Greetings again CB!
Your mentioning of the marvels of medieval architecture in Italy <I've not been there yet, but I'm working on it!> makes me think of something that in my opinion now seems lacking in the architecture of the past few decades or more - Sacred Geometry. I'm sure that there may still be good examples of such features in modern architecture e.g. a preference for incorporating the Golden Ratio into proportions, whether by calculation and design, or by purely chance or subjective aesthetics, but to me, the deliberate design and incorporation of sacred ratios, even in the modern churches <which were traditionally full of such ratios> now seems to be something of a lost art, and perhaps more sadly, a lost appreciation by the wider community... Please feel free to correct me if I am making an inaccurate observation here, but that's the way it seems to me...
Once again, many thanks for sharing those fascinating examples of Italian inspiration - viva Italia! :)
Blessings and best wishes, Graham.

Fabulous Graham, my pleasure! Spreading this info around is a great idea! I got it myself from another forum, and have posted it elsewhere as well. It is a really positive example in so many ways and quite brave as well - I think there is much there to be applauded and admired, whatever one's particular stripes.

When I lived in Italy I spent a great deal of time studying the frescos and (decorative and functional) architectural grammar of the traditional religious buildings (whether Catholic churches, or surviving ancient temples, or Hermetic/Pagan-themed rooms in NeoPlatonic Renaissance villas and palazzi) and I was in nearly all cases literally floored by the intensity, the quality, and the sheer gobsmacking extent of it all.

But in every case too I was greatly saddened by its remoteness in time (for the Pagan ones) or by the fact it was the dreary old Christian crap yet again - torture scene this, virgin birth that, hellfire the other. Something very tragic has occurred to lead spiritual artists down such a desolate path for so long.

It is great to see the natural religious and artistic genius of the Italians is emerging in forward-looking contemporary form through a natural, endogenous esotericism!

Viva la Renaissance!

I couldn't agree more, Graham, and the date I think we're after is 1945.

That isn't to say that there is no merit in post-WWII architectural styles per se, or futuristic visions of what can now be achieved on a purely engineering level which in the past were impossible; but the problem is similar to that which afflicts everything these days.

The bottom line today is often economic, not spiritual; and temporal, not eternal (although obviously economic considerations always weighed in).

"God" may in actual fact be literally "in the detail" - which perhaps explains why minimalist functionalism is the lingua franca of modern architecture: it is mostly built to satisfy the demands of an ostensibly godless worldview - that of materialistic capitalism.

As a result, the Dollar has perhaps been the basic blueprint of a great many post-industrial buildings, perhaps most; even the most impressive have been simply expressing a type of mere vulgar financial power, rather than depth or refinement of taste as lavish buildings tended to in the past (going way, way, way, way back).

So inspirational then to see the founder of Damanhur was a stockbroker - reversing the trend somewhat! But then, the Medici were bankers, weren't they. Seems to be an Italian thing perhaps...

Best regards

C.B.
