo

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:39 pm (PST)

Yuletide Greetings!

I hope your year was productive and your harvest plentiful!  As the days get darker and colder we turn to our friends and family and celebrate all that we have and call back the sun that it may be reborn into a new year.  Though I am a Capricorn, I always look forward to the turning of the wheel as the year gears up after Imbolc and Ostara.  You plant bulbs in the fall after all!  That in mind, Order of the World Tree dedicated on the Full Moon closest to Samhain, the Celtic New Year.  Since then, we have been at the ever present task of solidifying the group, our personal practice, and magickal chops!  Our coven's tool, the Staff of the World Tree is being carved and forged as we speak and should be completed by the beginning of the summer.  We are excited to be an “official” part of the Pagan community and continue to offer local public events in the greater NYC metro and Northern NJ areas.

Personally I’ve had lots of opportunities already as well.  My first book, Ecstasy in Shadow, is now available for purchase.  It chronicles a 2 year underworld journey of transformation that hit me while Pluto transited my natal Sun.  I also included an essay on the synthesis of magick and ecstasy in the magickal and Pagan community.  You can find it at Bell Book and Candle in Dover DE, Mystic Spirit in Montclair NJ, and online at Amazon.com.  You can also order it directly from me if you wish, just email me for more info.

I had an article, “Yule vs. the Holiday Season,” reprinted by the Texan Wicca Spirit Network in their Yule Newsletter.  You can view it here:  http://www.wiccaspirit.net/vol5is10/

My Assembly of the Sacred Wheel coven, Order of the World Tree is open to new members.  If you find that you are interested in petitioning, please come to some of our exciting open events!  Meet us, and check out our website at http://owt.sacredwheel.org.  How to petition is elucidated online.

Paganism / Wiccan Basics Celebrations Pagan Living

From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wiccan
This week, we're looking at how public support for a Pagan student may help to increase awareness in a Georgia school district, a reader wants to know what qualifies a High Priestess to be a High Priestess, and there are some neat archaeological goodies, including a Neolithic statue and a Roman curse tablet. We're gearing up for Yule at About Pagan/Wiccan, so next Tuesday's edition will focus on all kinds of Solstice celebrations! Have a magical week, and don't forget you can Follow Pagan/Wiccan on Twitter or Join Me On Facebook.

Show of Support for Georgia Student

Remember a week or so ago, when we talked about 11-year-old Christopher Turner, a Pagan student who was harassed by his teacher and bus driver? Well, the outpouring of support in the Pagan community was pretty impressive - Christopher's mom stopped by the blog to thank everyone for their kind words, saying, "My son Christopher is astounded at the amount of people that are standing up with him to protect his rights." Now there's an update on just how far that show of support has spread, and the impact that it's had, thanks to social networking. A joint statement issued by ... Read Full Article

Roman Curse Tablet Now on Display at Museum

I love stuff like this - anyone who thinks our ancient ancestors didn't curse or hex their enemies should read this article. A number of lead curse tablets have been found during excavations of Roman settlements, and one was recently cleaned up and put on display at the Johns Hopkins Archaeology Museum. Early tablets were pretty simple, with inscriptions like "Go die, Tacitus!" or "May the penis of Marius shrivel and wither!" but some of the later ones became fairly complex. Read Full Article

Reader Mail: What Makes a HPS?

A reader writes in with a good question. She says, "I am a solitary and I'd like to start a coven of my own, because I'm tired of celebrating the Sabbats alone. I'm thinking I'd like to start it as a study group, then eventually turn it into a coven if all the members agree. I know I need to learn a lot more but I don't know exactly what credentials I'd need to become a priestess of a coven. What are some of the fundamentals a High Priestess should know?" Introduction to Wicca

Week 4: Basics of Magic
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
Magical practice is a significant part of many modern Pagan and Wiccan traditions. There are a lot of questions - some unanswerable - about what magic is and how it works. Let's look at some of those issues, and then we'll get into the nuts and bolts.
In addition to talking about how magic works - or doesn't - this week we're going to look at the basics of candle magic, crystals and gemstomes, herbs and incense, and more. Remember that Book of Shadows we started in last week's lesson? A lot of this information is worth keeping in there. Feel free to print things out and keep them in your BOS - after all, that's what it's for!
Let's start off with a couple of the most commonly asked questions about magic, and then we'll talk about poppets, candles, oils and herbs as well.
FAQ: Is Magic Real? And Why Doesn't Everyone Do It?

Depends on who you ask, but most Wiccans and Pagans will tell you they accept magic as part of their daily life. Most people don't practice magic at all -- why on earth not, if it's real? Some of the reasons might be simpler than you think.

FAQ: How Does Magic Work?

Let's face it - magic isn't something we can sit down and explain with a pie chart and a graph. It's not soemthing we can correlate with facts and figures. It's something that exists, but we can't prove how or why. In fact, there are even different TYPES of magic - all of which work within their own spheres of energy. Learn a little bit about different theories on the science of magic.

Poppet Magic

Poppets, or dolls, are one of the oldest and simplest forms of sympathetic magic. Based upon the theory that like attracts like, a poppet is a doll or figure created to represent the individual who is the focus of the working. A magical link is created to the person by way of the poppet, and actions performed on the poppet are received by the individual. Poppets don't have to be bad, though - there are many good and positive ways you can use one. Here you'll learn how to create your own, as well as some sample workings you can try.

Magical Herbalism

Herb use and lore has long been a staple of healing practices. Thousands of years before mankind even began writing things down, our ancestors knew that certain plants had specific effects upon the body and mind. Many Pagans and Wiccans continue to follow these traditions, and use herbs as part of their magical practice.

Candle Magic 101

Candle magic is one of the simplest forms of spell casting. Considered sympathetic magic, it's a method which doesn't require a lot of fancy ritual or expensive ceremonial artifacts. In other words, if you have access to a candle, you can do a magical working. By declaring your intent, visualizing the end result, and focusing your will into the candle, you can manifest results.

Magical Oils

Oils are often used in magical workings. They can be used to anoint an individual or item. Although many magical oils are commerically available, it's not hard to blend your own, once you learn a little about the basics. A magical oil is a great way to turn a simple mundane item into an item of magical power and energy.

Next Week: Deity and Prayer

Now that we've discussed the basics of Wicca, magical tools, and magic itself, next week we'll look at how the Divine impacts the practice of Wicca and Paganism. You'll meet some of the gods and goddesses honored by Wiccans and Pagans, learn about how to make an offering, the concept of appropriate worship, and some Pagan prayers for just about any occasion. See you then, and have a magical week!

Yule isn't just a time for stuffing yourself with food and burning a log. There's a lot more to it, and this time of year is full of rich tradition and legend. Today, we'll look at some of the folklore, customs and mythology that surrounds the winter holidays. We'll talk about the magic of mistletoe, the deities of midwinter, naked carolers, and even the fat guy in the red suit!
Mistletoe: Myths, Mysteries and Medicine

The first documented appearance of mistletoe goes back to Pliny the Elder, who wrote about Druids and their strange rituals involving the plant. From there, it's become known as a plant of both harm and healing, as well as being blamed for the Crucifixion of Jesus. Learn about mistletoe and its complex history, as well as why we hang it up and try to catch a kiss beneath! Read More

The Holly King vs. the Oak King

In many Wiccan traditions, Yule is the time of year when the Holly King and Oak King do battle. Find out what this has to do with the turning of the Wheel of the Year... Read More

The Origins of Santa Claus

Sure, Santa Claus is based upon an early Christian saint -- Nicholas, to be precise -- but did you know he was also influenced by a prominent tale in Norse mythology? Learn why Santa's reindeer fly in today's stories -- here's a hint: it has to do with a magical horse! Read More

Io, Saturnalia!

When it comes to festivals, parties, and downright debauchery, no one beats the folks of ancient Rome. Around the time of the winter solstice each year, they celebrated the festival of Saturnalia. This week-long party typically began around December 17th, so that it would end right around the day of the solstice... Read More

Hey, It's Hogmanay!

Hogmanay is the Scottish holiday that celebrates the new year. Observed on December 31, festivities typically spill over into the first couple of days of January. Learn about first-footing, why it's important to have a dark-haired person enter your home, burning a clavie, and great balls o' fire...Read More

The Legend of Mithras

Christianity hardly has a monopoly on the theme of resurrection, particularly around the winter holidays. A couple of thousand years ago, followers of a god named Mithras celebrated rebirth in much the same way as the followers of Jesus do today. Mithras was an early Roman god of the sun, who was born around the time of the winter solstice and then experienced a resurrection around the spring equinox... Read More

Today's Goddess: SAKWA MANA Soyal (Southwestern United States)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:09 pm (PST)

Today's Goddess:SAKWA MANA
Soyal (Southwestern United States)

Themes: Prayer; Communication; Cycles; Harvest; Health; Joy; Providence.
Symbols: The Color Blue; Corn; Prayer Sticks; Pine.

About Sakwa Mana: The Hopi Blue Corn Maiden, this goddess participates in the Soyal festival by carrying
a tray of blue corn and spruce bows, both of which represent the goddess's ongoing providence, no matter
the season.

To Do Today: The Hopi gather in kivas today to comfort and bring happiness to the old year so that the
new one will be filled with earth's and Sakwa Mana's bounty. Several customary activities today are fun
to try. First, offer the gift of a feather to a friend. This ensures then a new year filled with health and joy.
To invoke Sakwa Mana's blessing on the gift, pack it with a few pine needles. Over time, the feather will
absorb the goddess's aroma and disperse her power each time it is fanned at ritual.

Making a sun shield brings victory in your life over any darkness holding you back. To create a simple one,
cut out a round piece of paper and decorate it with your creative vision of the sun. Either keep this with you
or put it in a predominant spot in your home. When success comes, burn the paper with a thankful heart.
Finally, find a fallen pine twig outside and attach a small feather to it. This represents both the goddess
and your wish for a gentle voice in prayer.

Snowman Making Spell

Tue Dec 13, 2011 8:11 pm (PST)

Snowman Making Spell
Incense of the day: Evergreen

Making a snowman can be much more than just child’s play. The snowman can also be a guardian
and
protector for your household during this season of colds and flus. If
you have snow where you live, use it. If not, a small snowman made of
Styrofoam balls will be just as effective. Use bits of charcoal for
the
eyes, and old buttons for the nose and mouth. Be creative, and be sure
to give him personality as you sculpt the face. Add evergreen boughs for
the arms, and a small evergreen wreath for his hat. Wrap a scarf around
his neck, and enchant him by saying:

Man of snow,
While cold winds blow,
Protect our home from care and woe.
Health and comfort come to me,
And our home will blessed be.
