Harvest Necklace

Harvest Necklace

The months of August, September and October are typically the time for
harvest festivals, feasts and celebrations in the northern hemisphere.
It is a time when many cultures and spiritual paths celebrate the bounty
of the Earth, give thanks for the blessings of this bounty and honor their
deities connected with Harvest and the plant spirits.
It is a good time for us to reconnect with the cycles of Nature and
receive teachings from the nature spirits and plant spirits.  Study some
of the plant species in your area (foods, flowers, trees, etc) and then
take a walk outdoors and try to identify these species.  You will notice
that some of these plants are beginning to set seed, and it is very
interesting to look at all the different types of seed that exist in
Nature!

You can create a necklace of seeds to wear during a Harvest celebration,
or you may choose to use your "necklace" as an altar decoration or candle
garland. You can collect seeds from outdoors that are large enough to
string onto a necklace, or you can get seeds from the produce you buy at
the grocery store. Apples, gourds, squash, and corn are all good sources
for seeds.  Always use uncooked seeds (for instance, never use cooked
corn on the cob because the kernels will decompose on your necklace rather
than drying).  "Indian" corn can also be used, but since it is already dry
you will need to soak the kernels in warm water until they are soft enough
to string onto your necklace.  Larger seeds, like buckeyes and acorns, can
be used but they require the use of a thin drill bit to get a good hole in
them.

Use a sturdy, sharp needle and a heavy string such as dental floss,
beading string or hand quilting weight thread.  I like to double my string
so that the necklace is very sturdy.  Once strung, the seeds will dry and
they may shrink a bit so make your necklace longer than you would like to
account for this shrinkage.  Hang the strung seeds in a well ventilated
room until the seeds are dry. You can make the necklace long enough to
slip over your head or you can add a clasp on the ends of your necklace.
You can also wear them wrapped around your wrists or ankles several times
(bells can be added if you plan to dance at your festival).  You may also
wish to add bits of raffia or stripped, dry cornhusk by tying the bits
around your string at different intervals. You can also add any type of
charms or stones to your necklace that are used at autumn celebrations in
your tradition.....perhaps half of a black walnut, to represent Owl/Wisdom/Goddess.

Aromatherapy Tip of the Day  - Lavender Laundry Softener

Aromatherapy Tip of the Day  - Lavender Laundry Softener

All measures by volume (measuring cup).

Phase A:
32 oz. white vinegar
32 oz. baking soda
64 oz. distilled or purified water

Phase B: (optional)
1/2 oz. essential oil.
(I use either eucalyptus or lavender, to go with the laundry powder.)

Mix the baking soda into the vinegar over a sink or other contained area, in a large glass or plastic jar. The two

materials, when mixed together, will cause a "fizzing" reaction. Add water and essential oil and stir again.

As
gifts, dispense into plastic bottles and label with the following
directions: Use 1/4 cup per load. Add in rinse cycle Enjoy!

Homeric Hymn To Demeter

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:20 pm (PDT)

Old woman, where are you from?
Who is your family?
Why do you stay in the wilderness,
far away from the comforts of home?
Come to our shady halls, for there
women like you are resting,
and younger women too,
and they would welcome your presence.
~Homeric Hymn To Demeter

The
seven-day Eleusinian Mysteries were preceded and followed by a
fifty-five-day period of truce, when all conflicts between tribes and
nations ceased so that people could make the journey to the sacred site
and back in safety. So important was the celebration of the Mysteries
that even questions of territory and power were set aside for the
duration. The festival at Eleusis was said to have been older than even
the Olympic Games, its beginning in prehistory.

The Mysteries
expressed in ceremonial form the great myth of the loss of her
flower-daughter Persephone by the great earth mother Demeter. Stolen
from a meadow where she played with her maiden companion, Persephone was
held captive in the halls of death while her mother sought through the
world for her. In mourning her loss, Demeter caused all the earth's
plants to wither. Thus the ancients expressed the truth of the season:
that the earth mother is withdrawing her energy from vegetative growth.
Everything is dying, going down to Persephone. And, at this time, our
forebears were shown how rebirth is promised, even in the death that
surrounds us at this season.

Goddess of The Day:  Papa Harvest Moon Day (Various Locations)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:29 pm (PDT)

Goddess of The Day:  Papa
Harvest Moon Day (Various Locations)

Themes:  Providence; Thankfulness; Abundance; Earth; Fertility; Weather; Grounding; Harvest; Moon
Symbols:  Moon; Harvested Foods; Rainwater; Rocks

About
Papa:  Polynesians summon Papa in help in all earthly matters.  She is,
in fact, the earth mother who gave birth to all things by making love
to the sky.  To this day, the earth and sky remain lovers, the sky
giving its beloved rain for fertilization.  Papa is sometimes known by
the alternative title  Papa Raharaha, "supporting rock," through which
she provides foundations and sustenance for our body, mind, and spirit.

To
Do Today:  Harvest moon festivals take place during the full moon
closest to the autumnal equinox.  The full moon here represents the
earth (Papa) in all its abundance and the crop's maturity.  If it's
raining today, skip an umbrella for a moment and enjoy a little of the
sky's love for Papa.  Gather a little of the water and drink it to
encourage more self-love.

Carry any crystal or stone with you
today to manifest Papa's firm foundations in all your endeavors.  And
definitely integrate harvested foods into your menu.  Some that have
lunar affiliations include cauliflower, cabbage, cucumber, grapes,
lettuce, potatoes, and turnips.  Thank Papa for her providence before
you eat, then ingest whatever lunar qualities you need for that day or
for the rest of the year.

Get Ready for Mabon!

Day 5: Mabon Magic
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
Mabon is a time to do magic that relates to the hearth and home. If you've been harvesting your garden, spend some time in the kitchen doing a bit of cooking magic - after all, the very act of preparing a meal can be a ritual itself! Reconnect with your home after spending the summer outdoors, and try a ritual of protection to keep your property safe during the winter months. We'll also talk about how to raise magical energy with a drum circle, and the natural power found in the apples and grapes that are blossoming at this time of year!
Kitchen Witchcraft

There's a growing movement within modern Paganism known as kitchen witchery, and there's no better time than Mabon to brush up on your magical hearthkeeping skills. When you take the time to put meals together from the basic ingredients, you have a magical opportunity at hand. Here are some tips on how to incorporate magical living into your kitchen practices. Apple Magic

At Mabon, apples are everywhere. Orchards are blooming in full force, and if you get a chance to go picking, there's no end to the possibilities for a basket of apples in the hands of a practitioner of magic! Apples have long been used for divination, and are seen as a symbol of the harvest season. Read Full Article

Hearth & Home Protection Ritual

Mabon is a time of balance, and it is the time to celebrate the stability of the hearth and home. This ritual is a simple one designed to place a barrier of harmony and security around your property. You can do this as a family group, as a coven, or even as a solitary. If you live in an apartment, feel free to adapt the rite as necessary. The key here is to focus on the perimeter of your personal space, whether you have a half-acre yard, a big rural spread, or a downtown condo... Read Full Article

Grapevine Magic

Much like the apple, the grape is one of those fruits that has a significant amount of magic associated with it. First and foremost, the grape harvest -- and the wine that it produces -- has been associated with fertility deities like Egypt's Hathor, the lusty Roman Bacchus and his Greek counterpart, Dionysus. By the time of Mabon, grape arbors are flourishing. Vines, leaves and fruit are all usable items -- the leaves are often used in Mediterranean cooking, the vines for craft projects, and the grapes themselves are extremely versatile...Read Full Article

Raise Energy With a Drum Circle

Drum circles are a lot of fun, and if you've ever attended a public Pagan or Wiccan event, chances are good that somewhere, someone is drumming. You may not be able to see them, but you'll feel that pulsing rhythm off in the distance. In addition to being entertaining (and a great stress reliever), a drum circle serves another purpose - that of raising energy. Here are some hints for hosting a successful drum circle...Read Full Article

Tomorrow: Crafts and Creations

Tomorrow, we'll look at some craft ideas to celebrate the Mabon season, including a special blend of incense that you can use in ritual and ceremony.
