I have been asked to do an impromptu ritual for health/healing or the opposite
of banishing of the illness. But I am having a brain fart right now. The person
who is ill can not be with us, but the family member is bringing a picture of
them and info on their specific problem. We usually do a healing candle, but I
was also looking for other ideas as well. Any help is appreciated.

>Thanks,
>Annette

Here are a few you could use:

ABSENT HEALING SPELL

This helps send healing energy to those who live away from you and you can't see
them in person.
You could also use it to heal yourself. You need:
--A picture of the patient, A blue or green candle, Sandalwood oil, Clear quartz
gemstone/crystal.
Project a white light shield around yourself to protect against the illness your
dealing with.
Hold the candle and project healing/love energy into it.
Do the same with the crystal. Anoint the candle with sandalwood oil starting
from the bottom
and working up to the top (away from you).
Visualize the person illness leaving them or that they are surrounded by green
healing energy.
Place the picture under the candle and light it. Place the crystal on top of the
picture also.
Leave to burn for at least 20 minutes.
Light the candle once a day until the illness had subsided.
Bury the candle off your property and thoroughly cleanse the crystal.
ALL PURPOSE HEALING SPELL

This spell is meant to help speed up recovery from an illness or injury.
Supplies: 1 piece of amber or amethyst, a green candle, a piece of paper, and a
pencil.
Write the problem (describe the illness or injury) on the piece of paper.
Open the circle and invite the God, the Goddess, and the elements.
Light the candle. Lay down on the floor in the center of your circle and place
the
gemstone at the site of illness (e.g. on your throat if it is sore).
Close you eyes and imagine the illness or injury being sucked into the gemstone.
Take your time,
this may take awhile. When you are finished, burn the piece of paper in the
candle's flame.
Thank the God, the Goddess, and the elements. Close the circle. Finally, take
the gemstone
and the ashes from the paper outside and bury them in the ground.
SPELL TO ALLEVIATE ILLNESS

Take a coin you have found on the ground and put a pinch of salt on it.
Then transfer the salt into a small amount of boiling water, and let it
dissolve.
When the water has cooled, use the coin to flick the saline solution onto the
palms of your patient's hands and on the soles of his or her feet.
Yet another traditional remedy uses candle magic.
On a blue candle, use a pin to inscribe -- moving from the base to the tip --
the name
of the person who is ill. Pierce the candle with the pin and leave it there.
Let the candle burn down and extinguish itself, and keep the pin for future
spells.
SPELL TO BANISH PAIN

Write on a small piece of paper:
Flee! Pain can not find me I am free!
Calm is drawn to me I am free!
Wrap this with a dark blue ribbon and carry with you or wear it.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

I guess my first question would be whether or not the person for whom the
ritual is intended really wants health or healing or whether that is the
best course of action for him or her. What we want and the lessons we have
to learn in this lifetime, sadly, are not always in agreement with one
another.

I am speaking as on in ill health who has wished for both healing and health
and gotten neither, really. Assuming, as you have worded it, that the
illness is not to be banished, I would focus on rites which help the person
deal with his or her disabilities and illness and will help him or her to
use them to good advantage and take in the lessons they have to teach.
Illness and infirmity DO teach lessons; whether or not we are open to them
depends upon the person. That is not to say that all care for comfort
should be abandoned either. The idea, again assuming that the illness is
not to be banished, is to focus on living as comfortably and healthfully as
the condition will allow.

Your mileage may vary, but I simply light a pink candle for myself or anyone
in similar straits and use the Christian addage "Help me to accept the
things I cannot change and to learn what I can from them"

You could also incorporate stones which are affiliated with the body part
which is malfunctioning or stones with which the person may have an affinity
(often we are instinctively drawn to the herbs and stones we need without
knowing why).

There are other phrases and prayers of comfort which can be used similarly;
do not neglect them because of source, some of them are quite powerful for
the circumstances. Rites themed around comfort and self-acceptance and
lessons learned seem to readily adapt themselves to this sort of thing, and
it seems to me that the simpler the rite the better it works.

I can understand just wanting the thing gone but honestly...if you don't
know why it's there or why it's doing what it's doing, not much is going to
work. It's rather like blindly shooting into a crowd and hoping you will hit
an armed robber. If it's resisting leaving, one of two things suggests
itself: either you simply MUST know why it's there and what it is doing
before you can get rid of it or it is something you personally must deal
with face to face in order to banish it. Often these 'negative spirits' are
our own creations; I would look to your own behavior patterns, separating
the good from the ill and carefully examining the things you do, first. You
should also go through your things and your daughters'. Get rid of that
which is old and broken, of no use to anyone, no longer loved, or being held
onto though it has negative memories. Keep only that which you use and love
and care for. Get rid of all physical dirt: dust, vacuum, wash the
laundry, sort through closets (a pinch of lavender, which can be bought in
the grocery as a spice, in the wash water helps a lot). Scrub your tiles,
your bathrooms. Get the junk out of the yard, especially if it's
accumulated near the house or apartment itself. Set clean wards and be
specific in your wordings about what may come and what may go, what may
stay, and what has to leave. Spirits, self-created or not, tend to enjoy
chaos. Order your checkbook, work on your life issues. If that does not
distract the thing into leaving then, again, it is time to find out what it
wants or figure out what inner demons of your own created it.

In my experience, almost thirty years' worth now, such actual
manifestations are rare. Usually they result from the target's own
subconscious creations. I have found that to especially be the case when
the entity 'spreads' from one person to other family members.

Not everyone follows the Rede, which after all merely translates to 'advice'
and was initially intended for only one Tradition in Wicca, not the whole of
it. Even so, there are certain circumstances --- as most Traditioned Wicca
know --- where the Rede simply cannot apply. One is responsible for one's
actions and one's inactions as well. Our predecessors certainly did not
expect us to stand by and let harm come to others if we could prevent it,
even if it meant harming someone or something else. It's a matter of
choosing wisely the action which will benefit the most with the least
possible harm to all else, not a black and white solution.

For myself...if something attacks me or my family, all bets are off. I will
use every bit of power at my disposal to either send it back to where it
belongs or destroy it utterly. When something is powerful enough that it
resists the natural conclusion of its existence, it usually DOES need
destroyed. Some even ask for it directly.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - November 30

"Someone must speak for them. I do not see a delegation for the four footed. I see no seat for eagles. We forget and we consider ourselves superior, but we are after all a mere part of the Creation."

-- Oren Lyons, ONONDAGA

Whenever we make decisions, we need to look around to see who would be affected. If we change the course of a river, who, what will be affected? If we put poison on the gardens, who, what will be affected? If wee cut the trees and too many are cut, who, what will be affected? We need to become aware of the consequences of our actions. We need to pay attention to our thoughts. We are accountable to our children to leave the Earth in good shape.

Billboard Upsets NJ Drivers
Monday November 29, 2010

Every year, there is always a lot of discussion about the winter holidays and what they mean to different people. Opinions tend to range from the "Hey, let's all just celebrate and have peace and goodwill, pass the wassail!" to "How dare anyone else celebrate in December!" So this year, when the American Atheists group put up a billboard right outside the Lincoln Tunnel in New Jersey, lots of folks decided to pile up on the OMG THOSE DARN RUDE ATHEISTS bandwagon.

The billboard, which features an image of the three wise men approaching a manger in Bethlehem, sports the phrase, "You know it's a myth; this season, celebrate reason." As you can imagine, CNN iReporters jumped on the story, and revealed that they were "upset" by what they had seen.

Personally, I don't find this any more upsetting than those little car magnets that everyone has on their minivans where I live, which feature a Nativity cut-out and "Keep Christ in Christmas." I also don't give a hoot about all the "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" signs which adorn my little suburban community. I figure other people are welcome to believe as they wish, and their beliefs don't have to mesh with mine. Doesn't bother me a bit. And yet, judging by the level of vitriol in the CNN comments section, not everyone feels that way. Moreover, it appears that everyone's allowed to believe in something, but those who express a disbelief are not permitted to share their thoughts about whatever philosophy they may hold.

The American Atheists website says the billboard is there to "address those atheists who "go along to get along", and to encourage them to come out of their closets," as well as to dispell the myth that Christians have a monopoly on the December holiday season, and to raise awareness of the modern atheist movement.

I personally enjoy ALL holiday billboards and everyone and anyone puts them
up this time of year. I'm far more offended by the sects which stand on
major street corners, disrupting traffic and endangering the small children
they always seem to have with them, often causing auto accidents, who scream
at you as you go by.

Most amusing was my Catholic friend's response: "Yes, we know it's a myth
and we know he couldn't have been born in December but to us he WAS born so
why not celebrate what that birth means to us? It's not like it's an excuse
to be a universal butthole." (She was referring to ALL people who argue
about whose holiday is what, not just atheists or Christians).

She works in the shrine gift shop in St. Augustine, where I am a frequent
visitor and customer.

Navigating Rough Terrain

Navigating Rough Terrain

Whether it is illness or other circumstances we don't want, can be a great challenge. This is where the rubber meets the road in living the full faith of our lifepurpose and seeing perfection in all things. Here are some tools useful for navigating rough terrain.

1. Accept what is. A good friend of mine shared a simple tool for moving fully into acceptance. It is to simply ask, "How do I know this should be happening? Because it IS happening."

2. Focus on the end result. Appearances are very seductive, particularly when our current experience engenders stormy emotions. If our point of focus remains rooted in what we don't want, we simply create more of what we don't want. Don't get caught in the trap of expanding your current experience by giving more attention to it.

3. Maintain proper self care. Eat, sleep and relax. If there is great inner turmoil, the first step is to seek the stillness within. Within that stillness lies the solution to the inner turmoil. The outer experience is merely a reflection of what's inside.

4. Call in the reserves. This is the time to use the healthy support system you have in place. Out source work or activities to others that you determine must be done but don't have the energy to do yourself.

5. Rest fully in the knowledge that all things pass. Change is the one constant in the universe. All things come and go. For that is the circle of Life.

I look at this site often and love all the suggestions, spells and input you all have to offer. I am in need of some help for a dear friend of mine, please. My friend has been experiencing some problems in her marriage for some time now. She feels as though her husband does not respect or love her anymore. Her husband not only seems to have a temper but has some daily 'demons' he is dealing with like drinking and being verbally abusive towards my friend. It is hard for me to stand back and watch this, but I do out of respect for my friend. She has asked me to not talk to her husband or mention anything she has told me. So, my question is, would you do a cleansing, protection or rekindle the love spell? She does not think that he husband would be open minded to my "practices" and would prefer that it be done in private without him knowing. Makes things a little harder. Suggestions? Thank you!!!

Create Sacred Space in Your Home

Create Sacred Space in Your Home

Today, our modern cities are testaments to a world addicted to unbridled growth at any cost. Electromagnetic stresses, pollution, and negative vibrational energy currents plague us in a manner unprecedented in human history. Under these conditions, is it still possible to create sacred space?
The ancient practice of yoga, of integration of mind-body-spirit can harmonize us. The same principles can be applied to our environments as to our selves. As in ancient times, the utilization of yoga techniques to become attuned to nature can help us regain this lost inherent wisdom of how to live in harmony.
Learn how the yogic practices of meditation, sacred movement, sound, and ceremony can also create balance, flow, prosperity and peace in our homes:
The following yogic practices, when used with intention, will do much to restore balance and harmony to any home, making it a peaceful sanctuary where Heaven and Earth unite:
Clear the Mind: One of the first steps in any yogic regimen is to clear and still the mind. This begins to align us with the Source of our Being. Similarly when we clear our homes of the external clutter, we allow the vibrations of a natural order to permeate our surroundings.
Breath: Perhaps one of the most powerful tools in yoga is the use of the breath to bring our consciousness back in tune with the Divine Cosmic Breath. This Cosmic Breath is the rhythm of Life itself. The cycles of the seasons represent the inhale and exhale of Life itself. In the winter, when the force of Life is receding, it is not a good time to start new activities, but to dissolve old attachments and connections, to go within and recede as well. In the spring, when Life is bursting forth with abundance, it is a time for new projects and activities as we are aligned with the flow of Life at that time. By synchronizing our home activities with the timings and cycles of Nature, we align ourselves with that Cosmic Breath, or pulsation of Life.
Balance: Achieving balance of mind, body and spirit is a core aim of any yogic practice. In our homes, this is achieved by paying attention to the five elements: earth (body), water (emotions), air (mind), fire (spirit), ether (prana or sound). Become mindful that your home has a balanced representation of each of the elements. A home that is predominantly governed by one of these elements over the others will bring its inhabitants out of balance due to the undue influence of that element.
Movement: In yoga, certain movements of the body can stimulate the production of certain hormones, and restore the flow of Chi in the body. Likewise, homes that incorporate aspects of sacred movement will rejuvenate the environment. For instance, in properties containing labyrinths, there is a curious absence of negative earth energy currents on those properties. Similarly, rituals such as sacred dance, like the twirling of the Sufi dances, when done with awareness and intention, can transform negative vibrational energies on a property.
Sound: Nada Yoga means "union through sound." It is the ancient spiritual art and science of inner transformation through sound and tone. Russill Paul, author of The Yoga of Sound, states, "Through Nada Yoga, we can fine-tune our bodies and our minds to resonate with the harmony in all of creation, from atoms and cells to flowers and planets."
The Vedas state that mantras chanted continually have the power to purify and rejuvenated the environment. When we offer sound as vibrational medicine for our homes, the result is a harmonizing of our environment with that of music of the spheres.
Form: The asanas of yoga were first devised to mirror the forms in nature. In so doing, our bodies and minds were put into tune with that natural order. The same is true of architecture that patterns the harmonics found in Nature. Nature does not have straight angles, it flows in curves and spirals, and so when we see examples of spirals, like a winding staircase, or the flow of water in a waterfall, we feel an instant harmony in environments that pattern Nature. Certain mathematical harmonics attuned to Nature achieve similar results. The mathematical harmonizing with nature was a main key to the building of the Cathedrals and temples throughout Europe, China, Egypt and India.
Ceremony: In yoga, the yajnas, or fire sacrifices, are a ceremonial bridge between the inner and outer worlds, between human and the divine. Fire transforms all things into their most subtle essence. Whether applying the spiritual fire of spiritual practice (tapas) or the actual fire of a candle flame, fire transmutes and refines both our inner and outer environments. The ritual of placing a problem at the fire of a candle each night relieves the mind of the problem and one awakes feeling refreshed and relieved of the burden offered to the sacrificial fire. Yagnas like Agnihotra, dedicated to the god of fire, are known to purify the environment on physical as well as subtle levels. They have been shown to lower pathogenic viruses, pollution and even crime in areas where performed. Imagine the effect of yagnas performed in our homes. Sacred blessings of the land, releasing of the energies and traumas of the past, giving thanks to the ancestors, releasing all prior spirits on the property, all are ceremonies which purify and cleanse the vibrations of our homes when done with mindfulness.
While times have changed, basic principles have not. Ancient yogic techniques of nada yoga harnessing the subtle vibrations of sound, asanas designed to mirror Nature's perfection, yagnas to purify and redeem the past, and meditation tuning us into the divine current of life around us-these techniques work not only to refine our own inner subtle vibrations, but also the vibrations of the space where we live, and our planet as well. Some of the most common changes that people have experienced when harmonizing their space with their environment include more energy, better sleep, enhanced learning among students, improved relationships, increased financial flow, increased plant growth, and better health among animals in the area.
Now is a crucial time to make our homes our temples--places where the sacred vibrations radiate out to heal our families and communities. While our modern times have created more complex problems, they have also created different solutions to the same age-old quest: creating sacred space on earth. By harmonizing the vibrations of our space, and creating sacredness among the mundane, we can transform our homes into sanctuaries of harmony.

Here's Mine:

You are The High Priestess
Science, Wisdom, Knowledge, Education.
The High Priestess is the card of knowledge, instinctual, supernatural, secret knowledge. She holds scrolls of arcane information that she might, or might not reveal to you. The moon crown on her head as well as the crescent by her foot indicates her willingness to illuminate what you otherwise might not see, reveal the secrets you need to know. The High Priestess is also associated with the moon however and can also indicate change or fluxuation, particularily when it comes to your moods.

You are The Moon
Hope, expectation, Bright promises.
The Moon is a card of magic and mystery - when prominent you know that nothing is as it seems, particularly when it concerns relationships. All logic is thrown out the window.
The Moon is all about visions and illusions, madness, genius and poetry. This is a card that has to do with sleep, and so with both dreams and nightmares. It is a scary card in that it warns that there might be hidden enemies, tricks and falsehoods. But it should also be remembered that this is a card of great creativity, of powerful magic, primal feelings and intuition. You may be going through a time of emotional and mental trial; if you have any past mental problems, you must be vigilant in taking your medication but avoid drugs or alcohol, as abuse of either will cause them irreparable damage. This time however, can also result in great creativity, psychic powers, visions and insight. You can and should trust your intuition.
What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

The Role of Deity in the Craft

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:38 pm (PST)

The Role of Deity in the Craft

Like many aspects of the Craft, there is no standard mode of belief regarding the role of Deity (ies). While Paganism encompasses the full range of belief structures available to humankind, individuals following the Craft will generally fall within two groups: those who believe in a personal deity and those who don't. If this sounds awfully "normal," remember that individuals of the Craft are still a segment of the larger whole of humankind. What is reflected in one will generally be reflected in the other, as well.

Of those whose belief structures do not encompass a personal deity, tribute may or may not be made to an impersonal creator god/dess. For these individuals, the Craft is less about religion and more about a philosophical way of life. For these, the essence of the Craft is rooted in a strong belief in the ability to effect change in one's life through one's own will, without intervention from a higher power.

The flip side of that coin are those in the Craft who do believe in a personal deity. However, even here belief is not homogenous. Pantheism, Polytheism, Humanism, Animism, and Monism, among others, are expressed in the beliefs and actions of these individuals. For them, the Craft is both a philosophical way of living and a spiritual belief system that loosely fits the term "religion."

As a general rule, those following this Path believe in a God and Goddess who represent the masculine and feminine aspects of the universe. Some see these Two as the One made manifest in such a way so as to not exceed our level of comprehension. For others, the God and Goddess are whole and completely separate deities. In both, the Goddess is usually seen as being eternal and constant in Her nature; She is both Destruction and Creation; She who rips away the old to make way for the new. The God is seen as sacrificial in nature; giving up his life force so that Nature can be renewed. Again, these are generalities and not meant to be all-encompassing statements.

An individual following this Path will often call upon deity names which are best known through his own cultural or ancestral context. Thus, someone of Irish descent will feel more closely aligned with the deities of ancient Ireland; someone of English descent with the ancient gods of that land. However, a belief in reincarnation may lead one to the gods of a completely different culture than one's current lineage; as well, one may not feel particularly aligned with any named deities. These latter individuals do not use named addresses, other than referring to them as the God and Goddess or, at the most, as Lord and Lady.

For those of us in the Craft who believe in the Higher Power, we acknowledge the Lord and Lady's touch in everything we see, feel, hear, and taste. We call upon their guidance in our times of need, and rejoice with them in our times of plenty. They permeate every aspect of our lives, for we do not see ourselves as separate from them, but rather we are of them and they are of us. The relationship is all-encompassing as we seek to live in a state of constant awareness of the beauty, depth, and mystery of the Lord and Lady, as reflected in ourselves and the world around us.

How to Write a Spell

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:44 pm (PST)

How To Write A Spell

Words have power. All words, whether written or spoken, are alive with the energy we give them. This magical concept was well understood by ancient magicians.

The first primitive alphabets probably originated about 3100 BC in southern Mesopotamia and were developed by the Sumerians. Early alphabets were a combination of words and symbols. These were used primarily to record business and monetary transactions; however, some writings that survived on clay tablets indicate some of these inscriptions were spells and prayers. These were among the earliest written charms. Most experts agree the ancient Egyptians produced one of the most extensive collections of written spells in human history.

In time, possessing any written charms or magical wisdom was dangerous and could lead to charges of black magic, and so the practice of writing down of magical lore declined. Magical knowledge was passed on orally. Only very old Books of Shadows or magical grimoires survived.

Today, a spell or affirmation that you write yourself is powerful, because it allows you to focus on your wish and create a resonant energy. The first step in writing a spell is the same as with a spoken spell: You must have a goal. Once one is clear in your mind you'll be ready to put it on paper. Notice, I did say on paper. A spell that is handwritten is much more powerful than one which is typed. When you write your affirmations by hand your powers of concentration are stronger and energy will flow from your heart and into your power hand. This energy then streams from your pen and finally takes visual form on the paper. As your spell begins to take physical form on paper, it also starts to manifest itself in the unseen realm of spirit. And at this moment true magic begins.

When you write a spell you are in effect writing a letter to the divine spirit. Keeping this in mind, the materials you use should be of good quality. I suggest the paper have a high cotton content and be pure white. Use a pen you are comfortable with and that contains blue or black ink. The pen and paper you use should be treated as magical tools--do not use them for anything else, and let no one else touch them.

Some magical traditions use red ink, because red is the color of the life force. The choice is yours. If you are artistic, a design relating to your goal is a nice addition. I like to include a simple drawing at the top of the page, depicting the Moon phase I am working with.

Begin your spell-writing when you are sure you won't be disturbed. Your affirmation need not be lengthy. A paragraph or a few well-chosen sentences will do. Here is one example of a written spell (for protection during travel).

I, (your name here), will that my trip be safe and secure in
all ways. I will travel to (your destination) safely and return
home safely. I am protected from all danger. All forms of
transportation will be safe and secure. I thank the divine
power (or your personal deity)for his/her aid. I write this
spell for the good of all and according to the free will of all.
So mote it be.

Once you are finished writing, fold the paper as a letter. Place it in a special drawer or box. You may sprinkle herbs in the drawer that would be appropriate for your desired goal. Tell no one about your spell. A written spell may be kept forever. It may be carried with you, or destroyed in a respectful manner at the designated time, after the spell has worked.

If you work with runes, or some other magical alphabet that you thoroughly understand, you may use it to tap into extra magical power. Writing in a secret alphabet will serve to trigger your psychic powers. But never write a charm in a language you don't know well.

How To Combine the Written Word with the Elements

The masters of written spellcrafting, such as the ancient Egyptians and the whirling dervishes, took the art of spell writing one step further. If needed, the written charm would be combined with one or more of the elements--earth, air, fire, or water. This would complete the spell: For example, if a spell was written to combat an illness the paper with the written spell would be soaked in water, the ink would wash off, and the ill individual would then drink the inky water.

Here is another example. Let's say you wished to rid yourself of a bad habit. You could write your spell during a waning Moon, then soak the paper in salt water and end the ritual by burying the paper and pouring the salt water onto the ground. In this way, you've combined the written charm with the elements of water and earth, where the negativity will be absorbed and purified. An alternative method would be to burn the spell and disperse the ashes to the wind. Here you'd be combining the written work with fire and air to achieve your goal.

Other Factors To Consider

The practice of writing spells may be used by different religious systems. For instance, Pagans may direct a written spell to a specific god or goddess. Christians may petition a saint to aid them.

As is the case in much magical work, timing is crucial. You should try to time your spell-writing with Moon phases and other astrological or seasonal influences. Days of the week can also enhance the power of the written word. Here is a list of the days of the week with planetary and magical associations.

Sunday (the Sun): Health and vitality, general well-being.

Monday (the Moon): Home, family matters, children, women's issues, and magic in general.

Tuesday (Mars): Strength and protection.

Wednesday (Mercury): Communication and travel. A good day to write a spell when you can't decide which other day would be best.

Thursday (Jupiter): Money, wealth, expanding a career or business.

Friday (Venus): Love and friendship; also, home decorating or remodeling.

Saturday (Saturn): Dealing with fears or serious thinking; helping the needy.

If you have your spell planned well in advance, the time of day you write can also add benefits. Magically speaking, the day, like the year, is divided into four parts--morning, noon, sunset, and midnight--each with magical attributes.

Morning: Spells written at this time could include anything dealing with new beginnings--a new job, purchasing a new home, or a new romance.

Noon: This is the solar hour, which deals with health and energy, and spells intended to increase anything; also it is good for expanding a business or adding passion to romance.

Sunset: Twilight spells could deal with spirituality, emotions, or contacting the spiritual realm. Write a spell now to end something, such as a bad habit.

Midnight: The traditional "Witching hour" is a good time to write spells concerned with secrets or occult wisdom. If you aren't sure when to write a spell, midnight is always good.

Spell writing is nearly a lost magical art. If you combine your own ideas with some of those above, you can use the written word to perform powerful magic. Let your imagination go, and customize your spells to suit your individual needs.

Polytheism--Different Views

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Polytheism - Different Views

Polytheism is more complex than simply believing in many Deities.

For all of our differences in beliefs and practices, one of the few characteristics that nearly all Pagans share is a polytheistic outlook when it comes to Deity. Generally speaking, we believe in the existence of many Gods and Goddesses. Of course, even this is not universal among all Pagans. But if you were to ask a number of Pagans from different paths, what it means to be polytheistic, you might not always get the same answers. It's not as simple as you may think.

Hard Polytheism
This is the easiest to define and to understand. Hard polytheism is the belief in many Deities, and that all of those Deities are unique individuals. They are not just different ways of looking on one God, but truly separate and distinct beings.

Soft Polytheism
Soft polytheism has a few possible variations to it. Personally, I see two kinds of soft polytheism that are closely related. The first is viewing the various Deities as personas or aspects of a single supreme Deity. In a sense, this could be seen as a form of monotheism. The other is viewing Deities as personas of two supreme Deities, namely a God and a Goddess. This second view maintains the standard male/female balance that most Pagans embrace with their spirituality, but the first belief of a single Deity that is both/neither male or female is not that uncommon. These two outlooks are also sometimes called pluralistic monotheism, or pluralistic duotheism. From my own experiences with different people, I have noticed that Pagans who work very closely with certain Deities or exclusively in certain pantheons tend to be hard polytheists. On the other hand, Pagans who work in a more general way without developing any personal relationships with particular Gods or Goddesses tend to be soft polytheists.

Those who grew up with a typical monotheistic religious structure, may have trouble getting their heads around polytheism. Some people who are new to Paganism feel that they are not really believing 'properly' in the Gods, when in fact they are really just following a soft polytheistic path.

Is one outlook right and the other wrong? Well, perhaps the Gods themselves know the answer, but I would say that either attitude towards Divinity is just fine. Your path is your own, no matter how many Gods (and Goddesses) you worship.
