 DailyOM - Animals in Nature
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

 April 29, 2011
 Messengers of Direction
 Animals in Nature
Animals in nature always have a message for us, start noticing what animals show
up in your life and when.

Animals share our planet with us, but experience it differentlyâ"each has its own
abilities and gifts that allow them to interact successfully with the natural
world. Since we are merely one manifestation of the universeâs energy in action,
when we feel the need for direction we can turn to animals in nature for
guidance. Animals can show us different ways to approach and deal with our
 challenges.

As we hold a question in mind, we can begin to pay attention to the animal
activity around us. Staring out a window we may notice a bird soaring high in
the sky, showing us how to look at our situation from a greater distance. If we
donât get an immediate answer, we can remember that the universe has its own
perfect timing that doesnât heed the ticking of the clock. Instead, we can
release our question into the universeâs care, and then trust that an animal
messenger will carry inspiration our way. In the meantime, we align ourselves
with the universeâs rhythmâ"opening, humbling ourselves, and shifting our
perceptions so that at the perfect time we will be ready. Then, even weeks
later, the sight of a small bird hopping from branch to branch may signal for us
to use a talent other than our greatest strength and to take small leaps rather
than fly over details. A squirrel bounding across an open expanse of grass to
stash its latest prize may remind us to check our favorite hid! ing places for
forgotten treasure. Even if we donât see actual animals, their representations
may hold messages; whether we see them in a shape in the clouds, a picture, or a
show on television, their symbolic meaning is the same.

Animals are closer to the rhythms and cycles of nature and have fewer
distractions from it than humans do. That is why they are the perfect messengers
when we are in need of advice. Just by being themselves they remind us of the
wisdom of the universe, and that all answers are available to us when we
reconnect with our source and with those who know how to be nurtured by it.

In Loving Memory of Cory Lee Hyman

Today we light a candle in memory of Cory was one of former Beyond the Summits
leaders. Even though Cory walked into our hearts for such a short time he had
the biggest spirit of all. He visualized big things for us and never gave it a
seconds thought to move forward with his ideas. He was open and honest, he was a
kind of person that is not a stranger, you meet him it's like you knew him
forever. Cory you Had a heart of Gold and You will always be missed.

 So MOtE it BE.

__*Recent PAST SHOWS... You can access them in the archives*_ -

_*Marie Jones*_, author of *The Trinity Secret: The Power of Three & the
Code of Creation* discusses her book revealing the origin of trinity
myths, science vs the triune nature of reality, the sacredness of three,
and how this correlates with the code of creation.
Followed by...._*Yaba Badoe*_ producer/director of the award winning
documentary *The Witches of Gambaga*, an extraordinary story of a
community of women condemned to live as witches in Northern Ghana. This
is a story of strong community of "witches" and women's movement
activists determined to end abusive practices and improve women's lives
 in Ghana.

Filmmaker _*Steve Jones*_ will discuss the year he spent with Lady
Olivia Robertson of the Fellowship of Isis as he made the film about her
life, *Olivia, Priestess of Isis*. Followed by....

Documentary film maker,_*Thomas Quinn*_, discussing his book, *What Do
You Do with a Chocolate Jesus? (An Irreverent History of
Christianity).*...a funny but factual history of the New Testament, the
growth of Christianity and religion's role in the founding of America.
But we don't stop with the past, we also discuss the politics of
religion in the present: The re-writing of history by bogus Right Wing
historians, Evangelical Christians, the Tea Party and Sarah Palin, and
the phoney fears of Sharia Law and Glen Beck's apocalyptic ravings.
We're going to ask questions like why Eve got a raw deal? Was Jesus a
feminist? Was there ever really a female pope? Where does the bible
stand on abortion? Do politicians misrepresent Christianity? Is our
 government based on Christian values?

_*Barbara Walker*_, author of */Man Made God/ *and how that has shaped
our society. Followed by _*Patrick McCollum*_ bringing us up to date on
the Tier One vs Two religious intolerance lawsuit in CA, his travels to
Nepal, Russia, the UK, Israel and Palestine and what's happened since he
 received the Mahatma Ghandi award.

_*Charlene Spretnak*_, author of *Relational Reality*: New Discoveries
of Interrelatedness That Are Transforming the Modern World will
discuss: What is relational reality, examples of interrelatedness in
areas of health, education/parenting, community/design/ architecture and
the economy. What are some of the implications of the Relational Shift
 with regard to women.
 Followed by -
_*Nancy Williams*_, author of Hawkmoon discussing the *Roles of Women in
 the Frontier West*.

_*Elizabeth Fisher*_ , author of the Rise Up and Call Her Name program,
discussing *Lilith Meets the Green Man*. In our conversation we'll be
discussing who Lillith and the Green Man are, the symbolism of the
apple, tree and serpent in the Garden of Eden myth, and how these
symbols tie into Lilith and the Green man mythologies. Then we'll see
how this all relates to ourcurrent cultural and political conflicts and
how this new mythology helps us build community.

*_Marguerite Rigoglioso_ *- author of *Virgin Mother Goddesses of
Antiquity *and our show topic is*When God Was a Virgin Mother...and the
Eleusinian Mysteries Illuminated*. Very interesting stuff including
discussion of an older Athena - the one that wasn't birthed from Zeus'
head. And in our talk, we'll discuss a new interpretation for
Persephone's rape by Hades and much more. And more....Marguerite is
also the author of *The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece* and time
permitting we'll see how these books overlap!

*_Bob Walter_ *, Executive Director of the *Joseph Campbell Foundation*
discussed what it means to be a "mythic activist", the importance of
Joseph Campbell's work in the world, the hero/heroine's journey, and how
rational thought, and the I versus WE mentality, replaced Goddess. I
also plan to ask Bob: What happens when myths become not metaphors but
fact (aka religion) and how it contributes to the agony of the world.
When one understands the psychology of myth and it's role in religion
where does that leave most people on the subject of God/ess? The
Atheist? Can we reconcile believing in God/ess with understanding myth
and how can we reconcile myth with your own spirituality/religion?

Time: 6PM Pacific/9PM Eastern. You'll have to make adjustments for
your time zone. And the show is available later from the archives where
you might listen at your convenience.

Goddess is a Democrat !! Imagine the feedback from that statement in my
interviews with Riane Eisler and Starhawk on my radio show, Voices of
the Sacred Feminine. But what were we really saying in that statement
that might not have been immediately evident? We were saying the
strategy to move us toward that paradigm shift, into a post-kyriarchal
world, would not just be the use of secular law, but through a change in
thealogy - the mythology of the Sacred Feminine, deity, archetype and
ideal, might re-establish the foundations on our planet necessary for
sustainable future for all life and Mother Earth. Hear the line of
thought....presented at the WECSOR/American Academy of Religion by Dr.
Rev. Karen Tate. For more info go to www.karentate.com

What's Happening Today...Beltane Blessings to all:

The new moon is for starting new ventures, new beginnings. Also love and
 romance, health or job hunting.

Holy Rood Day - Here is a day honoring trees, at this time of the year when
trees are at their most magnificent. Of course, it became associated with that
particular Christian tree, the Cross, which is known as the Rood.

In England, this was considered a fortunate day for putting bulls to cows. The
way it is celebrated by the Indians in Mexico recalls its undoubted origins as a
fertility festival like May Day and Beltane. In some villages, people begin to
prepare for it in February, bringing wood from the hills to make crosses. On
April 8, the mayordomos and wives go to the river to wash the clothes of the
holy cross along with musicians. They replace the old crosses with new ones and
dress them up in new clothes, kerchiefs and ribbons. They dance around the
benches in the church, three times between, three times backwards and three
 times around.

The Holy Cross is the patron of masons so crosses are set up on every work site
and decorated with flowers and streamers. At noon, all work stops and the men
drink and shoot off fireworks. This day also carries the reputation of being
 singularly unfortunate.

Avoiding Day - In Scotland, May the 3rd was called "Avoiding Day" or the ³Dismal
Day² and the day on which it fell was considered unlucky throughout the year.
One explanation for the taint of bad luck attached to this day declared that
this was the day the bad angels were kicked out of heaven. They haunt the earth
on this day and make it an unlucky day to start a journey, get married or count
livestock. Blackburn, Bonnie and Leofranc Holford-Strevens, Oxford Companion to
the Year, Oxford University Press 1999, Kightly, Charles, The Perpetual Almanack
of Folklore, Thames & Hudson 1987

*Sts Timothy and Mavra -These newlywed Christians were martyred by being nailed
to a wall. Since Mavra means black in Greek, no one cuts, bleaches or sews cloth
on this day lest black spots appear on the cloth or on the hands. In fact, "all
activities which are not absolutely safe are generally avoided." Blackburn,
Bonnie and Leofranc Holford-Strevens, Oxford Companion to the Year, Oxford
 University Press 1999

Our Lady of Czestochowa - One of the most interesting of the Black goddesses, a
manifestation of the Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows. People make
pilgrimages to her shrine in Poland. She has dark skin and two parallel vertical
scars on her cheek. She bows her head and holds the Christ Child in her arms.

In the Vodou tradition, this image is used to represent Ezili Danto, an aspect
of the love-goddess who's a fierce single mother. Haitians see her child as a
girl and recognize her African heritage in the scars, recalling tribal practices
of marking the skin. Ezili Danto has many lovers but is never married. When she
takes human lovers, in a spirit marriage, she is as likely to marry women as
men. So she is seen as an independent, child-bearing women with a sexuality that
flouts patriarchal conventions. She is hard-working and quick to respond to
crisis. But she is also quick to anger. A song for Danto, says "When you see
Danto pass by, you say it is a thunderstorm." Brown, Karen McCarthy, Mama Lola:
A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn, University of California Press 1991

 Sea Salt Protection Spell

People over the world agree that salt has cleansing, restorative, and curative
powers. In order to rid yourself of negativity, you canât go wrong using sea
salt. Sea salt holds many of the essential healing properties of nature. To
increase strength, luck, and fortitude, go to your grocer or health-food store
and buy sea salt. Spread the salt on the areas you wish cleansed. Lightly
sprinkle sea salt into your bath, saying:

 Salt of ocean,
 Salt of earth,
From ocean I sprang, upon my birth.
With Venus I rose above sea and shell,
The power of salt makes everything well.

 So mote it be.

- Today's Goddess: Amaterasu Hakata Dontaku (Japan)Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411Mon May 2, 2011 8:23 pm (PDT)
 Today's Goddess: Amaterasu
 Hakata Dontaku (Japan)

Themes: Sun; Tradition; Unity; Blessings; Community; Kinship
Symbols: Mirror; Gold or Yellow Items

About Amaterasu: Amaterasu is unique among Goddesses, being one of the few
women to personify the sun. In Japan she rules over cultural unity, kinship,
and the blessings that someone with the name, "Illuminating Heaven" might be
expected to bestow. It's Amaterasu's sun that nudges the greenery to reach
toward her light, just as her gentle energy prods us toward reestablishing
 harmony in all our relationships.

To Do Today: The first week of May in Japan is called Golden Week, and it's a
time when Amaterasu's solar beauty really shines. The Hakata festival is a
national holiday that includes celebrations for children and a special parade
depicting Japan's legendary deities. Take a moment to join the festivities
long-distance. Remember Amaterasu by wearing gold-colored items today and
opening as many curtains as possible to let in her glorious light.

Once the curtains are opened, take a hand mirror and reflect the light into
every corner of your home. This draws Amaterasu's unifying energy into your
living space and guards against discord among all who dwell therein. Also, to
ensure that no malevolence enters from outside the home, put a mirror facing
