I gave my son a Staffordshire Bull Terrier on his 16 th B/D. She died of old age and is buried in our front yard. He now has a 2yr old male. We have had several other pits over the years. We loved em all. They were kind, loving dogs.

Don't Worry, Wicca Isn't a Real Religion (A Rant)

Don't Worry, Wicca Isn't A Real Religion (A Rant)
October 4, 2011 by Star Foster

I have to give Andrew Bowen credit for being well-meaning. I do think he means well, but Project Conversion just makes me a little nauseous. Maybe I should feel better knowing he's given the same shallow treatment to other faiths before he hopped onto mine, but I don't. I think it's just as insulting to try to be a Jew for a month.
I think we need a Pagan version of Godwin's Law, perhaps I shall dub it Foster's Law: when any person attempts to give a shallow overview of any Pagan tradition they will inevitably proclaim we don't worship Satan, don't drink blood or don't sacrifice babies. Because Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and Buddhists all start off talking about their faith with this disclaimer, right?
Andrew has found himself a mentor, acquired his bling (because we all know bling is essential) and already called up some shit that scared the bejeesus out of him. But that's ok, because he's practicing a very laid-back, go-with-the-flow sort of Wicca. An anything goes Wicca, because we make it all up, right?

My Mentor stressed the importance of Wicca's exploratory nature, that the faith is literally what you make of it. That isn't to say that you should simply invent what you believe, but only that the foundation of your practice is founded upon your experience. What works, keep. What doesn't work, toss out. Live. Laugh. Learn. And don't worry too much about the particulars.

Yup, don't worry about the particulars. We're not a real religion, you know. You just make up what feels right. Over 60 odd years of innovation, tradition, theology, training and laws don't mean squat. You take 'er easy this month, buddy. A month of being Wiccan will be a piece of cake compared to that whole long month you spent as Jew.
Oh, and don't worry about the Book of Shadows. Those of us who've spent a year or more hand-copying lore and liturgy are not at all offended when you state:

There really is no written tradition as far as the faith is concerned and therefore most of the lore and learning is passed down orally.

The entire grimoire tradition that Wicca is a part of apparently doesn't exist, but hey when you're just taking a month to try on someone's religion, I'm sure you try not to deal with anything too heavy.

This is not the "written tradition" you are looking for... *Jedi hand wave* Foto: Midnightblueowl

And the worst part of this sadly shallow experiment? "I can tell you right now that I fully intend on crushing as many stereotypes as I can this month about Wicca because it's the only faith thus far that I've actually received negative comments about."
I seriously don't know whether to laugh or cry.
You know Andrew, I hope you derive some wisdom and benefit from your brief stint as a Wiccan. I'm probably being too hard on you. I realize you mean well and are just taking a reality-tv-esque journey through the practices and ethics of various religions without, you know, getting caught up in icky religious stuff. I shouldn't let this bother me, but it really does.

You see, I've been a Wiccanate Pagan for over a decade, actually went through a conversion process for years, and devoted the last few years to seriously grounding myself in the Wiccan religion. After over a year of study and service in a tradition, I'm about to be initiated this weekend. It's an ordeal process involving fasting, seclusion and then facing the unknown. Once I'm initiated, I will always be a Witch. There is no un-initiation ceremony. No backsies. I know people who have been Wiccan for decades, people who were raised Wiccan and people who are genuine seekers who will not be well served by your "build an altar and make shit up" approach.
Will your wife leave you because you're Wiccan?
Will you lose custody of children?
Will your child be reprimanded or discriminated against for being Wiccan?
Will you suddenly find you've been dismissed from your job the first day you wear a pentagram to work?
When you go to the grocery store, will it be "pents in" or "pents out"?
Will you sit down with your parents and tell them you're a Witch?
Will you be threatened with violence, have your property vandalized or have the cops called out because someone falsely reported you were sacrificing children in your backyard?
Nope, you're only doing this for a month. This is a vacation compared to wearing a turban for you. You're just regurgitating bad 101 info on Wicca, because we totally lack that on the internet. This is just a bit of Halloween season fluff before you tackle… what, Scientology? Shinto? Maybe even *gasp* Catholicism?
Besides, you've already moved on from Wicca to shamanism, which you read about in a book. Not that it makes any difference to you.
So don't take my being offended too seriously. Don't think that maybe you're missing growth opportunities if the "so-called Wiccan Rede" doesn't work for you, or if the whole concept of the God and Goddess unnerves you. I mean, if it doesn't work or feel right on first try, you abandon it right? 'Cause you just do what works for you, what feels right? After all, there's already another religion around the corner…
P.S. And kudos for finding a Wiccan tradition that's virtually unknown. Because if you were studying a known Witchcraft tradition, i.e. Dianic, Gardnerian, Alexandrian, Mohsian, Central Valley, Unicorn, Reclaiming, Feri, Ravenwood, Corellian, 1734, Roebuck, Georgian or Blue Star Wicca, or training with Aquarian Tabernacle Church, Church of All Worlds, Circle Sanctuary, N.E.C.T.W., NROOGD, or even Witch School, people might be able to call you on your crap. You might actually be representing a known Wiccan path and have some accountability.

The Crone

"I am the silence of midnight, and black velvet skies.
I am the shadow of vision that tempers your eyes.

I am the darkness of secrets that draw the veil thin,
The coldness of winter that shakes on your skin.

I am Grandmother, Weaver, Enchantress and Crone,
The Knowledge of Justice that strikes at the bone.

Destruction is mine when its time comes to be;
Death to the living, who all come to me.

Mine is the hand of the spinning of fates,
Mine is the passage between life's fragile gates.

I am the giver of magickal sight,
The slight sliver of waning moonlight.

I am the branch of ageless worn trees.
Hear my voice and know of me!

I am the Raven that flies through the woods,
Black silken wings opened up to the sky!
Bearer of closure, com-petition, and truth
Dreamscapes and Banshee am I!

Mine is the wisdom that comes in the dark.
Mine is the dying that calls to your flesh.
Mine are the hidden remains of your heart.
Mine is the mist that will take your last breath.

Give unto me what is old and outworn,
And I will return it with new life reborn.

Give me your sorrows, your sadness, your grief,
And in the dark hour, I will give thee relief.

I am the giver of death and rebirth,
Mine are the last things, before they are first.

See me in shadows, and in the dark sea.

I am the Crone!
Hear my voice and know me!"

Humpday Humor

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

You don't have to own a cat or be owned by one to appreciate this...

A couple was dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They turned on a
nightlight, turned the answering machine on the phone line, covered their pet
parakeet and put the cat in the backyard.

They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and
the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had put
out into the yard scoots back into the house.

They don't want the cat shut in the house because "she" always tries to eat
the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes inside to get
the cat. The cat runs upstairs, the man in hot pursuit.

The wife doesn't want the driver to know the house will be empty. She
explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. "He's just going
upstairs to say goodbye to my mother."

A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab. "Sorry I took so long,"
he says, as they drive away.

"Stupid bitch was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to
get her to come out! Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from
scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat ass downstairs and threw her out
into the back yard!"

The cabdriver hit a parked car...

Elder's Meditation of the Day

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 4, 2011 8:19 pm (PDT)

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"When that spirit comes, we don't ever ask questions. If I don't understand, I just hold onto it. Then later down the road, maybe in a couple of years, I understand what that spirit meant."

-- Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA

At certain spiritual events or happenings, it is possible for the spirits to come. Sometimes these spirits look like sparklers of light, sometimes you can feel them, sometimes they will look like live human beings. The spirits always come for a reason. When we deal with the spirit world, we need to be patient. The Great Spirit will tell us the meaning of these happenings when He is ready.

Great Spirit, let me be aware of Your presence.

Native American Prophecy

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 4, 2011 8:20 pm (PDT)

Native American Prophecy

Indian people have never lost their connection to Mother Earth. They believe that all creatures and things are her children, living on her giant turtle-back. However, these days there is much concern among the various tribes about the future of Mother Earth and her children.

Native American prophecies say that the two-legs and four-legs, the winged and creepy-crawlies, the rivers, stones, sky and plants are in trouble, because technology has taken over Nature and we are sleeping when we should be awake. The Indian people ask only for the chance to pass on their way of life and their love for the Great Spirit to their children and grandchildren. Therefore, they have much to say about the coming Earth changes.

The Hopi believe that Nature will speak to them through mighty winds, earthquakes, floods, seasonal changes, fluctuating weather patterns, and endangered wildlife, as well as spiritual and political unrest.

The Six Nations Iriquois Confederacy says that the Earth changes will be upon us when the trees start dying from the tops down. They predict that there will be no corn, that nothing will grow, and that the water will be unfit to drink. Then a great wind will come to cleanse the Earth and return it to its original state. Some Lakota believe that an increase in volcanic eruptions, such as Mount St. Helens, as well as hurricanes and earthquakes affecting the west, south and east coasts of the United States, are a sign.

Mayan tradition marks December 21, 2012, as the end of one vast cycle of time and the beginning of another. It is said that the great spiritual teacher Feathered Serpent may return during the transitional era, sometime between 1993 and 2012. The Hopi have a similar prophecy concerning Pahana, the "lost brother."

The Seminoles think that two things will happen to announce the coming Earth changes: their children will no longer speak the old language, and their people will forget how to make the sacred fire from flint and metal. Like the Hopi and Lakota, they also believe that an increase in earthquakes and volcanoes will show that certain prophecies may come to pass.

Despite the changing times we live in, Indians are hopeful that Mother Earth will bloom again and be healed of her woes, and that all people will unite in peace and harmony for many moons thereafter. Meanwhile, here's what you can do to help Mother Earth in her time of need:

*Nourish your connection with the Earth by learning to know and appreciate the heritage and ecology of your area.

*Use medicinal plants that are native to your region.

*Make conscious choices to preserve endangered species.

*Buy local produce and products.

*Support organic farmers and ranchers.

*Join an environmental organization.

*Use a natural alternative to household chemicals.

*Read labels and learn what to avoid.

*Grow an organic garden.

*Recycle!

Blood Moon

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 4, 2011 8:21 pm (PDT)

Blood Moon

The Full Moon in October is often called the Hunter's Moon. During ancient times, hunters were respected as the tribe's life-givers for they supplied the food. In Britain, Herne the Hunter is a deity of the "Dark Forest," Lord of the woodland and its animals, Here oversees all of nature and the results of fertility for both the natural world and men. Herne, described as a large, virile man crowned with the antlers of a stag and purportedly wears furs and carries a wooden bow, is often accompanied by a pack of hunting dogs.

As our nights grow noticeably longer and autumn commences, consider working with Herne for courage and the ability to "hunt down" your path in life. His wisdom is vast, and, if you listen, he can help you find your way while traveling along your own magical path, even in the darkest of times.

As the Hunter's Moon lights up the October sky,
Here protect me, the dark time of the year is nigh,
Help me to find my own path, and to gain knowledge true,
May I walk with wisdom and strength in all that I do.

Working With Magic Mirrors

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 4, 2011 8:21 pm (PDT)

Working With Magic Mirrors

The magic mirror is one of the oldest tools employed in both divination and spell casting. The classic magic mirror is a dark concave surface of reflective material. You can construct one for yourself by using the curved glass face of a clock and painting the convex side with glossy black paint. Antique stores are a good source for old clocks with rounded glass faces.

Traditionally, the preparation of a magic mirror begins on the night of a Full Moon. It is particularly effective to do this when the Moon is in the sign of Pisces, Cancer, or Scorpio. Consult an astrological calendar for Moon signs and phases.

Once you have painted the glass and it has thoroughly dried, then bathe the mirror in an herbal brew of equal parts of rosemary, fennel, rue, vervain, ivy, and walnut leaves or walnut bark, If you want to hold to the oldest of traditions, then pour some sea foam into the mixture. If you are unable to obtain these items, consult a book on magical herbs and substitute other herbs associated with psychic vision, oracles, or divination. While the glass is still bathing in the position, hold both your hands out over it, palms down, and say:

I awaken the sleeping spirits of old,
Whose eyes reveal all that in darkness is told,
Give to me visions within this dark well,
And make this a portal of magical spell.

Visualize a silver mist forming around the mirror. Take a deep breath, then slowly exhale outward upon the potion. Mentally envision that your breath moves the silver mist into the mirror. Repeat this three times. Next, remove the mirror from the potion and dry it off thoroughly. Prop the mirror up vertically with a sturdy object and make sure the support does not obscure the mirror. Hold you right hand out in front of you so that your palm is facing the convex side of the mirror. Then place the left palm facing the concave side, about three inches away from the glass surface. You are now ready to magnetize the mirror to your aura. With the left hand begin making a circular clockwise motion staying within the dimensions of the mirror. Do this for a few minutes and then perform the same motion on the convex side of the mirror with the right hand. The opposite hand is always held still while the moving hand circulates.

Once completed, take the mirror out beneath the Full Moon so that its light falls upon the concave side. Slowly fill the glass to the brim with the herbal potion. Hold it upward toward the moon, almost level with your eyes. Don't worry about any spillage that may take place. While looking at the Moon, allow your eyes to unfocus slightly. If you are doing this correctly, you will see three lines of light seemingly emanating from the Moon. Continue to squint until the vertical line coming from the bottom of the Moon seems to touch upon the mirror. Once the moonbeam is touching the mirror, speak these words:

Three are the lights
Here now that are seen
But not to all
The one in-between,
For now the Enchantress
Has long come at last
To charge and empower
This dark magic glass.

Quickly close your eyes so that you break eye contact. Open them again looking down towards the glass. Kneel and pour out the potion upon the ground in the manner of libation. Then rinse the mirror off with fresh clear water, and dry it thoroughly. The final step in preparing the mirror is to glue a strip of snakeskin to the back side. The snake is a symbol of the Underworld , which has long been associated with divination, the oracle, and fate. Once the glue has dried under the snakeskin, wrap the mirror in a silk cloth to protect its lunar magnetism. Never allow sunlight to fall directly upon the mirror. the mirror is now ready to be used for divination or spell casting.

Mirror Divination

The technique for this is a very ancient one common among shamanistic traditions. Divination is the ability to see what patterns are forming and becoming manifest. What you see is actually what is likely to occur if nothing changes the pattern being woven in the astral material.

The following technique will provide you with the basic foundation for performing the art of divination known as scrying. Place two candles as your source of light, so that the light does not reflect directly upon the mirror. They should be off to the side about a foot or so, flanking the sides of the mirror.

Next you will perform a series of hand passes over the mirror, slowly and deliberately. Magically speaking, the right hand is of an electrical nature and active charge, and the left hand is of a magnetic nature and receptive charge. A left handed pass will attract an image and cause its formation, and the right-handed passes will strengthen or focus the image. Begin by making left-handed passes over the mirror, in a clockwise circle, just a few inches above it with palms open and facing down. Stop and gaze into the dark reflection--not at it but into it.

You will need to repeat these passes as you await the vision. Alternate between the left hand and the right hand. This requires patience and time. Use your intuition as you sit before the mirror. Make sure the setting is quiet and free of distractions.

The magic mirror can also be used for spell casting. This is a simple technique involving reflections or sigils. Light two candles and set them off to each side of the mirror about three inches away. Place a photograph, image, or sigil representing the focus of your spell so that it reflects in the mirror. Gaze into the mirror and imagine the desired effect. Make up a short rhyme if you like so you can state your desire without breaking your concentrations. If you desire to be rid of an influence or situation, you can sigilize it and then burn the sigil, gazing into the reflected flames in the mirror.

Another effective method is to gently blow incense smoke onto the mirror as you gaze at the reflection. Allow yourself to stir your emotions, then deeply inhale, and slowly exhale across a stick of incense. Imagine the smoke to be a magical vapor carrying your will. As it touches the mirror, imagine the target responding as you wish it to. Do this a total of three times. Creating a short rhyme for your spell can be helpful in this technique as well. Once you are finished, combine the melted wax, ashes from the incense, and the photo or image you used. Dispose of this in a manner in keeping with the elemental nature of your spell. Matters of love and feelings generally belong to water. Creative or artistic ventures belong to the air. Situations of loss, separation, or destruction are associated with fire. Endurance, strength, fertility, and stability are typically linked to earth.

When disposing of your ritual remnants, bear in mind that tossing something into moving water will merge it with the water element, and so connect it on a macrocosmic level with the higher nature of the spell. This act will help to empower your ritual of magic. For any earth-related spells that you try, you should bury your object afterward in an area somehow connected to your target. Spells related to the element of fire, on the other hand, should involve burning the links. Finally, for an air-related spell, make sure to use steam or smoke.

The Secret Saboteur

The Secret Saboteur: When You're Feeling Blue

Listening to your heart is not simple. Finding out who
you are is not simple. It takes a lot of hard work and
courage to get to know who you are and what you want.

Sue Bender

After self-nurturance, listening to the whispers of our hearts is probably the hardest task we've ever attempted. Some days the Simple Abundance path comes naturally. You realize that all you have is all you truly need. Other days, it's impossible to quiet down the wants. It seems as if you have too many unfilfilled desires and delayed dreams. You're sick and tired of waiting for inner changes to manifest themselves on the outside.

When the dark days come, we need to remember that even if a secret saboteur--depression--is at work temporarily derailing our progress, each day offers us a gift if we will only look for it. Sometimes we're sad for a very apparent reason--an overwhelming loss, for example, or worries about money or health. Other times we don't know why we feel so bad, which makes us feel even worse. It could be for a million different reasons --an appalling lack of appreciation (by ourselves and by others), exhaustion, the weather, hormones, the advent of the flu, or simply part of the process of personal transformation.

I wish I could tell you that spiritual and creative growth was smooth, predictable and without pain. "All the best transformations are accompanied by pain," Fay Weldon tells us. "That's the point of them." Personal growth also comes in spasms: three steps forward, two steps back, and then a long plateau when it seems as though nothing is happening. But it's important to realize that this dormant period always seems to precede a growth spurt. Unfortunately, during the dormant period we very often become depressed and decide to give up.

It's on days like this that you can barely get yourself dressed and out the door. You look like hell and couldn't care less. You can't remember if you took a shower yesterday or when the last time was you washed your hair. The children's voices are insistent and yours is shrill. You haven't any patience. Life seems bleak, not bright with promise. It's taking more work than you expected to cope.

When dark clouds hover, what should you do besides holding on and riding out the storm? You have two choices. One is simply to give in, stop resisting. You've got the blues, so sing them, baby. But before you do, ask for grace. Then have a good cry. Take a nap and try to sleep it off. Indulge--without guilt--in something purely for medicinal reasons, like a piece of cheesecake or a bowl of Haagen-Dazs. Have comfort food for dinner. Put the kids to bed early. Soak in a hot tub. Find five things for which to be grateful. Turn out the light.

The alternative blues kicker is to shift gears. Ask for grace. Call a good friend and talk. Put on the kettle for a fresh pot of tea.

No matter which route you take, within twenty-four hours, the day will be over. Tomorrow should be better. But if it's not, nor the next day, or the next, then know it's okay to ask for help from friends, a support group, a therapist, a doctor, or your Higher Power. Dark days come to all of us. Yet discouraging days bring with them golden opportunities when we can learn to be kind to ourselves. Believe it or not, today offers you a hidden gift, if you're willing to search for it.

Samhain on Three Levels

Samhain on Three Levels

Samhain, the month that heralds the rule of darkness, no other festival in the old Celtic year fires the imagination in the supernatural mysteries of life and death. Like all Celtic festivals, it was celebrated on three levels. On the material level it was the time of stock-taking on supplies for the winter ahead, bringing people and cattle in from the hills and glens to their winter quarters and re-tying the social bonds of kinship. This level of the festival was practical and necessary but even so it conformed to the religious philosophy, that all were part of the great clan spirit that was invoked at this time of year.

To be alone and missing at this dangerous time was to expose your spirit to the perils of the chaotic Otherworld. In present times the importance of this part of the festival has diminished for most people living in this country, but you should try to see this from the stand- point of a tribal people for whom a bad season meant facing a long winter of famine in which many would not survive to the spring.

On the second level this was a very inner time for the people. As a warrior race Death was never very far away, yet to die was not the tragedy it is in modern times. What was of great importance to these people was to die with honor and to live in the memory of the clan and be honoured at the great feast Fleadh nan Mairbh (Feast of the Dead) which took place on Samhain Eve.

This was the most magical time of the year; it was the day which did not exist. During this night the great shield of Skathach was lowered, allowing the barriers between the worlds to fade and the forces of chaos to invade our realms of order.

At this time the Spirits of the Dead and those yet to be born of the Clan walked freely amongst the living. Food and entertainment were provided in their honor. In this way the Clan was at one with its past, present and future. This level of the festival was never totally subdued by Christianity and survives today as Hallowe'en. It has been adopted by most as the sum and total of Samhain.

Finally, on the third level of Cosmic event, the rising of Pleiades, the winter stars, heralds the supremacy of night over day, the dark half ruled by the realms of the moon. In the three days preceding the Samhain month the Sun God Lugh, who was maimed at Lughnassadh, dies by the hand of his Tanist (his other self) who is the Lord of mis-rule. Lugh passes through the boundaries of the worlds on the first day of Samhain. His Tanist is a niggardly King and though he shines brightly in the winter skies he gives nothing of his warmth to the land. He cannot warm the north wind which is the breath of the Crone, Cailleach Bheare. In this we see the ageless battle between the light and dark, the forces of growth and decay, life and death, but never good and evil. Between these two great balanced realms of Sun and Moon lies the ordered universe which sustains all life in this realm.

The cyclic harmony of seasonal dominance of these realms means on our level that neither Life nor Death can ever hold permanent sway.
