Hello Leonora
I just read your article. Some here in the Southern Hemisphere never
really celebrate Summer Solstice as it is always compromised by
"connecting" with Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice (aka "Christmas").
I notice that Southern Hemisphere Pagans generally do not have the same
feeling for "connecting" with Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice when
it happens. My suspicion is that most are really seduced by
consumer-faith concerns (thus celebrate Christmas - naming it Yule
though it is Summer) ... nothing to do with relationship with
Place/Habitat/Earth. I think that the deep significance of Summer
Solstice gets lost here (in the Southern Hemisphere) particularly - it
is never really given its due contemplation. Below are some thoughts I
posted to other lists recently:

In the Southern Hemisphere, the celebration of Summer Solstice at this
time in the Gregorian calendar (December) is particularly
counter-cultural: the culture slouches towards consumer-capitalist
yearnings of exponential growth and denial of decline – expressed in
the lather of consumerism at this time, whilst Summer Solstice ceremony
is about celebrating the peaking of light, of form, of being ... and
assent to the decline, the dissolving. Summer Solstice ceremony is about
the invoking of a wholeness - and it's resultant, co-incidental pouring
forth and dissolving. We who dwell in Western cultural circumstance
(with consumer, capitalist concerns) barely know what "the fullness of
peaking" might be about ... because the party is never allowed to be
over, "enough" is not in the vocabulary. Also there is little
possibility of any idea of wholeness or fullness of being ... this is
not encouraged unless to seduce one to buy expensive therapy. Whereas
Winter Solstice theme and celebrations is something the current Western
culture can generally get behind - and so it is in the Southern
Hemisphere even in the blazing heat, Summer Solstice theme is of no
interest - unless you forget the bit about turning into the dark ... and
even many Pagans do.

Sigh!

Hello, GlenYs,

You make some excellent points! Thank you. I can see what you're getting at, and agree with most of what you say regarding 'local' references.

My overall vision is global and aims at our human relationship to the planet, and then of the planet to the Sun, which is where the bulk of the Creationist myths come from - with the idea of bringing a sense of community to all peoples, relative to the whole planet, regardless of which hemisphere they live on.

It's my opinion that such a view needs to come from within - from the heart of the individual - no matter what's going on in the shopping malls.

With love,

Leonora
