Subject: The Green Thing

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. They were recycled.

But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.

But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in a 220 volt energy gobbling machine - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. They didn't have air conditioning or electric stoves with self cleaning ovens. They didn't have battery operated toys, and computers, and telephones.

Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They used hand operated clippers to trim the shrubs. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people walked or took the streetcar or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad when they lament how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

What was the title of the post? I save most of the pagan list posts and
would like to make sure I didn't save a problem one.

Beltane Sugar Pie...ENJOY

Posted by: "Tina Carreon" nbox4tc1212@yahoo.com   nbox4tc1212

Wed Apr 27, 2011 5:33 pm (PDT)

Beltane Sugar Pie~
From about the middle of spring up through the harvest season, pies are
wonderful celebratory foods. However, there's a difference between a "summer"
pie and an "autumn" pie; usually the autumn pies will incorporate heavy foods
(like potato, pumpkin, or sweet potatoes) while spring and early summer tend to
be better matched w...ith pies made of summer fruits like strawberries and
blueberries. However, there is one type of pie often overlooked during this time
of year: The CREAM pie. Milk and dairy may have already had their highlight in
late winter and early spring (with Imbolc and Ostara), but in the old world this
time of year still had milk available, and this is as good a time as any to
enjoy it!
Beltane--May Day--is a perfect holiday to present a particular cream pie dusted
with nutmeg. It's nice and milky and filling, and fits well with the Beltane
lustiness and intentional gluttony even though it is comparatively bland in
color beside all the festive red party foods that often adorn a Beltane table.

Ingredients:
 1 cup whole milk
1 cup rich cream
1/2 cup butter
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
Ground nutmeg
Baked pie shell
 Directions:
Melt butter in a wide pan on medium heat. Add the milk to the cornstarch in a
separate bowl, letting the cornstarch soak up the milk before adding more; make
sure it's an even mixture when all the milk is added. Add this milk and cream
mixture to the butter in the pan along with the sugar, and stir it constantly
until it thickens. (It will probably start to boil and then become thick--you'll
know it when it's thick enough because it will attain a pudding-like
consistency.) Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla. Pour it into the pie
shell. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Once it's set, it can be eaten still warm from the
pot or it can be chilled to set more firmly and served cold.

 Yield: 1 9- or 10-inch pie

Fw: DailyOM: An Invitation to Love

Posted by: "Beth Patterson" purrrpaws4444@yahoo.com   purrrpaws4444

Wed Apr 27, 2011 7:53 pm (PDT)

Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

April 27, 2011
An Invitation to Love
Angel Meditation

A meditation with your angels can provide a new gentleness into your normal meditation routine.

Though your host of spirit guides encompasses many diverse beings, all of which willingly watch over you, meditating with angels can be a uniquely insightful experience. The angels stationed at your side are both powerful and knowledgeable—they possess a limitless understanding of your needs and desires, your strengths and weaknesses, and your purpose. However, angels take an active part in our lives only when invited to do so. Meditation allows you to make contact with your angels and lovingly request that they participate actively in your day-to-day life.

To begin, retreat to a solitary place where you won't be distracted by concerns. Incense and candlelight may aid you in achieving a meditative state but are not necessary. However, laying an image of an angel, angel statue, or item symbolizing your angels before you can focus your thoughts. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply, and let yourself relax. When you feel peaceful, invite your angels from the highest of light to sit with you as you meditate. Mentally repeat your request and reiterate that this time together is important to you. Then, in your mind's eye, visualize a bright-white light floating above you. As you breathe, draw this light first into the crown of your head and then into the whole of your physical self. Allow this light to spread through your arms and hands, your core, and your lower body. Repeat this integration of illumination with a violet light.

Once again, ask your angels to be with you. Let the stillness surrounding you enter your soul, and open your heart to your angel guides. If they wish to communicate a message, they will do so now. Allow them to wrap their wings around you and infuse you with their bountiful love. Breathe them in as you did the light. As the meditation draws to a close, you may feel a presence, fluttering wings, or billowing fabric, or you may see an angel in your mind's eye. Thank them for providing you with love and light, and being with you as you meditated. If you don't sense or feel anything, there is no cause for worry—you can be certain your angels are with you. Don't be surprised if you start to see signs throughout the day that your angels are near, perhaps a feather at your doorstep. As you practice this meditation, you will become increasingly adept at recognizing when your angels are near and sensing their presence.

Dee's name needs to go right back in. It seems like every time we
make some headway for him, his body fights us back! His blood
chemistries are all messed up and he's still not producing red and
white cells like he should. Required several transfusions yesterday
just to keep his blood count up in an acceptable range and of course
he's very tired. Will not eat or drink, did not even want us messing
with the feeding tube (we start force feeding tomorrow if he still
isn't willing to eat and they'll start IV fluids if he won't drink).
At this point, the doc and surgeon aren't certain if it's nerve damage
(in which case he can no longer identify what is happening to him as
pain, only as bizarre twinges which he of course promptly ignores) or
some other issue. Looks like another surgery might be in order and if
they have to do that, there's really not enough bowel loop left to
save.

Oh, and work called. They want their profiler back. If you haven't
been watching the news, they have a probable serial killer up in Long
Island and Dee's been assigned to work the profile for the case. They
won't put him in the field (or at least they damned well better not)
and the docs did limit the amount of time he can spend on files at the
computer or in conference and web calls but still...and I got nowhere
arguing with him. Someone has to be the voice of the victims, social
responsibility, blah blah blah.

I don't need anything. The new chemo regimen is effective, though
powerful on the side effects, but it works slowly. I'm supposed to
take my last loading dose at the end of the month and then I go on a
small maintenance dosage. We've been told we ought to have the power
chair, which the insurance did finally approve, within ten business
days of this past Tuesday. If not, Dorie and Mr. Shapeshifter will
chew some collective ass until I get it. So many things on hold until
I do!

Dorie could use a bit of a lift as well. The nurse practitioner back
in Louisiana put her on Effexor without researching its proper use and
without using proper diagnostics. This is a powerfully addictive
anti-depressant with several severe side effects as well as a dreadful
withdrawal process. She has a generalized anxiety disorder and PTSD
so this drug shouldn't even have been used on her in the first place.
My doc, who is a good one, put her on the withdrawal regimen and onto
a new medication, BuSpar, which at least has minimal side effects and
does treat anxiety even if it's an off label use. Meanwhile, however,
she's really having a hard time with the discontinuation syndrome.
There's nothing to do but to keep taking the new medication and hope
that the Effexor problems aren't permanent.

Thanks, guys!
