Halloween Witch

Halloween Witch Each year they parade her about, the traditional Halloween Witch.
Misshapen green face, stringy scraps of hair, a toothless mouth
beneath her deformed nose. Gnarled knobby fingers twisted into a
claw protracting from a bent and twisted torso that lurches about on
wobbly legs. Most think this abject image to be the creation of a
prejudiced mind or merely a Halloween caricature. I disagree, I
believe this to be how Witches were really seen. Consider that most Witches were women, were abducted in the night,
and smuggled into dungeons or prisons under the secrecy of darkness
to be presented by light of day as a confessed Witch. Few if any saw
a frightened normal looking woman being dragged into a secret room
filled with instruments of torture, to be questioned until she
confessed to anything suggested to her and to give names or what ever would stop the questions. Crowds saw the aberration denounced to the world as a self-proclaimed
Witch. As the Witch was paraded through town en route to be burned,
hanged, drowned, stoned or disposed of in various other forms of
Christian love all created to free and save her soul from her
depraved body, the jeering crowds viewed the results of hours of
torture. The face bruised and broken by countless blows bore a hue of
sickly green. The once warm and loving smile gone replaced by a
grimace of broken teeth and torn gums that leers beneath a battered
disfigured nose. The disheveled hair conceals bleeding gaps of torn
scalp from whence cruel hands had torn away the lovely tresses.
Broken twisted hands clutched the wagon for support, fractured
fingers with nails torn away locked like groping claws to steady her
broken body. All semblance of humanity gone this was truly a demon, a
bride of Satan, a Witch. I revere this Halloween Crone and hold her sacred above all. I honor
her courage and listen to her warnings of the dark side of man. Each
year I shed tears of respect when the mundane exhibit their symbol of
Christian love. Petals & Thorns poetry by angel © 1993 - 1999

Fw: [TheOldWorldWitches] 'Twas The Night Before Samhain...

From: Hearten

'Twas The Night Before Samhain

T'was the night before Samhain and all through the house,

Not a creature was stirring except for my spouse.

The incense it burned in his cauldron so black,

For Witchcraft and magick he'd a wondrous knack.

The Circle was drawn with the athame of power.

The Guardians were called to each Quarter tower.

The Lord and the Lady attended our rite,

In wonder and glory and power and might!

The Dearly Departed came as our guests,

To live once again, after their rest.

We bid them goodbye with a tear in our eye;

Such a lovely presence of Loved Ones so nigh…

The candles danced in the flickering light,

With the Great Rite we bid them all a good night.

The Guardians thanked have all sped away.

The Lord and the Lady, thanks for the day.

The night before Samhain, Gods bless this house,

A Circle of Wonder 'round me and my spouse.

DailyOM: Honoring Life Changes

DailyOM - The Wisdom of Fear
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

October 15, 2011
Honoring Life Changes
The Wisdom of Fear
Anything really worth doing in our lives will always have some fear attached to it.

Anything worth doing will always have some fear attached to it. For example, having a baby, getting married, changing careersâ€"all of these life changes can bring up deep fears. It helps to remember that this type of fear is good. It is your way of questioning whether you really want the new life these changes will bring. It is also a potent reminder that releasing and grieving the past is a necessary part of moving into the new.

Fear has a way of throwing us off balance, making us feel uncertain and insecure, but it is not meant to discourage us. Its purpose is to notify us that we are at the edge of our comfort zone, poised in between the old life and a new one. Whenever we face our fear, we overcome an inner obstacle and move into new and life-enhancing territory, both inside and out. The more we learn to respect and even welcome fear, the more we will be able to hear its wisdom, wisdom that will let us know that the time has come to move forward, or not. While comfort with fear is a contradiction in terms, we can learn to honor our fear, recognizing its arrival, listening to its intelligence, and respecting it as a harbinger of transformation. Indeed, it informs us that the change we are contemplating is significant, enabling us to approach it with the proper reverence.

You might wish to converse with your fear, plumbing its depths for a greater understanding of the change you are making. You could do this by sitting quietly in meditation and listening or by journaling. Writing down whatever comes upâ€"your worries, your sadness, your excitement, your hopesâ€"is a great way to learn about yourself through the vehicle of fear and to remember that fear almost always comes alongside anything worth doing in your life.

Get Ready for Samhain!: Day 5: Samhain Legends and Lore

Get Ready for Samhain!

Day 5: Samhain Legends and Lore
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
As we've seen so far, Samhain is a time of year in which we can honor many different aspects of the human experience -- life, death, rebirth, the end of the harvest, ancestral pride, and so forth. Although we call it Samhain, the more secular version of this sabbat is of course Halloween! Naturally, there are a number of different legends and myths about this time of year. Now's a good time to brush up on some of your Samhain folklore, legends, and customs from around the world.
Deities of Death and Dying

For thousands of years, different cultures have honored deities of death. As the harvest winds down, death is rarely as apparent as it is during the Samhain season. From the ancient Egyptians to the Norse, the Maori to modern Hindus, nearly every civilization at some time has shown death a healthy respect. Deities of Death

Samhain Folklore

In addition to all the magic we can conjure up at Samhain, there are a number of legends and bits of folklore associated with this holiday. Learn about some of the superstitions surrounding Samhain and Halloween. Samhain Folklore

Black Cats - What's So Unlucky?

Ever wonder about the superstition of black cats being bad luck? And how did these feline lovelies become part of the Halloween and Samhain traditions? After all, this Sabbat wouldn't be the same without images of black cats on display! Black Cats

Jack O'Lanterns

It's Samhain, and pumpkins are everywhere! If you've ever gone out trick-or-treating, chances are good you've seen a carved jack-o-lantern grinning at you from someone's window. But where did this unusual custom originate? Jack O'Lanterns

Trick or Treat!

While many of us Wiccans and Pagans celebrate the holiday called Samhain, for some of us, it's also the secular event of Halloween. The tradition of trick-or-treating isn't quite as old as the holiday itself, but it's certainly been around for a while. Let's look at how this unique custom evolved. Trick or Treat!

Caring for Our Dead

In many countries in the modern world, the practice of burying the dead is common. However, it's a relatively new concept by some standards, and in some places, it's almost a novelty. In fact, many of today's contemporary funeral practices might be considered a bit strange by our ancestors. There is such a wide variety of funeral practice throughout history that it's worth taking a look at - in fact, archaeologists have learned that studying the treatment of the dead can actually give them a clue to how a culture lives. Caring for Our Dead

Mexico's Day of the Dead

Each year in Mexico, and in many Hispanic communities around the United States, people celebrate the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) between October 31 and November 2. While it may sound a bit macabre, it's actually a joyful celebration, honoring the memories of those who have died in the past year. Today's Day of the Dead festivals are a blend of old Aztec tradition merged with modern Catholic beliefs. Day of the Dead

Tomorrow: Get Crafty at Samhain

In tomorrow's lesson, we'll look at some fun craft ideas to bring the themes of Samhain into your home. Learn how to make a Samhain straw man, grave rubbings, your own front-yard headstones, and more!

Candy Candy Basics Sugar Candy Chocolate

From Elizabeth LaBau, your Guide to Candy
Candy corn isn't just for gorging yourself sick anymore! Yes, after you tire of eating it by the handful, you can use it as an ingredient in these Halloween candy recipes, or just as inspiration for some candy corn look-alike desserts. Make sure you have your sweet tooth handy when you eat these, because the combination of ultra-sweet candy corn + additional sugar yields a wicked sugar high.

Candy Corn Cake Pops Photo Tutorial

No actual candy corns were harmed in the making of these cake pops! A rich pumpkin spice cake is mixed with cream cheese frosting and formed into candy corn shapes, then skewered and dipped in candy coating to resemble the iconic candy. This photo tutorial will show you just how to make them. Also check out these other Halloween cake pops: Pumpkin Cake Pops and Ghost Cake Pops.

Candy Corn Popcorn Balls

Sweet and gooey, these Candy Corn Popcorn Balls are the perfect Halloween treat! They're super easy to make, and since they use marshmallows as a binder instead of a sugar syrup, they don't get too hard or stick in your teeth.

Homemade Candy Corn

You don't have to rely on store-bought candy corn this holiday--you can actually make your own! The taste and texture of these candies is different from standard candy corn--they are much softer than waxy store-bought candy corn, and have a sweet vanilla-marshmallow taste.

Halloween Candy Bark

Okay, this one doesn't necessarily include candy corn, but it can, and it's so tasty I had to throw it in here! A graham cracker base is slathered with a quick chocolate fudge, then topped with the Halloween candies of your choice. Try chopped candy bars, M&Ms, candied nuts, or anything else you have lying around.

Fw: Class Changes, Goddesses of the Week, and Weird NJ

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:30 pm (PDT)

October 18, 2011

Dear Cher,

Please note that we've had an important change in the Tarot and Feng Shui Classes.  Due to a family emergency, the Tarot class has been pushed back a week and will be held on October 20, 27, and November 3.  Due to scheduling conflicts, the Feng Shui Class has been postponed to the Spring.  If you had a conflict in your own schedule, this might mean you can now take the class!  Click on the link at the right to read more.

It's not too early to think about holiday gift-giving.  For the best selection, don't wait till the last moment.  We are all feeling the pinch of these tough economic times and I will not be ordering as often as I have in the
past.  If there's something you're interested in purchasing, do it sooner rather than later so you can be assured you get the item you wish.  I am still offering lay-away.  Come in and discuss the terms so you're not disappointed.

Florida Water in 2oz, 4oz, and 7.5oz bottles and Rose Water in 4oz bottles are on the shelves, $2.95, $3.95, and $5.95.

There are lots new Tarot sets and Oracles in, and most of them are on the website at www.souljourney.com/onlinestore-tarot.htm.  New ones arriving soon will get on the website as quickly as possible.

If you're not already connected, please click on the link below to "like" us on Facebook at /souljourneynj.  Of, if you click over to the website, there's a link there too.  Classes and reminders get posted there first, before this newsletter goes out most of the time, so if you want to be the first on your block to know what's going on here, add us to your "likes."  I've also created a Twitter account, although I've only just started using it, so please follow us at #souljourneynj.

We'd also love it if you'd take a moment and leave a complimentary review at one or more of the following sites:
www.patch.com
www.merchantcircle.com
www.yelp.com
Thank you for your time, it's much appreciated.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Mitakuye Oyasin,
Sandi

Learning Reiki is a serious commitment.
It is a healing art taught in stages or degrees, that are accompanied by attunements. Each attunement brings about new cleansings and helps us to deal with our Karma. Reiki will help you to love yourself & know yourself on a deeper level.

Reiki differs from other laying on of hands healing because of its use of physical positions to apply the energy over and through the Chakra system. Also, it is different due to the fact that the healer is required to be opened and attuned by the degree process. The opening or attunement process works from the top or Crown chakra downward. The Reiki energy flows in this manner throughout each healing as well.

Reiki is one of the most effective methods we currently have for transferring the energy. Reiki uses life force energy to heal the body, mind and spirit. Sometimes negative energy is caught in the person's etheric body, or the person has a block. In instances like this you can combine your Reiki with crystals and remove the block or negative energy and perform Psychic Surgery on the etheric body or Aura.

Pet Memorial Ritual

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:42 pm (PDT)

Pet Memorial Ritual

To hold a memorial for a special pet who has passed on, place a picture of your pet (preferably taken when it was in its prime) on your altar.
Lightdirectional candles, and
place them around the picture. Light a black candle, and place it next
to or on top of the picture. Meditate on your pet’s life and the joy it
brought you. Look at the picture and speak words of peace for your pet’s soul:

Like the wind, soar free through the heavens.
Like a flame, warm the hearts of those who think of you.
Like water, let your spirit flow ever onward,
Like the earth, be steadfast awaiting rebirth.
As the wheel turns, may you find as much joy in your next life as you gave in this life.

Homer, The Odyssey

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:43 pm (PDT)

In the great hall, her great loom stood.
And upon it, a vast fabric, woven upon a fine warp.
Every day, she wove upon the great loom.
And every night, by torchlight, she unwove it.
~Homer, The Odyssey

The figure of Penelope, the loyal wife of Odysseus, was made familiar to us by the great poet
Homer. While her husband was thought to be lost - in reality, he was
simply wandering back from the Trojan war - Penelope was fending off
suitors, claiming that she had to finish a large weaving before she
could remarry. Each night she would tear out what she had woven that
day, so that her progress was slow indeed.

Behind this queen
stands a larger, more cosmic figure. The Great Goddess of Earth
continually makes and unmakes her great creation, life. Each spring she
weaves a new tapestry of color and fragrance and sound. Each fall, she
unweaves that tapestry, only to start afresh the next year. In the
ceaseless making and unmaking that is our planet's pattern, we can
either see a hopeless progression into death or a hopeful movement
toward eventual rebirth. Both patterns are there; we can choose which
one to focus on.

The Spider

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:44 pm (PDT)

The Spider

I paused last night on my porch to look at a garden spider weaving her web.
I watched as she gently yet expertly wove the suspension lines and the lines which would entrap any insects unwary enough to wander into the gossamer threads.

She spent a great deal of time making sure everything was perfect before centering herself in the middle of her work.
By morning, as the sun began to creep over the horizon, this spider moves to the fringes of her web,
so carefully constructed the night before and snips the supporting lines to let it fall to the ground.

She repeats this every day until the end of her life.
The spider does not try to hold on to each day's work.
Instead, she lets it fall away so that she may build anew each and every day.

We should heed her
lesson in our lives. Our past failures should not be dwelled on so that
we can make room for the new opportunities of
success. Each new day brings with it renewed hope that where we failed yesterday, we will succeed today.

On this day, an annual fair called Bettara-Ichi ("Sticky-Sticky Fair")  is held in Tokyo, Japan near the sacred shrine of the God Ebisu. Children carry sticky pickled radishes tied to straw ropes through the streets in order to chase away evil spirits and to receive blessings from the seven Shinto gods of good luck.

Goddess of The Day:  Yama-no-Shinbo Bettar-tchi (Japan)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:49 pm (PDT)

Goddess of The Day:  Yama-no-Shinbo
Bettar-tchi (Japan)

Themes:  Luck; Wealth; Prosperity; Protection; Joy
Symbols:  Good-Luck Charms

About Yama-no-Shinbo:  This Japanese Goddess of prosperity and good fortune joins in today's festivities by blessing all efforts to improve our luck.  Her name means "mother of the
mountain", which, in feng shui (the art of placement in accordance with a region's energy patterns for the most beneficial result), represents a
protective, ancient power that brings happiness and wealth to those
within its shadow.

To Do Today:  This annual festival takes place near the shrine of Ebisu to encourage good
luck.  Sticky items are among the favored tokens carried today, to
encourage good fortune to literally stick to the participants.  For our
purposes this might translate into using double-sided tape inside a
piece of clothing so that the outside can gather Yama-no-Shinbo's
fortunate energy.  Alternatively, put a symbol of an area of your life
that needs better luck (such as a dollar bill for money) on the
refrigerator with a magnet, while whispering a brief prayer to the
goddess.  This action symbolizes prosperity sticking with you (and
attracting right energy).

Take out any tokens or
objects around your home that you value for their lucky energy.  Clean
them off, and ask Yama-no-Shinbo to energize them anew for protection.
Put your hands over the tops of these, visualize a personally
lucky-colored light filling them, and say,

"Goddess of fortune, fill this charm;
keep me ever safe from harm."
