Thank you, Lady Nightshayde.

There's one spot of bright news in all this: The big nature reserve for
rare/endangered wildlife, Hai-Bar Carmel, seems to have saved most of its
animals.  Raptors were shipped to Tel Aviv on the first night of the fire, and
they've managed to protect most or maybe even all of the mammals.  The fire is
still raging, however, destroying more trees and habitats and homes.
Over 40,000 dunams now gone.  Russia sent the world's largest fire-fighting
plane that is now in the sky pouring 42,000 tonnes of water each load, and other
countries have provided aircraft and the US will be sending fire-retardant
chemicals.

BB,
Miki

Total Lunar Eclipse on December 21, 2010

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Dec 4, 2010 5:16 pm (PST)

Total Lunar Eclipse on December 21, 2010

Lady N's Note: This will occur on Yule!

A total lunar eclipse on December 21, 2010, will be the last eclipse of the year. This will be second of two lunar eclipses in 2010. The last time a total lunar eclipse occurred was on February 21, 2008.
Where Will the Eclipse be Visible?
The December 21 lunar eclipse will be visible to observers in North America and western South America. The winter constellations are well placed for viewing during totality so a number of bright stars can be used for magnitude comparisons. Observers along South America's east coast miss the eclipse’s late stages because they occur after moonset.
Most of Europe and Africa experience moonset while the eclipse is in progress. Only northern Scandinavians can catch the entire event from Europe. The moon rises in the eclipse for observers in eastern Asia. The eclipse will not be visible from southern and eastern Africa, the Middle East or southern Asia. The moon will be situated in the constellation Taurus, close to the border with Gemini, and near the most northerly point in the moon’s orbit at that time of the year.
When will the Eclipse Occur?
The eclipse’s total phase lasts for 72 minutes. The penumbral eclipse ("P1") begins at 05:29:17 Universal Time (UT) and the partial eclipse ("U1") starts at 06:32:37 UT. The total eclipse ("U2") begins at 07:40:47 UT and the point of the greatest eclipse occurs at 08:16:57 UT. The moon lies near the zenith for observers in southern California and Baja Mexico at the instant of the greatest eclipse. The umbral magnitude peaks at 1.2561 as the moon’s southern limb passes 2.8 arc minutes north of the shadow’s central axis. Therefore, the moon’s southern half will seem much darker than the northern half because it lies deeper in the umbra.
Since the moon samples a large range of umbral depths during totality, its appearance will change dramatically with time. The total eclipse ("U3") ends at 08:53:08 UT, followed by the end of the partial eclipse ("U4") at 10:01:20 UT. The penumbral eclipse ("P4") ends at 11:04:31 UT.

This Week's Moonscopes Forecast for the Week of December 5 to Decemb

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Dec 4, 2010 5:17 pm (PST)

This Week's Moonscopes Forecast
For the week of December 5 to December 11
(Missed last week's forecast? Here it is.)

Sunday(New Moon), Monday: the Moon is in Sagittarius
Mercury is technically in Capricorn now, although it's basically still relating to Sagittarius because it will return to this sign by the middle of December. Mercury goes retrograde on December 10, with the influence of this slower energy already on the table. Mars will exit Sagittarius on December 8 and that energy is rather low right now too. The Moon, Sun & those two planets are reminding us that it would be good to favor a light-hearted attitude and free-flowing presence (two Sagittarius phrases) that will carry through the entire month.

Monday evening, Tuesday, Wednesday: the Moon is in Capricorn
Items that can be checked off a to-do list are asking for attention. Capricorn likes to organize things and enjoy a sense of accomplishment. This Saturn-ruled sign gives us the impetus to tackle tasks and pat ourselves on the back. The Moon's home is Cancer, an inwardly focused sign that is opposite its current placement in Capricorn, an outwardly focused sign. It's time to handle things in the outside world.

Thursday, Friday, Saturday am(*v/c): the Moon is in Aquarius
Aquarius is an odd sign, and not only because it rules or is associated with the unusual and the unique. In ancient times, and in some astrological systems today, Aquarius (along with Capricorn) was ruled by the planet Saturn. In Western astrology today, this sign is ruled by the planet Uranus. So there is the Saturn influence of getting down to business and then there is the Uranus influence of detachment, rebellion, and freedom. Uranus enjoys change and Saturn enjoys things that remain fixed. "Expect the unexpected" is a saying that is quite appropriate because you just never know.

Saturday pm: the Moon is in Pisces
Be sure to set aside some escape time, some 'down' time, this weekend since it's undoubtedly been a busy week. Pisces enjoys a break from reality on a regular basis.

Check your astrology chart to find which house (section of your chart) has the current Moon sign on the cusp (the beginning edge) & apply Forecast information to that area of your life as well.
For example, the Moon is in Leo and one of the suggestions is to entertain - however Leo is located in the 12th house of your chart, which is an inward energy place...then have a small, quiet gathering. By contrast, if Leo is located in the 1st house of your chart, an outward energy place...have a party! Don't have an astrology chart? Click here .

It is interesting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the next 30 days.ting to note when the current Moon is in the same sign as your birth Moon and to see how the flavor of that day carries through the next 30 days.

Current Planet Positions:
Sun - Sagittarius, until Dec. 22
Mercury - Sagittarius, until Jan. 13
(**retrograde Dec. 10-30 and briefly in Capricorn early that month)
Venus - Scorpio, until Jan. 8
Mars - Sagittarius, until Dec. 8
Jupiter - Pisces, until Jan. 23
Saturn - Libra, until Oct. 6, 2012
Uranus - Pisces, until Mar. 12
Neptune - Aquarius, until Feb. 4, 2012
Pluto - Capricorn, until Nov. 20, 2024

Current Asteroid Positions:
Ceres - Capricorn, until Jan. 4
Pallas - Sagittarius, until Dec. 21
Juno - Virgo, until July 28
Vesta - Sagittarius, until Jan. 20
Chiron - Aquarius, until Feb. 18

Current Asteroid Transits:
Ceres - Responsibility illustrated with a nurturing attitude.
Pallas - Broaden skill and information bases.
Juno - State clearly what you want in a personal partnership.
Vesta - Beliefs become even more inclusive.
Chiron - Regeneration comes in unusual forms.

Note: Timeframes for Moon signs, void-of-course periods, and current planet & asteroid positions are noted for Eastern time zone (USA). Please adjust according to your own location. Times are not given if the void-of-course Moon occurs for a very short period or if it occurs during the night (based on same Eastern time zone).

* v/c = Void-of-Course - When the Moon is void-of-course, spend time working on projects already in progress, creative endeavors, or self-improvement. Void-of-course simply means that no planets are aspecting the Moon as it gets ready to change signs. It's best not to start new projects, sign important agreements, or go shopping when the Moon is void-of-course because the result will probably be unsatisfactory in some way.

** Mercury Retrograde - the speed of the planet slows down considerably. Communications, paperwork, electronics, and traffic can become very mixed-up or delayed during this time. A situation will be in the process of changing, so wait until Mercury is direct to finalize anything. In general, maintain a slower, more cautious pace in daily affairs. Always allow at least two days before (to slow down) and after (to resume regular activities) a Mercury retrograde period. Read More about Mercury Retrograde here

Elder's Meditation of the Day - December 4

"In the end I tell my children, there's no way I can tell you how to be an Acoma, how to be an Indian. You have to experience it."

-- Stanley Paytiamo, ACOMA PUEBLO

Each person must make their own journey. It is like every human is given a life canoe. The canoe has one seat and one paddle. In order to get anything out of life we must be in the canoe and we must paddle down the river of life. Now, I can share with you how my journey has been, but I cannot paddle your canoe. You must paddle your own. Good luck!

Creator, I'm so glad I have You to guide my path.

Elder's Meditation of the Day

"Listen to the howl of our spiritual brother, the wolf, for how it goes with him, so it goes for the natural world."

-- Oren R. Lyons, Spokesman, Traditional Circle of Elders

If we watch nature, we can tell a lot about what is going on in the world. The animals and the plants are great teachers. Some time ago, crops were sprayed with a poison to kill the insects. Other animals ate the insects. The small animals were eaten by the Eagles and the Wolves. We live in an interconnected system. What we do to one, we do to all. If our spiritual brothers are living in balance, chances are we humans are also living in balance.

Great Spirit, let me listen to my Earth teachers, the plants and the animals.

December Stones and Flowers

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Dec 4, 2010 6:22 pm (PST)

December Stones and Flowers

Birthstones-turquoise, blue zircon, blue topaz
Turquoise - Turquoise is a blue, green or a bluish green hydrous aluminum phosphate that is colored by copper. The name means "Turkish stone" so named as the trade route that brought it to Europe originally came through Turkey. Legends & Lore: Turquoise has been used for a long time, since before 4000 BC; Turquoise is believed to give the wearer clarity, calm and the ability to start something new. It also brings spoils to the warrior, animals to the hunter, and happiness and good fortune to all.

Blue Zircon - Blue zircon should be gently cleaned and abrasives should be avoided. Blue zircon is mined in Kampuchea, Sri Lanka and Burma. Legends & Lore: In Greek Mythology, a young boy named Hyacinth was killed where his blood spilled gorgeous Grecian blue hyacinths grew. Pliny compared the blue zircon to the hyacinth. During the Middle Ages, zircon was believed to promote sleep, riches, honor and wisdom. It also drove away plagues and evil spirits; In the 1880's blue zircon was widely used in Victorian jewelry; Heating yellow zircon creates blue zircon.

Blue Topaz - A recent addition to the December birthstones is the blue topaz. Most blue topaz is artificially created by irradiation of pale topaz. Legends & Lore: One famous blue topaz was found in 1904 in the Hill Country of Mason County, Texas, North America's largest known gem-quality Topaz discovery. This 1,296-gram, pale-blue gem may be seen in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC.; Blue topaz was designated the Texas state gem in 1969.

Flower - Narcissus ~ Also know as the daffodil and the jonquil the narcissus comes in many colors. Meanings include conceit and egotism. It is the symbol of winter and the Chinese symbol of good fortune. The color associated with December is white; its meaning is "stay as sweet as you are". The name is derived from the Greek narke, which means sleep and/or numbness. In Greek mythology Narkissos was a beautiful youth who rejected all of his suitors. One day he came upon a spring at Mount Helicon where he glanced down and saw his reflection. He fell in love with himself and stared at himself endlessly. He did not eat or drink or leave the spring he just admired his mirror image and at the spring he withered away and died. He was then transformed into a beautiful flower by the waters edge, the narcissus that bows its head to see its reflection.

Gods and Monsters of the Winter Solstice

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Sat Dec 4, 2010 11:24 pm (PST)

Gods and Monsters of the Winter Solstice

Because Santa Claus has presided over the Yule festival for the last two hundred years, many of us are unaware of the other mysterious beings that visit during the dark days of the solstice season. Benevolent goddesses, formidable gods, and malevolent monsters emerge from the shadows to bless or wreak havoc on us.

Holda

Holda, "the gracious one," reigns over the skies from her crystal palace. When it snows, Holda is shaking her feather bed. Every day she spins at her wheel--the closer to the solstice, the slower the wheel turns. By Yule, her wheel grinds to a halt.

At Yuletide Holda descends from her palace to visit mankind. A tall, golden-haired beauty, she fertilizes the fields as she drives through the countryside. When people are of service to her, she rewards them with gold. Out of respect towards her, no wheels should turn during this period.

From this custom comes the saying: "From Yule Day to New Year's Day, neither wheel nor windlass must go round." In the old days, this meant women got a break from spinning; but they still had to keep a neat house, because sloppy workmanship angered the benevolent goddess.

Berchta

Holda's dark twin is Berchta, a gray-haired snaggle-toothed hag. Berchta, although not evil, is most definitely on the cranky side. She demands that the wisdom and skills of her and her sister goddesses be practiced with diligence and appreciation by mankind. Her feast day is January 5. It is a very good idea to eat her feast foods of fish and oat-cakes on this day, so as not to anger her.

La Befana and Baboushka

Berchta is not the only Yuletide hag. La Befana, the Italian crone goddess, rides around the world on her broom leaving candies and gifts to well-behaved children. One way to entice her into your household is to place a rag doll in her likeness by your front door or window.

Baboushka is the Russian counterpart of La Befana.

The Callieach, Louhi, and Skadi

Though no Yule or Christmas customs are associated with these crone goddesses, the Callieach, Louhi, and Skadi deserve mention--and perhaps a ritual in their honor--at this time. The Callieach known as the old hag of winter, may be the crone aspect of Brigid. She begins her reign on Samhain. With a giant hammer she strikes the earth. Cracks of frost appear where she's struck until the earth is covered with ice. Louhi, the Finish "witch goddess," kidnapped the Sun and Moon and held them captive inside a mountain. She was eventually forced to return the celestial bodies and to allow light to be restored. From Scandinavia, we have Skadi, a giantess who married into the Norse pantheon. She invented skis and snowshoes. Pray to Skadi when you find yourself in a dangerous winter landscape.

The Forest God

The mysterious Forest God, with his cloven feet and stag horns, has been known variously for the past four-thousand years as Cernunnos, Enkidu, Pan, and the Green Man. Ancient man believed he maintained the balance and order of the seasons. People observed his decline from autumn to winter. He would die, then come back to life in the same way as plants.

A ritual of death and renewal is enacted at Yule to dramatize this belief. During the Middle Ages, mummers went from house to house at Yule to pantomime a rough version of this ritual. A burlesque group of figures evolved from the mummer plays. The Forest God took on various shapes: Beelzebub, Johnny Jack, or the Fool, depending on the nature god's standing in the culture.

Although these figures were rough and hairy with horns and blackened faces, they were intended not only to frighten their audience but to make them laugh as well. His consort, known as the Bessy, was a woman probably because the hermaphrodite archetype is a powerful fertility symbol. The couple performed a mock-copulation, after which the Fool was mock-killed.

Wodan

In Norse mythology, Wodan acts as the god of the dead and of darkness. Leading the Wild Host, a hunting party of ghosts and hell-hounds, he rides the winter winds. Woe to anyone wandering outdoors at night when the Wild Host is abroad. If you are out on a stormy night and hear the barking of hounds and the gallop of a thousand hooves, you must throw yourself face down in a ditch. If you're lucky the Wild Host will take no notice of you; if you're not, you may be made to ride with the ghosts to the end of time.

Kallikantzaroi

In Greece, the Kallikantzaroi awake when the world turns to darkness. These malevolent figures are half-human, half-animal, sporting tusks, red eyes, and long red curling tongues. Black and hairy, they represent the dark time of the year. Entering through the cellar or down the chimney, they eat all your food, drink your liquor, and break everything they can find. Householders can protect themselves by locking their homes and keeping a stout fire burning in the hearth from Yule until Twelfth Night.

Tomtes

Swedish tomtes are a gentler race. Under four feet in height, with long white beards and little red caps, the tomtes tidy the house. All they ask for their labor is to be left a nice rice pudding on Yule. If the householder is too stingy to provide the tomte his treat, he simply departs and leaves the business of running a household to the owners.

How a Paradigm is Created
Powerpoint Presentation
This is an interesting and humourous look at how a Paradigm is created. A Paradigm is a set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community. PowerPoint is a ubiquitous presentation program. Presentation is the process of presenting the content of a topic to an audience. Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint is often used to illustrate the presentation content.
