Fertility Goddess Asherah: Was 'God's Wife' Edited Out of the Bible?

Fertility Goddess Asherah: Was 'God's Wife' Edited Out of the Bible?
Some scholars say early versions of the Bible featured Asherah, a powerful fertility goddess who may have been God's wife.
Research by Francesca Stavrakopoulou, a senior lecturer in the department of Theology and Religion at the University of Exeter, unearthed clues to her identity, but good luck finding mention of her in the Bible. If Stavrakopoulou is right, heavy-handed male editors of the text all but removed her from the sacred book.
(More on TIME.com: See how Americans view God)
What remains of God's purported other half are clues in ancient texts, amulets and figurines unearthed primarily in an ancient Canaanite coastal city, now in modern-day Syria. Inscriptions on pottery found in the Sinai desert also show Yahweh and Asherah were worshipped as a pair, and a passage in the Book of Kings mentions the goddess as being housed in the temple of Yahweh.
J. Edward Wright, president of The Arizona Center for Judaic Studies and The Albright Institute for Archaeological Research, backs Stavrakopoulou's findings, saying several Hebrew inscriptions mention "Yahweh and his Asherah." He adds Asherah was not entirely edited out of the Bible by its male editors.
"Traces of her remain, and based on those traces... we can reconstruct her role in the religions of the Southern Levant," he told Discovery News.
(More on TIME.com: See pictures of colorful religious festivals)
Asherah, he says, was an important deity in the Ancient Near East, known for her might and nurturing qualities. She was also known by several other names, including Astarte and Istar. But in English translations Ashereh was translated as "sacred tree."
"This seems to be in part driven by a modern desire, clearly inspired by the Biblical narratives, to hide Asherah behind a veil once again," Wright says.
Aaron Brody, director of the Bade Museum and an associate professor of Bible and archaeology at the Pacific School of Religion, says the ancient Israelites were polytheists, with only a "small majority" worshipping God alone. He says it was the exiling of an elite community within Judea and the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 586 B.C that lead to a more "universal vision of strict monotheism." *Marguerite Rigoglioso *- author of *Virgin Mother Goddesses of
Antiquity *and our show topic is*When God Was a Virgin Mother...and the
Eleusinian Mysteries Illuminated*. Very interesting stuff including
discussion of an older Athena - the one that wasn't birthed from Zeus'
head. And in our talk, we'll discuss a new interpretation for
Persephone's rape by Hades and much more. And more....Marguerite is
also the author of *The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece* and time
permitting we'll see how these books overlap!
*_March 9_ - Bob Walter*, Executive Director of the *Joseph Campbell
Foundation* discussed what it means to be a "mythic activist", the
importance of Joseph Campbell's work in the world, the hero/heroine's
journey, and how rational thought, and the I versus WE mentality,
replaced Goddess. I also plan to ask Bob: What happens when myths
become not metaphors but fact (aka religion) and how it contributes to
the agony of the world. When one understands the psychology of myth and
it's role in religion where does that leave most people on the subject
of God/ess? The Atheist? Can we reconcile believing in God/ess with
understanding myth and how can we reconcile myth with your own
spirituality/religion?
_*March 2*_ - ***Pam Wells*, author and artist of the beautiful and deep

_*February 23*_- */Charles Eisenstein/*, author of the *Ascent of
Humanity, Sacred Economics* will discuss our topic, A Revolution in
Human Beingness. And if that sounds a bit too vague or broad, I'm going
to ask Charles about his ideas for a new paradigm for humanity; circle
giving, being in co-creative partnership with earth, distinguishing
between the feminine/masculine Yin and Yang and how our state of
starvation for connection has resulted in our addiction to food, drugs,
shopping, sex, tv, electronics. Charles has been called one of the most
optimistic people around about nature and humanity. Hear his insights
and recommendations.
_*
*_*/Allan G. Johnson/*, author and speaker will discuss *class, gender
and privilege* and his fiction book on *domestic violence* titled The
First Thing and the Last. Hear how racism, patriarchy, economics, and
capitalism all work with white and male privilege and hear his views on
Christian privilege that seems so pervasive. Listen as he talks about
the dilemmas of manhood and fatherhood and how we can overcome these
obstacles of class, gender and privilege.
Time: 6PM Pacific/9PM Eastern. You'll have to make adjustments for

Bad News.................Oil is appearing in the Gulf again

Officials remain baffled over source of oil slick as Louisiana coastline is oiled againhttp://news.yahoo. com/s/yblog_ thelookout/ 20110322/ ts_yblog_ thelookout/ officials- remain-baffled- over-source- of-oil-slick- as-louisiana- coastline- is-oiled- again
By Brett Michael Dykes brett Michael Dykes – Tue Mar 22, 11:06 am ET
Days after observers spotted a massive oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico, no one in a position of power seems to yet know where it's coming from. So far, official reports are sketchy and contradictory, as New Orleans Time-Picayune reporter Mark Schleifstein notes in reviewing a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard:
"At this point, the dark substance is believed to be caused by a tremendous amount of sediment being carried down the Mississippi River due to high water, possibly further agitated by dredging operations," the Coast
Guard release said.
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers, however, said none of the
three dredges operating near the mouth of the Mississippi River has
reported any oil in the material they're removing from the river bottom
to keep the channel deep enough for ocean-going ships.
But as Louisiana officials and the Coast Guard
conduct tests to determine the source, an all-too-familiar scene is
developing over a 30-mile stretch of coast: Oil and oil byproducts such
as tarballs have come rolling in. And teams of workers are rolling out a containment boom—the fencelike
structures designed to keep oil from washing ashore—as oil-skimming
vessels try to intercept the oil on the water's surface. And where the
oil has landed, cleanup crews are scouring up the petroleum mess.
"We have 10,000 feet of hard boom and 9,000 feet of
five-inch sorbent boom ordered into the area. We have 5,000 feet of each boom already delivered and staged in Grand Isle," Coast Guard Capt.
Jonathan Burton said in a statement.
Meanwhile, residents of
the Louisiana Gulf community of Grand Isle, who thought they'd finally
turned the page on the nightmare of last year's BP spill, have noticed
crude invading once again.
"I was out there from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. yesterday and
the stuff came in in waves onto the island and through Caminada Pass,"
Grand Isle resident Betty Doudtold the Times- Picayune. "There were these orange, nasty waves and black oil mixed with it. The oil was in the rocks along the pass."

What's Happening Today:
Slavic Pagan: Maslenitsa - Suhii (March) 21 - Maslenitsa is a very ancient festival, the holiday of the Spring Equinox and the end of the winter frosts.People enjoy themselves, engaging in much feasting, dancing, wearing of masks, playing on traditional musical instruments, and contests of strength, all to enact spring unbridled, in action and fighting. Traditional pastries are also baked, called blini (a type of potato pancake), to symbolize the sun.
Attis - Attis was the lover and grandson of Cybele, the Attic Goddess who was known as mother of mountains and depicted flanked by lions. When Attis betrayed her, she hunted him down and drove him insane. He tore off his genitals because they had caused him to betray her.
Originally a Phyrgian goddess, Cybele's worship was imported to Rome, where she was called Magna Mater (Great Mother). Emperor Claudius popularized the Phyrgian tradition of bringing a young pine tree representing Attis into the city like a corpse, swathed in linen and woolen sashes and decked with violets. Members of the Tree Bearer's Guild (dendrophori) carried it through the city gate and into Cybele's sanctuary which stood on Vatican Hill, near where St Peter's stands now. Artistic Empowerment from Minerva Ritual

Artistic Empowerment from Minerva Ritual
The ancient Roman festival of Quinquatria is also known as the
Festival of Minerva. Minerva is the Roman Goddess of war and of wisdom,
the arts, and the trades. She is the Roman counterpart to the Greek
Goddess Athena, who is honored by artisans and students. To enhance your artistic talents at this time, empower your spell with the energies of
Minerva. Find a tool that represents your craft or trade and place it on your altar. For example, a person who is creative at sewing might use a needle or some embroidery cotton. For a painter, it could be a brush or paints. With pride in your art, speak this spell:
With this tool
I dedicate my art
To nourish the creativity
That flows from my heart.
Dedicate your next creative product to Minerva.

Indian Poet Ramakrishna
Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM chic0411
Tue Mar 22, 2011 7:37 pm (PDT)
She is mad, her lover is mad, and I am mad for loving her!
This world is bewitched by the lovely Goddess.
No one can describe how lovely she is, how glorious,
how perfect her gestures, how sudden her moods.
Her lover, poisoned with love for her, calls out her name
endlessly, singing Kali's name over and over and over.
Life has its currents, cycles, tides which ebb and flow.
She looks upon them all with equanimity.
Nothing is opposite in her mind: not life, not death;
not love, not hate; not the self, not the void.
Your raft, the poet said, floats upon the sea of life.
It drifts up with the tide, and down with the ebb.
But the Goddess is there. The Goddess is always there.
~Indian Poet Ramakrishna
On this day, when light and darkness are briefly equal, before the
light grows and swells and carries the world into summer, it is good to
meditate upon the ultimate falsity of all divisions. Kali, the fierce
Hindu goddess, reminds us of that truth: that existence is not bound by
our false dualities. There is no light, no darkness in Kali's world.
What she offers us is not a gray mixture of black and white, but a
paradoxical world in which both exists in all moments, at all points, in all ways. Life is both pain and pleasure, love and hate. Kali is beyond both, but includes both.
Meditating upon Kali is one of the great traditions of Hindu India. The paradoxes and mysteries she expresses are almost beyond words,
though great poets like Ramakrishna have spent lifetimes trying. As the
sun dances briefly in her perfect balance, let us join the poet in
marveling at the power of the Goddess.
