DailyOM: Two Sides of the Same Moon

DailyOM - Ritual Moon
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

December 15, 2011
Two Sides of the Same Moon
Ritual Moon
As our ancestors once did we can honor the cycles of the moon with rituals that help connect us to a more natural life.

The moon waxes and wanes in the night sky, always following the same cyclical pattern, lighting the darkness with its luminous glow. It has been this way as long as the earth has been here. The same moon grew from dark to full and back again, catching the eyes of our grandparents, our great grandparents, and those at the beginning of humanity. The moon guided our ancestors in the planting, sowing, and reaping of their crops, and we can be inspired to observe and honor these same cycles today with simple rituals that help connect us to the natural ebb and flow of life energy.

Dark moons and new moons represent polar moments of beginning and realization in the arc of the moon's phases. When the moon is dark, we might take time to meditate on emptiness, the fertile ground in which seeds take root. A simple ritual for acknowledging this potent phase of the moon would be to write down new plans and ideas that present themselves and keep them in a moon journal. Looking back over a year of dark moons, you may be amazed to see which seeds have blossomed. Full moons symbolize completion and fulfillment, the realization of the seed, and they are times of celebration. They are a great time to gather friends and family to partake in a communal feast acknowledging the apex of another monthly cycle. Your full moon journal might track the full moons of an entire year with a recounting of the gatheringè'‰he menu, the guest list, and any other observations you feel inspired to make.

Honoring the dark and full moons with these simple rituals brings our year into a new kind of focus. As we acknowledge the flow of the moon's cycles, we become more comfortable with the changing nature of our earthly lives, making our peace with each phase, and with the shifting from emptiness to fullness and back again. We strengthen our connection to the universe in which we live and find peace in both emptiness and fullness, each of which are natural and necessaryè'‰wo sides of the same moon.

Fundamentals of Spell-casting with Judika Illes

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Dec 15, 2011 1:50 pm (PST)

Fundamentals of Spell-casting with Judika Illes

Saturday, January 28 from 1pm-4pm

In the beginning was the word... and the word soon became a spell.
If you travel around the world, from uban centers to the most remote
regions, searching for shared human common denominators, you will
discover the magic spell to the in the forefront. Spell-casting is among the most primordial of all human arts. People from all walks
of life -- from the least educated to the most highly educated, the
spirituall y devout and atheists alike -- have historically relied on
spell-casting to provide solutions for problems as well as to improve
quality of life, especially when other, more conventional methods have
failed. They continue to do so today. A high IQ isn't required to cast a magic spell nor is it necessary to possess special paranormal powers.
Anyone can cast an effective spell, but -- as the old blues song says -- you gotta know how.
We are privileged to live in a rare
magical renaissance, a time when spell-casting can be discussed openly,
rather than whispered in the shadows, as it has been for centuries.
Seize the moment: join Judika Illes, author of The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells and Pure Magic: A Complete Course in Spell-Casting, for a three hour workshop focused on the fundamentals of spell-casting, the practical and philosophical, as well as the mystical. Crucial
methods and techniques for effective spell-casting will be covered.
Topics to be explored include:
* Working with botanicals of all kinds, crystal, and animal familiars
* The philosophy of fire: candle magic
* Discovering your spiritual allies and enhancing your own personal magical powers
* Spirit working
* Folk magic traditions from around the world, including North American hoodoo, Italian stregheria, and Mesican curanderismo.
Bring your questions and concerns. Judika will have books available for purchase and is happy to sign books you already have.
Pre-registration is required

Location

in Ridgefield Park or Ridgewood. Both are accessible by public

Celebration of the Snake by Jan Snyder

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Celebration of the Snake
by Jan Snyder

Tonight I dreamed I was a snake.
"I am serpent", I said with a sibilant hiss, "sssserpent",
Enjoying the sound it made.
My body moved in undulating waves, sliding sideways,
As I stretched out upon my belly on the earth.
I have become too large for my skin,
For I have caught knowledge in my coils,
And understanding has been my food.
I have become fat on the wisdom of the grandmothers.
It is time to burst forth from the bonds of flesh,
To escape the prison of this old constricting body
And for the scales of blindness to fall from my eyes.
I am the despised, forgotten and fallen woman.
I am she who refused to lie beneath the man.
I am she who is free to give her love where she wills,
And I am no slave â€" I give myself as I wish on my terms.
I am sister to the sorceress, to Circe and Medea.
I am Lilith, Magdalene, holy harlot, sacred whore.
I am the virgin mother of the god’s children.
I am the mother of the merry met child.
I am the dread demon goddess.
Call me Kali, Hecate, Astarte.
I am the great Serpent Goddess.
Call me Leviathan, Tiamat.
I am Oroborous, the soul of the world.
I open my mouth and swallow my tail,
Yet I am always whole.
Now my skin splits and I slither forth.
It is not painful at all, though my skin is new.
I am a creature born again,
Iridescent green, glowing, phosphorescent, glorious.

Today's Goddess: Hexe Saint Hildegard Dies

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:14 pm (PST)

Today's Goddess: Hexe
Saint Hildegard Dies

Themes: Health, Banishing, Magic
Symbols: Healing Herbs and Charms

About Hexe: This ancient Germanic witch's goddess rules over health, banishing curses and teaching
people the effective use of spells, charms and other mystical procedure for improving well being, Thus
we come by the old phrase "hex doctor".

To Do Today: Living in the 1100's St Hildegard was a renowned Benedictine nun living in Bingen and
ministering to people with herbal preparations received in visions. Many of these had magical overtone,
perhaps guided by Hexe's influence. In any case, today's theme is learning the art of weaving, "Hexes"
for physical, mental and spiritual health.

On the physical level take a natural object like a cut potato and rub it against an inflicted area. Bury the
potato to "bury" the malady and decompose it. Or carry a jet stone to absorb the problem, then cleanse
the rock in saltwater to wash the bas energy away. For mental well being, enjoy a soothing cup of mint
tea stirred countercockwise so tensions and negativity will wane. Or, carry a flourite stone with you
throughout the day to strengthen your mental powers. For spiritual health, sprinkle nutmeg-laden water
clockwise throughout your aura to empower your physic self. Or, carry a lapis or amethyst stone to draw
goddess centered thinking and action into your day.

Both Sides Now Spell

Both Sides Now Spell
Incense of the day: Musk

The Full
Moon in Gemini can help us see ourselves in more than one aspect. How do you usually describe yourselfâ€"as a “brain,” or as a “jock”? Now is the
time to strip away any stereotypical images we have of ourselves and see another side of our nature. Take a cleansing bath with lavender or your favorite herb. Dress in white and imagine yourself as a clean slate.
Sit and visualize what you would like to see written on that slate.
Imagine yourself doing activities that you would like to do but haven’t
yet attempted. See yourself as a well-rounded person, and congratulate
yourself on your accomplishmentsâ€"no matter how they may come across to
others. Promise yourself that you will not judge yourself by others’
yardsticks. Make a list of areas of your life that need more attention.
Now see yourself as twins doing two separate activitiesâ€"for example,
reading a book alone and charming friends at a party. Slowly visualize
the two persons becoming one complete individual. Review this
visualization whenever you feel the need for more balance in your life.

Sirach 4: 11-18

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:17 pm (PST)

Whoever loves Wisdom loves life,
and those who seek her will be joyful.
Whoever embraces her will be raised up.
Wherever she enters will be blessed.
Whoever obeys her will be a sure judge.
Whoever attends to her will live securely.
If you have faith in her, you will obtain Wisdom,
and so will your descendants.
But first you will walk with her
on narrow paths, fearful and terrified.
First you will be tested by Wisdom,
with her disciples and orders.
But then she will gladden you
and tell you all her secrets.
~Sirach 4: 11-18

It is not easy to become wise. All the great traditions tell us that. Whether it be Buddhism or Christianity,
yoga or tantra, these spiritual paths tell us that to gain wisdom, we must discipline ourselves. We must
struggle to reach understanding. And along the way, we will find ourselves tested in ways we never imagined.
Many are those who give up on the path to wisdom. They wish to be wise, but they wish even more to be comfortable.

No one needs to be ashamed of giving up the search for wisdom, or of taking a break in the struggle. Inner
transformation is difficult, and often painful. And there is no way to predict who will have the courage and the
tenacity to keep struggling to achieve wisdom. It is no use to look at others, whether in envy or in pride, for their
struggles are their own. One who seems wise at twenty may still be just that wise at sixty. One who seems wise
at sixty may become rigid and brittle by seventy. We can only judge ourselves as we struggle to find our own path
to wisdom.
