Again, late to topic. My pardon, have been ill.

I have many household and land spirits. Some of them are constructs
--- I created them myself via magical means to act as household
guardians --- and some of them are summoned elementals. Others are
creatures which lived in the various places I've been and elected to
move with me as I changed homes. The main household entity, simply
called House, is a collection of the cumulative energies of all the
places in which I have lived. He gradually took on a personality and
preferences of his own as well as his own gender. House has his own
altar, the main one, in my office/temple room. When we celebrate
Yule, we have a family tradition: nothing major is bought for
individuals. Instead, the gifts are for House: something needed or
something to make the home a more comfortable and cozy place to be.

The next oldest are my dragons. These I summoned up when I first
started exploring paganism (and yes, I'm lucky I got benevolent
beings!). Amethyst, a purple (who likes to be addressed as Amy), has
gotten rather old and lazy. She will not go off property any longer
and sleeps most of the time unless needed to defend the place.
Hersham (Hersh, or Hershey in a playful mood), is either a brown or a
bronze (I never could tell). That one has healing properties as well
as guardianship. I seldom see the other two, but they're there. One
has no elemental alignment; I managed to attract a little silver chaos
dragon who positively delights in causing things to be misplaced and
in making random wet spots on the floors.

I have four gargoyles, one for each of the four corners, which I
constructed magically myself.

I also have an assortment of brownies, gnomes, and fae folk who
elected to move with me each time I changed residence.

When we moved here, I encountered some Seminole entities and Timucuan
who came with the land. These will manifest physically if they're
curious --- they love the 'iron horse' I drive and it's not unusual
for several of them to go riding on errands. You can smell them,
since they don't bathe and wear uncured skins. Sometimes they leave
offerings. I'll find shells or plants that don't grow here any more on
my doorstep. I keep them happy with a promise: I'll bring horses
here (this tribe never had them) and plant Three Sisters (they never
had that either).

Later, when I got involved with my Voudun practicing girlfriend and
she moved here, I got Legba. He appears as a wizened old man dressed
in African tribal loin cloths or tattered coveralls stirring a
cauldron in a particular clearing. The stirring stick has a shrunken
head on it. Accompanying him are a dead woman and her child whose
story I know but am not at liberty to tell. We periodically leave
offerings of red beans and rice, tobacco, and bourbon for him.

I am not yet familiar enough with the loa to identify them all.
There's a big (seven feet tall at least) muscular black man, barefoot
and dressed in denim coveralls, who works with the garden, small
creatures, and plants. There's Frieda, who appears as a big, fecund
slave woman with her red kerchief and broad, strong shoulders and
hips. She reminds me periodically to be strong and to do nice,
frivolous things for myself like wearing perfume or painting nails.

I dont know if i posted this already or not, My mind is going to crazy. I have a spirit at work. Im not sure who it is, but i heard that the building my office is was a funeral home. I came in work 1 morning about 2 yrs ago and it was only me here (None of the guys trucks were on the pavement). I did my usual unlock the door turn on the lights turn the alarm off and then went to my desk to turn on my computer. All the sudden out of the corner of my eye in the back of the show room i seen a shadow walk from right to left. It freaked me out so bad I thought that someone was back there. I actually ran across the street to my cousins uncles house and woke him up to go and make sure no one broke in. I did keep my eye on the front door to make sure no one came out of my office. OMG Scared the crap out of me. I havent seen him or her since. After that I started asking around about the building and that is how i found out about the funeral home. Thanks for letting me ramble...AV!

What a beautiful butterfly, Lady Nightshayde!  I collect things with butterflies on them, my latest being a colorful butterfly pendant.  They are truly magical creatures, the changes they make during their lifespan.

I have always been fond of butterflies, too. My daughter Amber has a beautiful butterfly tattoo to honor the memory of her daughter Hannah Marie.

I believe this is why I feel drawn to butterflies also, the changes that have taken place in my lifetime, even the way I have changed personally.  Just like with butterflies and the way they change over time, people are able to do this also.   I am one of them (thankfully).

Rose Aradne' Samhain Magic Charm

Posted by: "Gary Reese" hyperreal69@yahoo.com   hyperreal69

Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:11 am (PDT)

Rose's Halloween Charm Activation Spell

What you'll need:

* A red candle

* Something to carve it with, like a butter
knife or needle.

* Your favorite annointing oil. I like
frankincense oil. Or myrrh.

* Your favorite "luck herb". I use
frankincense. You can also use rosemary,
thyme, spearmint, nutmeg...

* A pot of boiling water (keep it in
the kitchen, don't put it on your
altar)

* A special piece of jewelry, a charm,
or a figurine of some sort.

* A small bag to put the charm in.
Something you can easily carry in a
pocket or purse...

STEP 1: Setup a basic altar. Decorate
it with anything representing Samhain
or Halloween. Get creative... the more
fun you have with this, the better the
spell will work.

STEP 2: Carve the red candle with your
name, and deepest desire. Also carve
a symbol in the candle representing
an area of your life you wish to
improve.

Example: a dollar sign for wealth, a
heart for love... a happy face for
general happiness.

STEP 3: Annoint your candle with the
oil.

STEP 4: Walk with your candle,
charm bag, and herb to the kitchen where
the water is boiling.

STEP 5: Set the candle near the pot,
and light it.

STEP 6: Sprinkle a small handful of
the herb into the water. Let the
steam rise.

STEP 7: Pass your charm bag alternately
through the steam and the candle smoke.

Spend 5 minutes doing this.

STEP 8: As you pass the charm bag, imagine
what life would be like if the specific
area of your life was exactly how you
wish it to be. How would you feel?

STEP 9: Sleep with the charm bag under
your pillow, and allow yourself to dream.

--------------------

Keep this charm bag by your bed all through
this month... and each time we do a spell
or ritual this October, have it with you.

Not only will luck begin to flow into
your specified area of life... but this charm
will tap into Magick energy from the beyond,
only possible this time of year.

It's a wonderful time of year... drink up
every last drop of Magick you can.

There's enough to last a lifetime here...

I always have recurring dreams and/or continuation of dreams during the month of the Blood Moon, and even more-so around the full Moon. You should start a Book Of Mirrors in which you record your dreams and see if your subconscious or a deceased loved one is trying to tell you something.

I have been going through a transitional phase in my life, so it's probably normal.    Hopefully they will disappear as I continue on my path of healing.   I went through a long period of depression, but I'm being treated with a medication that helps (a side effect of the med is that I dream a LOT more, and they are quite intense).

A good subject, Gary, and I have dreamed  about and psychically "seen" deceased family members appearing to me occasionally to bring a message of encouragement or reporting how things are going for them in their "world".

I find this so awesome! I too use a three ring binder and plastic sleeves. I have mine broken into categories such as Gods/ddes', rituals performed, rituals I want to perform, devotions, etc... and it is very easy to move something like a rite you want perform after putting a date and time on it into rituals performed. EXCELLENT! You know what they say about great minds...they think alike lol

                                 Scrapbooking Your BOS

For most Witches, one of the first things you do when you begin to practice the Craft is start your own Book of Shadows.  Whether it is a simple, spiral-bound notebook or a bound journal, your first BOS is an important part of your growth and development.

Most of us have seen Books of Shadows we'd love to have: those thick, ancient tomes of wonderful knowledge that look as though they contain the very secrets of the universe.  Who can forget the gorgeous books from the TV show Charmed and the movie Practical Magic?  Of course, those are designed by prop departments and are entirely fictional, but I've seen some pretty impressive real-life Books that only serve to intimidate the heck out of me.

I'm not much for bound journals (I never seem to want to write in them; being an author, I'm always wanting to change things), and somehow a plain old notebook wasn't special enough.  So I went the middle way most of us busy Witchy moms do and I got a three-ring binder, a paper hole punch, and some plastic page protectors. What I didn't have page protectors for, I printed and punched holes in.  Needless to say, my Book was pretty boring looking.  Well, I did use some colored copier paper from time to time.

Then my mom introduced me to scrapbooking.  I've never been much for keeping my photo albums up to date, so even though it looked like so much fun, I figured it wasn't going to work for my pictures.  However, what I did see when I entered my first scrapbooking shop was an awful lot of cool stuff to make my BOS less boring--particularly the patterned papers and albums that looked like bound books.  Of course, the stickers, ribbons, sparkly inks, and stamps certainly helped as well.

So what occurred to me was that here was a way to make a plain BOS fun and unique while still creating a document that could be passed down through the family.  A major point of scrapbooking is preservation, so when you're getting supplies from scrapbook shops, you're nearly guaranteed to find things that are made to last and preserve the effort you're putting into your pages, which is exactly what we want when making a family or coven BOS.

Other folks have figured this out as well, so now there are even specific embellishments and other supplies created specifically for scrapbooking your Book of Shadows.  I've included some of these resources at the end of this article.

I recommend you start with a three-ring binder, which makes it easy to change around and remove pages as you go.  You can also do this with specially designed scrapbooking albums, but the pages tend to be harder to rearrange since these are built like photo albums. Albums can be a more permanent solution once you have figured out your preferred arrangement.  Specialty albums are also more expensive than your standard three-ring binder and are more commonly available in larger sizes than standard letter size.  It is becoming more common to find albums designed for digital scrapbooking now, which use the more common paper sizes.  This is a nice alternative if you'd like something that looks a bit more like a book, rather than an office binder.  I've tried both methods and prefer beginning with the binder.  This also gives you more money to spend on embellishments and paper.

Once you have your binder, you'll need plastic page protectors.  These are necessary if you plan to use 3D elements like clips, buttons, ribbons, brads--anything that will rise off the surface of the paper.  The page protectors keep your embellishments from getting damaged by the rest of the contents of the book, as well as keep decorations in position.  There are methods for making page protectors work with advanced techniques like double-page layouts and interactive elements, but those are a bit complex for our beginner Scrapbook of Shadows.

Along with the binder and page protectors, you'll need paper.  It's best to start with card stock paper, which is thick enough to support your decorations.  (Paper is graded in weights: card stock begins at 60 lbs. while regular paper is 20 to 25 lbs.)

If you decide to get some decorative paper as well, 20 lb. paper is fine.  There is a wide variety of decorative paper from which to choose--you will also find different kinds of papers, like parchment, mulberry paper, and even papyrus in some stores.  All of this can be used subtly or to make aspects of the page jump out.  You can print or write a poem on decorative paper and layer it on your background page with a slip of contrasting mulberry paper in between for a lovely effect.

The rest of your supplies will be relatively simple.  If you're going to handwrite in your book, invest in a good set of acid-free pens in standard colors.  You may need a 3-hole punch if you choose not to use page protectors.  A glue stick is another must--particularly when using semi-transparent papers like mulberry.  Glue sticks are less messy and dry more quickly than liquid glues.  (An acid-free glue stick will also help preserve your pages.)  If you choose to use larger and heavier elements, you will need glue dots, which are designed for this purpose.  You will need regular paper scissors and a craft knife for detail work.  The last tool you need to get will be a paper cutter.  These range from the big office cutters to simple sliding cutters that you can find in any scrapbooking and craft department.  (Make sure the sliding crafts cutter is at least 11.5 inches long and can handle the largest paper you're using.)

From here on you will be selecting decorative elements based on what your page will be about.  I would not recommend just going to the scrapbook or crafts section of your local shop and just buying whatever looks cool or pretty!  That adds up fast and you end up with a lot of elements you may or may not be able to use in the long run.  Even "starter packs" of embellishments can be hit or miss (although starter packs of paper is a good idea as long as you stick to the basics).

I'd start simple and plan one page at a time.  For instance, if you're going to do holidays, pick a sabbat and think of the colors you want to use.  Start with your foundation paper in a basic color and build the page from them.  If you're going to use written information, decide whether you're going to handwrite it or print it from your computer, and plan accordingly.  Handwritten information will tend to take up more space, so you may end up needing more than one page.  Then you can add whatever decorations you like.  Stickers, little 3D decorations, frames, and ribbons all dress up a page and are fun to collect, particularly in themes like holidays and special occasions.

You may find yourself creating more pages on a subject than you would in a simple printed Book of Shadows, since scrapbooking encourages journaling and sharing memories.  You may decide to include a ritual for a holiday on one page, another page decorated with recipes, and another with pictures from your last celebration of that sabbat.  Scrapbooking brings out creativity you may not have realized you had.

There are plenty of resources out there: magazines, books, Internet sites, and podcasts that will help you learn more about this exciting and fun hobby.  They will teach you various methods and styles of scrapbooking, such as digital, vintage, and shabby chic; show you different styles of laying out pages; and introduce you to other scrappers around the world, including other Wiccans scrapping their Books of Shadows!

I hope I've given you enough information to get started on creating your own totally unique Book of Shadows.  Here are some sites you can visit to generate ideas and kick-start the scrapbooking process.

I just call it common sense and I practice. I learn when the leaves
ought to turn, what flowers are out during which times of year, what
the birds' migration routes are and when they're nesting or tending
young, the ecology and habitat of the animals and their individual
habits. I don't use them as omens, though, not totally. By observing
these things I can speculate on length of seasons, what and when to
plant, whether or not there will be enough water, and whether or not
we'll have a cold winter (cold winters are good here in Florida
because they mean certain crops which couldn't otherwise be planted
can be put in the ground; it also gives warning so you can tend your
citrus and nut crops properly). I watch what the animals do and how
they behave as indicators of whether the next hurricane will be
nothing or whether I ought to start packing and get out while I still
can. Of course, cross referencing all of this is also the symbolism.
Dragonflies and butterflies are particularly important to me and I
learned a lot by learning about the garden spiders which kept
appearing, including respect for the animal itself.

Again, I am late but I will add my commentary.

You hate humans? Then you must also hate animals. Like it or not --- and I
will never understand why more pagans don't see it this way --- we're also
animals, and we're not much different from the other animals at that.
People tend to idolize animals, especially certain species, but it isn't
true that they all act merely on instinct taking nothing more than they
need.

- Chimpanzee groups will purposely pick at, beat on, and even rape another
member of their group who isn't as physically strong as they are

- hyenas and many other canids will eat off a carcass until they throw up
and then proceed to soil the carcass with that and their wastes so that no
one else can use it even if there's still useable meat on the bone

- some species of grazers such as giraffes will graze their habitat into
the ground and then start destroying trees in the area

The point is, no particular animal on the planet is perfect or makes a
utopia. You hate humans? What about your gods and goddesses then? You are
made in their image and with the spark that gives you some of their
attributes. They weren't perfect either, which is why we are not perfect.
Hating something makes no sense nor does idealizing something you don't
completely understand. Animals can and are capable of environmental
destruction and of the type of atrocities we visit upon ourselves.

To the point at hand: I have several problems with this particular Act.
There ought to have been limits to the sizes of the devices for residential
areas. There is absolutely no reason for the large scale panels to be used;
the types which generate energy for a house can be mounted nearly flat to
the top of the house and are no more than one foot wide and twice as long.
Honestly, unless you live somewhere which gets lots of wind (like Kansas)
turbines are useless. They're also dangerous; maintaining them is a
difficult job which requires a professional. They fall down or the blades
break off often. That is not something I would want in or near my home.

Instead, why not make a community initiative to get businesses and co-ops to
use these technologies? Our electrical co-op, sadly, is still dependent on
coal. Florida has none so it's an added expense to have it brought here. We
do, however, have lots of solar power if it could only be used. I'd pay the
initial higher bill to cover installation because in the long term my energy
bills would go down, not up, and it's renewable as well as clean.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with hydroelectric power if it's managed
properly. It's a renewable resource which does not pollute the environment
or disrupt the flow of the rivers which serve it. In fact, it becomes
essential to keep the river healthy if you want the hydro plant to continue
functioning properly.

There are lots of other things which can be done which are environmentally
friendly and green. I'm not certain that giant solar panels --- they're
dangerous too if not properly installed --- installed by people who don't
know what they're doing and are just latching on to the technology as the
latest, greatest way to make money are the answer. Better yet, start a
community energy co-op. Most suburbs and residential complexes have open
land that isn't being used. Pay a professional to evaluate the site, put up
the big panels and turbines if they're feasible and then hook the entire
community into the grid.

So many other solutions than forcing people to accept these things in their
neighborhoods and so many other places energy could be put, if you'll excuse
the pun, than hatred. It takes so much effort to hate.

First off, remove all mucus producing foods from the diet. These tend
to be things with dairy in them: milk, yogurt, ice cream, even some
cold foods which don't have dairy in them. You might also increase
your consumption of 'warming' foods but be careful! You can upset
your stomach and even poison yourself with too much cayenne and other
peppers used as such. Hot clear liquids such as teas and broths are
good for this. Add a finger of ginger root and a splash of the
hottest hot sauce you can find or sprinkle with cayenne pepper and
drink the broth that way.

If you've got a vaporizer or steamer, try eucalyptus leaves. These
work for asthma attacks as well, even severe ones.

The best you can do for yourself, however, is plenty of rest and
fluids of all types. Increase the vitamin C intake. Echinacea might
help, but don't take it for more than seven days in a row. Zinc
tablets work well too. If you can afford an OTC medication, Mucinex
works well. It's based off a plant extract which does two things: it
loosens congestion and forces the body to expel the mucus. Most of my
patients are well enough to return to work twelve to twenty-four hours
after taking it.
