Introduction

Dzogchen is an ancient teaching that explains both who we are in the
world as in our essence, and how we can make our essence manifest again.
It has always been a secret teaching, not because there is anything to
hide, but because its teaching can be easily misinterpreted by those who
have not gained enough understanding in the mind and the divine
essence. Then it easily can lead the practitioner astray. But times have
changed. The traditional Tibetan culture has been dispersed all over
the globe; and many people are now ready to receive various spiritual
teachings. Several books about Dzogchen have been and are still
published that explain in detail this wonderful teaching. Here you will
find a summary of Dzogchen.

Dzogchen is considered to be both the final and ultimate teaching, and
the heart of the teachings of all the Buddhist teachings. Dzogchen has
been practiced throughout the centuries by masters of all the different
schools as their innermost practice. Its origins reach back to before
human history, and neither is it limited to Buddhism, nor to Tibet, nor
indeed even to this world of ours, as it is recorded that it has existed
in thirteen different world systems.

Dzogchen is widely translated as "Great Perfection", but this may imply a
perfection that we strive to attain, and this is not the meaning of
Dzogchen. Dzogchen is explained as Ground, Path and Fruition, and from
the point of view of the Ground, it is the already self-perfected state
of our primordial nature, which needs no 'perfecting' , for it has
always been perfect from the very beginning, just like the sky. It is
uncreated, yet spontaneously accomplished.

The Founder of Dzogchen

Garab Dorje "was the first master of Dzogchen, who himself received
transmission through direct visionary contact with the Sambhogakaya.
Dzogchen teachings were taught for the first time on this planet in this
time cycle by Garab Dorje, who manifested a birth in a Nirmanakaya form
as a human being in the third century B.C.E., in the country of Ogyen,
which was situated to the north west of India. He spent his life there
teaching to both human beings and the dakinis. His final teaching before
he entered the Body of Light was to summarize the teachings in Three
Principles, sometimes known as "The Three Last Statements of Garab
Dorje."

He left behind this testament for all the Dzogchen practitioners of the future. The Three Statements of Garab Dorje are:

"Introduce in the state directly" refers to the transmission by the
master, who, in various ways, introduces and brings the disciple to
understand the condition of "what is", the individual's primordial
state. This is the Base.

"Do not remain in doubt" means that one must have a precise knowledge of
this state, finding the state of the presence of contemplation which is
one and the same in all the thousands of possible experiences. This is
the Path.

"Continue in the profound knowledge of self-liberation" is the Fruit.
That means, the complete and unchangeable knowledge of self-liberation
is totally integrated with one's daily life and in all circumstances one
continues in that state. All the hundreds and hundreds of original
texts of Dzogchen can be considered to be an explanation of these three
verses of Garab Dorje." (from "The Crystal and the Way of Light" and
"Dzogchen, the Self-Perfected State" by Chögyal Namkhai Norbu )

Overview of Dzogchen Teachings

Our essential being, that what we were, what we are and what we always
will be, is a state of awareness that is primordial pure. Our normal
mind and consciousness is always obscured by impurities of emotions and
thoughts.; but our essence is total purity. This is also called the
Natural State of our being.

This primordial purity is empty. Emptiness has no obscurations
whatsoever, nor by emotions, nor by thoughts. Dzogchen uses the image of
a mirror which has the capacity to reflect whatever is in front of it,
but is not obscured by it. The mirror always remains the same.

We all are this primordial purity or emptiness. But our everyday
consciousness is so clouded by emotions and thoughts that we are not
aware of it, and thus we don't recognize it.

When our awareness is in the Natural State, then there are no
restrictions or limitations to the expression of our being. The
appearances we perceive are are just reflections in the mirror of the
mind. They are manifestations of the mind. As such they are perfect and
as they should be. Manifestations come and go. They are recognized as
just reflections, or 'illusions', and are enjoyed as such. Awareness
remains in its pure state.

As ordinary beings on this earth, our awareness identifies itself with
the manifestations and takes them to be real. There is no awareness of
the pure state. One's consciousness is clouded by the constant activity
of emotions and thoughts, which also has a tendency to narrow our
perception.

Most of us have never experienced their true pure essence in our lives,
so how do we know what it is? In Dzogchen one first needs a direct
introduction to one's Natural State, usually from someone who has
directly experienced it himself. By this one knows the difference
between one's Natural State and one's daily clouded consciousness. Then
one has to practice to make this Natural State to happen again, even for
brief periods, and then to make it more permanent. In meditation one
will find that the mind continuously produces thoughts. Thus, thoughts
are looked at. They are observed to arise and to flow away. By this, one
discover that thoughts actually do not exist by themselves; they are
insubstantial waves that come and go and cease to exist. They are just
waves or movement in the mind. It is important not to identify or to
follow the thoughts, as they lead your awareness away. Thoughts can be,
but do not have to be, eliminated. The point is to keep one's awareness
on one's true essence, and let the thought go by. It's like a watching a
train go by, instead of jumping on the train and ending up elsewhere. A
lot of thoughts are just ramblings, automatic programs that just keep
your mind busy all day. Once these have been quieted, one is able to
really think what one wants, and not allow thoughts that are not wanted.
Of course, the purpose is eventually to stay aware of one's Natural
State. The more the thought process slows down, the clearer
consciousness becomes. Our mind becomes very clear and alert; and aware
that beyond those thoughts there is an ever present state of clearness
and emptiness (empty of the obscurations) . One becomes more and more
aware of oneself. In our everyday awareness we are not aware of
ourselves, we are aware of emotions, of thoughts, of what is around us.
By practicing Dzogchen we become aware of our true self, pure, clear
awareness of self.

The Natural State possesses the qualities of emptiness and clarity.
These are of course concepts of our mind. Anything we think of,
including what the terms emptiness and clarity means, is a construct of
the mind, and not the true Natural State. But in our human world we need
words and concepts to communicate, and as such these terms are
approximations. The natural state is just itself, beyond the mind and
all its constructions. When one is in the Natural State, one just is.
One cannot describe it accurately.

The Natural State is permanent, but Dzogchen does not hold the view that
a separate, independent self exists on its own and is self-sufficient.
No eternal, independent, separate, concrete entity or identity such as
an eternal soul or self can be found. In normal life we constantly
create a sense of self. This grasping at a self is done by ignorance
because we lack real knowledge and awareness of our true state of being.
During practice we cannot find this self. It is just not there. When we
search the mind it is not there. What is this "I" that we so
desperately cling to? The self is not a single unified entity or
substance, but it is a process occurring in time. It is a succession of
states of consciousness having varied mental contents. It is like a
river that changes from moment to moment. it is never the same.

When practicing Dzogchen one can arrive at a state of mind, where there
are little or even no thoughts. One experiences profound stillness, or
calmness. But this does not mean one has attained the Natural state. One
can get fixated on a state with no thoughts, but this is still a state
of mind, and thus a reflection or creation of the mind. One needs to
look at the source of thoughts. Who is thinking, who is watching the
thoughts? As we don't find either a watcher or what is being watched,
both of them dissolve. Then a state of clear emptiness arises. Emptiness
of thoughts, and clarity of awareness. In this state we are not
thinking nor do we make an analysis, or interpretation. We find
ourselves in our Natural State, beyond conception by the intellect.

In the beginning, being in this Natural State is short lived, because of
our habit of residing in a consciousness that dominated by continuous
thoughts and concepts. With practice we enter in this state again and
again, and try to stay in it longer. Again, it does not mean that
thoughts do not arise anymore. The diminishing of elimination of
thoughts are just a means. The goal is to stay in the Natural State when
thoughts come and go. Then one is not subject to thoughts, thoughts are
subject to the state of clear awareness.

During practice, there are three obstacles which can disturb our
meditation. The body easily becomes drowsy. Dullness makes us loose our
clarity. Agitation happens when thoughts take us for a ride. When these
happen, it is best to take a break, refresh oneself, and start over
again.

The Base, the Path and the Fruit

The Dzogchen teachings are often structured threefold: the Base, the Path and the Fruit.

The Base

Usually a realized master introduce the Natural State to the student. He
is able to directly transfer that state of awareness to his student.
The student who now has experienced his Natural State of being, even if
it is only briefly, then has to practice in order to enter the natural
state again and again. This constitutes the Path. But first the student
has to have had a direct experience of the Natural State.

The Base is the experience of identity with the Natural State. It is the
fundamental ground of existence, both at the universal level and at the
level of the individual. The base has always been there, has always
been pure and perfect. It is present in every living being. It is
non-dual. Once the being enters duality the experience of the Natural
State is lost. This means that is temporary obscured by attachment and
aversion arisen from ignorance of dualistic vision. A normal person is
ignorant and thus his Natural State is only latent; but for a realized
person it is manifest. The goal of practice is to make the Natural State
manifest again. From the moment we enter into dualistic vision, we
leave the primordial Base, and transmigration begins. Transmigration is
the continuous movement of going from one body to the next because of
karmic causes. One has become subject to cause and effect.

The primordial state is beyond space and time, beyond creation and
destruction. But its nature is to manifest itself as light, as the
elements, as energy and all the interactions that end up what we
experience and enjoy as the cosmos. Entering into duality we become
caught up with all these projections which we mistakenly take as
external reality. Thus we perceive the individual as made up of Body,
Voice and Mind. The Body is the entire physical manifestation of the
person. Voice is the vital energy (prana) of the Body. The Mind is that
what reasons.

The Natural state is permanent, all the rest is impermanent or temporal.
Why is everything we experience, including ourselves impermanent and
temporal? All phenomena lack inherent existence; nothing exists by
itself as a permanent something. If something existed permanently, it
would have its own inherent existence, and nothing else could affect or
change it. It would be immutable and unchanging. There would be no
causality, no cause would be able to change it into something else.
Experience tells us otherwise. Everything is changing all the time, thus
everything lacks inherent existence. It is our perception that makes us
think that phenomena are somehow solid and permanent.

The Base, or Natural State, has a threefold condition: Essence, Nature and Energy.

The Essence of the Base is fundamental voidness. Voidness means that
when one examine thoughts, one will find that they come and go, but do
not have any real, independent existence. It is a phenomenon that only
temporarily exists. Before and after a thought there is only emptiness,
voidness. This emptiness is fundamentally pure and clear, and it is
compared to a mirror. A mirror reflects whatever is put in front of it,
but the mirror itself is never changed, nor made impure or obscured. It
always remains empty and clear. Thoughts come and go, but they are just
reflections, they do not change the purity and emptiness of the Natural
State.

The Nature of the Base is the manifest phenomena. Although phenomena
coma and go, and at their essence they are void and empty, nevertheless
phenomena do exist and continue to manifest. This is compared to the
nature of a mirror. Although the mirror remains empty and pure, it is
its nature to continuously reflect what is in front of it.

The Energy of the Base is the way the Base, or the Natural State,
manifests itself. This is compared to the reflections themselves in the
mirror.

Essence, Nature and Energy are all interdependent. One cannot exist without the other two.

The last one Energy manifests itself threefold: Zal, Rolba and Dan (untranslatable terms)

Zal (the appearance of a seemingly external world): is the energy of the
individual that appears as a seemingly external world. The individual
sees himself as a separate entity that lives in outer world of objects.
But these outer objects/world are actually projections from his own
energy. This compared to a crystal. Light (energy) enters the crystal
(the individual) and projects into rays and patterns of colors which are
seen as separate from the crystal, but in fact they are functions of
the crystal's nature. In reality there are no external independent or
separate phenomena; they are manifestations of the energy of the
individual.

Rolba (the way in which the energy of an individual manifests): In
the individual the energy is experienced as an internal image. The
image might appear as very vivid and real. But it is just a
manifestation of his energy. This is compared to the image of an object
that is seen inside a crystal ball.

Dan (infinite and formless quality of the energy): the energy of
an individual can take any form whatsoever. Because of the individual
karmic vision, its energy will shape itself into a Body, Voice and Mind
with an external environment; life after life. This is compared to a
crystal ball that will take the color of whatever colored cloth it is
put on.

The Path

After the student has been introduced to the Natural State of being, he
need to practice the Path in order to get out of his dualistic view and
condition, and to realize again his true Natural state. The Path has
three aspects: View, Practice and Attitude.

View means that one has to observe oneself and discover what one's own
condition is in regards to his body, voice and mind. In this way one
will find that one is conditioned by a lot of things, and stuck in many
'programs'. The body is conditioned by its living conditions, external
influences, nutrients and so on. The vital body has problems with energy
being stuck, not flowing freely, causing both emotional problems and
physical ailments over time. The mental body has its own imbalances,
like a distorted view of the world, mental fixations, unhealthy thought
processes... Here we have the image of the mirror again: the
practitioner needs to look in the mirror of his own being.

Practice strictly means contemplation, that is, one strives to enter the
state of non-duality, the Natural State, and tries to stay in it for
longer and longer periods. Thoughts can come and go, but when properly
centered in the Natural State, the practitioner will not be affected by
those thoughts. The mind itself is not engaged in doing any effort or
work, as it is the case in meditation. Meditation engages the mind to do
something with for example visualization to bring about a state of calm
that is inductive to enter contemplation. Once in contemplation one is
totally present ad aware, and one neither rejects nor follows any
thought. Because we are all different, and our energies are all
different, one has to look inside to find one's own kind of obstacles
(=View), and then one has to choose and employ a meditation technique(s)
that will help him to dissolve those obstacles. Meditation techniques
are a help to overcome one's problems, but they should not be a goal by
itself. The focus in Dzogchen is always on contemplation.

Conduct means that once the practitioner is able to stay in
contemplation, in the Natural State of clear awareness, during his
practice, then he needs to continue, being in this Natural State, into
his daily life. Then he brings his present clear awareness into every
moment of his life. He avoids all distractions that could bring him out
of the Natural State. His mind doesn't wander about the past or future,
but he can actively plan something for the future while remaining clear
and aware of the present. For this he needs to cultivate constant clear
awareness of his entire being. It is an attitude or conduct that will
allow him to gain mastery over the karmic causes in his life. Karmic
causes are twofold: primary and secondary. Primary causes come from the
past and can be experienced as good or bad. But the primary causes need
the right conditions in this life time to be able to manifest
themselves, thus they need secondary karmic causes. When the
practitioner has continuous clear awareness of the Natural State, he is
able to recognize when the secondary karmic causes are arising and
prevent the negative ones to develop, while stimulating the positive
ones. Eventually he is not conditioned at all by any experience, good or
bad. Thus he becomes completely liberated from conditioned existence.
He is not limited by the actions of the manifested world. He can act
completely free from all limitations, rules and causes/effects. Such a
person may be seen acting in strange and unexpected ways. A master of
himself, he is free to do what he wants, but he remains aware of the
needs and limitations of other people, and he will always try to help
them to observe themselves and to make their own decisions.

The Fruit

The fruit is Realization. Realization means that one has made manifest
in his awareness that which he in essence always has been, that is, a
state of pure, clear awareness that we call the Natural State. Through
the process of ever deepening awareness of this state one self-liberates
from from the dualistic vision. All passions and all karmic causes that
condition a person to a dualistic world have dissolved. This person has
no attachments to these plays of energies. There is no separation of
subject and object, which is merely a habitual vision of unrealized
beings.

A practitioner who remains continuously in the Natural State does not
expect any virtuous qualities to arise or fear bad consequences of wrong
actions. The Natural State is beyond all karmic causality and its
effects. Such a practitioner is not subject to causality or karma. Our
existence as a human being is the result of our impure karmic vision
brought about by causes. It is impure because it is caused by ignorance
and the passions or emotional defilements.

Tibetan letter "A", the symbol of body of light.

The letter A also symbolizes symbolizing the concept of "infinite space".

Ultimately, the practitioner dissolves his personal
reality into the Reality of the Natural State. This also means that the
physical body dissolves because it is just one manifestation of our
impure karmic vision. It returns to the primordial energetic essence of
the Five Pure Lights of the Rainbow Body or Light Body. This is not a
symbolic thing. There are a number of documented cases where the
practitioner dissolved his physical body, leaving only hair or nails
behind.

When one enters into the Natural State and continues this state for a
prolonged period of time, the potentiality of the Natural State has the
occasion to manifest spontaneously as vision. Thus, the ultimate result
of a prolonged practice is the attainment of the Light Body or Rainbow
Body (also called Sambhogakaya, a body made entirely of light). The
realized Dzogchen practitioner, no longer deluded by apparent
substantiality or dualisms such as mind and matter, releases the energy
of the elements that compose the physical body at the time of death or
even before. This is not a transformation process of an impure physical
body into a pure light body. In Dzogchen there is nothing to be
transformed, and nothing to be visualized. The Light Body is not the
result of visualization. Visualizations are the products of the mind.
But the Dzogchen practitioner is in a state beyond the mind. The vision
that arises spontaneously is a manifestation of what is already
primordially present in the Natural State. It simply manifests.

Because the Natural State is both emptiness, and spontaneous
manifestation, when a being enters the Natural State, compassion for all
sentient beings arises spontaneously. Unlike with other Buddhist
practices, compassion does not have to be cultivated by the mind. In the
natural State it has always been there.

The Light Body has two sides: emptiness which is permanent and wisdom
which is impermanent. It is a seemingly dualistic concept, but both
emptiness and wisdom (=clarity and awareness; wisdom is the
understanding of the emptiness and insubstantiality of all phenomena,
internal as well external) are always inseparable in the Natural State.
Clarity and awareness are a manifestation side and thus impermanent
because they are changing all the time, while emptiness is constant.
This is very similar to the concept of Shiva and Shakti in Kashmir
Shaivism. As human beings we are both Shiva, permanent, passive
consciousness and Shakti, dynamic consciousness. Shiva is the immobile
center, Shakti is like a reflection of Shiva bringing forth the
manifestation and creation of the cosmos.

The being who has now become his Light Body or Rainbow Body can appear
to sentient beings to teach them. The Rainbow Body, which is a pure
light manifestation, is not material, but it can appear to be so since
it can act on all the senses of a sentient being simultaneously. The
Light Body can be perceived only by the Aryas (highly realized beings).
Ordinary beings cannot see or hear this manifestation. Only when the
Realized being manifests in a visible, physical manifestation, can he be
seen by human beings.

Tapihritsa was an ordinary person from a nomadic family in the country
of Zhang Zhung (The Zhang Zhung culture is an ancient culture that
flourished in the western and northern parts of Tibet before the
introduction of Buddhism into the country during the 7th century). The
main teacher of Tapihritsa was Dawa Gyaltsen. Tapihritsa practiced for
nine years before he attained illumination. The place where he
practiced is a holy place outside Mount Kailesh (=is a peak in the
Gangdisê Mountains, which are part of the Himalayas in Tibet), a place
called Senge Tap. After nine years of practice there, Tapihritsa
achieved the rainbow body.

Sogyal Rinpoche (Chapter10 of Tibetan Book of Living & Dying)
wrote: "In 1952 there was a famous instance of the rainbow body in the
East of Tibet, witnessed by many people. The man who attained it, Sonam
Namgyal, was the father of my tutor at the beginning of this book.

He was a very simple, humble person, who made his way as an itinerant
stone carver, carving mantras and sacred texts. Some say he had been a
hunter in his youth, and had received a teaching from a great master. No
one really knew he was a practitioner; he was truly called a "hidden
yogin."

. . . he then fell ill, or seemed to, but became strangely, increasingly
happy. When he illness got worse, his family called in masters and
doctors. His son told him he should remember, 'Everything is illusion,
but I am confident that all is well.'

Just before his death at seventy-nine, he said "All I ask is that when I
die, don't move my body for a week." When he died his family wrapped
his body and invited Lamas and monks to come and practice for him. They
placed the body in a small room in the house, and they could not help
noticing that although he had been a tall person, they had no trouble
getting it in, as if he were becoming smaller. At the same time, an
extraordinary display of rainbow-colored light was seen all around the
house. When they looked into the room on the sixth day, they saw that
the body was getting smaller and smaller. On the eight day after his
death, the morning in which the funeral had been arranged, the
undertakers arrived to collect the body. When they undid its coverings,
they found nothing inside but his nails and hair.

One of the most frequently painted forms of rainbow-body emanation
is that of Padmasambhava (also called Guru Rinpoche), a great Buddhist
teacher. When Padmasambhava is represented as manifesting on the
dharmakaya (truth-body = light body), sambhogakaya (bliss- or
enjoyment-body = energy body) , and nirmanakaya (activity-body =
physical body) level simultaneously, then three rainbow sources emanates
from his crown, forehead and heart centers, respectively. These three
rainbow-streams merge together very subtly to produce a harmonious
triple whirl-pool of rainbow waves.

Choose Discipline

Discipline is your
friend.  Discipline is a liberator that makes it possible for you to achieve
great things.  Through discipline, you achieve cleanliness and order, which
gives you the great gifts of time and peace.

Discipline rids you of
addictions, apparent pleasures which are not, in the long run, pleasures at all,
but rather a handing over of your power.

And discipline liberates
the artist within, allowing creative self-expression through a musical
instrument, dance and song, painting and sculpture.

Discipline is the wind
beneath the wings of freedom which allows you to soar.

And the foundation of
discipline is responsibility and active, conscious choice.  When you decide you
truly want the free and open expression of yourself, when you decide that you
truly prefer a life in which you awaken feeling good about yourself, when you
decide you want this above all, more than you want the temporary feeling of
gratification, then nothing can stop you.

You have the means within
you.  It will be a challenge, yes, but life is full of challenges.  The
difference between this challenge and the others in your life is that there are
no outside forces to contend with.  You have the power and the means to do what
you desire to do.

You are much stronger than
you realize.  Choose.  Choose to win, instead of to do battle every day.  Choose
to give yourself what you are asking for.  Choose to liberate yourself from your
self-imposed prison and fly out into life, soaring high and free.

The Law of Attraction says that that which is like unto itself, is
drawn. In other words, that which you think, in any moment, attracts
unto itself other thoughts that are like it. That is why whenever you are
thinking about a subject that is not pleasant, in a very short period of
time, most of you, upon any subject that you ponder very long, attract
enough supporting data that it does bring forth the essence of the
subject of the thought into your experience.

HECATE, MOON GODDESS OF MYSTERY AND MAGICK

Hecate, or Hekate, is the Goddess of the Underworld and the Goddess of the
Dark Phase of the Moon. The name Hecate is believed to have been derived
from one of the following Egyptian words: Hewitt, Hemet, or Heat. Hecate was
the daughter of the Titans Parses and Astoria, and the mother of the nymph
Scylla, although there are some who claim that she was actually the mother
of the Goddess and Sorceress Circe.

Even though Hecate is sometimes associated with all three phases of the Moon
she is, more often then not, connected with the third stage of the Moon,
which is the Dark Moon. For that reason, she takes on the role of the Crone
in a typical Triple Goddess formation in which there is a Maiden, a Mother
and a Crone. Hecate has also been known as the "Queen of Ghosts," the
Goddess of the Three-Way Crossroads" and the "Goddess of the Dead," and it
was there, at those three-way crossroads, that her followers held midnight
rituals in her honor. She was also believed to roam the Earth on moonless
nights, accompanied by her pack of hounds.

The Dark Goddess, Hecate, has been around for as long as anyone can remember
She was definitely pre-Olympian, and most likely Thracian in origin. The
Greek and the Roman pantheons each quickly cleaved her unto their breasts
and made it seem, for all intent and purposes, that she was one of their own
What we do know, is that Hecate existed as least as far back as when the
war began between the Olympians and the Giants.

While the other Gods chose to live on Mount Olympus, Hecate preferred to
live in the Underworld; sharing that place of darkness and death with Hades
and Persephone, and with Khanates, Hypos and Orpheus, the Gods of Death,
Sleep and Dreams. However, when Persephone was not on one of her three-month
visits to the Underworld, she went up upon the Earth and Olympus, to take on
her role as the beautiful Goddess of Springtime.

Hecate had great powers of her own outside of the Underworld, since she was
also the Goddess of the Night Sky. Hecate and Persephone were polar
opposites of each other, and when they left the Underworld to travel up to
the Earth, Persephone brought with her brightness and life, while Hecate
brought with her darkness, and all of the things that tend to accompany
darkness. It was Hecate who met the souls of the dead, and then led them
into the Land of the Shades from one of its entrances at Lake Verna. When
the souls of the dead went to enter the Underworld, they had to pass by
Hecate's sacred trees, the Willows and the Yews.

Willow trees were believed to be extremely important to witches, since they
supposedly were bound to them and helpless without them. It was in those
hidden caves surrounding Lake Verna that witches would gather to summon the
souls of the dead. The witches who worshipped Hecate usually did so at the
three-way crossroads, on the very blackest of nights, and on her holy days,
which were the Feast of Divine Life on September 21, Samhain on October 31,
and on November 16, which was known as the Night of Hecate the Three-Formed.

Hecate's followers usually worshipped her by leaving offerings of food,
rather then through sacrifice, which is what most people tend to associate
with a Dark Goddess. Hecate's sacred color was black, and her sacred animals
were the toad, a symbol of conception, and dogs; but more often then not, hounds.

Hecate is yet another of the Greek Goddesses of the Moon, and she represents
the third aspect of the moon which is the Dark Moon. She has been known as
the Hag, the Crone and the Dark Mother, and it was believed that she had
great wisdom and knowledge. She was also believed to be a keeper of secrets,
and of mysteries. Hecate was known, as well, as a Huntress Goddess, and she
frequently was depicted having the head of a boar, a horse or a dog.

Many people believed that Hecate had the ability to control the spirit world
as well as the powers of nature such as birth, life and death. Another myth
regarding Hecate was that dogs were the only ones that could hear her, as
she traveled across the Earth in the dark evening sky. It is from there that
the old wives tale comes from, which claims that when dogs bark at night
for no particular reason, they have actually done so because Hecate had just
been passing by. Some people have pictured Hecate as an Amazon Goddess,
travelling about in a chariot drawn by fire-breathing dragons, while her
powers of sorcery were believed to be the best in the world.

As far back as the eighth century, B.C.E., Hecate was depicted in an ancient
statue having wings on her back, and holding a snake in her hands. She was
also believed to be a shape-shifter, who could change her form, or even her
age, and rejuvenate at will. The most important thing of all, was that she
was believed to have the ability to kill.

Hecate was also known as Hecate Trevia, or Hecate of the Three Ways. She was
given that name because her statues stood at the three-way crossroads.
People would frequently leave offerings to her at those three-way crossroads
on evenings when the moon was full, and those offerings consisted of dogs,
honey and black lambs.

In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, Hecate was one of the parties who were
helpful in bringing Persephone back home. Zeus always had the greatest
respect for Hecate, and he would frequently seek her counsel, whenever he
had to deal with mortals on the Earth.

When the Titans ruled the world, Hecate acquired a great many privileges,
and Zeus had actually allowed her to keep them all. Hecate, however, had no
desire for more then she had, even though those privileges gave her great power.

When someone would pray to Hecate, and that prayer touched her, she
responded quickly and in a positive manner. Hecate gave her help to whomever
she pleased, whenever she pleased, whether she was granting victory in times
of war, or simply sitting back and letting destruction prevail, each according to
her own particular whim. Hecate was also known for the help that she gave to competitors and fishermen; but what Hecate can give, Hecate can also, just
as easily, take away. That is the power of Hecate.

A great many depictions of Hecate exist. Hecate was the Goddess of the Dark
Moon, which is the third aspect of the moon. She was also the Goddess of the
blackest of nights, when the moon was hidden, and she was frequently
associated with deeds of darkness. She was also known as the Goddess of the
Triple Pathed Crossroads, and as the Queen of the Night. When her festivals
were held, at those places where the three roads meet, they became perfect
times for divination and for communication with the dead. Hecate's followers
frequently worshipped her in the darkness, with only the flames of their
torches lighting their way.

During the early part of the Middle Ages, Hecate's reputation as the Queen
of the Witches grew in power, and she was usually envisioned in the role of
a Crone, which role is archetypal of the feminine mystique. A popular belief
during that particular period in time was that if these magical women had
the power to bring life into this world then, as they aged, they would also
gain the power to take that life away. It was for that reason that Hecate
became, in no uncertain terms, the Greek Goddess of Magick, and since she
became the Goddess of Magick, the connection between Hecate, death and the
Underworld continued to grow stronger as time passed by. There even came a
time when people were so fearful of Hecate, that they committed blood-sacrifices
in order to remain in her good graces. Darker still, is the belief that Hecate was
the patroness of a demonic group of vampires known as the Empusae.

It was because of those particular reasons that Hecate became a Goddess of
enormous intensity. It almost seemed as though it happened overnight, but
from that time forward Hecate was worshipped regarding every kind of
witchcraft, sorcery and enchantment that there was. It was then, as well,
that Hecate became known as the patroness of Medea, and of many other witches.

The cult of Hecate was one of the strongest cults in the ancient pagan world
and it was during the 11th Century, C.E., that the Christian Church condemned
any person who made an offering to Hecate at one of those places where the three roads meet.

In modern times, Hecate is more often then not looked upon as a Moon Goddess
and as the Queen of the Witches, although Wiccans, Neo-Pagans, and a
variety of other Goddess groups still comprise many of her followers.

Hecate appears in what might possibly be the oldest of the Triple Goddess
formations, appearing in all three phases of the moon, but more often then
not as the dark moon. That, however, is only the beginning; because when it
comes to Triple Goddesses and Hecate, there is more; so much more.

Hecate is a truly amazing Goddess, because she has been in, not only so many
different Triple Goddess formations, and so many different types of Triple
Goddesses, but also because of the many ways in which she is related to the
magickal number three, triads, and things that happen to be tripled.

First, let us first look at some of the more simple triads that reflect the
triple nature of Hecate, which are indicative of her rulership over the
three phases of the moon, and of her connection to the magickal sacred
number three. Some of these deal with Hecate's association with the
three-way crossroads, with her celebration on November 16, which is the
Night of Hecate the Three-Formed, with Hecate's tarot associations, which
are threes and the High Priestess; and with the fact that Hecate represents
the third aspect of the moon.

These Triads also appear as the moon's cycles: as the new moon, the full
moon, and the dark moon; and in the various cycles of life: as the Maiden,
the Mother, and the Crone. She has appeared, as well, in the three realms:
which are the Sky, the Earth, and the Underworld.

What follows are perhaps the most interesting of all. They are the many ways
in which Hecate can be seen as a solitary Triple Goddess or, in a different
light, as a Goddess who is a part of a Triple Goddess formation. In Greece,
Hecate was one of many Goddesses who were used in a variety of different
combinations, comprising the original feminine trinity which ruled Heaven,
the Earth, and the Underworld. In another of her Triple Goddess trinities,
Hecate appeared as a singular Triple Goddess, in which she was a young girl,
a mother and a crone, which are the attributes that are connected to the
three stages of power in the Divine Feminine.

It is Hecate, as well, who flourishes in a Triple Moon trinity, which
continues to exist to this very day. In it, she becomes the Goddess of Three
Forms, with the virginal Artemis/Diana on Earth, as the crescent moon;
Selene, the pregnant mother, in the night sky, as the full moon; and herself
in the Underworld, as the Crone, or the Dark Moon. In her role as the Dark
Moon, Hecate rules the darkness as the Goddess of the Dead and the Queen of
the Night. A three-faced image of Hecate also existed, representing three
separate aspects, and it became known as a Triformis. The Romans referred
to this Triple Goddess formation as Diana Triformis, since it consisted of
Diana, Persephone and Hecate.

Hecate has also been associated with the Moon Goddess, Selene, who appears
to be very similar in form to Hecate. In fact, Selena is actually so similar
to Hecate, that their emblems and their triadic conceptions are almost
identical. More often then not, these two Goddesses were considered to be
interchangeable; and a prayer that was offered to one, was actually a prayer
that was offered to either of them. This particular duality, which consisted
of Hecate and Selene, had three heads, carried torches, and took on the role
of the overseer of the three-way crossroads. Another triadic concept was
known as Hecate Trevia, or Hecate of the Three Ways, and it was that image
which guarded the three-way crossroads for many thousands of years.

Even though the Greeks may have tried to stress Hecate's Crone or Underworld
aspects, people continued to worship her in the exact same manner that they
always had, which was at the places where the three roads meet. Hecate's
worshippers truly needed to be at those specific places, because it was
there that they were able to perform their rites of magick. That image of Hecate,
which stood at the three-way crossroads, looked in all three directions at
the same time. That only helped to give Hecate the reputation for being an
all seeing and all knowing Goddess.

Hecate also appeared in another Triple Goddess trinity, as the Goddess of
the Night, of the Crossroads, and of Life and Death. In earlier times, the
Greeks also worshipped another Triple Goddess trinity, which consisted of
Persephone as the Maiden, Demeter as the Mother, and Hecate as the Crone.
Hecate has also appeared in a variety of Triple Goddess formations in which
she had three heads, with each head being that of a different animal. The
first of these formations consisted of the heads of a dog, a horse, and a
serpent, while the second one consisted of the heads of a horse, a lion and
a dog. Several other triple goddess trinities also existed, and they had
three whole bodies attached to their heads. The third Triple Goddess trinity
depicted Hecate carrying three heads, with each head facing in a different
direction. In that Triple Goddess trinity, one of the heads was usually that
of an animal, most often a horse, a dog or a boar.

Hecate, Queen of the Night, Hecate, Triple Goddess of the Moon, Hecate Queen
of the Witches, and Hecate, Goddess of Magick: these are some of the names
that belong to this special Goddess since, believe it or not, they represent
but a small fraction of all of her names. Hecate was, is, and always will be
an extremely diverse and powerful Goddess, with the ability to do great good
or great evil.

Are there ever any dark nights when your dogs become extremely excited, but
you know, or think you know, that nothing is wrong and that no one is out
there? Will you wonder now? Will you? Could that possibly be that Hecate is
passing your way on one of her many rounds across the dark night sky? Maybe;
but if you ever find yourself at three-way crossroads, on the very blackest
of nights, it might be wise for you to pray that Hecate grants your favor;
and always remember to keep watching in every direction at all times.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
Week beginning December 30

Grammar key: Asterisks equal *italics*

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "We Americans are the best informed
people on earth as to the events of the last 24 hours," wrote historian
Will Durant some decades ago. "We are the not the best informed as to
the events of the last sixty centuries," he concluded. Today this describes
many Westerners, not just Americans. We are adrift in the Age of the
Short Attention Span -- a time when the lessons of the past are becoming
lost or irrelevant. But in 2011, I'll be rooting for you to elude this curse,
Capricorn. It's crucial for you to be in close touch with both the lessons
provided by the grand sweep of human civilization and by your own
personal history.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): "The third-rate mind is only happy when it is
thinking with the majority," said author A.A. Milne. "The second-rate mind
is only happy when it is thinking with the minority. The first-rate mind is
only happy when it is thinking." You will have an excellent chance to
cultivate that definition of a first-rate mind in 2011, Aquarius. According
to my reading of the astrological omens, life will be conspiring to
strengthen your brain. You will have everything going for you if you make
it your intention to sharpen your wits, use language more precisely, and
see the world with greater clarity and objectivity. To get the fun started,
make a list of what you could do to push your intelligence beyond its
current limits.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): "Anything you're good at contributes to
happiness," said philosopher Bertrand Russell. If I had my way, Pisces,
you'd write that on a note and tape it to your bathroom mirror for the
duration of 2011. I think it would raise your appreciation for the power
your personal gifts have to bestow blessings on both yourself and others.
And I hope it would inspire you to spend a lot of quality time finding out
all you can about what you're good at and deepening your capacity to do
what you're good at.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): "Just because everything is different doesn't
mean anything has changed," said writer Irene Peter. That should be
cautionary advice for you in 2011, Aries. From what I can tell, it will be
relatively easy for you to rearrange the way things look, but trickier to
transform them from the inside out. You will have to be vigilant to keep
from getting swept up in the giddiness of big talk at the expense of
practical action. You'll have to push hard to make sure that seductive
ideas are translated into concrete details. Can you do it? I think you can.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In 1967, John McCain was a U.S. Navy pilot
fighting in Vietnam. Shot down during a bombing mission, he was
captured and jailed in the notorious Hanoi Hilton prison camp, where he
was tortured. After being freed in 1973, he returned to the U.S. and
eventually launched a political career. When he ran for president in 2008,
his candidacy got an endorsement from an unlikely source: Tran Trong
Duyet, the Vietnamese prison commander who had supervised his torture.
In the coming months, Taurus, I expect you to experience a turnaround
that will have comparable poetic justice. I'm not sure how it will unfold.
Maybe an adversary will praise you, a person who wounded you will make
amends, or a force of nature that once opposed you will come over to
your side. Twenty-eleven will be a Year of Vindicating Reversals.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Can you finally escape the pain you got
imprinted with during adolescence? Is it a realistic possibility that you
could triumph over the conditioning you absorbed before you knew how
to talk? Do you have the power to do what few of us have done, which is
to get out from under the weight of the past, shed the inertia of your
memories, and live brave and free in the raw truth of NOW? If there will
ever in your life be a time when you can accomplish at least some of this
noble quest, Gemini, it will be in 2011.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

EXPLORING YOUR LONG-RANGE FUTURE

Would you like some inspiration as you muse and wonder about your
upcoming adventures in 2011?

In this week's EXPANDED AUDIO HOROSCOPES, I offer you Part One of a
long-term, in-depth exploration of your destiny in the coming months.

Part Two and Part Three will be available in the next two weeks.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Decades ago, the U.S. built a network of sleek
expressways to make it fast and easy for cars to travel between cities.
But like many of America's impressive engineering feats, this one took
little account of what the human soul might enjoy. Ugly buildings or
empty spaces surround many of those roads. Visually, the difference
between I-95 in Georgia and I-74 in Illinois is negligible. "The Interstate
highway system has made it possible," said Charles Kuralt, "to go from
sea to shining sea without seeing anything." You cannot afford to let this
be your operative metaphor in 2011, Cancerian. Your potential for rapid,
extensive progress is sizable, but it would be a mistake to barrel along
with your eyes fixed on the prize in the distance as you neglect what's
happening along the way. Be both global and local; romance the details as
you revel in the big picture.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Fixing people's teeth is one of Dr. Peter Kertesz's
specialties. The British dentist has a thriving business in London. Now and
then he's also called on to practice an exotic variation: animal dentistry.
Recently, he corrected the tooth problems of two tigers in a zoo. Other
species he has helped include elephants, whales, and pandas. In 2011,
Leo, I suggest you consider branching out like Dr. Kertesz. What would be
the equivalent, in your domain, of expanding the ways you use your
primary skills?

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): "What can I do with this eternal longing?"
That's the first line of "Assouf," a song by the African band Tinariwen.
During the rest of the tune, the singer never offers a definitive answer to
that plea, but as he tumbles and rumbles over the possibilities, the band
plays a lot of righteous music. I suggest that you make Tinariwen's cry
your question of the year in 2011. It will be an excellent use of your time
to meditate on how to call forth, nurture, and direct your ineffable,
insatiable yearning. (Hear the song: http://tinyurl.com/Assouf.)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In 2011, I believe you will have the chance to
weave your fortunes together with an abundance of allies who are good
for you. They will be your equals, they will share at least some of your
most important values, and they will respect you for who you are. That's
excellent news, right? My only worry is that you might shy away from the
demands that such invigorating collaborations will make on you. It would
be less work, after all, to fall back into reliance on more prosaic
relationships that don't ask so much of you. Please don't take the easy
way out, Libra. Rise to the occasion!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Michelangelo didn't think of himself as
primarily a painter. Sculpture was his first love. Yet in 1508 he was
coaxed into painting prodigious frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine
Chapel. As he worked for four years, covering 12,000 square feet with
sublime images, he sometimes complained and felt resentful. The project
took him away from two large sculptures he would have preferred to be
working on. He feared his enemies had convinced the Pope to give him
this task in order to demonstrate how mediocre his painting was. But
today his work at the Sistine Chapel is regarded as a masterpiece. I
suspect that in 2011 you may face a version of Michelangelo's dilemma,
Scorpio: being offered a job you don't consider your forte. It's quite
possible, however, that accepting this "diversion" will yield interesting
results.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): "When I became a man I put away
childish things," said Sagittarian author C.S. Lewis, "including the fear of
childishness and the desire to be very grown up." I suggest you take up
that attitude yourself in 2011, Sagittarius. One of your top assignments
in the coming months will be to play with greater intensity and more
frequency and a heightened imagination. If you want to achieve your adult
goals, you'll be wise to recreate your childhood wisdom on a higher
octave.

DailyOM - Sitting With Our Sadness
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

December 28, 2010
The Heart Of Humanity
Sitting With Our Sadness
When we are dealing with sadness it is important to really sit with it and have to courage to do so.

The last thing most of us want to hear or think about when we are dealing with profound feelings of sadness is that deep learning can be found in this place. In the midst of our pain, we often feel picked on by life, or overwhelmed by the enormity of some loss, or simply too exhausted to try and examine the situation. We may feel far too disappointed and angry to look for anything resembling a bright side to our suffering. Still, somewhere in our hearts, we know that we will eventually emerge from the depths into the light of greater awareness. Remembering this truth, no matter how elusive it seems, can help.

The other thing we often would rather not hear when we are dealing with intense sadness is that the only way out of it is through it. Sitting with our sadness takes the courage to believe that we can bear the pain and the faith that we will come out the other side. With courage, we can allow ourselves to cycle through the grieving process with full inner permission to experience it. This is a powerful teaching that sadness has to offer us the ability to surrender and the acceptance of change go hand in hand.

Another teaching of sadness is compassion for others who are in pain, because it is only in feeling our own pain that we can really understand and allow for someone else's. Sadness is something we all go through, and we all learn from it and are deepened by its presence in our lives. While our own individual experiences of sadness carry with them unique lessons, the implications of what we learn are universal. The wisdom we gain from going through the process of feeling loss, heartbreak, or deep disappointment gives us access to the heart of humanity.

So done with Mercury in Retro...Lost my Van Today...Sigh

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

I had enough of Mercury in Retro, the 30 th can't come quick enough...My
white Mini van is totaled, Lyle got into an accident...She's gone! He's fine, he was turning the corner left, a
woman on the same street back out of her driveway at the same time and
punched the car into the van turning smashing my right side, grill,
radiator, fender is off, air bags out, Lyle had his belt on, a cop
witnessed the accident so we're not at fault at least that' son the
papers....Got no excuse to by another car now. Sucks

Sniffs, a few days ago I was just saying I don't
want my lil van to wind up in a junk yard after 12 yrs this lil van has
taken us to Florida, Canada, all over the East coast, multi Pagan events for the past 9-10 yrs in NJ, man this sucks to see her so down.

Oh, first off, take a few deep breaths. Slowly. You're OK, Lyle's OK.
Now, to twist a well-used phrase around, Goddess never closes a door without
opening a window. You'll get another vehicle that will carry you to new
memories. Maybe one that's more energy efficient. Maybe more comfy.

The point is that everyone (except your van, of course) is OK.

On the 26th day of the month of Poseidon, Greek women gathered for the
Merry Womens Mysteries of Demeter and Kore, which later also honored
Dionysos. Women carried first fruits and the new wine of Dionysos from
Athens in procession to ...the open threshing floors. Lucius says it ends with a great feast. “Much wine was set out and the
tables were full of all the fields that are yielded by land and sea, save only those prohibited in the mysteries, I mean pomegranate and apple and
domestic fowls and eggs and red sea mullet and black tailed brayfish and shark. Men prepared the feast and then withdrew leaving the women to
alone enjoy themselves, consuming cakes in the shape of genitals and
trading obscenities, scurrilous jests and mutual abuse

Today's Goddess:. TAKEL Ginem (Malay)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:51 pm (PST)

Today's Goddess:. TAKEL
Ginem (Malay)

Themes: Banishing; Health; Protection; Harvest; Thankfulness; Kinship
Symbols: Root Crops

About Takel: In Malay, this Goddess supports the heavens with a pillar from the center of her creation, the earth. Takel is the supreme goddess of agriculture and its abundance. She comes to us at the end of the old year to keep us healthy and well provided for in the new.

To Do Today: Each December, people in Malay give thanks to the spirits for Takel's abundance and the success of families, and they pray for ongoing health, protection, and victory over any evils they may face. It is an example worth considering. Follow Malaysian custom and consume Takel's bounty today through luscious feasts. As you take the first slice or serving of any entree, set it aside for the goddess. Don't forget to include root crops, especially yams
or sweet potatoes, in your feast today. These are some of Takel's sacred foods, and they will fill your heart with an
abundance of love.

Later, after dinner has settled, dance in a joyful manner, being thankful for what you have instead of worrying about what
you don't. Takel will join you in that dance, and the energy it generates will empower the next year with health, prosperity,
and unity

Omaha Birth Chant

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:53 pm (PST)

I am calling to you, sun, moon, and stars,
all who walk the heavens, hear me!
A new life has come into our midst.
Make the path smooth until the first hill.
Make the path smooth until the second hill.
Make the path smooth until the third hill.
Make the path smooth until the fourth hill.
And make the path smooth even beyond that.
~Omaha Birth Chant

Birth is only the beginning of a life's story. Planting is only the beginning of the garden. Dreaming is just the beginning of fulfillment. There is a moment, just after birth, when all things seem possible. Then choices are made: first by the child's parents, later by the growing person. With each choice, possibilities disappear.
The path has many turnings, but it is a path. Even on the open sea, a boat goes in one direction.

There is no way to have everything. Choices are losses. Even not choosing is a choice. Our only freedom lies in making one choice rather than another.
