I'm Back!

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Nov 22, 2010 8:48 am (PST)

Well, the past two weeks have been very busy for me. My daughter's wedding was lovely, and I'll post pics when I can.

My other daughter's surgery went as best as could be expected. This is her fourth surgery for kidneystones. They just won't go away. She has changed her diet, the beverages she drinks (no sugar) her salt consumption, and still the stones keep growing. If she doesn't recuperate well this time around, I may be dividing my time between Florida and Georgia for a time.

It's good to be home and to start posting again.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Aromatherapy Tip

Easy to make and great for this time of year.

A homemade inhaler, that is very easy to stick in a pocket or purse
is made by simply saving an empty chap stick tube. Wash out with hot
soap and water to remove all traces of chap stick and let air dry.
Next put a piece of cotton in the inhaler and measure the drops of
essential oils for your blend directly on the cotton.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"We do not want riches, but we want to train our children right. Riches would do us no good. We could not take them with us to the other world. We do not want riches, we want peace and love."

-- Red Cloud, OGLALA LAKOTA

The Elders say that what is important is peace and love. To have material things is okay, but if not, that's okay too. To have peace and love is more important than anything material. Our children will see the value of peace and love only if adults show they are a priority. Too often we think we can offer material things and they will replace the time spent with our children. But the most important way to give our children peace and love is to spend time with them.

My Creator, give me Your peace and love today.

The Oyez Project

Heres your opportunity to find out everything about the U. S. Supreme Court, the nation's highest court. Today's feature supplies information on the Court, its history, past and present cases that have and are appearing on the docket, the justices, including current and previous ones, a 'Virtual Tour' and even podcasts of the oral arguments. This site definitely gives you the opportunity to experience the Supreme Court and its workings.

One interesting note "The OYEZ Project began in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field in the late 1980s as the Chicago Cubs continued to break the hearts of its many diehard fans." Unfortunately, the visitor cannot step up to the plate but it is interesting how projects come into being!

The War Prayer by Mark Twain

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Nov 22, 2010 9:09 am (PST)

The War Prayer
by Mark Twain
It was a time of great and exalting excitement. The country was up in arms, the war was on, in every breast burned the holy fire of patriotism; the drums were beating, the bands playing, the toy pistols popping, the bunched firecrackers hissing and spluttering; on every hand and far down the receding and fading spread of roofs and balconies a fluttering wilderness of flags flashed in the sun; daily the young volunteers marched down the wide avenue gay and fine in their new uniforms, the proud fathers and mothers and sisters and sweethearts cheering them with voices choked with happy emotion as they swung by; nightly the packed mass meetings listened, panting, to patriot oratory which stirred the deepest deeps of their hearts, and which they interrupted at briefest intervals with cyclones of applause, the tears running down their cheeks the while; in the churches the pastors preached devotion to flag and country, and invoked the God of Battles beseeching His aid in our good cause in outpourings of fervid eloquence which moved every listener. It was indeed a glad and gracious time, and the half dozen rash spirits that ventured to disapprove of the war and cast a doubt upon its righteousness straightway got such a stern and angry warning that for their personal safety's sake they quickly shrank out of sight and offended no more in that way.
Sunday morning came -- next day the battalions would leave for the front; the church was filled; the volunteers were there, their young faces alight with martial dreams -- visions of the stern advance, the gathering momentum, the rushing charge, the flashing sabers, the flight of the foe, the tumult, the enveloping smoke, the fierce pursuit, the surrender! Then home from the war, bronzed heroes, welcomed, adored, submerged in golden seas of glory! With the volunteers sat their dear ones, proud, happy, and envied by the neighbors and friends who had no sons and brothers to send forth to the field of honor, there to win for the flag, or, failing, die the noblest of noble deaths. The service proceeded; a war chapter from the Old Testament was read; the first prayer was said; it was followed by an organ burst that shook the building, and with one impulse the house rose, with glowing eyes and beating hearts, and poured out that tremendous invocation:
*God the all-terrible! Thou who ordainest! Thunder thy clarion and lightning thy sword!*
Then came the "long" prayer. None could remember the like of it for passionate pleading and moving and beautiful language. The burden of its supplication was, that an ever-merciful and benignant Father of us all would watch over our noble young soldiers, and aid, comfort, and encourage them in their patriotic work; bless them, shield them in the day of battle and the hour of peril, bear them in His mighty hand, make them strong and confident, invincible in the bloody onset; help them to crush the foe, grant to them and to their flag and country imperishable honor and glory --
An aged stranger entered and moved with slow and noiseless step up the main aisle, his eyes fixed upon the minister, his long body clothed in a robe that reached to his feet, his head bare, his white hair descending in a frothy cataract to his shoulders, his seamy face unnaturally pale, pale even to ghastliness. With all eyes following him and wondering, he made his silent way; without pausing, he ascended to the preacher's side and stood there waiting. With shut lids the preacher, unconscious of his presence, continued with his moving prayer, and at last finished it with the words, uttered in fervent appeal, "Bless our arms, grant us the victory, O Lord our God, Father and Protector of our land and flag!"
The stranger touched his arm, motioned him to step aside -- which the startled minister did -- and took his place. During some moments he surveyed the spellbound audience with solemn eyes, in which burned an uncanny light; then in a deep voice he said:
"I come from the Throne -- bearing a message from Almighty God!" The words smote the house with a shock; if the stranger perceived it he gave no attention. "He has heard the prayer of His servant your shepherd, and will grant it if such shall be your desire after I, His messenger, shall have explained to you its import -- that is to say, its full import. For it is like unto many of the prayers of men, in that it asks for more than he who utters it is aware of -- except he pause and think.
"God's servant and yours has prayed his prayer. Has he paused and taken thought? Is it one prayer? No, it is two -- one uttered, the other not. Both have reached the ear of Him Who heareth all supplications, the spoken and the unspoken. Ponder this -- keep it in mind. If you would beseech a blessing upon yourself, beware! lest without intent you invoke a curse upon a neighbor at the same time. If you pray for the blessing of rain upon your crop which needs it, by that act you are possibly praying for a curse upon some neighbor's crop which may not need rain and can be injured by it.
"You have heard your servant's prayer -- the uttered part of it. I am commissioned of God to put into words the other part of it -- that part which the pastor -- and also you in your hearts -- fervently prayed silently. And ignorantly and unthinkingly? God grant that it was so! You heard these words: 'Grant us the victory, O Lord our God!' That is sufficient. the *whole* of the uttered prayer is compact into those pregnant words. Elaborations were not necessary. When you have prayed for victory you have prayed for many unmentioned results which follow victory--*must* follow it, cannot help but follow it. Upon the listening spirit of God fell also the unspoken part of the prayer. He commandeth me to put it into words. Listen!
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it -- for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen.
(*After a pause.*) "Ye have prayed it; if ye still desire it, speak! The messenger of the Most High waits!"
It was believed afterward that the man was a lunatic, because there was no sense in what he said.
Twain apparently dictated it around 1904-05; it was rejected by his publisher, and was found after his death among his unpublished manuscripts. It was first published in 1923 in Albert Bigelow Paine's anthology, Europe and Elsewhere.
The story is in response to a particular war, namely the Philippine-American War of 1899-1902, which Twain opposed. See Jim Zwick's page "Mark Twain on the Philippines" for more of Twain's writings on the subject.

Feng Shui Tip

Daily Feng Shui Tip by Ellen Whitehurst for Monday, November 22

The precious gem or stone most associated with this month of November is the venerable and mysterious Topaz. This stone has been around for at least 2000 years and has been called one of the gemstones that formed the foundations of the twelve gates to the Holy City of Jerusalem. These gems are often referred to as 'apocalyptic' in their nature as they're believed to hold miraculous protective powers. When worn or carried with that same intention, this jewel is believed to keep anyone safe from enemies, the evil eye, harassment and harm. According to ancient alchemy and mysticism, the topaz holds a cooling or antiseptic effect while also being believed to be able to dispel sadness and anger. Sleeping with it somewhere on or close to the skin apparently also allays nighttime fears. Some legends share that a man who wears a topaz will grow more handsome and intelligent while a woman will grow more fertile and happy. More handsome, smarter, happier with a bun in the oven and an enthusiastic wife? Man, unless you're loopy, you ought to get thee to a jeweler!

Elder's meditation of the Day--November 22

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Mon Nov 22, 2010 5:34 pm (PST)

Elder's Meditation of the Day - November 22

"It's the most precious thing...to know absolutely where you belong. There's a whole emotional wrapping-around-of-you here. You see the same rock, tree, road, clouds, sun -- you develop a nice kind of intimacy with the world around you. To be intimate is to grow, to learn...[it] is absolutely fulfilling. Intimacy, that's my magic word for why I live here."

-- Tessie Maranjo, SANTA CLARA PUEBLO

Every human being, to be mentally healthy, must have the feeling of belonging. When we have a sense of belonging we can be intimate. We can feel. We can connect. If we cannot develop this feeling of belonging, then we will feel lost of disconnected. To be disconnected from life is like walking around during the day not knowing the Sun exists. To have the feelings of intimacy is warm, glowy, joyful, loving, and connected. The feeling this Elder is talking about is available to everyone.

Great Spirit, let me be intimate.

A Guide for Sticky Situations

Spiritual Social: A Guide for Sticky Situations

We've all been there. Someone at a party tells an off-color joke, and as everyone around us laughs, we are horrified. At times like this it can seem like the rest of the world just doesn't quite "get it." The joke offends all of our sensibilities--due in no small part to our spiritual path. As practicing Witches, we understand the world on a deeper level. We work hard to eliminate such cruelties and disrespectful practices from our world. We purposely rip ourselves to shreds in order to reach down inside and remove all hints of such barbarism. It can be shocking to encounter hostility disguised as a joke.

How best to respond to a situation? Is there a solution that will not embarrass ourselves, or our host, and yet will allow others to see that we are firmly against this sort of talk? Yes, but keep in mind that the solutions presented here are simple and polite ways of dealing with sticky social situations. Your mileage may vary.

When faced with the obscene joke you can simply cast your eyes down and lower your head. Allow your expression to show that you are hurt and disappointed by the remarks. Do not laugh politely or even smile. You may notice that those who did laugh will be quickly embarrassed by it one they see your bowed head. God. Maybe next time they will think twice. There is nothing funny about prejudice, cruelty, or hatred.

While e the sort of passive response suggested might not be your usual reaction to a joke, when you are a guest you must make every to remember your hose. The four key words of etiquette are respect, kindness, consideration, and honesty. You should uphold these responsibilities not only for the host, but also for the person who told the joke, for yourself, and for the unfortunate soul who served as the punch line.

What if you personally are a target due to your spiritual practice? Perhaps you are at a perfectly lovely cocktail party and overhear someone talking about asking you to turn someone else into a toad. What then? Well, a lighthearted laugh can go a long way when you are targeted personally. Combine it with an offhand remark like, "Oh, I think the world has quite enough toads. Don't you?"

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

In the Moment: Practicing Everyday Magic

Everyday Ways to Strengthen Intuition

You can develop your intuition. Like practicing magic, there are
some steps that may help you. Ground yourself first, and be aware of your
desire and commitment to be in touch with your intuition. Center yourself on
the process, and take a moment to release any blocks that you may be
feeling physically, mentally, or spiritually. Usually this requires you to let go of your doubts. Affirm that intuition is natural and normal to all humans.
Align yourself with your own intuition by tuning in to your gut
instincts. Let your mind wander and your energy feel expansive. Ask the question you are concerned about, or call to mind the person, place, or thing you are trying to become clear on. Listen within your body, mind, and spirit for the answers. These answers will not necessarily be words. They may be physical sensations or emotions which will require your interpretation.

Like an athlete who trains for the task that he performs, it is
important to strengthen your intuition before relying heavily on it in a critical
or important situation. Experiment with everyday practices in order to
tune into, be aware of, and improve your intuition. Consider some of the
everyday occurrences that you could use to exercise your intuition.

How many times have you picked up the telephone and heard who was
calling only to say: "I just thought of you." telephones are great
intuition workout devices. Forget Caller ID: when the telephone rings take a moment to consider who might be calling'; then answer the phone and find out. If you are someone who receives many calls a day, this might be more difficult, but for those of us who enjoy a limited number of callers, we can often use rapid cognition to make an educated guess about who is calling,
determining their identity before picking up the phone. There are no real secrets to this.

The organic computer, our brain, boots up and quickly consults
historical data files, analyzing and comparing, looking for similarities of
circumstance. Based on the available date, we then make an educated guess about the identify of the caller.

For example, if my telephone were to ring now, my organic computer
might go through a series of thoughts to help determine the identity of the
caller. they'd be something like this: My husband usually phones from work
mid-morning, but I already heard from him earlier, so chances are he
won't be calling again. My mother usually calls in the early morning or afternoon. My friend usually calls just after lunch when she is stumped in the writing of her thesis. It's too early for her; she's probably writing away or
editing yesterday's work. My daughter is at preschool, but she is rarely
sick, and was well when I dropped her off this morning. Her preschool session is only three hours, and there're about forty-five minutes remaining before I pick her up. So unless an emergency has occurred, it is not the preschool. I left a message yesterday for the duct-cleaning service, and if they started work at nine then they might just be getting to the messages on their machine now. Oh. I bet that's who it is.

For every phone call the data that is processed and analyzed is
different. And while it seems like a lot of data, this can all happen in an
instant. Between one ring and the next is usually long enough for me to
figure out who might be calling.

Being Fully Present

How many of us drive across town in rush hour traffic thinking about
the problems we left behind at the office, or planning the dinner that
we need to make at home? How often have we tuned out what someone was saying to us, even for a split second, because we were listening to our own thoughts or judgments? How often have we "glazed over" at work due to fatigue or boredom?

Being fully present in the moment involves the engagement of our
senses, feelings and thoughts in the task at hand. It is a focused
awareness that enables us to fully absorb all the data that a situation offers, allowing these multiple perspectives to inform our rapid cognition and decision making.

While many people have found that meditation helps them to learn a
singular focus of mind, senses, and spirit, we can also cultivate our natural
abilities. We can learn to limit the busy-ness of our mind, clear
ourselves emotionally, and practice a cultivated awareness of our surroundings.

Whether you use journaling to clear your mind and untangle problems,
therapy to resolve emotional blockages, or prayer to connect with a higher
power, each of these can help you be more present in the moment. This
presence enables us to be aware of and identify the data coming in.

Harnessing Our Higher Powers

In addition to practicing and strengthening our intuitive abilities,
we can learn to use tools that help us focus our attention in the moment,
and help us make sound decisions.

Sometimes called divination, there are many ways to use a tool to
focus our intention and intuition. Common divination tools are the pendulum,
divining rod, scrying mirror, and water bowl. Each of these tools requires
you to form a relationship with it, tuning in to and understanding your own
specific responses as they manifest through, and with, the tool. Many books
have been written on each of these subjects, and are widely available.

Through regular awareness of your rapid-cognition process and
regular exercise of your intuitive abilities, you can allow this higher power
to be a part of your decision-making process. No longer limited to just thinking or puzzling out a problem, we can come to trust more in our quick
responses, our gut instincts, and our flashes of brilliance. Because they are grounded in everything we have ever learned and known, these instantaneous
responses are well researched, and may actually stretch even further than our history, connecting us to some of the stored collective memories of our
evolutionary process.

So let yourself be fully present in the moment of these tools
requires you to form a relationship with it, tuning in to and understanding your own specific responses as they manifest through, and with, the tool.

Kundalini

How does spiritual emergence begin?

No one knows for certain just what kick starts the unfolding of
spiritual potential. For some, spiritual emergence is a gentle and integrated
process which develops as a natural consequence of many years dedicated to
service and prayer or meditation under the guidance of a teacher or guru.
Others may experience a more abrupt awakening, possible due to practices which
awaken transformative energy before the person has done the necessary
groundwork.

It is thought that practices such as yoga, bioenergetics, polarity
work or breathwork cause the awakening of Kundalini energy which heralds the
transformation of spiritual potential. Kundalini is the Hindu word
for the sacred, transformative energy that awakens consciousness. According
to esoteric literature, this energy has been coiled at the base of the
spine in a latent form since birth, awaiting the stimulus to unfold its
potential.

As this energy becomes active, it is usually sensed as a vibrational
or energetic force in the body, together with a strong sense of spirit.
Its movement may be experienced as a rushing, outpouring, a steady
streaming up the spine, or a slowly coiling spiral motion.

Another common catalyst seems to be intense physical or emotional
distress. As people confront the limits of their endurance and come face to
face with death, they will often move into non ordinary or transpersonal states
of consciousness. Thus experiences with natural disasters, near death
experiences, or life transitions such as pregnancy, midlife or
separation, may be emotionally tense situations which can lead to spiritual
awakening.

Regardless of the specifics of each individual's experience, the
Kundalini awakening heralds a great period of change in a person's life.

What is spiritual emergency?

When spiritual seekers or even those who do not consider themselves
to be on a spiritual path find themselves experiencing levels of awareness or
energy transformation that they are unable to handle or for which they have
no reference, then the result can be a state of emergency. In this
state, a person feels highly vulnerable and oversensitive to incoming stimuli.
Typically they feel overwhelmed, fragmented, fearful, confused and
disoriented. With their absorption in inner processes, they may not
be able to look after even basic self care.

All these situations can be bewildering and frightening, and at these
times these people need support and reassurance as they undergo their
transformations. The spiritual emergency network in the US seeks to
network people and provide information to facilitate a more gentle emergence
of spiritual potentials. The network is intended to put people in touch
with others who have undergone similar experiences, or with counsellors
who are aware of spiritual dimensions of reality.

THE SYMPTOMS OF KUNDALINI AWAKENING
While the awakening Kundalini may be a dramatic experience, the
resultant shift in consciousness may be accompanied by years of physical and
psychological upheavals. The process of Kundalini awakening can vary
greatly from person to person. Some have intense physical symptoms, while
others experience mainly emotional or psychological symptoms. It is as if
the new energy invites a spring cleaning throughout the entire system, with
unresolved physical or emotional conditions coming up for resolution
and release. The life transforming changes which accompany a Kundalini
awakening cover the entire physiological, emotional, mental and spiritual
spectrum.

Greenwell (1990) has noted seven categories of symptoms which have
been observed during Kundalini awakening.

1. Pranic movements or kriyas

Prana is the Hindu word for vital energy. Thus as intense energy
moves through the body and clears out physiological blocks, a person may
experience intense involuntary, jerking movements of the body,
including shaking, vibrations, spasm and contraction. As deeply held armouring
and blockages to the smooth flow of energy are released, the person may
re-access memories and emotions associated with past trauma and
injury.

2. Yogic Phenomena

Some people find themselves performing yogic postures or hand mudra
gestures which they have never learned or could not do in a normal state of
consciousness. Similarly, they may produce Sanskrit words or sounds,
or have an awareness of inner music or sound, mantras or tones. Unusual
breathing patterns may appear with either very rapid or slow, shallow
breathing. Some people may not breathe at all for extended periods.

3. Physiological Symptoms

A Kundalini awakening often generates unusual physiological activity
as intense movement of energy releases toxins in the body. Symptoms
include apparent heart problems, pains in head and spine, gastrointestinal
disturbances and nervous problems. Internal sensations have been
reported as sensations of burning, oversensitivity to sensory input,
hyperactivity or lethargy, great variations in sexual desire and even spontaneous
orgasm. Symptoms can be erratic, coming and going without provocation, but
are generally unresponsive to medical treatment.

4. Psychological Upheaval

Spiritual awakening offers a direct challenge to the primacy of ego
consciousness and the myth of separation. It brings with it a
challenge to move beyond the unconscious responses ruled by drives and instincts
and remove ego consciousness from the centre stage of the psyche. It
comes as no surprise that such a challenge produces a period of confusion and
unbalance. People find themselves beset by inexplicable emotional states as they
move to clear out unresolved issues. The emotional roller coaster may
swing from feelings of anxiety, guilt and depression, through to compassion,
love and joy, with accompanying bouts of uncontrollable weeping.

5. Extra Sensory Experiences

As perception expands outside of consensus reality, people experience
atypical visual phenomena, including visions of lights, symbols,
entities, or review of past life experiences. Auditory input may include
hearing voices, music, inner sounds or mantras. Even the olfactory system may
be stimulated with perception of scents of sandalwood, rose or incense.
There may also be disruption of the proprioceptive system, with losing a
sense of self as a body, or feeling bigger than the body, or out of the body,
with the resulting confusion and disorientation.

6. Psychic Phenomena

With the opening up of psychic abilities, a person may experience
precognition, telepathy, psychokinesis, awareness of auras and
healing abilities.

7. Mystical States of Consciousness

A person may shift into altered states of consciousness where they
directly perceive the unity underlying the world of separation and experience
a deep peace and serenity with a profound knowing of wisdom.

In some cases, the state of emergency due to psychological upheaval
is so acute that it resembles a psychotic episode. Many clinicians still
regard phenomena associated with spiritual emergence as indicative of
pathology because the signs are so easily confused with the indicators of
psychosis, mania, depression, schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder.
Many people undergoing spiritual emergency are misdiagnosed and treated
with suppressive medication which further complicates their process.

What can be done to support a Kundalini awakening?

When Kundalini awakening happens to people who are not on a spiritual
path or who have no context or framework to understand the bewildering
upheaval of mind, body and spirit, the experience can leave them fragile and
fragmented. As the Kundalini process involves a redefinition and
reintegration of self, it adds extra pressure when health
professionals or significant others wish to suppress the transformation and insist
that the person conforms to old ways of being in the world.

Of greatest benefit is a supportive framework which can allow people
to make sense of the intricate connection between spirit and the movement of
physical energy in the body, rather than fearing they are going
insane. It is more empowering to understand that Kundalini awakening is a
process which taps into the blueprint for higher consciousness which is latent
within every human. While the enormous changes associated with a spiritual
awakening may demand psychological and social adjustments, they are
not in themselves necessarily indicative of illness. Communication and
connection with others who can provide support and a meaningful context for
understanding the process reduces the isolation and overwhelm and can
help to minimise the disturbance. Someone who has the personal qualities
of creative adaptation to change and a flexible mental framework is more
likely to weather the changes with grace and style than someone who is rigid
in their beliefs and world view.

Humanity's Wake Up Call

Usually the awakening of Kundalini was a process which only occurred
after years of spiritual practice and meditation. Yet increasingly, the
Kundalini experience is being reported among people who are not undertaking
spiritual practices. Since 1993, when Shared Transformation, an American
journal for connecting spiritual awakeners first began, it has been contacted by
over 700 people in the throes of spontaneous Kundalini arousal (Collie &
Kress,1995). These increased reports of spontaneous Kundalini
awakening at this time of planetary upheaval may be indicative of a larger purpose
at work, the beginning of a planetary wake up call. Anyone who is on a
spiritual path, or engaging in practices which change body energies,
such as meditation, yogic practices, breathwork, rebirthing or polarity
balancing, may find they begin to resonate with the changing energies at this
time and that they begin their own Kundalini awakening process.

Is Kundalini awakening the same as enlightenment?

It is important not to confuse Kundalini awakening with
enlightenment. Enlightenment rarely results from a single encounter with the
numinous. It is more as if the energetic awakening initiates an expansion in
consciousness which sets the scene for a progression of many
experiences with transpersonal states of consciousness. The intensity and
duration of each of glimpse varies with our readiness to contain and integrate
them. Thus the Kundalini awakening is not an end point in itself, but the
beginning of a transformation of consciousness which expands our
capacity to KNOW the infinite. Spiritual emergence often includes expanded
perceptual abilities, increased energy, creative expression and a dedication to
being of service for the greater good

The Well-Organized Witch

The Well-Organized Witch

Cant' find your athame and robes when it's time to leave for your
coven meeting? Do you have trouble finding that apartment-seeking spell
when you need a new place to live? Being a Witch isn't just about magic--it's also about being able to work effectively and efficiently. Yes, Witchcraft
requires work, and many organizational and efficiency skills can be applied
to the Craft.

Where do you do your magical work? Few people have a whole room to
devote to magic, but many can find a closet. A crate or small chest of
storage drawers can be there altar, covered by a length of cloth (a night-
table works well, too). Fabric stores often have cloth remnants that are
inexpensive and large enough to cover a small altar. Or you can use a length of cloth sold as a sarong. If you use a closet, you can hang your robes and other magical clothes at one end of the closet. If there is a shelf, you can use it for books or supplies. The drawers of the altar/chest can be used for smaller supplies like incense.

If you don't even have a spare closet, find some space in your
bedroom that you can use as an altar. If you cannot leave altar equipment out when you aren't using it, put it all in the same drawer. If you can, take
every item off the altar in the same order each time, and put it away covered by your altar cloth. You might want to wrap wands and athames in protective cloth--silk scarves or handkerchiefs work well. Some items can remain out: a chalice may be an ordinary glass you can put in the cupboard or a goblet you keep on your dresser because it's beautiful; a candle or two can be useful if the power goes out, or add atmosphere to your bedroom.

If you have more space,a larger chest of drawers or bureau is an
excellent altar. Drawers are useful for storing supplies, such as incense,
candles, extra altar cloths, roes that wont wrinkle, Tarot decks and out-of-
season altar decorations. After all that jack-o'-lantern candle holder has to go somewhere when it isn't Samhain, and so does that long black robe.

Robes need to be stored neatly, either hung up on a hanger or folded
and put in a drawer. They need to be washed frequently to keep them
physically clean and to purify the energy that will cling to them after a
ritual. (I'd advise against putting them in your regular laundry.) Having more than one set of robes makes it easier to have clean ones available when you need them.

Your supplies need to be organized so that you can find everything,
and anything perishable needs to be stored properly. Incense can lost
its scent, as can essential oils. Candles can warp and melt, as well as rub wax on other items. Robes need to be kept clean; if you have robes you use only on certain occasions, you may need to store them specially.

Incense needs to be stored in an airtight container. A tall jar may
work, and so might a cylindrical plastic container made for storing
spaghetti. Put different scents in separate plastic bags inside the larger
container, or all the fragrances will start to blend after a while. You probably don't want frangipani-scented frankincense, or copal that smells of rose. A word of caution: some incense ingredients can eat through plastic.
Cinnamon, for example, will ruin a plastic container, and eat through rubber
bands and plastic bags quickly. Check your storage containers every few weeks to be sure nothing like this is happening. Almost nothing will eat through glass, but glass is breakable.

Candles need to be kept in a cool, dry place. If you put them in
the freezer for several hours before you burn them, they will last
longer and drip less. Unless you have a lot of freezer space, most of your candle supply can be kept in the basement, or at the bottom of a closet. Check frequently to see if they are staying in their proper shape, especially in summer.

If you keep salt on your altar, it should probably be in an
airtight, moisture-proof jar or container, unless you live in a very dry
climate. Have a small salt dish for ritual purposes, and keep the rest dry.

Keep the herbs you use for magic separate from cooking herbs. Store
herbs in a tightly closed jar, most commercial spice jars are too small
and made for decorative use. Unless you use herbs rarely, you need to keep them in a convenient place. Small squat jars, wider than they are tall, with
tightly fitting lids, work best for all sorts of herbs. Many cooking herbs
have magical uses, but you may want a separate supply if you use them for both purposes on a regular basis.

Whether you keep your Book of shadows on paper or on computer, it
helps to have it organized. If you prefer paper, consider a three-ring
binder, divided into sections such as "Rituals Performed," "Dreams," "Tarot
Readings," etc. Whatever you need to keep track of, have a section for it. If you prefer a bound book, consider reserving the last few pages as an index. Number your pages, make a list of page numbers in the back, and write a word or two about each entry in pencil. Later, you can go back and rewrite the index if you need to.

If you use a "Disk of Shadows," be sure to keep multiple backups.
Again, a folder for each different sort of record helps keep things easier to
find, and so does a consistent naming format. For example, rituals could
be in a separate folder, and within it, the files could be named "Samhain
2002," "Beltane 2005," and so on. If you are concerned about other people
reading your "book," you can devise a file-naming system that isn't so obvious. A file named "r-103102" might mean the same as "Ritual for Samhain 2002." Set up a schedule for doing back-ups, such as every Wednesday or every New Moon.

If you ever have occasion to practice away from home, you might want
to assemble a Traveling Witch Kit. Choose a container that can also
serve as a small altar--a lunch box works well, or a wooden box with a tight
lid. Stock it with incense and an incense burner, a candle in its holder, a
collapsible or unbreakable cup for water (and a bottle of water if you have room), salt in a waterproof container, a small cloth to put on the box as an altar cloth, and possibly a small goddess and/or god statue or other images. You might also have a miniature Tarot deck, a feather, a few crystals or other stones that have some significance to you, and anything else you might want to use to do magic on the go.

If you regularly go to coven or other group rituals, you probably
want to be prepared to take food and drink along. It's good to have three or four recipes to bring that everyone likes, or foods you can keep on
hand. Some people bring a gallon of cider or a pan of brownies. It's very useful to have a regular food or drink to bring, so you don't have to think about it. Be sure to mark coven meetings and other rituals on your calendar as soon as you can (if necessary, just write "busy" on that evening). That way, you won't double-book yourself.

Some covens like to get together a few times a year for a "business
meeting" to plan activities. Everyone brings a calendar, making sure at
least one person has a guide that shows holidays and the Moon's phases.
Schedule your Sabbats as far ahead as people feel comfortable making plans.

Keeping your books on magic and Witchcraft in alphabetical order by
author's last name will save you a lot of work in the long run. When you
only have three books, it seems silly, but when you have thirty, it makes more sense. When you have three hundred, it becomes absolutely necessary if you want to find a given book without extended searching. If you have a lot of books, you might even want to arrange them by subject as well, and alphabetical within that. Some people prefer alphabetical by title, which is fine if you can remember the title. If you have trouble remembering the author, arrange by subject instead. But have some sort of system as early as possible.

There are a number of good websites online that deal with keeping
your life tidy and organized. Many of tem have hints you can apply to being a well-organized Witch. My favorites are http://www.flylady.net
and lifeorganizers.com.

Magic happens spontaneously, but being reasonably well organized
makes it easier to be spontaneous, so you can let the magic happen.

Blessed Be,
Lady Nightshayde
