Brighid, excellent woman,
Sudden flame,

Song of the Virgins of Kildare
Brighid is pan-Celtic goddess, appearing as Brighid or Brigit in
Ireland, Brigantia in Northern England, Bride in Scotland, and Brigandu
in Brittany. Her name is variously interpreted as meaning "Fiery Arrow",
"The Bright One", "the Powerful One" or "The High One". She may
originally have been a sun goddess, since she was born at sunrise and
immediately a tower of flame emerged from her forehead that stretched
from earth to heaven. She is said to be the daughter of the Dagda ['good
god'] and the wife of Bres. Her face is either pied, half youthful and
half crone, or half beautiful and half ugly.
Brighid is a triple goddess, and some say that there are three Brighids:
the Brighid of poetry, prophecy and inspiration who invented ogham; the
Brighid of healing waters and midwifery; and lastly the Brighid of fire
who oversees the hearth, and the forge and who is the patroness of
craftsmen and women. This triplication was represented by the Druidic
sign of awen ['inspiration' ], known as the fiery arrows of Brighid
since it is represented by three shafts of sunlight. It was likely
Brighid who inspired the line in the famous Song of Amergin: "I am a
fire in the head". She also has aspects as a goddess of fertility,
livestock and warfare.
Her festival is Imbolc [2nd February] also called Oimelc ['ewe's milk']
which marked the first stirrings of spring when young sheep were born,
and when ewes came into milk. On this day, the first of the Celtic
spring, she was said to use her white wand to "breathe life into the
mouth of the dead winter", meaning the white fire of the sun awakened
the land. An old poem stated; "Today is the day of Bride, The Serpent
shall come from the hole." An effigy of the serpent was often honoured
in the ceremonies of this day, making it clear that Brighid had aspects
as a serpent goddess. As the serpent sloughed its old skin and was
renewed, so the land shook off winter to emerge restored; the snake
symbolised the cycle of life. When Brighid's cult was suppressed, then
St Patrick had indeed banished the snakes [Pagans] from Ireland.
However, Brighid's popularity was so great that the church transformed
her into a saint, allegedly the midwife of Christ and the daughter of a
Druid who was converted to Christianity by St. Patrick, and who went on
to found the Abbey of Kildare. Maybe she has the last laugh, as there
are even now many more places in Ireland named after Brighid than
Patrick.
Her festival became Candlemas when church candles were blessed. It
remained a popular occasion in Celtic areas and most of its customs are
plainly Pagan. Brighid was invited into the home by the woman of the
house, in the form of a doll or corn dolly dressed in maiden white.
Oracles were taken from the ashes of the hearth fire, which people
examined for a sign that Brighid had visited, i.e. a mark that looked
like a swan's footprint. If found, it was considered a lucky omen. The
swan was an ancient attribute of the goddess Brighid. Many Irish homes
still have a Brighid's cross hung up somewhere. This was originally a
solar symbol.
The goddess's chief shrine was at Kildare [Cull Dara = 'Temple of the
Oak'] where a perpetual flame was kept burning behind a circular hedge
of shrubs or thorns. It was tended by a college of nineteen virgin
priestesses called Daughters of the Flame. Each day a different
priestess was responsible for maintaining the flame from sundown till
sundown. On the twentieth day, Brighid herself tended the flame. No man
was ever allowed to enter the Shrine or have contact with the
priestesses. Any male who did went mad.
With the coming of Christianity, the priestesses became nuns of the
abbey said to have been founded by 'Saint Brigit' and kept the flame
burning for another thousand years, until the Vatican decreed it was
merely a Pagan ritual and ordered it extinguished. During the Vatican
modernisation program of the 1960's St. Brigit was decanonised.
Brighid was also the patroness of healing wells and springs, since the
sun was believed to empower the water at certain times of year.
Sacrifices were made to her where three streams met, and brass or rings
were thrown into wells.
Brighid's sun-arrows are the Druidic symbol of awen, which means
inspiration. Hers are the fires of creation. Brighid's gift is
inspiration in all its forms. She is the patroness of poets and bards,
sparking the 'fire in the head' which motivates them to create songs and
poems. She is also the patroness of artists, smiths and craftsmen.
Brighid is the keeper of the hearth fire, and reminds us how important
it is to have a comfortable and beautiful home to return to at the end
of each day. Brighid also rules prophecy and divination, arts which
require another kind of inspiration. She rules all forms of divination,
but especially those involving fire, water, crystals and reflections,
and ogham, the magical alphabet she invented. Moreover, she is a goddess
of healing; ruling the healing wells and springs of Ireland.

Her Story
Aphrodite is also known to the Romans as Venus. She is the goddess of
doves, swans, roses, apples, arts and all things graceful, inspired and
creative. According to myth, she emerged as a nymph from the waves and
immediately drove almost every male god wild with desire.
Aphrodite was very much a free goddess. She revelled in indulging
her appetites, which by all accounts, were as impressive as her looks.

symbol of the way in which the passion and fulfilment of artistic
creativity is eternally available to everyone.

THE LAST PASSAGES
After extensive searching, study of all the world's major religions
and teachings beyond those, reading hundreds if not thousands of books
and looking inward I found myself stuck several years ago. How, asked I
of me, do I finish this journey? How do I move back into the peace, love
and connection that I know is mine without knowing exactly where that
is or how to reach it?
There are many of you today on this planet at this juncture. Many
passages have come and gone and yet still you are not "there" wherever
you think "there" is – and that is probably unclear. The major
religions, the books today and back through antiquity don't explain how
to reach Self Realization. Generalities prevail then and now, stories,
parables and even hints that you do not have to worry about that because
very few reach that state. Today, you can all reach that state of being
if you chose because this planet is not the planet of the past. We are
living in a different reality – do you know this? Are you shifting with
the evolution of Earth and this solar system?

Many
energetic intercessions by many beings in and out of form have created
energies on this planet that are wholly conducive to you, and all life,
to step into the innate way of being – soul using the form as a tool, a

Emotional and Spiritual Maturity
I will talk about this in greater detail on this week's radio show on Blog Talk Radio.
Most
of us would define ourselves as mature adults, usually in control of
our emotions. Then something happens and we surprise ourselves at how
quickly and thoroughly we can fall apart, our emotions scrambled,
feeling so out of control that we wonder whether we will ever be normal
again. How did we go from feeling mature and in control to immature and
out of control? The answer lies in whether we are spiritually or
emotionally mature and how we ground that energy in our life.
Many
clients ask me why their lessons are so challenging. My response is
that it appears that way because the most challenging lessons always
involve something that really matters to us. We notice the issues that
put us face to face with every fear, doubt, insecurity, and emotion that
we have kept hidden. Why can't we be mature, calm and objective in
these situations? We can if we are acting from our spiritual maturity
instead of trying to control our emotions and justify our experiences
through them.
Without
the knowledge, confidence and support that we get from spirit we rely
on our ego's maturity level to get us through whatever we are facing.
And its maturity level is at the first trauma we experienced in our
life, plus all of the emotional baggage we carry. Since every issue we
face is an opportunity to heal our emotional wounds and to bring us into
spiritual maturity, no wonder we get stuck, overwhelmed and feel out of
control. We're looking at the problem from its ego perspective instead
of moving into a higher one. The clarity we seek and maturity we need
come from spirit, not from the ego.
Clarity
takes on a whole new meaning with spiritual maturity because we are not
looking for validation or confirmation of our worthiness, our intention
is on healing and we are open to the truth in whatever way it is
presented to us. With spiritual maturity we can ask 'what is next'
instead of the 'why is this happening to me' and use the answers we
receive to complete that level of growth and healing. With clarity we
have the truth we need, although not necessarily the answers the ego
wants. But with truth and clarity we can complete our lessons and move
into more joyful, peaceful, loving, mature and controlled living.

The Energies of December
It's
finally the last month of what has been a challenging year but not as
much as previous years. This month may seem to move slowly because there
will be many opportunities to complete work we have been doing all year
and that includes the final release of beliefs, people, situations and
memories that we have been working on since 1995. To give us support
Mercury is retrograde all month, Venus is re-tracing its retrograde path
until the 21st and we have a full moon lunar eclipse on the
same day. I hope you're ready to let things go because it has moved from
'optional' to 'required'.
The
Mercury retrograde is probably the most significant thing we have this
month because it meets up with Pluto for nearly a week. This is a highly
transformative energy that removes all obstacles to change-with the
power to vaporize anything in its path (think of Darth Vader). I have
always thought of Mercury as being strongly associated with karma so be
prepared to face your karmic cycle challenges with the purpose of ending
them forever. If you do not know what they are right now, don't worry,
when they come up you will know. A hint: watch for anything or anyone who makes you very angry or pushes your buttons in a way that's hard to ignore..
Then
there's the full moon eclipse which is at 29 degrees of Gemini. This is
the third full moon that has occurred at the last degree of a sign and
that is very significant, given that this year has been about endings,
releasing blocks, and completing karma. And on this day Venus moves out
of its shadow and Mercury passes a 29 degree mark in its retrograde.
Mars will meet with Pluto two days before the eclipse. Do
you think there is going to be some serious 'ending energy' happening
around Christmas week? Pay attention to what happens at your family
gatherings during this period.
The
focus for this month is on how you want to enter the new year. What
intentions do you want to set for yourself and what do you need to do to
be ready to fulfill them? December will help you let go of anything
that stands in your way. In other words, what have you outgrown that you
can now leave behind knowing that as soon as you do something else will
take its place that is aligned with your new intention? As you go
through this month don't regret or resist what leaves your life, as many
things probably will. Instead, make a list of your new life intentions
and let that be your focus as you allow this energy of completion to
help you remove anything that blocks you from the peace, joy,
prosperity, abundance and love that you want in your life. Have a

Uriel's Message -- Forgive Generously
Giving
forgiveness to others is what allows you to release them and you from
your souls' shared karmic journey. This is more than an optional step on
your journey, it is required for you to move from karma to creation,
from the path of destiny into your role of co-creator with the Universe.
Without forgiveness you are blocked from receiving the fullness of the
divine guidance, blessings, support and grace that allow for joyful,
effortless living. That is why you should apply forgiveness generously,
fully and completely to everyone.
So
often that which you must forgive has been the source of great pain,
coming from those who have wounded you to the depths of your soul. You
struggle with what they have done, try to understand their reasons and
motivations, and wonder why they can be so cruel. You question whether
you can forgive them and their actions as you feel this is a form of
approval or acceptance. But you think this way because you have a
limited awareness of your journey with them.

are asked to forgive so that you can end karma and what you know of
others through your pain is where you are the receiver. In other
lifetimes you have been the one who caused pain, consciously or
unconsciously, and what you are receiving is the other side of this
cycle. The cycle repeats because everyone is reliving what has been
done, again and again, over the course of lifetimes. It is
not possible to undo what has already been done, but you can stop these
cycles from repeating, which is held in your choice to forgive.
When
you forgive you are only focused on ending the karmic cycle. Nothing
else is part of that decision. The choice is not whether you can forgive
others or whether they have done the unforgivable, but whether you want
to end your karma with them, to be free of these cycles and their
patterns in your life. This is a choice you make for yourself, so you
can be free of these energies. You do not make this choice on behalf of
anyone else. So forgive generously, fully and completely; give the gift
of forgiveness to everyone in your life and free yourself of the
connections that have defined your life until this moment so that new
paths, possibilities and potentials open for you.

The Caring We Share
Whether
it's through emails or on Facebook or Twitter, there are so many
examples of the caring that we give to each other as Indigos and
Crystals. We know that we share similar life paths, experiences,
challenges and doubts. And we don't hide the fact that we are as
confused as anyone else, have questions that we cannot answer and often
have trouble dealing with the world. Instead, we share these fears and
concerns with others and find comfort in knowing that they feel them too
and are happy to support us.
There
was a time, and for some people this is still true, when we had to hide
our doubts and insecurities because they were a sign of weakness.
Everyone had to know their place in the world or convince others that
they did. 'Fake it until you make it' was what we believed we had to do
in order to learn how to navigate the world. And if we told someone we
were scared or unsure, they would not be supportive or would think that
we were incompetent. We were afraid to show our fear because others
might take advantage of us (and sometimes they did) or we felt that we
were the only ones who felt that way.
Today
we have so many different ways of connecting with people who are just
like us, and who are more than happy to find kindred spirits who feel
the same way they do. And what we have found is when we share from the
point of our fear we connect to those who can help us. We no longer have
to pretend we know all of the answers, we can share our questions and
find someone who has a similar experience and through what they have
learned we can learn too.
Our
new connecting networks allow us to share our lives because we teach
from what we know and have learned. No one has all of the answers but
through our shared questions we all find the answers we seek that will
make our lives easier. Our fears, doubts and insecurities are the
vehicles through which we learn, teach and help others. The more we
share them openly and honestly the more we understand and give someone
else the gift of understanding.

Today, recognize
fear
in your life and send it away. Fear is a bully and if you face him down he has
no choice but to run. He will run before strength and action. He will run
before faith and perseverance. He will even run before patience.
Fear loves to hide under
various disguises. Sometimes he is called Tension or Anxiety. Worry is one of
his favorite names. Shyness is another. Apathy and Boredom are some very
secret names that he has.
If you are not living your
life full of action and engagement, embracing life with zest and vigor, then dig
a little deeper and see if fear is hiding in the corners of your life, along
with his sidekick doubt. Shine the bright lights of self-Love and faith on
them. And then act. Do what you fear, over and over, and fear will lose his

Living for Ourselves
Trying to Please Others
We don't need to live seeking approval from our parents or others; this can be overcome no matter what your age.
Most of us come to a point in our lives when we question why we are doing what we are doing, and many of us come to realize that we may be living our lives in an effort to make our parents happy. This realization can dawn when we are in our 20s, our 40s, or even later, depending upon how tight a hold our family of origin has on our psyche. We may feel shocked or depressed by this information, but we can trust that it is coming to us at this time because we are ready to find out what it would mean to live our lives for ourselves, following the call of our own soul, and refusing any longer to be beholden to someone else's expectations.
One of the most common reasons we are so tied into making our parents, or others, happy, is that we were not properly mirrored when we were children. We were not honored as individuals in our own right, with a will and purpose of our own, to be determined by our own unfolding. As a result, we learned to look outside of ourselves for approval, support, and direction rather than look within. The good news is that the part of us that was not adequately nurtured is still there, inside us, like a seed that has not yet received the sunlight and moisture it needs to open and to allow its inner contents to unfurl. It is never too late to provide ourselves with what we need to awaken this inner being.
There are many ways to create a safe container for ourselves so that we can turn within and shine the light of awareness there. We may join a support group, go to therapy, or start a practice of journaling every day for half an hour. This experience of becoming is well worth the difficult work that may be required of us to get there. In whatever process we choose, we may feel worse before we feel better, but we will ultimately find out how to live our lives for ourselves and how to make ourselves happy.

Happy Birthday Oberon Zell! Born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1942, Oberon has
made many landmark accomplishments to date and continues to be a major
influence in the Pagan community. One of his more well known
accomplishments is the co-founding of the Church of All Worlds on 4/7/62 with Richard Lance Christie.

Incense of the day: Coriander
As we
travel we are all faced with choices. Hecate is the Goddess of the
Crossroads. Go to her if you need to make a decision in matters having
to do with travel or life opportunities. Take three apples and go to a
crossroads that is not busy with traffic, ideally at night. Cut each in
half so the pentacle formed of the seeds is showing. Thinking of your
choices, place one-half of an apple at each intersection. Then make your wish and place the last two halves where the roads join. Ask for
Hecate's help in making your decision. Go home and eat an apple or drink an apple beverage before bed. Dream of possibilities. Save the seeds to plant in the crossroads area next spring, and ask again for Hecate's
blessings.

you're feeling klutzy, think of an animal that represents gracefulness
to you, such as a butterfly or a gazelle. Sit quietly in a dark room,
breathing deeply for a few minutes, then ask the spirit of that animal
to join you and to give you some of its gracefulness. Envision the
animal spirit entering your aura and remaining with you, and in you, for several minutes. Then thank the spirit for sharing its energy with you

The concept of sacrifice for spiritual reasons has been virtually lost in contemporary culture. Today, the word only has negative connotations, connected with victimization and cruelty and needless pain. Yet the offering of sacrifice has been part of most religious traditions. Ancient peoples offered up something they valued - for it would not be a sacrifice if it were worthless - so that spring would come, or order would be maintained in the cosmos, or a beloved child saved from death. Sacrifice may be a difficult spiritual practice today, but the wisdom of the ages calls us to consider it.
