Bloodstone is also known as Heliotrope. The name Heliotrope is derived
from the Greek words meaning "sun" and "turning" because of a notion
that when the stone is immersed in water it would turn the sun red.
Polished stones were escribed as reflecting the sun. The more common
name of Bloodstone was derived by the stone's appearance; usually a very
dark green with splotches or veins of red resembling droplets of blood.
Bloodstone, sometimes called Blood Jasper in the trade, is not quite a
jasper but rather a dark green Chalcedony which is a cryptochrystalline
variety of Quartz, and which contains inclusions of red to brown.
Although the color is not consistent, the red spots are caused by iron
oxide and the green color is from chlorite particles or Hornblende
needles. Bloodstone is primarily found and mined in India, Australia,
United States, Germany, Scotland, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, and
Russia.
Chalcedony is the variety name given to fine cryptocrystalline Quartz,
of which Bloodstone is one. In this variety, crystals are too small to
be seen with the unaided eye or even with an ordinary microscope.
Instead, the crystallinity is determined with the use of an electron
microscope. Chalcedony occurs in almost any color or combination of
colors. Varieties include Agate (colored bands), Moss Agate
(milky-white background with dendritic green or brown inclusions),
Carnelian (orange to reddish brown), Sard (light to dark brown),
Chrysoprase (apple green), Tiger's Eye (banded yellow-brown) , Flint or
Chert (white, dull gray, or black), Jasper (opaque red), and of course
Bloodstone or Heliotrope (green with red flecks).
Today, finely powdered Bloodstone is used as an aphrodisiac and medicine in India.

nodules of red iron oxide distributed throughout its mass.
*Class: Silicates.
*Subclass: Tectosilicates.
*Group: Quartz.
*Color: Opaque dark green with red to brownish spots or veins.
*Luster: Glassy to waxy.
*Crystal System: Hexagonal.
*Crystal Habit: Cryptocrystalline. Forms in massive formations.
*Cleavage: Absent.
*Fracture: Conchoidal.
*Hardness: 6.5 - 7
*Specific Gravity: 2.58 - 2.64
*Streak: White
*Other Characteristics: Highly sensitive to heat.
*Notable Occurrences: India, Australia, United States, Germany, Scotland.
*Best Field Indicators: Crystal habit, color and hardness.
*Uses: Mineral collection specimens, ornamental stone and sculpture.
Myth & Lore:
Believed to be a very magickal stone, in ancient times Bloodstone was
thought to have the ability to stop hemorrhages by merely touching the
stone. Ancient warriors often carried a Bloodstone amulet which was
intended to stop the bleeding when applied to a wound.
In the Middle Ages, special powers were attributed to Bloodstone because
it was believed to have been formed when some drops of Jesus' blood
fell and stained some Jasper at the foot of the cross. From that time
on, this stone was used in sculptures representing flagellation and
martyrdom, leading it to be dubbed "The Martyr's Stone." Believed to
have great healing powers, the stones were crushed into powder and mixed
with honey and egg whites; a conconction believed to cure tumors and to
stop bleeding. Alchemists used Bloodstone to cure blood poisoning as
well as draw out the poison from venomous snakebites.
Engraved Bloodstone was used by the Babylonians in divination, and both
they and the ancient Egyptians used it to magickally defeat enemies,
usually by employing the stone's abilities to increase personal strength
and yet make one "invisible" when they wanted attention focused
strategically elsewhere. The Leyden Papyrus declared that "The world
has no greater thing than bloodstone," it opens all doors for its owner,
breaks down the walls of prisons and averts many disasters. Also known
as a Mother Goddess stone, it is associated with images of Isis and
Horus and the Black Madonna.
Bloodstone is used in weather magick. It can also be a good charm for
athletes who require added strength. It can be used to dispel
bewilderment and clarify obscure thought, allowing you to recognize the
beneficial aspects of "turmoil prior to perfection."
Along with Aquamarine, Bloodstone is the traditional March birthstone.

My own thoughts and experiences:
Whenever in the company of Bloodstone, it is not unusual to feel a
strong vital force; something which reaches into the far recesses of our
ancestry, while at the same time piercing straight into your very own
core. Looking at the "bloodlines" or rich red spots on an otherwise
deep field of dark earthy green, you can almost feel the stone pulsate
with the life force inherent in us all.
Although another excellent healing and grounding stone, I have three
names for Bloodstone.. . "the Rock of Ages"... "the Now & Then"
stone... and "the Motivator".. . all of which I feel tap into this
stone's more emphatic qualities. In regard to the first, this stone can
help you reconnect with your ancestral line and the Ancients. For the
second, it can simultaneously connect your present thoughts or feelings
(your Now) to those who came before you (their Then),
integrating the two so that you come to know no space and time between
you and the Ancestors. Here you may reach into the treasure chest of
deep-seated knowledge and pull forth the necessary healing and/or proper
judgments in answer to your questions. As "the Motivator," Bloodstone
possesses the uncanny ability to swiftly reach the root of an issue by
bringing you abruptly to the core of whatever issue is in your Now; it
enhances your perception of the "fight or flight" survival syndrome; and
finally, it bestows whatever fire, courage or resolve is needed to move
you into beneficial action.
It is a beneficent Mother Dragon of stones. Listen closely and let her
take you on the journey through time. But be prepared to visit the
intense realms of both Fire and Earth.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your old self is the fuel you will use to
burn your old self to the ground. This bonfire will liberate your new self,
which has been trapped in a gnarly snarl deep inside your old self. It's only
at first that you'll feel freaked out by the flames. Very quickly a sense of
relief and release will predominate. Then, as the new you makes its way to
freedom, escaping its cramped quarters and flexing its vital force, you will
be blessed with a foreshadowing of your future. The intoxication that
follows will bring you clarity and peace of mind.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): "Do we love Heaven more than God?" asks
poet Paula Cisewski in her book *Ghost Fargo.* I think that's the kind of
cryptic question you Capricorns would benefit from mulling over in the

part of us that adores the truth. It's good at distinguishing between
what's real and what's false, and is passionately attracted to liberation.
Although it may go into long periods of dormancy in some of us, *buddhi*
never falls asleep completely. It's always ready to jump into action if we
call on it. According to my reading of the astrological omens, Aquarius,
the *buddhi* aspect of your psyche will be extra special big strong and
bright in the coming week. In my opinion, that's better than winning the
lottery.

your previous limits in the coming weeks, Pisces, I'd love to hear you
summon some bursts of articulate jubilation akin to Watanabe's.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): "You don't want to be the best of the best,"

CANCER (June 21-July 22): In the 1925 silent film *The Gold Rush,*
Charlie Chaplin plays a prospector during the Alaska Gold Rush. After a
series of adventures, he finds himself stuck in a remote cabin on
Thanksgiving Day with a ruffian named Big Jim. They're out of food, so
Charlie gets resourceful, boiling his right shoe in a big pot and serving it
up steaming hot. What the audience doesn't know is that the movie prop
is made of sweet licorice, not leather. So while it may seem that dinner is
a hardship, the actors actually had no trouble polishing off their meal. I
see a similar scenario in your near future, Cancerian: something like eating
a "shoe" that's made of candy.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Lots of toddlers in Indonesia smoke cigarettes,
not just the chain-smoking two-year-old in the famous Youtube video
(tinyurl.com/SmokerKid) . But don't you dare let your inner child get
started on a similar habit any time soon, Leo. Make sure that sweet young
thing is exposed to only the very best influences; feed him or her only the
healthiest food, air, water, sounds, sights, images, and stories. The
innocent, curious, wide-eyed part of you is entering a phase when rapid
growth is going to happen, one way or another. It's your job to guarantee
that the growth goes in the right direction.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): "We grow sometimes in one dimension, and
not in another; unevenly," wrote Anais Nin. "We are mature in one realm,
childish in another." In you, Virgo, the discrepancies have been especially
apparent lately. For example, your brainy insightfulness has been on a hot
streak, while your gut wisdom has not. But I suspect this situation to shift
in the coming weeks. My reading of the astrological omens suggests that
your emotional intelligence is set to thrive. It will be fine if you

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): In the old Looney Tunes cartoons, Wile E.
Coyote is constantly chasing after the Road Runner, a long-legged bird
that prefers running to flying. Presumably, Coyote would eat the Road
Runner if he ever caught him, but he never does; the bird's too fast and
smart. In one recurring motif, the Road Runner dashes into the entrance
of a cave that's cut into a wall of sheer rock. When Coyote tries to follow
him, he smashes into the rock, and it's revealed that the cave entrance is
just a very realistic painting. I suspect that you're going to have the Road
Runner's power in the coming week: an ability to find and use doors that
are inaccessible to other people.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): I recently discovered a blues-gospel artist
named Famous L. Renfro, who is also known as "The Flying Sweet Angel
of Joy." His soaring, gritty music had a medicinal effect. It seemed to say
to me, "You have the power to change your life in the exact way you
want to change your life." Your assignment, Scorpio, is to find a new
source of music or art or literature or film that has a similar effect on you:
a flying sweet angel of joy that inspires you to do what has been hard for
you to do. According to my reading of the astrological omens, such an
influence is within your reach right now.

Feeling Stuck
If you are feeling stuck in your life, it is possible you are clinging to an old reality or thoughts.
When we feel stuck in our lives it's important to take stock of what is going on and find out if there is something we are doing or not doing that is keeping us stuck. Sometimes the situation is out of our control, and we need to look within to find the patience required to wait with equanimity until things move forward again. Many times, though, we can find the source of our stagnation in our own hearts and minds. Sometimes we are clinging to old ideas about reality and we need to make adjustments that will bring us back in tune with life, so we can flow again. Sometimes we find that fear of change is what's keeping us stuck, and we can resolve to find ways of facing that fear.
If introspection does not provide the answers we need, it can sometimes be helpful to ask those around you if they notice anything obvious that you might not be able to see. Remember to ask someone whom you can trust to be kind and sensitive as well as honest. Try to let go of your resistance because whenever there is something we can't see ourselves, it's because we don't want to see it. Try to listen with an open mind, and remember that you are always the final judge of what you need. Anything offered to us from an outside source will need to be processed within before its wisdom can take hold.
In all this, be kind to yourself and remember that we all get stuck sometimes. Think of it as a part of your process, a necessary step on your journey, rather than as a problem that shouldn't be happening. This can help to keep your frustration at bay and give you the space you need to take a deep breath and really figure out what's going on.

November Circle Focus: Abundance &
Scarcity
Our
ancestors who relied solely on the abundance of their crops each year became
worrisome if there was not an abundance of food to last them through the winter
and early spring. This mindset has been passed on through the generations
through the DNA of our blood. In modern times, we still feel worried if
some parts of our lives we deem *essential* appear
scarce.
In this circle, we will explore the areas in
our lives where there has been much abundance yielded. We will have a
Ceremony of Gratitude for these blessings. We will also discover what
area(s) in our lives appear as if little or no abundance manifested. We
will work with our guides to heal the illusion of scarcity in our lives and in
the lives of our ancestors and future generations. This is one way to

This Full Moon Circle Starts at 7:30 pm Sharp!
A Hands of Change Full Moon Circle is a public meeting for those who are
looking to respectfully worship the Goddess and God in a comfortable
friendly setting. It is also the best way to meet us or to see what
were all about. Any one of our members would be happy to meet you and
answer any questions. You can tell us by the gold cords we wear.
Our Full Moon circles are open to all respectful seekers. They are
"teaching circles," where we explain the magic we are creating. We are
an eclectic group, drawing strength from several traditions and
disciplines. Much of our power comes from our acceptance of diversity
and our commitment to inclusion. Our open circles generally draw 25-50
people. We recommend that if this is the first time attending you do so
with an open mind and in comfortable clothing.

* We ask all who attend to leave a $5 donation - more if you can,
less if you can't. Rent is very expensive and rituals require a lot of
supplies that need to be purchased every time.
