Introduction to Wicca
Week 7: The Wheel of the Year, Part 1
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
The Wheel of the Year is the term applied to the cycle of the seasons, as observed by most contemporary Pagans and Wiccans. While not every group celebrates each of the eight Sabbats, it's often a common thread among different Wiccan and Pagan groups. In this lesson, we're going to start looking at the eight Sabbats. You'll get a chance to learn about their history and what they represent, as well as rituals, craft ideas, and ways to celebrate them.
Samhain, October 31
Samhain is known as the Witch's New Year, and falls on October 31 in the Northern Hemisphere (if you're below the equator, all of your Sabbat dates will be different by six months). Although this is celebrated as Halloween, it's also a time of sacred reflection and for honoring the dead. Learn about Samhain history, rituals and celebrations, and more!
Yule, the Winter Solstice
Yule typically falls around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, and is the longest night of the year. It's the night that truly marks the beginning of winter, and reminds us that we're still in for a couple of months of cold and darkness before spring returns -- however, the day after Yule, the sun begins its journey back towards earth.
Imbolc, a Festival of Light
Imbolc is sometimes called Candlemas, and is typically a day associated with the Celtic goddess Brighid. Celebrated on February 2, this is a festival of fire and light, and is a harbinger of spring. Although there still is snow on the ground at Imbolc, we know that soon, spring will return.
Ostara, the Vernal Equinox
Although the Christians typically celebrate Easter around this time of year, for Wiccans and Pagans it's Ostara. This is a time of balance, because there are equal hours of night and day. Ostara is the time when the snow begins to melt, and we can celebrate the first day of spring.
Beltane, a Day of Fire and Fertility
Come May 1, the earth and everyone on it is fertile and ready to bloom! The old custom of May Day lives on in our modern Beltane festivals, which celebrate the greening of the earth, and the fertile land which is ready to be plowed. Beltane is chock-full of sexual imagery (after all, it's a fertility celebration), from the May Pole to the opening of magical spring flowers.
Next Week: The Wheel of the Year, Part 2
We've looked at the first five of the Wiccan sabbat celebrations, so in our next lesson we'll finish up the other three. We'll also take time to look at entire year's worth of rituals. Until then, keep learning and growing, and have a magical week!

Navigating the Landscape of the Mind
Event Details: Snow Date Saturday, Jan 28 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
At some point, we all have dreams that we know are trying to tell us something. And while there are many reference books assigning meaning to the images revealed in our subconscious, those meanings come from people who do not know us or our lives, personally. In fact, everyone has their own individual view of this world and all that is contained within it. What frightens one person gives another one purpose. So how can any dream symbol have a 'one-size-fits-all' meaning? Join us as we learn to explore our dreamscapes from our own unique perspective. By entering our dreams as a student approaches a teacher, we open our minds and hearts to the rich landscape of the subconscious mind and access our higher self. This workshop is a must-see for the serious student as well as the cosmic traveler.
Jefferson Harman is a Symbolic Intuitive, Dream Interpreter, Radio Personality, and Writer who reads the symbols present in your dreams and everyday life. By interpreting this invisible language, he identifies your blocks and challenges and ways to overcome them. He has been actively studying the relationships among metaphysics, psychology, and anatomy for over 20 years.

Where: Off the Beaten Path

Bring: tarot deck
Price/Donation: $5
(Tarot Practice Swap)
Event Details: The most common complaint heard from students learning to read the tarot is that they have no one for whom to do practice readings. Because they know friends and family so well, they tend to read things into their readings instead of just allowing the reading to flow. These sessions will allow students to practice reading for a person they don't know. Students will be paired off and will read for each other with Barbara (our tarot instructor) available for assistance should someone get stuck. The best way to become a good reader is to practice. Here's your chance! The swap is open to anyone learning to read tarot or who needs to brush up on their skills.

Goddess Of The Day: CALLISTO Chilseong-je (Korea)
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Tue Jan 3, 2012 6:20 pm (PST)
Goddess Of The Day: CALLISTO
Chilseong-je (Korea)
Themes: Instinct; Protection; Flexibility
Symbols: A Bear; a Willow Branch; the Constellation Ursa Major
About Callisto:
Appearing sometimes as a she-bear guarding her cubs, the Greek goddess
Callisto reinspires the natural instincts with which we have lost touch
and illustrates the intensity of maternal love. Her other name is Helic, which means "to turn" or "willow branch"; she thus has the power to
help with personal transformations. In mythology, Callisto became Ursa
Major while pregnant with Zeus's child. Artemis changed her into a bear, along with her son, who became Ursa Minor.
To Do Today: In
Korea, the festival of Chilsong-je begins at midnight with an offering
of white rice and water to the seven stars (Ursa Major). This gift
ensures Callisto's assistance when needed throughout the coming months.
If you can't stay up till midnight, just leave the rice and water in a
special spot before you go to bed.
From her celestial
home, Callisto stands ready to protect us in the new year and provide us with adaptability as a coping mechanism. To encourage this, carry a
silver or white stone bear, or a piece of dried willow wood. Bless this
token, saying:Callisto, release in me the power of flexibility.
Where'er I carry this little charm, keep me ever safe from harm. If these tokens aren't handy, you can substitute any white or silver item, or a hand-drawn picture of Ursa Major (the Big Dipper)..)0(

Homeric Hymn For Demeter
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Tue Jan 3, 2012 6:26 pm (PST)
When grief strikes a mother,
there is no end to it.
The earth parches, its
glittering waters gone.
Everything is barren. Cattle starve
for lack of grain. Nothing grows.
Even the gods are destitute,
even the altar flames blow out.
Such is a mother's grief, bitter
and endless, for her lost child.
~Homeric Hymn For Demeter
This was the night, in ancient Greece, when the Haloa was marked, a festival of the Mother Goddess Demeter's grief for the loss of her daughter Persephone, also called Kore, The Maiden. Stolen away by the god of the underworld, Persephone has been absent
from the earth for many months. During that time her mother, in her
intense sorrow, has withheld from humanity the gifts of grain and fruit.
During the winter we
feel the deprivation of sunlight and warmth. And during our soul's
winters, too, we feel distant from happiness. Yet life cycles back to
spring eventually, and our lives will cycle back toward happiness as
well. As the ancient Greek women did, let us mark today as a day when,
no matter how cold life seems, we know that new life will ultimately
spring anew.
