I conducted a ritual at the Unitarian Church for 15 people. Since they are not all that knowledgeable about Pagan practices, I wrote out rhymes on slips of paper, each one about a Beltane custom. (Ex: When jumping over the fire here, be sure your dress or robe is clear. They were passed around and each participant had to either sing their rhyme, speak it with great oratory prowess, or pay their neighbor to do it. No one took the last option and it was really fun. We drummed and passed between two fires for blessing, actually 2 jumbo candles decorated with flowers. Even the UU minister participated. We then had cakes and ale, and speaking staff. It was great fun for everyone. also had a pot-luck finger-food feast.
The rituals are open to the public, so I always try to teach/explain as we go through it.
The May Day is the Great Day!

Daily Feng Shui Tip for May 4, 2011

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Wednesday, May 4

Feather your own nest on this 'Bird Day' and bring big protection and luck straight to your front door. The Taoists have long believed that feathers found on the ground are gifts from our aviary friends that bring a sense of security as well as some slammin' cosmic luck at the front entry. The custom says that finding feathers is a sign of good fortune, so be sure to give gratitude and grace for the gift when you pick them up. Once home, affixing the feathers around the perimeter of the front door will keep you safe from things that go bump in the night. Actually, birds themselves play a huge role in the Feng Shui philosophy. Red birds are said to be the harbinger of good news as well as good fortune and luck, while magpies, peacocks and lovebirds bring romance, passion and love. Cranes symbolize longevity and when the eagle lands there should be more money in your paycheck. Cardinals bring auspicious news to all those in the publishing world while an image or picture of something called The 100 Birds will bring super success, celebrity, achievement and fame! I use this symbology freely inside my own home and office environment and have those hundred birds sitting in the Fame area of my main floor. If you want to be birds of a feather with me, try all or any of these cures so you can straighten up and fly right into the arms of health, happiness and prosperity!

The light of a hundred stars cannot equal the light of the Moon.

COngressionally Mandated National Day of Prayer

Congressionally Mandated National Day Of Prayer Undercuts Religious Liberty, Says Americans United
Church-State Watchdog Organization Says Individuals, Not Government, Should Make Decisions About Worship
May 4, 2011
Tomorrow's government-proclaimed day of prayer is impossible to square with the constitutional separation of church and state, according to Americans United for Separation of Church and State.
"Americans don't need a federal government directive to tell them when, whether and how to pray," said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. "There are many things that government does well, but managing Americans' religious lives isn't one of them."
The National Day of Prayer (NDP) was created by Congress in 1952. The federal law requires the president to issue a proclamation calling on people to pray. Originally a floating observance, the NDP was mandated as the first Thursday in May by Congress in 1988 at the request of Religious Right groups.
Although a federal appeals court recently dismissed a challenge to the National Day of Prayer on technical grounds, the annual government-sanctioned religious observance remains problematic, says Americans United.

Fw: DailyOM: Anticipating the Good

Anticipating the Good
Anxiety about Change

Change will occur in almost every aspect of our lives, we can learn to embrace it while releasing the past with grace.

When we find ourselves going through any kind of change in our lives, our natural response may be to tense up on the physical, mental, or emotional level. We may not even notice that we have braced ourselves against a shift until we recognize the anxiety, mood swings, or general worried feeling toward the unknown that usually results. There are positive ways to move through change without pushing it away, however, or attempting to deny that it is happening. Since change will occur in almost every aspect of our lives, we can learn to make our response to it an affirmative one of anticipation, welcoming the new while releasing the past with grace.

One thing we can do is change our perspective by changing the labels we use to identify our feelings. We can reinterpret feelings of anxiety as the anxious butterflies that come with eager expectation. With this shift, we begin to look for the good that is on its way to us. Though we may only be able to imagine the possibilities, when we acknowledge that good is there for us to find, we focus our energy on joyful anticipation and bring it into our experience while allowing the feelings to carry us forward.

We can also choose to do a ceremony to allow our emotions to process. Every culture has created ceremonies to help people make the transition from one phase of life to the next. We can always create a ceremony too, perhaps by burning written thoughts to watch the smoke carry them away, thereby releasing them, or we can welcome new endeavors by planting flowers or trees. Some ceremonial activities such as a farewell send-off or housewarming party, we may do automatically. Society also has built-in ceremonies, like graduation and weddings, which may satisfy the need we feel. Sometimes the shift from denial to acceptance is all that is needed to ease our anxiety, allowing us to bring our memories with us as we move through nervousness to joyful excitement about the good to come.

Terminology

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Wed May 4, 2011 12:36 pm (PDT)

I was just reading an article about changing the terminology in an anti-abortion bill for the term "rape" to "forcible rape." According to my dictionary, "rape" is "the unlawful compelling of a woman through physical force or duress to have sexual intercourse." Is there something I am missing here?

needed. It's sad to to hear this.

Sadly, SidheViolet, I suspect you are being far kinder than the situation warrants. Remember that the pushers of this bill are likely the same folk who would have, once upon a time, burned us at the stake, among other death sentences.

Not a damn thing, milady. What I'm wondering is what the agenda behind those words actually are. Let us remember that words have the power to open and close doors, not just in magic. What doors are the authors of this disgusting bit of bait-and-switch trying to open?

I'm wondering the same thing. Rape is, by it's very definition, forcible. So, why the added qualifier? Are some rapes forcible and others not? Don't think so.

Jay, what you say is true. I do tend to think of everyone having an open mind.
Sadly, loopholes will be found in bill or law. Because there are those that find
a way.

My worst fear is that by adding 'forceable' they are somehow building
an out for perpetrators of sexual abuse-many who claim that the child
'encouraged' it or led the perp on somehow, not wanting to assume ANY
responsibility for their own actions ( sadly, I've actually heard both
of those things from perps!). In some repeat abuse situations, the
victim doesn't necessarily put up much struggle because it seems
hopeless, it's easier to just get it over with and struggling seems
only to make it take longer but with the same outcome. I worry that
the disclaimer will allow these types of situations to not be
considered rape even tho it really is. Maybe I'm just assuming the
worst...???

No Lady N, I don't think you're missing a thing. Seems to me as if you've got it right.

They certainly think that by re-wording things it will be alright to tell another what they can and/or can't do with their bodies and/or the emotions.

I'm not familiar with the whole story, but... could it be simply to
differentiate it from statutory rape, which is sex (even if consensual) with
an underaged person?
