Please note that I am not particularly a follower of the actions of the royals, but this event poses an important astrological consideration for anyone getting married.

It has been announced that William and Kate are scheduled to marry April 29, 2011. According to my Celestial Guide 2011, the Moon is void until 1:33 pm Eastern Daylight Time. The UK will be on summer time which makes them 5 hours later than our EDT. So it would be 6:33 pm there. Unless the couple have an evening wedding, which I doubt will happen, this would put the wedding clearly in this void period.

The void of course period starts Wednesday, April 27, at 3:52 pm EDT or 8:52 pm UK time.

William and Kate seem like good people and I would not recommend they or anyone get married at that time.

Blessed Be.

How Should Pagans Celebrate Thanksgiving?

Question: How Should Pagans Celebrate Thanksgiving?

A reader writes in with an interesting dilemma. He says, "My family wants to have a big Thanksgiving celebration, but I don't want to participate. I object to this holiday as a protest of the treatment of Native Americans by my white ancestors. Any ideas on how I can survive Turkey Day and still hold true to my Pagan ideals?"

Answer:
You know, there are a lot of people who feel this way about Thanksgiving Day. To many, rather than the Brady-Bunchified version of happy pilgrims sitting around with their Native friends eating corn cobs, it represents oppression, greed, and cultural annihilation. For people of Native American ancestry, it's often considered a day of mourning.
You have a couple of options. The first, obviously, is not to attend the family dinner at all, but stay home instead, perhaps holding a silent ritual of your own in honor of those who suffered under the guise of settlement.
However -- and this is a big however -- for many families, the holidays are the only times they get a chance to be together. It's entirely possible that you're going to hurt some feelings if you choose not to go, particularly if you've always gone in the past. No one wants Granny to cry because you decided this was the year you weren't coming to dinner with her -- after all, it's not her fault that you find Thanksgiving objectionable.
That means that you'll need to find some sort of compromise. Is there a way you can spend the day with your family, but still remain faithful to your own sense of ethics? Could you, perhaps, attend the gathering, but maybe instead of eating a plate full of turkey and mashed potatoes, sit with an empty plate in silent protest?
Another option would be to focus not on the Pilgrims/Indians aspect of the holiday but instead on the abundance and blessings of the earth. Although typically Pagans see the Mabon season as a time of thanksgiving, there's certainly no reason you can't be thankful for having a table full of food and a family who loves you -- even if they don't understand what the heck you're talking about. Many Native American cultures had celebrations that honored the end of the harvest, so maybe you could find a way to incorporate that into your celebration, and educate your family a little at the same time.
Finally, if your family says any kind of blessing prior to eating, ask if you can offer the blessing this year. Say something from your heart, expressing your gratitude for what you have, and speaking out in honor of those who were oppressed and destroyed in the name of manifest destiny. If you put some thought into it, you can find a way to hold true to your own beliefs while educating your family at the same time.
For anyone who's interested in reading an excellent book on what really happened at Thanksgiving, I recommend picking up a copy of 1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving by Catherine O'Neill Grace. It's a well-researched and beautifully photographed account of the Wampanoag side of the events leading up to the first Thanksgiving at Plimoth.

Naming Ceremony

Naming Ceremony

A naming ceremony of some type is common to most societies. It is a
ceremony where a new born is introduced to his/her community as well as to
the spirit world. It is an important ceremony for the family and friends that
are involved even if it does not mean much to the infant at this point
in time. It makes the newborn a real and concrete member of the community. This is one reason why christenings are such a large social event among many
Christians. Even if you plan to let your child pick his/her own faith when they grow up, you should still consider this ceremony. It is very important socially,
not to mention that it brings the infant to the attention of the powers that
be, whatever he/she will call them later, during one of the most
vulnerable times of their life.

Naming ceremonies are normally done no sooner than one week after
birth (to allow for recovery of both baby and mother from the birth) and
normally no longer than a couple of months after the birth (if more time passes the infant is already a part of the community and has probably already been
called to the attention of the spirit world in some way so it becomes a rather
moot point). The ceremony is best done at sunrise or at least in the
morning and is best if done during a full or waxing moon.

New parents should invite family and friends that they feel will be
close during the child's life. A naming ceremony can be simple and non-
denominational enough that those of other faiths should feel comfortable attending (unless of course they want the baby to get baptized, but that's another story). Ask each guest to bring a gift for the child, something simple that symbolizes an attribute or virtue they hope the child will grow to
have (like an image of a dove to symbolize peace).

Make sure they understand this is NOT like a baby shower. These gifts will be kept in a box until the child comes of age (either at the start of puberty or when they leave home whichever the parents prefer). Have them attach their name and a word or two that describes the gift to the gift with a bit of ribbon or yarn.

For example, "Aunt Sally hopes you will have peace in your life." The mother and father, or godparents or grandparents if the parents are overwhelmed with the new baby, should find and decorate a box to use for the ceremony and to store the gifts in till they are given to the child when they come of age. For this ceremony the mother and father can act as the
officiator/priest/priestess, or if they prefer someone else can
officiate.

For the ceremony the child should be dressed in white and well fed and changed before hand. You might want to refrain from calling the child by its given name until they are names in the actual ceremony.

You can if you want open a circle like you would for any ritual if
the guests will be conducive. If not just do a very simple circle
mentally right before the start of the ceremony.

Officiator: "Will the Mother of the infant please bring the child
forward!" Mother walks up to the Officiator (with husband if applicable) and
then turns to face the guests.

Officiator (standing behind Mother): "Family, friends and all the
positive powers of the universe (or any particular deities you prefer), I ask
you to look upon this infant."

At this point if the child is going along with the entire process it
would be good to lift him/her up towards the heavens. (It also lets the
people in back see more of the ceremony.)

Officiator: "He/She is the newest member of our family. He/She will
grow strong and healthy surrounded by our love and nurturing."
You can let the baby down now. (grin)

Officiator: For him/her to be a part of our lives we must have a
name by which to call him/her."

Mother turns to Officiator
Officiator: "What is this child to be named?"
Father (or Mother is you prefer): "This child is to be named
___________"

Officiator says the child's name loud enough for all to hear. Then
says "Greetings, __________, and welcome to our hearts and homes."

If the Officiator is a friend or family member (other than mom or dad) now is when they should present their gift to the child saying,

"I bring you "Peace" and hope you will find it in your life," and placing the gift in the box.
(That last part does not have to be loud enough for the audience to hear.)

Mother turns back around to face the group. Then the Officiator will address the audience,
"Does anyone (or anyone else if the Officiator has given the child a gift) have a gift to bless ______________ with?"

Someone will have been told ahead of time what to do (godparents or
grandparents are a good call) and will start a line coming up one by
one to ooh and ahh over the baby and give it their gifts using the same general terminology the Officiator did. Prewarning people and explaining the ceremony ahead of time, even if it is just before the ceremony, will help this part a lot!

When everyone has given their gifts the Officiator will call forward
the godparents, if any.
"Would _______ and ________ please step forward?"

Once they are in the front facing the Officiator and Mother, Father
and newly named child the Officiator will continue,
"______(Father) and _______(Mother) love you dearly and value your morals and believe
that you each have much you can teach _________(child). They would ask that you serve as the teachers and guardians of _______(child) in the event that they are no longer able to. Will you accept this responsibility and honor?"
(Please make sure they will say yes ahead of time!!!!)
They should respond in unison, "We would be honored to."
Then hugs from the Mother and Father would be in order.

Finally the Officiator should close the ceremony with,
"Thank you all for coming here today and meeting the newest member of our family and community. Go well and Stay well."
Then close the circle or if you did it mentally, just let it go.

Blessed Be,
Lady Nightshayde

Magical Ethics

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Magical Ethics

Living a magical life is a powerful and positive way to live.
However, it does come with a great deal of responsibility. If you are already
following a magical path, you know what I mean. But, if you are just beginning to think about bringing magic into your life, you must understand that there is a moral code of spiritual ethics to follow if you wish your magical journey to be positive.

Whatever area of magic you are interested in, you will find that
your magical work will not only affect you, but also those around you.
Some of you may be interested in the Wiccan tradition or perhaps in various forms of divination. No matter where your magical interests and abilities may
lead you, learning the ancient Wiccan Code will serve you well as you travel
the path of positivemagic. It consists of only eight words: "If it harms none, do what you will." This creed should be at the core of any magical work you do, even if you aren't Wiccan.

Over the years I've developed a more extended set of magical ethical
principles. I hope they aid you in your practice:

*Never speak a charm or spell in a language you don't understand.

*Never perform any form of revenge magic; karma will even things out.

*Never let anyone coerce you into joining a magical group you don't
feel comfortable about.

*Never let anyone force you to do any type of divination when you're
tired or just don't feel like it.

*Never perform a spell to help someone when they haven't asked you.
This is a form of manipulation.

*Don't brag about your magic--besides being rude, blabbing about
your magic weakens it.

*Never use magic to harm a person, animal, or plant.

*During a love spell never mention a specific person.

*Do give thanks when a spell has brought your desire into your life.

*When people ask you to perform any type of divination, don't let
them become too dependent on you.

In general, negative magic has no place in the life of a true
magical practitioner. To further understand this, may I suggest you read
Raymond Buckland's "Complete Book of Witchcraft." Also, any book by the
late Scott Cunningham will give you solid advice on practicing positive magic.

What you do in magic will come back to you. Positive magic will
bring you unexpected blessings, while negative magic will eventually harm the
practitioner. Of course, there are times when negative magic can be
used in a positive manner, such as trying to destroy a bad habit. Not all negative magic is evil; what's important in most cases is intent. People sometimes ask if they can use revenge magic when someone is trying to hurt them. The answer is still "no." It is better in this case to use a spell for
protection, or even ablessing. Concentrate on positive magic to heal any hurts, and get on with your life.

The one area of magic which gets people into lots of trouble is love
magic. If you're trying to attract love, you may perform a ritual to bring
the type of person you desire to you. However, never name a specific person, as this violates a person's free will and may have negative results.

As you journey along the magical road, you will come into contact
with people who don't agree with your spiritual path. That is their
right. Let them go in peace and never try to force your ideas on them. It is also your right to follow your own way.

Following a code of positive magical ethics will keep you
spiritually healthy and will serve you well in all areas of your life. Your
positive magic will come back to you threefold.

Ghosts: How Energy Factors Into Their Existence

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Ghosts: How Energy Factors Into Their Existence

As a child, my father always told us ghost stories. The stories
were of experiences that he and our family had in homes that they
visited or lived in. I was always fascinated by the thought that
ghosts might be real. It wasn't until I grew up and actually
began having experiences myself that I decided that this was
something I needed to know much more about. It seems the more I
tried to get answers, the more I got questions.

Over the years I have come up with some answers after using the
theories developed by scientists many years ago. Discovering
these answers has made me more aware of what ghosts are and where
they may have come from. Although I don't have the "real" or
"true" answers, this is not because the information is incorrect,
it is because there are no experts in the paranormal field. This
includes me. I am not an expert, however, I have done as much
research, if not more, than some of the paranormal investigators
working today. After working on the research, performing the
investigations and reaching a conclusion, I can bring you some
honest answers to what we believe ghosts are and where they come
from.

Probably since the beginning of time, ghosts have been the
subjects of many conversations. Sometimes these conversations
were done in a hush-hush manner because of the stigma associated
with talking about this subject. Many had to talk behind closed
doors and make sure that it was only with people they trusted.
Nevertheless, talk of ghosts continued and has evolved into a
trendy, get-a-thrill hobby.

So, exactly what is a ghost? Where does a ghost come from? Why
are they here? Let me see if I can make some sense out of
something we don't understand. What is a ghost? It is thought
that ghosts are people. They were once people who lived and
breathed much like you and me and then for various reasons, they
died. It could be a father, mother, brother, sister....well, you
get the point. It could be anyone. Using the mechanics of physics
we understand that people prior to being born, start as energy.
When we are born, we are given a "shell" or a body to live in
although the energy is still within us. Some people or religions
consider this a soul. When the body has finally become worn out
due to years of use or, if something has happened that we die
earlier than our years, the body dies and the remaining energy
removes itself from the body.

Medical personnel have told stories for years of being at the
bedside of a dying patient and at the moment that the person
passes, seeing a "wisp" of something or an energy of some type
floating upward. There have always been stories similar to that
from people who work in similar fields ranging from firefighters,
paramedics, etc. They have related amazing stories from dying
people of seeing the "light," seeing relatives long since
deceased, going through the "tunnel," etc. It is not possible
from a physical point of view that dying patients are able to
acquire the strength to physically open their eyes brightly,
smile, move their mouths and talk or act as if talking, lean up
out of bed when over the course of their illnesses they have lost
the ability to do these things. If they have neared the end of
their lives, it is said that relatives come back to retrieve
their loved ones and "take them home." From a paranormal
standpoint and having witnessed this miracle myself, I must
confess that it is true. These actions do occur. A person who is
nearing the end of their lives will, usually one day prior to
their death, suddenly become alert, sit up, perhaps talk or at
least knowingly acknowledge their loved ones still living and
have a chance to say their good-byes. It is on that next day that
usually they will die. Could it be a blessing from God? What is
it that gives these people the strength that they probably
haven't had in days, months, years to be able to perform these
tasks? Again, more questions....no answers.

So, why are ghosts here? What is it that compels ghosts to stay
here? Do they have to stay? In my research we have discovered
certain things that we can say with a good amount of certainty
and that is, there are ghosts. Can I say that for a definite
fact? I believe I can. Ghosts are here. They are everywhere. Most
have learned to live around the living without any problem. There
are ghosts that cannot leave the earth. They are stuck on this
earthly plane without the ability to come and go as they please.
We believe that most ghosts are able to do that. We believe they
are able to go from this earth to another dimension or place
whenever they choose.

So why do they stay? Besides the fact that some may not be able
to leave, we believe that they stay to try to communicate. Not
that they have special messages or anything but most are trying
to communicate with the living. There are those that are family
and wish to return to check on their families. There are those
that return to assist. There are those that return to be
mischievous. Some haven't left because they are unaware that they
have died.

In conclusion, the fact that ghosts exist is truly obvious to
those who will see. The signs they leave are obvious. It is
obvious to those who will see but they also attempt to make their
presences known to those who won't or can't. We will never really
know the messages they are trying to convey but we know they are
attempting to do this. If you are a person who is willing to
allow paranormal activity occur in your household, having an open
mind is a start to opening the lines of communication with them.
It takes more than just desire to allow ghosts to begin
communication. There are many other things that can be done. If
you are someone who is willing to allow these visitors into your
home or your life, taking great care to make sure the "phone"
lines are open, will truly help you both.

The Magic of Hands

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Nov 23, 2010 7:54 pm (PST)

The Magic of Hands

Hands were the first magical tools. Long before the earliest spell
books were written, humans saw their hands as tools of power. With
them they changed their world, and change is the essence of magic.
In the earliest days of our species, hands were used to gather
and to prepare food, to create shelter, for making simple garments,
and to fashion tools of wood, bone, stone, and shell. Hands clasped
together during the beginnings of life, assisted during birth, struck
against flesh in combat, and laid the deceased to rest. Finally,
humans discovered they could use their hands to create fire. These
quite real changes were probably viewed as the products of what
we would term magic, for many of them were the sole province of
humans. We can only speculate concerning the earliest spiritual and magical
beliefs and practices, for there certainly are no written records.
Speculation is based on a study of symbolism and a comparison with
early historic civilizations, as well as with pretechnological peoples of more
recent times.

Hands had other uses as well. Though some now speculate that
early humans first communicated by telepathy, it seems possible
that hand signals were also used. Apart from their value in everyday
life (warning of danger, giving directions during hunts, passing
on rudimentary knowledge), the language of gestures probably
evolved specific signs reserved for religious and magical purposes.
Certain shapes created with the fingers may have promoted union
with spirit. Some were most probably magical in nature.
Thousands of years later, some of these early forms of communication
were specifically associated with religion. Some of these ritual
gestures have been preserved and are still used in religions found throughout
the world. The miraculous changes that could be created with hands drove humans to regard them as one of the most spiritual parts of the body. In the first great civilizations (Sumer, Egypt, Greece, and Rome), hands enjoyed both a secular and a sacred aura of power, and played important roles in religion. Sumerian images of worshippers were often carved with their hands held upward in supplication or clasped in humility. Wall paintings in Egyptian
tombs depict deities holding ankhs, symbols of life in their hands. In reliefs of Ra (an Egyptian sun deity), the rays stemming from the solar orb terminate in small hands.

Pagan deities from around the world are often depicted holding
or clutching symbols of their powers (which are dispensed through
their hands). Some Hindu deities are equipped with multiple arms
and hands to symbolize the many powers and influences that these
deities possess. Even while hands were being used in religious
capacities, they never lost their magical qualities. Hand-to-hand combat
fostered the idea that hands were protective. Eventually, hands created symbols in their own images. Figures of hands were painted or carved and worn for protective purposes in ancient Egypt and Greece. All scuba divers are aware of the importance of gestures as a means of communication. Rome, Asia, and possibly South America. The powers of hands were transferred from flesh to bronze, stone, wood, clay, silver, and gold. For example, protective door knockers from ancient Pompeii were fashioned in the form of a hand grasping a ball. (Representations of hands are still worn today throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Latin America, as they have been since ancient Greek times.) As systems of magic evolved, hands became increasingly important: specific figures were drawn or traced, the hands were placed in certain postures, and ritual tools were carried and moved. Though many inner processes were at work during magical rituals, hands were viewed as the channels through which magical energy was released. Even today, hands haven't lost their power. Laying on of hands is a
popular form of healing, in which the hands are used to transport energy
into the sick. The age-old art of palmistry hasn't died out. Gestures of love
(holding hands) and hate (in the United States, the upraised middle finger)
still evoke powerful emotions. To symbolize the depth of our sincerity while
swearing oaths, we raise a hand. Clasping hands upon meeting a friend is a
social ritual in the West today, and is a survivor of the ancient ritual
demonstration of exhibiting weapon-free hands (and thus, offriendly intentions).

We still wear betrothal, healing, and luck rings on our fingers,
perhaps with the unconscious hope that placing such special objects
on our fingers will strengthen their effectiveness. Some of us shake
hands with famous persons, hoping that luck will rub off. Business
transactions are often sealed with a ritual handshake. Semisecret
groups continue to utilize ritual handclaspings as a means of
recognition, and, throughout the world, most of us earn our living by
using our hands. Religious use of the hands is also with us.
Catholics trace the sign of the cross on their bodies during prayer, priests and ministers often lift a hand during prayer and supplication (as religious
persons have been doing since ancient Sumer), and Asians clap
before images of their deities during religious ritual. The wide
range of unusual rituals and customs that we still perform with our hands
hints at the magical potential contained within them. Our hands are far more than utilitarian objects: our palms and fingers are potent magical tools.
Even several millennia of cultural and technological progress hasn't been able to fully exorcise this knowledge, as demonstrated by the above four
paragraphs. Knowingly or unknowingly, we still affirm that hands are magical objects.

Magicians (those conversant with natural but little understood
transformative techniques) know that the human body produces
energy that can be used in magic. The hands are seen as conduits
through which this energy is sent from the body during magical
rites. And so, hands are truly magical tools. With their help we can
change our lives. Any creative act performed with the hands (writing
a letter, weaving a rug, building a house, or knitting a sweater)
can be an act of magic, if its done with the proper intent.
So, what, exactly, is magic? We discuss this subject at length in
chapter 3, but a few words are appropriate here. Magic is the
movement of natural (yet subtle) energies to create positive
change. Its an ancient art, rich with centuries of history and
practice. It isn't supernatural, evil, or dangerous. Many have found magic to
be a technique that allows them to gain control over their lives; to
transform them into happier, more positive experiences.

Spell craft is a special category of magic. It consists of the
magicalcreation of, and ritual use of, magical objects. When we make
such objects, were performing acts of magic, for were causing
transformations (the raw materials and energies within them) with
our hands. Magic can be a purely mental process, using no tools
other than a trained mind. More often, though, it involves the use of specific
objects as focal points for concentration, such as candles, brooms,
and herbs. These objects are usually handled in ritual ways while
energy from within the body is sent into or through them.
This book describes many of these tools. Such objects, specifically
made for a specific magical act, can be quite effective. The tools
described in this book are rarely available in stores, but you
can make them with your hands.

All hand-made objects contain a bit of energy. The process that
creates these objects is more than a simple repetition of techniques.
During the creation process the craftsperson, through concentration
and the physical activity involved, moves energy from within
the body, through the hands, and into the material being worked.
This is what sets it apart from other objects, and what readies it
foruse in magic.

In magic, we have the opportunity to imbue our crafts with specific
energies: a loving relationship, increased money, protection
against harm, enhanced spirituality, a sense of peace, physical and
emotional purification, and psychic awareness. Today, many are
seeking the spiritual dimension of our physical world. Though some of
us enjoy the increasingly complex manifestations of applied
technology, were also searching for subtle explanations of the ways in
which we interact with nature. Were also eager to take control of
our lives, to fill them with positive energy, to wash them clean of doubt,
guilt, depression, poverty, and pain. Magic is a tool that can be used to
do this, and the magic starts in our own hands.
The aim of magic isn't the domination of nature; its the domination
of ourselves. We can clasp magic as a tool of positive self-
transformation. Spell craft is one aspect of this tool. Sewing beads,
weaving wheat, and creating magical brooms affirms, through
simple techniques and rituals, the powers within our hands and
their ability to shape our lives into nurturing, evolving
experiences.Look at your hands as they really are. See them as wondrous
vehicles of power, of the energy that flows through everything you
do. Tap into that power! Carve a symbol, dip a candle, mix fragrant
herbs, sculpt clay, and make your life all that you want it to be.
Create objects of magic and use them to transform your life into
a positive experience. In doing so you'll celebrate nature, your
hands and, ultimately, yourself.
