>>I like to read on the bus on a weekend away, on an aircraft and generally
out in the sun on a Sunday with a glass or two (or three or four) of wine
near me.<<

Helgs, how can you read and drink wine at the same time? I can't do it at
all, alcohol makes me dumb!

Yes and no Tish.

Obviously I can see the value and enjoyment of owning a hard copy rare tome;
but in this day and age of trying to leave a lighter footprint on the
planet, the majority of my reading is done electronically. Sure there's the
pollution aspect of making the readers in the first place, but once they're
made, they're costless. I can charge the darn thing up thru the ciggy
lighter while I'm driving the LPG car around and I'm not using up trees each
time I buy a new book. There's very few moving parts to brake or wear out
( and nothing a electronic hobbyist cant cope with repairing !! ).

Someone else weighed in with 'liking the feel' of a book. Yes, I love the
smell and used to love the feel of a book. But Arthur Itis and the Carpel
Tunnels have decreed I live otherwise.

Can I offer a reading suggestion ( for all ). An Isaac Asimov book called
Sol, part of The Foundation series ( an entertaining read as a stand alone
book, without having to read the whole series ). Considering it was written
way back when ( late '60's me thinks ) It's mind blowing the parallels in
his fictional future vision and what is now our 'Reality'

xposting - Circle magazine

Greetings All

(Apologies for the xposting)

I don't know how many actually subscribe to the US magazine CIRCLE,
produced by Selena Fox's Circle Sanctuary - but if you do, in the
current Fall issue, my article on sound can be found.

http://www.circlesanctuary.org/circle/

Not a scholarly magazine, but then again, I am not a scholar myself ...
however I am delighted all the same so though I would share with those
who are interested.

Congratulations Frances! I used to subscribe to this magazine but my
subscription recently ran out. I'm disappointed as I would have loved to
read your article.

Many smiles and congrats to you,

Amethyst

>Another thing that surprises me is the lack of containment (ie a coffin). Being a horror movie enthusiast, her burial looks like a recipe for enabling her rising from the dead, despite not being to talk.

Let's take a look at a culture that had a few thousand years of belief in not only the immortality of the soul, but the resurrection of the body - Egypt. They had a serious "preparing the soul/body for rising from the dead" routine. So what did they do? The Pharaohs, tehir loved ones and senior officials were mummified, first-off. This involved pulling out all their internal organs, necessary for physical life, out of their body, placing them in jars, sealing the jars carefully, and eventually putting them in a different room to the rest of the body, making it extraordinarily difficult for a resurrected body to function. Then they mummified the bodies: anointing them with unguents to attract the attention of the Afterlife, dessicating them with natron so that any chance of organic and muscular function becomes impossible (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natron), painting the insides of the hollowed-out body cavities with something a lot like modern road-tar again stiffening the bodies against future movement and against the possibility of life even on a bacterial scale let alone a human scale, then wrapping them in flax-and-payrus-based linens plastered down with glue produced by boiling bones down, against the air (necessary for breathing after ressurection) and once again, against movement. Then they stuck that mummy in a huge solid-silver (sometimes gold) sarcophagus, with a lid weighing at least two tonnes, to make sure they couldn't get out. Then they placed that sarcophagus inside another one, usually of basalt or pink granite, even larger and with a similarly heavy lid. Then there was a third, in "cheap" grey or white granite, with again an enormously heavy lid, far too heavy for a reanimated corpse without its innards and with chemically stiffened muscles to be able to lift. Then they stuck the baboushka-doll sarcophagi and the canopic jars with the internal organs in two far distant chambers UNDER MANY MILLIONS OF TONNES OF ROCK! (the pyramids in pre-Ptolemaic Egypt, the underground burial chambers in Ptolemaic Egypt). With a fervent belief in the resurrection of the body, they did everything possible to limit the body and prevent it being able to move *anywhere*! That is what a burial looks like, if you want them to rise from the dead. This tradition lasted thousands of years. <hides grin> Nisaba
