FW: Demons in the Academy session videos

This was one of the events at the American Academy of Religion in San
Francisco, but I didn't get to it because I was still at the archaeology
conference at that stage. Phoenix Rising is all about the intersection of
Western Esotericism, in practice, with scholarship. Sasha is Greek/British,
but lives in Greece and has wonderful contacts with many interesting Western
Esotericists.

Dear All,

The videos of all the lectures from the "Demons in the Academy" session at
the 2011 AAR conference are finally available here:
<http://phoenixrising.org.gr/en/events/past-events/3711-2/#.Txs8eG9c8y8>
http://phoenixrising.org.gr/en/events/past-events/3711-2/ . A link to
download a pdf of almost all the papers is also available on the same page.
Please feel free to spread the word, I know there a number of people
couldn't make it but were interested in hearing what was said. There is also
a full recording of the discussion session that followed.

Many thanks!

Hi Scott,

The key phrase here is "allowed to continue".

What you seem to be referring to is accountability. The pagan movement, here and overseas, has only three accountability mechanisms, only one of which would appear to be truly effective.

First, the court of peer opinion, on forums like these. People can decide for themselves how effective that has been in moderating behaviour and ensuring that those who receive media attention are qualified to do the role credit.

Second, intra-traditional accountability, respect for lineage etc. I can't comment about the effectiveness of this (I suspect we'd only hear about the failures, not the successes) except to say that this is irrelevant to the eclectics and solitaries that appear to make up the majority of the current pagan movement.

Third, peer review and standing among pagan academics. As there are genuine consequences for pagan academics who behave in such a way as to damage their credibility, I'd give this one a tick.

I haven't mentioned organisational accountability (i.e. my accountability to the PAN committee.) It exists, but is relevant only in so far as the organisation in question is worth a damn.

And of course, any push to create other, stronger, mechanisms of accountability for the pagan community as a whole would be protested ferociously on forums like this one - including, I dare say, by your good self.

Which puts us back where we started, I'd say.

Gavin.
