Dear Karen,

Republican elected officials across the country are using the pretext of
a budget crisis to push through an extremist agenda that does nothing to
fix our economy. You can see this in Madison, Wisconsin and you can see
it in Washington, DC.

For too long, conservatives have dominated the debate over the economy.
But now they've gone too far. And progressives need to stand up together
and say "Enough!"

That is why this Saturday we're joining with our friends at MoveOn and
dozens of progressive organizations in one massive, nationwide display
of progressive solidarity for Wisconsin.

We've joined with allies across the country to organize rallies in major
cities --- including every state capital --- this Saturday at noon.

We'll speak out to demand an end to the attacks on public services and
workers' rights across the country. We'll demand investment to create
decent jobs. And we'll demand that the rich and powerful pay their fair
share.

*Will you join us Saturday at noon? Sign up to join your local rally
here.

It's up to us to make sure the amazing energy in Wisconsin spreads to
the rest of the country, so that those who claim we can cut our way out
of the economic mess created by Wall Street don't win the day.

But to make that happen, progressives around the country need to stand
up right away and speak out against the far-right attacks on public
services and workers.

Republicans are launching Wisconsin-style attacks on workers in other
states. And in Washington, Republicans are threatening to shut the
government down next week unless Democrats agree to massive cuts to
everything from NPR to education to food aid for hungry children. This
is our chance to shift the debate and put Republicans like Wisconsin
Governor Scott Walker and his tea party friends in Washington on the
defensive.

We've come together with a huge coalition of progressive organizations
--- from the Netroots to the labor movement, environmental groups to
community organizations --- to back these rallies and make sure that the
folks in Wisconsin know that millions of people across the country are
standing with them.

*Can you join in at the local rally Saturday? Click here to find the
rally nearest you and RSVP.

Do Love Spells Work?
By Doug Brinlee

When it comes to the belief in modern day magic and spells, there are two camps; the believers and the skeptics. The skeptics do not believe in the hocus pocus and practices of today’s pagans and witches. In turn, the pagans and witches accept magic as readily as we accept the belief that gas prices will be higher in another month.

Spells for love, success, luck, and a number of others that are beneficial are still performed by witches, although they claim to be white witches and their spells are harmless. Love spells are as popular as ever and are some of the easier spells one can cast. Beginners can do it or you can pay a professional witch to do it for you. But do love spells really work? Or are they just as the skeptics claim; a lot of mumbo-jumbo? If you are seeking love and you want some additional help in that department, here is some information you might find helpful before you get your chalk and candles.

What Love Spells Don’t Do

The days of spells that specifically target a person to bind them to the spellcaster’s will are over. Or they may still exist only in the latest online rpg. Today’s spells do not twist another’s willpower and freedom. They do not put the target in a trance or force them to do anything that would normally be against their better judgment.

So love spells do not target individuals. That would be in violation of one of the rules in witch etiquette. The rule states: Do not bind another being unless you are willing to be bound. So you cannot use a spell to get that hot guy in the office next to you to fall in love with you.

Why Love Spells Don’t Work

Even witches and magic practitioners agree that spells do not always work. Sometimes they may not work they way that you want them to. One of the main reasons that spells don’t work is because of belief. Do you really believe in magic? Belief is very important for anything to work. If you have to do a project at work, it is much harder if you do not believe that you can do it. If you are playing a round of golf and you do not believe that you are very good, you will likely play a lousy game. Belief is essential if you want something to work.

So let’s say that you do believe in magic or are at least willing to give it a shot. Why won’t a spell work? It could be several things. One of them is concentration. It takes practice and experience to attain the level of concentration needed to enable a spell to work. Spells have to have energy built up in them and then released at just the right time. If you do not have the proper frame of mind, you can’t do it.

Motivation is another cause for love spells not working. You need to do some deep inner thinking before casting a love spell. Ask yourself why you are casting it. Are you seeking to hurt someone else? Are you trying to bind someone to you? Or is it truly to find love? Only when your motivation is true will the spell succeed. Selfish, greedy, or hurtful motivations are counter-productive to love spells and are a sure-fire way to get them to fail.

Timing and energy are other reasons for the failure of a love spell. Cycles of the moon play a big factor in practicing magic, particularly love spells. When the moon is waning, it is at its least power which means there is less power to draw on for the spell. If you want to cast a powerful love spell, you should wait until the moon if full and at its peak.
In love spells, part of the energy also comes from within you. You need to feel vibrant and full of energy when casting love spells. If you are sick, tired, or just don’t feel like you have much energy, then the spell will be a very weak one (if it works at all).

Why Love Spells Work

Practitioners of magic swear that if done properly using positive energy, love spells do work. When the witch or caster has enough energy, the moon is in the right phase, and their motivation is good, the spell has a likely chance of success.

One thing to help a love spell is to make a list of what type of person you are looking for. Without naming a specific someone, give details with pros and cons, likes and dislikes. This narrows down the focus of the spell and allows the energy to find someone that matches what you are looking for.

Now if you do not really believe in magic but are seeking love and willing to give it a shot, there are some things you need to keep in mind. The first is that love comes naturally. Everyone, at some point in their life, will likely find love. But first you have to love yourself. If you do not like yourself, this creates negative energy that disrupts what you are trying to accomplish.

Witches say that love spells work for those who really want to find love. If you are just messing around, you won’t get the best results. But if you are really sincere about finding love, and think about how much you want it when you cast the spell, then it will likely be successful.

Lastly, you need to prepare yourself for love. This means that you have to do some of the work. You can’t expect a spell to do everything. Clean yourself up some. Pay attention to your appearance. Buy some new clothes that will catch someone’s attention. If your hair is a mess, go get it styled. Start wearing a different perfume. If you want to have people over to your place, make sure it is clean so it will impress them. It is hard to find a soulmate if you live in a dump. Do yourself a favor and get yourself together in order to make the love spell work easier.

hi. im new too. ive been questioning religion for a while which prompted me to begin searching. ive seen alot of pagan references in alot of what i read and whatch. my fiance and i took a trip to the bookstore one day and i found myself looking at wicca and witchcraft titles and found this book called paganism an introduction to earth centered religions. the statement of it being earth centered caught my eye and i find that i enjoy reading the book and can agree with it on many levels. i was wondering if you belong to a coven or pagan group at all. i am looking for a group to join myself so that i can learn more than what books can teach me.

I actually bought the "Paganism for Dummies" book years ago, but was rather self-conscious about proclaiming myself to be part of this culture because of the labels and stereotypes that surround it. I don't know if that book is accurate or not, but I feel better about taking part in this type of culture because I now feel more drawn to this sort of thing (that's the best way I can describe it).

Help needed for a ritual

Hiya guys,

I have been working with a magickal group for a year and a day and as part of my training I have to organise an "end of training" ritual and I'd like it to be pretty awesome and about coming to the end of the full circle. And ideas? My friend has said that as we were given elemental gifts at the beginning of our training we should give something back, which would be cool.

What have other people done?

I'm new

Posted by: "Peggy" momsalittleoff@gmail.com   momsalittleoff

Thu Feb 24, 2011 1:34 pm (PST)

I'm not just new to the group, I'm also new to the Pagan path. I spent the last 32 years as a Mormon and just recently left that life and my husband and moved to another State. I went from being isolated, sick with out of control diabetes and firbromyalgia, and depressed to living with my adult daughter and a complete change in lifestyle. In the last 6 months I started exploring the pagan beliefs and lost 40 lbs. I now have a nice little apartment with a herb and vegetable garden growing. I've started up my long dropped knitting business as well as started knitting for a charity group nearby. My most recent surprise is that I believe that I may have the qualities of an empath. I've been picking up from my daughter as well as friends and even people I don't even know.
My daughter has been helping me learn the basics of shielding as well as finding ways to draw in positive energy to replace negative. The crazy thing is that I've had the feeling that I may be empathetic for years, but never told anyone because I wasn't sure I believed in it.

I look forward to meeting other people on the group and learning as much as I can.

Wiccan decision making by Doreen Valiente-

Posted by: "jessica balding" beautishianlove@yahoo.co.uk   beautishianlove

Thu Feb 24, 2011 1:34 pm (PST)

 Any act of magic requires us to make a number of decisions, these can be related to the 5 elements. These questions can be meditated on, as well as using thought processes;

1.) Earth. What do I want to happen in the material world?
2.) Air. Which is the best way to achieve it?
3.) Water. Do I really want this to happen?
4.) Spitit~ Alligning one's self to the Gods. Is it in accordance with the greatest good?
5.) Fire. The decision process is complete; we give it our energy and make it happen.

This may seem simple, but this works really well when you find yourself at a cross-roads when trying to come to a decision!

Anthropologist Mircea Eliade, in his book " the sacred and profane" describes the reaction of a chief of the Native American Wanapum tribe towards western attitudes to agriculture and mining;

"Should a knife tear my mother's bosom?
Then when I die she will not take me to her bosom to rest.
You ask me to dig for stone!
Shall I dig under her skin for bones?
Then when I die I cannot enter her body again.
You ask me to cut grass and make hay and sell it,
and be rich like white men!
But how dare I cut off my mother's hair."

Just felt like adding this!

The Primitive Conservative Psyche VS Mother Rule

If you're a Goddess Advocate read this. It explains the need for
Mother Rule and why the paradigm shift is coming - but we must

*PETER MICHAELSON FOR BUZZFLASH AT TRUTHOUT*

The battles against the anti-democratic Right in Wisconsin, Ohio,
Indiana, and elsewhere are being fought to prevent conservatives from
remaking America in the image of their moral worldview.

Berkeley professor and author George Lakoff advises us to see more
deeply into the psychology of this crisis. We need to understand, he
writes, how the conservative belief in individual responsibility, to the
exclusion of social responsibility, is based on the model of the
strict-father family.

According to this model, the father's role in the family as Decider and
moral authority is required to teach kids right from wrong.
Conservatives claim that father's superior moral guidance is needed,
along with physical punishment if necessary, so kids can develop the
discipline to become morally responsible adults.

Why do conservatives think that father knows best? Psychoanalysis can
provide insight.

According to psychoanalysis, the superego, also known as the inner
critic or inner aggression, typically assumes an authoritarian, even a
tyrannical, stance within our psyche. The superego is an aggressive
drive that can function as an inner disciplinarian. However, it is
usually negative and irrational. In less evolved individuals, the
superego often decides what is right and wrong. But it makes this
distinction for the sake of fulfilling its function, which is to
exercise inner authority. It is not interested in, nor can it even
distinguish, what is truly right or wrong.

In their psychological naiveté, however, conservatives interpret the
oppressive, impersonal superego as a guiding voice of inner conscience.

When people are inwardly weak and unaware, the superego can have the run
of their psyche and dominate their personality. Often, it is critical,
ruthless, mocking, and unforgiving. It frequently overpowers what little
sense of autonomy and personal authority many people possess.

Unwittingly, conservatives plant their soul in the impersonal authority
of the superego. Hence, they are enamored of the power of the
impersonal, as evidenced by their emotional alignment with corporations,
the market, and the military. These three impersonal forces impose their
values and authority without interference from citizens, as when the
alleged self-regulating "invisible hand" of the marketplace destroys the
environment.

Conservatives distrust government because it is personal, not
impersonal. Government is the voice and protector of the people. But the
people are not supposed to have a voice. Only some "higher" impersonal
law or representative of that law (father figure) is allowed to decide
the right approach to life's big issues. Just as children of
conservatives must submit passively to the father, we adults are not
supposed to have a mind of our own. We are not expected to grow in human
consciousness.

Ideally, democratic governments express human consciousness at its best.
This is the wise guiding authority that represents and protects us. But
human consciousness is a discredited term in the conservative lexicon.
That's because on an inner level, the consciousness of rigid
conservatives is frozen in place. Global warming can't defrost it
because "higher" authority hasn't factored in that game-changing
scenario. In addition, the superego, the conservative mind's Decider, is
hostile to our progress and completely indifferent to our suffering and
self-defeat.

Hence, the superego has no capacity for empathy. Yet empathy is a
quality of higher consciousness, as well as the basis of American
democracy. Empathy is built into the principle of one person, one vote.
When each person's vote counts, each person is respected and valued.
Democracy is an evolved system that practices equality and justice.
Democracy is supportive of each person being strong and happy, and it's
not threatened when labor collectives possess bargaining rights. When it
comes to power, the more the merrier.

Conservatives believe the government should not provide health care,
environmental protection, and other forms of public service. That gives
too much respect and power to everybody. They rationalize their lack of
empathy by claiming that the poor deserve their poverty because they are
responsible for their own failings. But the poor haven't necessarily
failed. Perhaps they're doing well with the poor cards they were dealt.
We're the lesser ones if our hearts are closed. So we have no business
being judgmental. But the superego's specialty is being judgmental.

Conservatives' mental gymnastics for disrespecting the poor enable them
to practice guilt-free ruthlessness while feeling morally superior,
which is precisely the stance adopted by the superego. The superego
clings to its power like a dictator as it tries to keep down human
consciousness. Meanwhile, the conservative embrace of individualism is
derived from the righteousness and arrogance of the superego as a power
onto itself.

The conservative mentality rests on this primitive aspect of human
nature. How tragic for America and the world if it were to prevail!

Self-knowledge is power, and knowledge of the oppressor's inner
corruption is power to the people.
