Mary, I just have to ask. why, oh WHY, is there fire retardant in the water
taps at Mt Franklin. When did this happen? It's *so inconvenient*!!!!!!
Isn't water itself a fire retardant? It seems crazy to me as it means,
essentially, that there is no water for drinking in this public, well.. It's
pretty much a park.

Hi all,

Just a notice that Parks Victoria have notified us that due to recently
changed by-laws (grrr!!) there can be no commercial venture that takes place
on the Mount. Therefore we will be unable to endorse a market unfortunately.
Sorry to all those that planned to sell sell sell, but there's nought to be
done about it alas.

It will still be an amazing weekend however!

Mary

Greetings Caroline.

I find it quite bizarre that any tap water would have a fire retardant added. But then it IS Victoria and I'm fairly sure that applicants need to have a certificate of insanity/incompetence from a doctor to get a job with any government instrumentality in charge of public lands and in particular bush fire management in that state. Some of their policies which directly caused loss of life during fires there not long back are good evidence of the level of incompetence involved.

I am a senior officer in the Qld Fire Service and ALL fire retardants need to be treated with caution. I would NOT be washing in, or drinking any water that had them added. Some are basically just detergent, but others contain some nasties. As I say , I find it incredible that it is added to the tap water. Now I am not saying it isn't fire retardant, but I wonder if it is one of those strong dyes that are sometimes added to recycled water to deter its use for drinking?

Bill

Hi Caroline & all

I have to say that I'd never before heard of fire being in water, but I just did some searching and found the following website which explains more:
http://www.health.vic.gov.au/environment/emergency_mgmnt/fire_retardants.htm

It's not clear to me whether these chemicals are intentionally added to the general water in bushfire prone areas, or maybe it just finds it's way there through run-off into reservoirs, etc. But it seems to me that taking one's own water would be well advised if there is a risk of exposure to otherwise contaminated water.

Wishing you all the best for the upcoming gathering.

Many blessings, Graham.

They are added to water when firefighting.

They are not added to reticulated water.

They may be added to the feed for distribution to fill points for
firefighters. Which means you may have water+retardant if you tap a
line meant for firefighting, but not one that simply carries water to
taps.

Most have a short useful life and would be rendered ineffective
sitting around in pipes.

I would suggest checking directly with the managing authority if the
water available onsite is potable.

Mount Franklin water is carted up and put in storage tank by the local CFA.I guess it depends on where THEY got it.

Hi All,

The water available at Mount Franklin is NOT POTABLE.

Therefore you must bring your own -the water supplied up there has fire retardant added to it. With the Wombat State forest located within kooee of the Mount, and the Mount itself being covered with an amazing variety of flora and timber, this will be why.

Cheers

Well, I guess you make your own choices about whether you wash your hands post lav experience for example....all we know is you just can't drink the stuff.

Its no big deal to cart your own water, we've done it for years, and as for said post lavatory hygienic practices-well there is always the nifty hand washes available in the supermarket or wipes.

Cheers

That’s probably why its not potable. All CFA tanks should have retardant in them when fighting fires. So if they’re carting water with their tanks there is going to be residual retardant in there.

The only reason I know about it is because there was some drama with our local CFA because they didn’t use retardant. They left it out because they wanted to be able to cart water for the locals when their rain water tanks ran dry.

Mount Franklin water is carted up and put in storage tank by the local CFA.I guess it depends on where THEY got it.
