Get Ready for Beltane!: Day 4: Beltane Rites and Rituals

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sat Apr 9, 2011 6:35 am (PDT)

Get Ready for Beltane!

Day 4: Beltane Rites and Rituals
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
For most Pagans and Wiccans, Beltane is cause for big celebration. It's the beginning of spring, we're all feeling a bit randy, and we're happy to get out of the house and play in the dirt for a while. Naturally, it's a good excuse to have a big celebration. The Maypole dance is a traditional way to celebrate Beltane, as is the bonfire. You can try either of these rituals, or you can focus on a goddess ritual or family abundance ceremony. We'll also look at some Beltane prayers, and you can submit your own to the site if you like!

In addition to fire and fertility, this time of year is a popular one for handfastings. More and more Pagan couples are opting to have handfasting ceremonies instead of a regular wedding. We'll talk about the history of handfastings, how to make sure your ceremony goes off without a hitch, and some great ideas for magical handfasting favors for your guests!

Rituals and Ceremonies
How to Celebrate with a Maypole Dance

Although you'll need quite a few people to hold a Maypole dance, it really is worth the effort. It's a lot of fun, and it's a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. Did you know that at one point Maypole dancing was banned by puritanical church leaders? Yep - they decided it was too sexual... after all, the Maypole is a big phallic symbol covered in ribbons! Have a Maypole Dance

Hold a Beltane Bonfire Ritual

The Beltane bonfire is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years. The fire was more than a big pile of logs and some flame. It was a place where the entire community gathered around -- a place of music and magic and dancing and lovemaking. It was customary to light the fire on May Eve (the last night of April) and allow it to burn until the sun went down on May 1. This ceremony is designed for a group, and includes a symbolic union of the May Queen and the King of the Forest. Beltane Bonfire Ritual

Family Abundance Rite

If you have small children, and you're uncomfortable with them being present while you celebrate the more phallic aspects of Beltane (or you don't want them leaping over a blazing fire), you may want to try this ceremony instead. The Beltane sabbat is also about abundance, in many forms, so celebrate that part of the holiday with your young ones if you prefer. Family Abundance Ritual

Honoring the Sacred Feminine with a Goddess Rite

A number of individual cults existed in pre-Christian Europe which honored mother goddesses of their own. In Rome, the cult of Cybele was huge, and the mystery traditions of Isis soon took on a mother-goddess status. Take advantage of the blooming of spring, and use this time to celebrate the archetype of the mother goddess, and honor your own female ancestors and friends. Goddess Ritual

Beltane Prayers
Honoring the Gods at Beltane

Looking for prayers to celebrate Beltane? Here are a few you may wish to add in to your upcoming rites and rituals.

* Am Beannachadh Bealltain
* Prayer to Cernunnos
* A Thanks to the Earth Mother
* Honoring the May Queen
* Blessing to Protect the Herd
* Prayer for the Gods of the Forest
Have an original Beltane prayer of your own you'd like to share? Use our Readers Respond feature to send it in, and it might appear on the website! Share Your Beltane Prayers

Handfastings: An Old Tradition Made New
Handfasting Ceremonies

Handfasting was common centuries ago in the British Isles, and then vanished for a while. Now, however, it's seeing a rising popularity among Wiccan and Pagan couples who are interested in tying the knot. Find out where this custom came from, and what brought it back.

* Handfasting History
* How to Have a Magical Ceremony
* Handfasting Favors for Your Guests
* Sample Handfasting Ceremony
* Jumping the Broom: Besom Weddings
* Handfasting Bonfires: What You Need to Know
* Choosing a Handfasting Cake

Tomorrow: Beltane Magic

Beltane is all about fertility, sex, magic, fire, and more sex. We'll talk about fertility customs from around the world, sex magic and the Great Rite, as well as some magical ideas you can incorporate into your Beltane celebrations.

Fw: DailyOM: Underneath the Noise

DailyOM - Hearing the Whisper
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

April 8, 2011
Underneath the Noise
Hearing the Whisper
Sometimes it is the softness of a whisper that is needed the most.

You may have noticed that if you want to speak to someone in a noisy, crowded room, the best thing to do is lean close and whisper. Yelling in an attempt to be louder than the room’s noise generally only hurts your throat and adds to the chaos. Similarly, that still, small voice within each of us does not try to compete with the mental chatter on the surface of our minds, nor does it attempt to overpower the volume of the raucous world outside. If we want to hear it, no matter what is going on around us or even inside us, we can always tune in to that soft voice underneath the surrounding noise.

It is generally true that the more insistent voices in our heads delivering messages that make us feel panicky or afraid are of questionable authority. They may be voices we internalized from childhood or from the culture, and as such they possess only half-truths. Their urgency stems from their disconnectedness from the center of our being, and their urgency is what catches our attention. The other voice that whispers reassurances that everything is fundamentally okay simply delivers its message with quiet confidence. Once we hear it, we know it speaks the truth. Generally, once we have heard what it has to say, a powerful sense of calm settles over our entire being, and the other voices and sounds, once so dominant, fade into the background, suddenly seeming small and far away.

We may find that our own communications in the world begin to be influenced by the quiet certainty of this voice. We may be less inclined to indulge in idle chatter as we become more interested in maintaining our connection to the whisper of truth that broadcasts its message like the sound of the wind shaking the leaves of a tree. As we align ourselves more with this quiet confidence, we become an extension of the whisper, penetrating the noise of the world and creating more peace, trust, and confidence.

8th Annual Midgard Festival Basic Schedule

8th Annual Midgard Festival Highlights

May 20 at
6:00pm - May 23

Raven’s Knoll

            Here is a
basic breakdown of what will be going on at the 8th Annual Midgard
Festival this year.

Theme for this Year:  Ancestors

            We don’t usually
have a Major Theme. This year we decided to focuss on Ancestors. This was
brough on partially with me looking into my ancestry and discovering a bunch of
stuff.

            We
encourage all participants to bring something that represents your ancestors
for the ancestors altar. Warning do not bring things for the altar that you
wish returned. There will be a ritual on Sunday where the altar and items on it
will be sacrificed.

            We
encourage you to find out more information about your ancestors. Ask your
parents, grand parents etc. If you are adopted find out more information about
their line as they have become your family. These can be discussed with
stories, songs, or at the Sumble etc.

Workshops:

For years we avoided having too many workshops and having
participants choose between or another they wish to attend. We plan on continuing
on this path. For this reason there are plenty of workshops but we try and only
program one at a time. Already the score card is starting to be filled. If you
wish to add a workshop please contact Erik.

Fire and Dancing:

I look forward to dancing around that fire a bunch more than
I did last year. There is a fire each night for us to enjoy.

Friday:

Sumble:

            This is a
Heathen based event We will have a Sumbel on Friday. If you wish to add a
bottle of mead that would be great but you being there and sharing is more
important. I will be directing the Sumble.

Saturday:

Main Ritual:  Runatyr Kindred as once again agreed to
do the Main Ritual for Midgard this year. This is a wonderful Heathen based ritual.
Thanks RK.

Feast:  Beef, Vegan Stone Soup and Potluck:  As usual we will be having a feast on
Saturday after main ritual.  We were
thinking of getting a pig for this year but for now we agreed the logistics of
it is not feasible. Maybe next year.

            We will
however have 50lbs of Sirloin Tip Roast
which we will slowly cook on the BBQ once again this year. This is included as part
of registration. If you are vegetarians and vegans you save $5 on registration
as you will obviously not have meat.

Vegan Stone Soup. A way to ensure that
all participate in the feast and that the needs of vegetarians and vegans are
met we have a Vegetable Stone Soup. We ask that all participants bring
vegetables to share with others. When you walk by the pots give it a stir.

            Because we
all share at Midgard we ask that all participants bring something to add to the
Potluck which is part of the feast. I
love the variety and delicious foods we all share every year.

Sunday:

Ancestors Ritual:  We will be holding a sacred ritual to ancestors on Sunday. More details to come but it
will be well worth participating in it. As mentioned above bring items for the ancestors
ultar.

Fireworks:  Bring store bought fireworks to Midgard. We ask that you do not randomly
set them off but instead hand them over to security which will arrange a
wounderful display for us. The more people bring the bigger and longer the
show.

Bardic Competition:  As usual our bardic winners get to bring
the plaque home for the year and return it for the following year.  This is always entertaining and fun to
participate in.

Monday:  Monday is usually a relax day for all
participants. Apart from workshops we have nothing major planned for that day. Those
attending seem to prefer it that way.
