MAAT

MAAT

Maat, you who are within me and around me

Who offers us divine justice;

Let me breathe in the essence of Maat

Which is eternal truth

Let me live by Maat, for Maat and in Maat.

Maat is the Egyptian goddess of justice, divine order, cosmic harmony
and balance. She is usually pictured standing or sitting on her heels,
wearing an ostrich feather and holding a sceptre and the ankh, or key of
life. She is called 'The Mother', the 'Lady of the Judgement Hall', the
'Virgin', and 'the Daughter of Ra'. Her law governs all the worlds and
even the gods have to obey her rule.

She was present before the dawn of creation when Atum the creator,
wishing that his heart might live, breathed in the essence of Maat, and
everything began. Maat is often pictured as giving the breath of life to
the pharaoh, as well as to the other gods and goddesses. Her husband
and male counterpart is Thoth, the divine scribe, lord of books and
learning, inventor of hieroglyphs and numbers, and the director of the
planets and seasons.

It was the pharaoh's duty to maintain the rule of Maat, and Egyptian
social organisation was meant to be a reflection of the divine and
natural order. If the pattern should be transgressed against, then chaos
and its consequences would follow. The pharaoh carried an effigy of the
seated Maat as a sign that he represented her regime, which had not
been disturbed since the day of its creation. Judges wore a lapis lazuli
emblem of Maat on their breasts. The Egyptians were urged to 'Speak
Maat, do Maat' and to live 'by Maat, in Maat and for Maat'. The goddess
is righteousness embodied, incapable of envy, maliciousness, deceit, or
evil.

At death, the human soul is conducted by Thoth, god of wisdom, into the
Hall of Double Justice and the presence of Osiris, Lord of the Dead,
together with the forty-two Assessors, or Judges of Maat, who pass final
judgement on the soul. The heart, which represents the person's
essence, is weighed in the Scales of Justice against the feather of
Maat. If he or she has led a good life, then the scales will balance
perfectly. If he or she has committed a crime against the forty two
divine rules, then the scales will tilt and the heart is eaten by Ta
Urt, a hideous monster from the underworld with crocodile head,
hippopotamus body and lion feet. The soul had to declare that, in life,
it was not a wrongdoer, a person of violence, evil minded, a rapist, a
murderer, a cheat, a thief of sacred properties, a liar, a stealer of
food, lazy, a transgressor, a killer of sacred animals, fraudulent, a
land-grabber, an eaves dropper, a gossip, nosy, an adulterer,
promiscuous, one who deliberately frightened others, a criminal, sharp
tongued, one who was deaf to the suffering of others, coarse in
behaviour, the cause of another's tears, prone to unnatural lusts, one
who indulged their anger, one who cursed, aggressive, inconstant, cruel
to animals, a doer of mischief, a traitor, a polluter of the
environment, loud, a blasphemer, partial, greedy, or an offender of the
gods.

The scales are a powerful symbol of Maat, since balance is the key to
her nature. She abjures all extremes: greed, overindulgence, excess,
laziness and slovenliness.

The god Atum said that when the heavens were sleeping he lived with his
daughter Maat, 'one within me, the other around me'. This is the mystery
of the 'double Maat' or union of opposites that creates harmony. Maat
represents balance in all its aspects- male and female, black and white,
night and day, Upper and Lower Egypt, fertile flood plane and barren
desert: the perfect balance of two opposites that make a single,
harmonious whole. The balance of Maat was the expression of the natural,
immutable law of the universe, which is held in equilibrium. The
feather of Maat is light, and the heart that is weighed against it must
belong to one who has trod lightly on the earth.

Maat's justice is concerned with more than punishing the wrongdoer and
vindicating the innocent. Though the scales of Maat are the familiar
Scales of Justice, an image we still use today, they are also
representative of her role as the keeper of divine balance and cosmic
harmony. A crime against the rule of Maat was an offence that disturbed
this unity, documented in the forty-two laws that included cruelty to
animals and polluting the environment.

All actions, whether good or evil, carry the seeds of their own justice.

'May we live in peace without weeping. May our joy outline the lives we touch without ceasing. And may our love fill the world, angel wings tenderly beating.'   The Universal Heart Center   http://www.freewebs.com/moshayra

Rose Quartz

Written and compiled by - Patricia Jean Martin

Rose Quartz is one macrocrystalline (visible to the naked eye) variety
of Quartz and is, in fact, one of its very highly desired varieties.
It's pink color is unique in the mineral kingdom. When occurring in
masses, this pink color is thought to be caused by impurities such as
titanium, iron or manganese, although more recent study has shown
through X-ray diffraction that the color may be due to thin microscopic
fibers such as that which comprises Dumortierite. When in its rarer
crystal form, its color is thought to be due to traces of phosphate or
aluminum. The origins of Rose Quartz's color are still in debate. If
Rutile needles are present during the growth of Rose Quartz, they orient
at right angles to the C-axis and a star pattern, or asterism, may be
visible when back-lit and peering through the crystal, as opposed to,
for instance, certain Sapphires whose asterisms are seen when light
shines on the surface of the gem.

Rose Quartz normally occurs as solid masses found in the cores of large
pegmatites (a coarse-grained Granite) and sometimes in massive
hydrothermal veins. Actual crystals of Rose Quartz are fairly rare; so
rare that the first to be found were dismissed as fakes. But true
crystals they are; the first was found near Rumford, Maine, but the
majority hail from Minas Gerais, Brazil. Other Rose Quartz crystal
localities include Arkansas, Colorado, South Dakota (official state
mineral as of 1966), Maine, Arizona, Virginia and New York in the U.S.,
Scotland, England, Canada, Mexico and Australia. Still, it is an oddity
that Rose Quartz is found somewhat lacking when it comes to crystal
formation, as all other forms of Quartz are commonly found in crystal
form.

Usually too cloudy to be cut into gemstones (although occasionally found
in gem quality), most Rose Quartz is cut into cabochons, beads, or
shaped into crystal points. Carved spheres, obelisks, pyramids and
figurines are also popular.

Over time, Rose Quartz crystals are prone to fading and are best kept
away from prolonged sunlight. They are also prone to crack or chip
rather easily and should be handled with care.

General Information:

May also occur (but rarely) as small horizontally striated hexagonal
prisms terminated by a combination of positive and negative
rhombohedrons forming six-sided pyramids.

Uses: Gemstone; ornamental stone.

Much of the geological information for Rose Quartz is the same as clear
Quartz. The above text lists simply the main differences. For a more
comprehensive view see: Quartz (Rock Crystal.

Myth & Lore:

Throughout history, Rose Quartz has been a symbol for love and beauty.
Today it is known as the "Stone of Gentle Love" or the "Stone of
Unconditional Love".

Although not much is known historically about Rose Quartz, beads were
found in the area once known as Mesopotamia (today's Iraq) that date
back to 7000 BC. Rose Quartz jewelry was known to be crafted by the
Assyrians during the time span of 800-600 BC, and it is believed that
the Assyrians along with the Romans were first to use this stone. The
Romans used it for making seals as a sign of ownership. They also
considered it a strong healing stone. Egyptians believed the pink stone
prevented aging.

Rose Quartz has traditionally been given to newborn babies to help in
their transition from the spirit world to the physical realm, gently
integrating the two and helping with adjustment. This stone is also said
to help mend broken hearts or aid in easing emotional trauma.

Wearing or carrying a heart-shaped Rose Quartz pendant or charm is thought to attract love.

Rose Quartz is an alternate for Garnet as January's birthstone.

well-being.

My own thoughts and experiences:

Rose Quartz is a veritable love stone. It is a soft and gentle stone,
and it is charming in more ways than one. Not only is it simply an
attractive and alluring stone, but it also possesses the power to
actually charm its bearer, and, in turn, may charm those he or she
chooses to relate to. It opens our hearts to acknowledge and more
easily identify all the beauty that surrounds us, not only within all
things and within all others, but within ourselves. It also encourages
forgiveness through its soothing, healing properties.

By inspiring a mood of love, I find Rose Quartz also encourages me to
share this mood...be it through my artwork as it flows through my hands
and off the tip of my pen or paintbrush, or through my relationships in
both love and friendship. A stone I relate to the passions of Psyche
and Eros, the lasting adoration of Selene and Endymion, the beauty of
Aphrodite, and the grace and unconditional love of Hestia.

Although very effective when placed on your person and worn as jewelry
(preferably a pendant close to the heart), another quick way of
benefiting from the sensual and loving virtues of Rose Quartz is to make
an elixir by infusing spring water with the stone's essence. To
promote a calm and harmonious atmosphere to your surroundings, scatter
several pieces of the stone in strategic places.

Rose Quartz not only promotes patience, friendship, and rejuvenation,
but most importantly all forms of lasting love. When I buried my
beloved black cat, Jazzman, I placed a Rose Quartz heart next to him,
symbolic of the unconditional love we shared and of the love we will
forever hold for each other.

"But, what if what I want and what you want are in conflict? If I
want rain, and you've just cut your alfalfa…how does that
work?" If you will focus upon the essence of what you want (which is
a magnificent new crop) and the other will focus upon the essence of what
they want (which is a successful alfalfa harvest, or
whatever)… and if either one of you doesn't get too involved in the
details of how you think you want your desire to play out, then both of you
can be satisfied. The Universe has the facility to orchestrate
circumstances and events to accommodate everyone.

Quiet
Your Mind and Observe

Today, notice what surrounds
you.  Listen to the sound of birds, the sound of voices, music in the
background.  Quiet your mind and observe.

Today, see how things
actually are, right now.  Watch other people and see if you can understand what
lies behind their actions.  Let life unfold as a mystery around you, a mystery
full of clues.

The power to create a new
life for yourself begins with a full understanding of where you are and who you
are right now.  Today, focus on where you fit into the world, what your world is
like, what other people are truly like.

Be deeply observant.  See
how the world works.  See how other people feel, think and act.  Be objective
and observant.

And from this deep
understanding of the world which surrounds you, you will be able to find a
center of power which makes sense not only for you and your internal world and
wishes, but for the world of which you are a part.

Introduction to Tarot

Week 5: Tarot Spreads
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
By now you should be feeling pretty comfortable with the idea of looking at a card and figuring out not only its meaning, but how it applies to you. After all, you've been pulling cards each day, right? Have you noticed that one card keeps appearing more than others? Is there a trend towards a certain number or suit?

This week, we'll work on two very simple spreads that you can use, which will help you look at different aspects of a question. If we look at Tarot cards as a tool of guidance, rather than just "fortune telling," we can use them to evaluate a situation to decide on the right course of action. Today we'll look at the Pentagram spread, which looks at the cards in relation to their connection to the elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Spirit. We'll also learn the Romany spread, which can be used for an overview of past, present and future.

Tarot Spreads
The Pentagram Spread

The pentagram is a five-pointed star sacred to many Pagans and Wiccans, and within this magical symbol you'll find a number of different meanings. Within the pentagram, each of the five points has a meaning. They symbolize the four classical elements -- Earth, Air, Fire and Water -- as well as Spirit, which is sometimes referred to as the fifth element. Each of these aspects is incorporated into this Tarot card layout. Go There

The Romany Spread

The Romany Tarot spread is a simple one, and yet it reveals a surprising amount of information. This is a good spread to use if you are just looking for a general overview of a situation, or if you have several different interconnected issues that you're trying to resolve. This is a fairly free-form spread, which leaves a lot of room for flexibility in your interpretations. It's easy to read the Romany spread by looking simply at the past, present and future. However, you can go into more depth and get a more complex understanding of the situation if you break it down into its different aspects. Go There

Exercise: Practice a Layout

This week, your homework assignment is to practice the Romany and the Pentagram layouts. Use them to read for yourself every day -- and at least once, try to read for someone else. If you're worried that you'll get things "wrong," don't panic. Ask a good friend or trusted family member to let you read for them, using one of the above spreads. Let them know you need some practice, and ask them to give you honest feedback about how you're doing.

Next Week: The Celtic Cross

For our final lesson, we'll learn the Celtic Cross method of Tarot readings. It's one of the most complex methods out there, but it also provides a significant amount of insight into a situation. We'll also talk about what to do if readings go wrong, and readers share their stories of Tarot readings from Hell! Have a magical week, and be sure to practice at least one of these layouts every day.

Goddess of The Day:  NARU KAMI Hari Kuyo (Japan)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed Dec 8, 2010 9:39 am (PST)

Goddess of The Day: NARU KAMI
Hari Kuyo (Japan)

Themes: Offerings; Excellence; Arts
Symbols: Needles; Thunder and Lightning; Trees

About Naru Kami: In Japan this Goddess embodies the odd combination of weather magick and artistic
inspiration. Perhaps this is how we come by the phrase "Struck by lightning" to describe a flash of creativity.
In local tradition, any place hit by lightning is thereafter sacred to Naru Kami. She is also the protectress of trees.

To Do Today: Participants in this festival, known as the Mass for Broken Needles, honor the ancient art of
sewing by bringing broken or bent needles into temples and later consigning them to the sea with thankfulness.
We can translate this observance into a blessing for any creative tool, be it a paintbrush, clay, a musical instrument,
or even a computer! Take the item and wrap it in green paper (which comes from the goddess's sacred trees).
Leave it on your altar or in your work-room for the day so Naru Kami can fill it with her inspiring energy.

For those, who sew, crochet, or knit, definitely take out your needles today and leave them in a special spot with an
offering for the Goddess, cakes or tofu being customary. At the end of the day, take these up and use them in your
craft to honor Naru Kami and commemorate this holiday with your skills.

Prayer at Cathedral of Our Lady Maastricht, Holland

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Wed Dec 8, 2010 9:41 am (PST)

Dearest mother, I come to you with greatest trust.
The many wonders brought on by your intercession
fill me with hope that you, Mother of Mercy, will hear my prayer.
O sweetest mother, O most merciful star of the sea,
do not let me go from here without your answer.
Remember, merciful virgin, that those who come to you
full of trust have never been forsaken by you. Should I
be the first one to go away unheard by you?
No, no, O good mother, may you help me in my
distress and comfort me in my suffering.
~Prayer at Cathedral of Our Lady Maastricht, Holland

Today is an especially significant day in the Mariological calendar of the Catholic Church, for it is the feast
of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. In the nineteenth centruy, a new doctrine was established
by the church: that Mary had been born without original sin. Some 1,500 years previously, an African bishop
named Augustine had articulated the idea that we are born with our souls already stained with sin, so that
even before we take our first breath, our very humanity makes us sinful. Thus a baby who died at birth would
be condemned to hell - although this cruel doctrine was later mitigated so that the innocent babes would reside
instead in limbo, which is a kind of hell minus the flames.

But how could the blessed mother of god be so stained? To wriggle out of the obvious theological difficulties,
the church then backdated holiness to Mary's very birth, declaring her the only human being ever born without
original sin. Those who grow up in the shadow of this sad doctrine must fight constantly not to believe that our
humanity alone curses us. As creations of the divine universe, how can we be so hopelessly defective? We are,
like the virgin mother, born without sin.

APHRODITE

APHRODITE

Muse, tell me the deeds of golden Aphrodite the Cyprian,

Who stirs up sweet passion in the gods

And subdues the tribes of mortal men and birds that fly in air

Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love; she has one duty and one only:
to make love.[1] She is supremely feminine, sublimely beautiful and so
attractive that no man [or woman] can resist her charms. Her dominion is
desire, the rapture of love and sexual ecstasy.

Aphrodite was 'foam-born' [aphros] from the sea when the castrated
genitals of Uranus [the father of the gods] were thrown into it by his
son Cronos. The ocean began to churn about them, until the lovely
Aphrodite arose from the spume, naked and accompanied by doves and
sparrows. She sailed to shore on a scallop shell, blown by the east
wind, emerging from the sea at Paphos on the island of Cyprus. Flowers
sprang from her footsteps. Cyprus was certainly her cult centre, and
there are many sanctuaries of Aphrodite spread throughout the island.
Her temple at Paphos was renowned throughout the ancient world. It
probably blended oriental and Aegean influences in its rites, combining
elements of traditions originating with the Mesopotamian Ishtar and the
Phoenician Astarte. Excavations have shown that her cult there was
certainly established by the Late Bronze Age [c. 1200 BCE] and continued
unbroken for 1500 years to the Late Roman period at the end of the 4th
century CE. However, it is possible that the cult predates even this,
being already present in the Chalcolithic period.

Aphrodite's chief festival was called the 'Aphrodisiac' , a word that is
still familiar to us today. Its modern meaning concerns substances that
arouse sexual desire, and this is not very different from the worship
of Aphrodite, whose rites included sexual congress between her
priestesses and her worshippers. Because she was sea born, sea food is
still widely considered to be an aphrodisiac.

When Zeus, the chief of the gods, beheld the joyful and glamorous young
goddess, he was afraid that the gods would fight over her. In
consequence, and somewhat against her will, he married her to the lame
smith god, Hephaestus, who instantly adored her. He put his skills to
work, making her exquisite jewellery. Say she possesses a magic girdle
of his design, which makes her irresistible, and which she usually
refuses to lend to the other goddesses. However, the ugly god was no
maiden's dream of love, and, given her nature, it is perhaps not
surprising that she had a series of affairs. Hephaestus thought that the
children she bore were his, but the truth was that they were all the
offspring of other gods and even human men. Hermes was the father of the
androgynous Hermaphroditus, Poseidon the father of Rhodus ['Rose'] and
Herophilus ['Lover of Hera']. Her favourite lover, the handsome and
impetuous war god Ares was the father of Phobus ['Fear'], Deimus
['Fearful'], and Harmonia, goddess of harmonious marriage. To the wild
god Dionysus [or some say Adonis] she bore Priapus, a comic figure with
huge genitals, which were inflicted on him by Hera as a sign of her
disapproval of Aphrodite's promiscuity.

A story of Aphrodite and Ares appears in Homer's Odyssey and relates how
they secretly lay together. Now Helios, the sun, could see everything
that happened everywhere, and told Hephaestus what was going on. The
angry smith went to his workshop and invented an ingenious net, as fine
as gossamer but unbreakable, which he fixed to his marriage bed, telling
Aphrodite that he was going away to Corinth on business. As soon as he
was gone, Aphrodite sent for Ares. The two lovers, oblivious to all but
their mutual lust, fell into the trap. Hephaestus summoned the gods to
witness his dishonour. They gathered around to see the two lovers in
such an undignified position. Apollo asked Hermes how he would feel in
such a situation. Hermes answered that he would suffer thrice the number
of bonds if only he could share the bed of Aphrodite the Golden.
Hephaestus refused to free the lovers until the Zeus returned his bridal
gifts. Zeus was disgusted that Hephaestus should have made the affair
so public and refused. Poseidon, seeing the naked Aphrodite, fell in
love with her and promised that Ares would return the price, and agreed
to stand surety if he defaulted and marry Aphrodite himself. After being
freed, Aphrodite went to her sacred precinct on Cyprus where she was
bathed in the sea by the Graces to renew her virginity, as she was after
every sexual adventure. Naturally, her husband could not live without
her, and forgave her before long.

Her adventures often caused troubles and a great deal of bloodshed,
which is probably the origin of her association with the god of war.
Unrequited love and frustrated desire are at the bottom of a great deal
of trouble. She caused the Trojan war by promising the married Helen to
Paris, prince of Troy, who stole her away from her husband, Menelaos.
She interfered several times in the subsequent war, once to save the
life of Paris, and once to save the life of her own son by a mortal,
Aeneas, thus prolonging the war.

Another of her lovers was Adonis, a vegetation god. Now it happened that
both Persephone, the Queen of the Underworld, and Aphrodite fell in
love with the beautiful youth, and they quarrelled over who should have
him. Zeus appointed the muse Calliope to arbitrate, and she decided that
Aphrodite should have Adonis for one third of the year, Persephone for
another third, and that he should have one third to himself. However,
Aphrodite was not happy with this and decided to cheat. She donned her
magic girdle, making Adonis want to be with her all the time. Persephone
reported this to Ares, who flared up in a jealous rage. He transformed
himself into a wild boar and tore Adonis to pieces. From each drop of
blood that fell, a red flower bloomed. Zeus decreed that Adonis must
spend the winter with Persephone, but could spend the summer with
Aphrodite. When Adonis was with his beloved Aphrodite the land bloomed
and the people rejoiced, but when he was with Persephone in the
Underworld winter came and the people mourned.

As the world grew more patriarchal and prudish, Aphrodite's gifts and
orgiastic nature were looked upon with contempt or horror, but
originally her rites were sacred. Sex constituted a sacred act, and was
the proper way to honour the goddess of love and desire. Though at first
she seems to be a simple goddess of love, Aphrodite is a complex
figure. Her domain seems to have encompassed the fertility of animals,
plants and human beings. The fact that she renews her virginity in a
spring after each sexual encounter proclaims her to be an earth
mother/fertility goddess, who gives birth each year to the crops, and is
renewed in the springtime, washed clean by the spring rains.

Aphrodite has one sphere of influence- love in all its forms. As
Aphrodite Benetrix she rules married love, and as Aphrodite Porne [which
gives us our word pornography] she rules erotic love. These different
types of love may sometimes be incompatible. Love gives us the
opportunity to unite with another, with a lover or as part of a family
or community, uniting to make a single whole which is greater than the
sum of its parts. Aphrodite Urania ['Heavenly Aphrodite'] rules
spiritual love, which is unconditional and which embraces the whole of
creation. This kind of love is eternally flowing and perpetually
available to you whenever you open your heart to receive it.

'May we live in peace without weeping. May our joy outline the lives we touch without ceasing. And may our love fill the world, angel wings tenderly beating.'   The Universal Heart Center   http://www.freewebs.com/moshayra

Life as We Know It
The Status Quo
Are you more attached to preserving the status quo than to honoring the universal givens of growth and change?

When our lives are going well, and sometimes even when they aren't, we may find ourselves feeling very attached to the status quo of our existence--life as we know it. It is a very human tendency to resist change as though it were possible to simply decide not to do it, or have it in our lives. But change will come and the status quo will go, sooner or later, with our consent or without it. We may find at the end of the day that we feel considerably more empowered when we find the courage to ally ourselves with the universal force of change, rather than working against it.

Of course, the answer is not to go about changing things at random, without regard to whether they are working or not. There is a time and place for stability and the preservation of what has been gained over time. In fact, the ability to stabilize and preserve what is serving us is part of what helps us to survive and thrive. The problem comes when we become more attached to preserving the status quo than to honoring the universal givens of growth and change. For example, if we allow a situation we are in to remain stagnant simply because we are comfortable, it may be time for us to summon up the courage to challenge the status quo.

This may be painful at times, or surprisingly liberating, and it will most likely be a little of both. Underneath the discomfort, we will probably find excitement and energy as we take the risk of unblocking the natural flow of energy in our lives. It is like dismantling a dam inside ourselves, because most of the work involves clearing our own inner obstacles so that the river of our life can flow unobstructed. Once we remove the obstacles, we can simply go with the flow, trusting the changes that follow.
