Odin, Norse God of Wisdom

Odin, Norse God of Wisdom
Odin is a principal member of the Æsir (Norse Pantheon) and is associated with wisdom, war, battle and death -- Odin is also
associated with magic, poetry, prophecy, victory, and the hunt. Odin,
the Norse God of Wisdom, is regarded as a Psychopomps, "guide of souls."
Odin and his wife, Freyja, each take half the those who have died in
battle and lead them to their afterlife homes. Freyja's afterlife home
for souls is Fólkvangr, and Odin's is Valhalla. They provide a safe
passage and a place of peace for deceased souls.
Valhalla is the hall of the fallen), where Odin received the souls of
the warriors killed in battle. The souls of women warriors, and those
strong and beautiful women whom Odin favored, became Valkyries, who
gather the souls of warriors fallen in battle. These souls Odin would be
need to fight for him in the battle of Ragnarök (the Armageddon of the
gods of Asgard). Valhalla is extravagantly beautiful, with five hundred
and forty gates, and a vast hall of gold, hung around with golden
shields, and spears and coats of mail.
The Poetic Edda is a collection of Old Norse poems primarily preserved
in the Icelandic medieval manuscript Codex Regius. Along with Snorri
Sturluson's Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda is the most important extant
source on Norse mythology and Germanic heroic legends, and from the
early 19th century onwards has had a powerful influence on later
Scandinavian literature, not merely through the stories it contains but
through the visionary force and dramatic quality of many of the poems.
In the Voluspa, a poem in the Poetic Edda , a volva (shamanic seeress in
Norse paganism) tells Odin of the creation of the world and its
eventual end. She tells Odin of events of the distant past and far into
the future. She tells of how he and his brothers formed Midgard (one of
the Nine Worlds and the home of the humans) from the sea, and the
creation of the first humans, Ask and Embla who were created by Hoeir,
Loourr and Odin.
The seeress also tells Odin of his own involvement in the Æsir-Vanir
War, and the death of Baldr, his son. She further tells how Odin is
slain by the wolf Fenrir at Ragnarok, the subsequent avenging of Odin
and death of Fenrir by his son Víoarr, how the world disappears into
flames and, how the earth again rises from the sea. She then relates how
the surviving Aesir remember the deeds of Odin.
For these gifts of seeing, Odin journeys to Mirmir's Well, plucked out
one eye and gave it as an offering by dropping it in the well -- in
exchange, he then is allowed to drink from the well which gives him the
wisdom he seeks. The Prose Edda details that Mirmir's Well is located
beneath one of three roots of the world tree Yggdrasil, a root that
passes into the land of the frost jotnar where the primordial plane of
Ginnungagap once existed. The Prose Edda relates that the water of the
well contains much wisdom.
A translation by Benjamin Thorpe, (1782 - 19 July 1870) an English Anglo-Saxon scholar, tells about Odin's eye in the well.
"Of what wouldst thou ask me?
Why temptest thou me?
Odin! I know all,
where thou thine eye didst sink
in the pure well of Mim."
Mim drinks from mead each morn
from Valfather's pledge
Valfather was another name for Odin, one of many. A völva recounts to
Odin that she knows that Odin once placed one of his eyes in Mímisbrunnr
(Mimir's Well) as a pledge, and that Mímir drinks from the well every
morning.
In Norse religion, Asgard is one of the Nine Worlds and is the country
or capital city of the Norse Gods. Valhalla is located within Asgard.
Odin had two other great halls besides Valhalla. The first residence is
Gladsheim, a vast hall where Odin presides over the twelve Judges, whom
he had appointed to regulate the affairs of Asgard. Odin and his wife,
Freyja, are the rulers of Asgard. The second residence is Valaskjálf,
built of solid silver, in which there was an elevated place, Hlidskjalf,
from his throne on which he could perceive all that passed throughout
the whole earth. Valhalla is the third residence of Odin.
According to the Prose Edda, Odin, the first and most powerful of the
Æsir, was a son of Bestla and Borr and brother of Vili and Vé. With
these brothers, he cast down the frost giant Ymir and made Earth from
Ymir's body.
Odin was the supreme God of the Norse Vikings.

Hello Friends
It's been an extremely busy week. We've had birthday celebrations,
car MOT time and a sick bug going from family member to family member.
I am looking forward to the weekend! How about you? Do you have plans?

DIY Magick
Opening a portal is simple. So simple
in fact that many are opened without intention. And from some of
these portals entities who care little for humankind emerge to wreak
havoc. When this occurs, often clean up crews are required to come
in and both close the portal and send the entities off (one way or
other).
And though it's irresponsible at best
to open a portal without both the knowledge and intention to close it
after you've completed your task, people do it every day. In the
December issue of Wizard and Witch magazine we'll be addressing
portals in more detail.
But what happens when you run into an
open portal, or perhaps accidentally open one yourself? The best
advice is to leave the vicinity and find a mystic, priest, or
paranormalist who has experience in working with portals as quickly
as possible. The sooner you get an experienced energy worker on the
job the better.
However, because you don't want to be
responsible for something potentially nasty getting out whilst your
getting help, I'll share a band aid (plaster) approach.
Portal Jamming
What you'll need
Enough salt to go across the width of
the portal at the base.
What to do:
Pour the salt in a line (as evenly
as possible) at the base of the portal.
Say:
By my will I jam this
portal. You may go in peace, but you may not cross this line.
Whether your nature would make you count the grains, you fear it
because it's energy is pure, or you're aware it will burn you
severely, this line of salt will hold you for a long time.
Know
I'm leaving now to find one who knows how to deal with you as well
as close and seal the portal. You'd be wise to be gone when we
return.
Go get the pro and return with him
or her as quickly as you possibly can. The jam is temporary and the
entity will eventually get around the line even if it must open
another portal nearby to do so.
Don't let the simplicity of this
jamming method fool you. There's been cases where the entity has not
only vacated the premises but sealed the portal behind itself (keep
in mind these cases are rare and you shouldn't rely on the fact the
threat will be enough).
Tarot Techniques
Opening portals can be extremely risky
without proper preparation and knowledge. Whilst your getting the
knowledge, there's another way you can have the portal experience
without directly opening one. I like to call it the pseudo-portal
technique for this very reason (pretty witty huh?...lol).
Here's how you do it:
Separate the Major Arcana from the
rest of the pack.
Look through the pictures and find
one who has an archetype you want to learn more about (I wouldn't
suggest The Tower, Death, or The Devil, if it's your first
experience or you're a highly emotional person).
Stare at the card for
approximately 3-5 minutes taking note of every possible detail.
Close your eyes and imagine the
card imprinted on your eye lids.
Open your eyes and take in all the
details once more.
Lay the card aside.
Close your eyes once more and
imagine the card directly in front of you standing 10' high. As you
look at it imagine it swings open like a door and all you can see is
darkness behind it.
Now see a duplicate you emerging
from your body and boldly walking through the doorway.
Cast your intention into your
duplicate. For this adventure s/he is now completely you.
Look through the duplicate's eyes.
If you see the scene and the archetype from the card you're in the
right place. If you see anything else, leave immediately.
Spend some time communicating with
the archetype. Make sure to ask lots of questions. How else can you
learn?
When you're finished, thank the
archetype and go back through your doorway, close it, and have the
duplicate return to your body.
Note- Because this is a
pseudo-portal you're dealing with it isn't strictly necessary to
close the doorway. I'd strongly advise it though, simply because
it's good practice for when you're ready to tackle portals.
Something to think about
"To hold the same views at forty
as we held at twenty is to have been stupefied for a score of years,
and take rank, not as a prophet, but as an unteachable brat, well
birched and none the wiser."
