A new poll shows a lot of folks are ok with religious symbols on public land, although some of them only think certain religions are acceptable. Also this week, a theme park that's receiving tax incentives can't discriminate in hiring, an ancient temple to the sun is found in Bulgaria, and a collection of old occult knowledge is split up to settle a debt. It's also the season of the solstice, so if you missed our special Solstice Edition of the newsletter, be sure to click the link under News of Note! Have a magical week and a blessed solstice, whichever one you may be celebrating today!

Poll: Americans OK With Religious Symbols on Public Land

A new telephone poll from Rasmussen Reports shows that a significant number of Americans are still in favor of religious symbols appearing on publicly-funded property. Nearly three quarters of the thousand adults polled said religious symbols like Nativity scenes, Menorahs and Muslim Crescents should be allowed on public land during the holiday season. Some 80% favor celebration of religious holidays in public schools, although it should be noted that a lot of those ... Read More

Ancient Sun Temple Found in Bulgaria

Just in time for the Solstice, we've got a great story out of Bulgaria, where an 8,000-year-old temple to the sun has been discovered. Found near the village of Ohoden, in northwest Bulgaria, the temple is similar in structure to Stonehenge, although it's around 3,000 years older. The Ohoden temple is horseshoe-shaped, and was excavated from beneath the ground. According to archaeologists, the site was used "to calculate the seasons and to determine the best times for sowing and harvest... [as well as] for ... Read more

Book Collection Split Up in Financial Dispute

Last month we talked about the J.R. Ritman Library, also known as the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica (BPH), and located in Amsterdam. The BPH found themselves in a bit of hot water when they went to auction off a rare medieval manuscript through Sotheby's. It turned out that founder Joost Ritman had used the manuscript -- and a pretty significant chunk of the museum's other holdings -- as collateral on loans from Friesland Bank totalling around 15m Euros.

Friesland Bank immediately took possession of the library, and negotiations commenced, but now it looks like the ... Read More

Theme Park Can't Hire Based on Religion

So last week we talked about the proposed Ark Park, which is being built in Kentucky and receiving substantial tax incentives. Gov. Steve Beshear said the state's contract with developers of the creationism theme park will prohibit the project from "receiving state tax incentives if there is discrimination in hiring based on religion or other attributes."

The development team includes both for-profit investors and the nonprofit group Answers in Genesis, which runs the nearby Creation Museum. Answers in Genesis requires its employees to sign a "statement of faith." A spokesman said the group has no intention of trying to discriminate, "especially in view of ...
