Elder's Meditation of the Day

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"I believe that being a medicine man, more than anything else, is a state of mind, a way of looking at and understanding this earth, a sense of what it is all about."

-- Lame Deer, LAKOTA

The Medicine Wheel explains different ways of looking at the world. The four directions are the East, the South, the West, and the North. In the East is the view of the eagle. The eagle flies high and sees the earth from that point of view. The South is the direction of the mouse. Moving on the earth, the mouse will not see what the eagle sees. Both the eagle and the mouse see the truth. The West is the direction of the bear. The bear will see different from the mouse and the eagle. From the North comes the point of view of the bison. To be a Medicine Man you must journey through all points of view and develop the mind to see the interconnectedness of all four directions. This takes time, patience, and an open mind. Eventually, you understand there is only love.

Great Spirit, today, allow my mind to stay open.

Love Each Day,
Lady Nightshayde

Resolve to Be Resolute

Resolve to be Resolute

New Year's resolutions date back as far as 4000 years. In those old days the Babylonians used to resolve to return borrowed farm equipment. Funny. Reminds me of a guy who borrowed a shovel from me once.

In less ancient times Julius Caesar re-set the calendar for the year to begin on January 1. Janus was the two faced god who could look backward as well as forward. His job was to look back over the past year and then look forward to the new one. So that's where the name of the month of January came from. Janus. The Romans mostly resolved to quit treating each other so poorly and asked forgiveness from their enemies. That sounds like something that should be done daily; not yearly.

Today, when we set New Year's resolutions most of us pick one of four major categories. The most popular one is to lose weight, followed pretty closely by a resolution to quit smoking. Quitting drinking and fixing failed finances round out the top four.

Here are some interesting resolution statistics.

45% of women in any given year resolve to lose weight.

97% of those women say they think they will need some kind of help to make it happen.

30% of men and women slack off of their resolutions by mid-January.

The huge majority fail completely by the time the Super Bowl arrives, which this year is February, 6, 2011.

And sadly, only 10% ever achieve their goal.

Well, I've never smoked and I'm not a financial planner so I guess it stands to reason that my comments will revolve around food and dieting. I must admit I never set a New Year's resolution to lose weight. I always felt that custom was pretty silly. Maybe it was because I never saw anyone actually follow through on their resolutions. I didn't have lot of good examples to pick up on. I did set a whole slew of resolutions to lose weight. That's for sure. It's just none of them were at midnight on December 31st.

At Plan Z we don't tell people to plan to make resolutions. We tell them they don't need a resolution. They need a PLAN. A resolution is a sentence. A plan involves active participation in their future. If someone is angry enough about their weight that they are willing to make a plan, their likelihood of achieving that plan goes up a whopping 300%. That's been proven.

Now, there are some other activities that surround the beginning of a New Year. Not everyone sets resolutions. Each culture wants the NewYear to bring luck and fortune to all those around them. Here are some other curious ways people work toward ringing in the New Year around the world.

AUSTRIA - The suckling pig is the symbol for good luck for the New Year. It's served on a table decorated with tiny edible pigs. Dessert often consists of green peppermint ice cream in the shape of a four-leaf clover. I've heard how the bakery windows are filled with little pink pig cakes. I have never seen a tiny pink pig cake in the US. Have you?

ENGLAND - The British place their fortunes for the coming year in the hands of their first guest. They believe the first visitor of each year should be male and bearing gifts. Traditional gifts are coal for the fire, a loaf for the table and a drink for the master. For good luck, the guest should enter through the front door and leave through the back. Guests who are empty-handed or unwanted are not allowed to enter first. I'd hate to be a woman on New Year's Day who rings the doorbell and the English won't let her in because she's a woman. It can get cold standing out there! Hopefully they've gotten a bit more PC and updated this custom.

WALES - At the first toll of midnight, the back door is opened and then shut to release the old year and lock out all of its bad luck. Then at the twelfth stroke of the clock, the front door is opened and the New Year is welcomed with all of its luck.

HAITI - In Haiti, New Year's Day is a sign of the year to come. Haitians wear new clothing and exchange gifts in the hope that it will bode well for the New Year. Ha! Another excuse to buy new clothes! I have some girlfriends who'd love to hear about this one!

SICILY - An old Sicilian tradition says good luck will come to those who eat lasagna on New Year's Day, but woe if you dine on macaroni, for any other noodle will bring bad luck. I think I'll just skip the noodles altogether and go low-carb.

SPAIN - In Spain, when the clock strikes midnight, the Spanish eat 12 grapes, one with every toll, to bring good luck for the 12 months ahead. I have read stories of people choking to death trying to eat the grapes fast enough to keep up with tolling. Sounds like a risky idea. Almost as bad as those guys in Milwaukee who jump half naked into a frozen Lake Michigan.

PERU - The Peruvian New Year's custom is a spin on the Spanish tradition of eating 12 grapes at the turn of the year. But in Peru, a 13th grape must be eaten to assure good luck. Golly. One more chance to choke. What fun.

GREECE - A special New Year's bread is baked with a coin buried in the dough. The first slice is for the Christ child, the second for the father of the household and the third slice is for the house. If the third slice holds the coin, spring will come

early that year. I'd somehow figure out where that coin was placed, make sure it's in my household slice and order Spring bulbs.

JAPAN - The Japanese decorate their homes in tribute to lucky gods. One tradition, kadomatsu, consists of a pine branch symbolizing longevity, a bamboo stalk symbolizing prosperity, and a plum blossom showing nobility. Where can I find a fresh plum blossom in Chicago in January? Fat chance.

CHINA - For the Chinese New Year, every front door is adorned with a fresh coat of red paint, red being a symbol of good luck and happiness. Although the whole family prepares a feast for the NewYear, all knives are put away for 24 hours to keep anyone from cutting themselves, which is thought to cut the family's good luck for the next year. Sounds like a good time to send my knives to the sharpening shop and just leave them over night. They are due for a sharpening anyway.

UNITED STATES - The kiss shared at the stroke of midnight in the United States is derived from masked balls that have been common throughout history. As tradition has it, the masks symbolize evil spirits from the Old Year and the kiss is the purification into theNew Year. What happened to the masks? Is that why we switched over to getting blind drunk? Not many people who drink a lot on New Year's Eve look very good at midnight. And those kisses can get pretty sloppy.

NORWAY - Norwegians make rice pudding at New Year's and hide one whole almond within. Guaranteed wealth goes to the person whose serving holds the lucky almond. Unless of course you have a serious nut allergy. Scratch that one.

So however you celebrate the New Year, I hope 2011 is a good one. The last couple of years have been killer-difficult for too many. It's about time we resolve to be resolute and get our economy and personal houses back in shape. Getting our bodies in shape is a darn good idea too. I'm just sayin'….

Viruses

Coming to a hard drive near you, the worst computer viruses yet:

-- AT&T Virus: Every three minutes it tells you what great service you're getting.

-- MCI Virus: Every three minutes it reminds you that you're paying too much for AT&T virus.

-- Paul Revere Virus: Warns of impending hard disk attack--once if by LAN, twice if by C:\>.

-- Politically Correct Virus: Never calls itself a "virus." Instead, it's an "electronic microorganism."

-- Government Spokesman Virus: Nothing works but all your diagnostic software says everything is fine,

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old
man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is
something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and
Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right.
It's just that the translations have gone wrong.

Enchanted Gift Spell

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Enchanted Gift Spell

Anyone can give a gift by going to a store and buying something nice. Enchanting a gift makes the gesture much more meaningful. To do this, think of the person you intend to gift. Select something you know will be appreciated. As you wrap the gift, visualize all the things you'd like to see come true for that person. Tie a ribbon, or a length of yarn, around the gift. Use red for passion, green for healing, or yellow for prosperity. As you tie the ribbon, say: "Ties that bind us will remind us of the love we have to share. May your life be filled with kindness, and all your days be free of care." For a birthday gift, add a small birthstone to the ribbon in the center of your bow. ~Paniteowl

Aromatherapy Tip

Why not try a blend of Scotch Pine and Cinnamon Leaf oils.
Add a few drops to one quart of water and let it simmer on the stove
or use in an aromatherapy lamp, electric diffuser,
or even a light bulb ring.
