Beltane

La Baal Tinne, Beltane, Beltain, all are names for the ritual which was traditionally held on May 1st, also known as May Day. The astrological festival occurs when the Sun reaches 15 ° Taurus, which lately has been happening more towards May 4-6th. Either the traditional date or the astrological date can be used to determine when to hold your festival as both will have significant energies for the season.

And the season is Spring! The lusty month of May is called so for a reason! Watch the animals, they are "rutting" now, looking to attract mates to raise their families. Butterflies and insects are pollinating flowers all over, and trees are bursting into blossoms and new green growth. In spring, "the young man's fancy turns to love.." and the young
girls fancies turn to young men!

Beltane, named for the Celtic Sun God, Bel, or Bal, or Baal, also means Bale, to banish, as in the bale fires, which are lit on Beltane to cleanse and purify. Cattle were led between two fires to cleanse them, and I have heard theories that the Druids quite possibly may have put purifying herbs on the fires to physically help the process along, but there is no actual proof of this. Couples would jump the fire to bless their union and to make it fruitful. You can jump the fire to leave behind bad habits or thoughts. Or stand close enough to the fire so that it's heat can "burn out" sickness. You may call upon the flames to burn away whatever you want to be free of by mentally casting it into the fire.

Virgin women would jump the fire to be blessed by a child of the fire, an immaculate conception, as it were. The fire symbolizes life, passion, love and sex, and can also protect you for the coming year. To gaze into the flames and become "firestruck" is to cause an altered state of consciousness that is useful for divination.

"Nine woods in the Bale fire go, Burn them fast and burn them slow..."
(from the Wiccan Rede) Those nine woods were usually:

Oak for the God
Birch for the Goddess
Fir for birth
Willow for death
Rowan for magic
Apple for love
Grapevine for joy
Hazel for wisdom
Hawthorne for purity and for May

Now of course if you live in an area, such as South Florida, where there is a definite lack of some of these woods (such as apple) you can always substitute another wood - as long as this wood is also known for the same properties! So do some research, and make intelligent substitutions.

Probably the most memorable and obvious symbol of Beltane is the May Pole. A phallic symbol, it represents the male regenerative force in nature, and is used to show the Sacred Union between the Goddess and God that takes place at this time. The pole represents the God of course, and the earth represents the Goddess. Red and white were the traditional colors of the ribbons on the pole, and there are different explanations for them, one being that they represent the male semen and the female menstrual blood, and are a reminder that this is a "game" that only men and women enjoy, and is not for children. The other is that the red and white represent the two fluids that women safely give, milk and blood, of which men were in awe.

Either way, these can still be seen in the caduceus, the symbol of healing and also the red and white barbers pole. In ancient times, the Doctor was also the Barber, hence the similar symbolism!

Today we choose a ribbon color which represents something we wish to "weave" into our lives as we weave it onto the pole, hopefully something that will also benefit the community as a whole, since this is a communal dance. Yellow for wisdom and inspiration, orange for success, blue for peace, or peace of mind, pink for friendship or patience, green can be healing or financial gain, white for health, and protection, etc. I have even seen rainbow ribbons, and also plaid ribbons! They certainly do stand out in the pattern.

The pole is erected, with appropriate ritual ceremony (see the file containing the ritual for this Sabbat for details), with the ribbons all tied to the top of the pole. The dancers stand in the circle around it
each holding to the ends of the ribbon. Typically this is done with the males and females alternating around the circle, but we almost never have an exactly even number, and it doesn't matter that much. If you do have an almost equal number, then you can have all the males go deosil, and the females go widdershins (clockwise and counter-clockwise) as they go around the pole. If your numbers are too uneven, then have the participants count off by twos, with all the number "ones" going one way and the number "twos" going opposite.

It is better to have some lively music to dance to, we use Celtic jigs and reels, and have a half hour tape with just that on it, which is easy to leave on the player, so it can be unattended. 30 minutes is quite sufficient, even a bit long! Believe me, unless you are a professional dancer, you will be tired out long before 30 minutes are over. You can also use Louisiana Cajun zydeco, or Tennessee bluegrass, as well as the Celtic songs, since all of these have a similar beat, and are very lively. That is the most important thing for a successful dance, because
we have found that chanting leaves you out of breath very quickly.

To start the dance, have all the people facing deosil raise their ribbons and the people going widdershins will go under them. Then the widdershins group will raise their ribbons and the deosil group will go
under them. So it continues, over and under, over and under, as you progress around the pole. Very quickly a beautiful pattern will emerge, as these bright ribbons are woven together. Don't worry if people forget which way they were supposed to go, this often happens when you have first time dancers, or an uneven number of people, someone is bound to go under when they should have gone over, no matter. It is the enjoyment of the dance that matters most, not whether the weave comes out perfect, and no one can tell the difference anyway!

When the ribbons become too short to allow for comfortably continuing, then it is time to tie off. Tie the ribbon to the pole at the end of the weaving, and you can leave the ribbon hanging loose below the knot. Some groups leave the ribbons on year after year, and simply allow them to build up on the pole, until they decide a new pole is needed, then the old pole with all the layers of ribbons, is ritually burned during the Beltane circle. Other groups will carefully work the old ribbons off the pole just prior to this year's dance, and these ribbons will be ritually burned in the balefire. Of course, you could use a new pole each year, and ritually burn the old pole with ribbons intact. Another exception I have seen is where a wheel was used at the top of the pole, and this group actually "unwove" all the ribbons, and left the pole bare again. Personally, I think that it is undoing the magick of weaving into your life if you unweave the ribbons after the dance, but each group must decide for themselves what works best for them.

In our groups, we have men and women, and there is a lot of playing that goes on in the Maypole dance. We kiss, we stroke, we nuzzle a neck here or an outer thigh there, or we give a quick pat on the posterior as we pass by the person. These are all welcome and perfectly expected in our group, and we announce ahead of time, that if anyone is uncomfortable with that then please let us know now so we will not invade their space. You can tell when someone is "unapproachable", they will let you know that these advances are not welcome, and you should honor that. Some groups I know have asked participants not to do any touching or kissing as they dance, and while that may make all the cowans more comfortable, it also leaves the energy of the dance flat.

For this is a dance for fertility! For abundance of the fields! For abundance in our lives! It was meant to be a courtship dance and to raise the libido of both those dancing and those watching, and to add to the sexual flavor that permeates this Sabbat. Keep that in mind, and the pats, hugs, kisses, and squeezes, are simply affection between friends and NOT sexual harassment! Please bear in mind that this is a Sabbat about sexual fertility, and it was very important to our ancestors, and it is a lot of fun for us today. One of the biggest taboos in mainstream religions is about sex, and we as Pagans have always understood the real power behind sexual energy. Please let's not let a "sue happy" society ruin this aspect of our religion and take this away from us! Keep it joyous as it was intended.

Another Beltane tradition is that of electing a King and Queen of the May, a young women and man, who may not necessarily be a couple already, or they can be newlyweds. They are crowned with flowered wreaths, and paraded before everyone, while people cheer "Hurrah for the King and Queen of the May!" In ancient times, this couple would be expected to go into the woods and consummate the energy of the circle for abundant hunts during the coming year, or in the fields for abundant crops. It was not unusual for young ladies and young men to pair off in the forest, and was called a "green wedding". Any child which was a result of those unions was considered a great blessing. This is also the reason for so many June weddings, and why the period after the wedding is call the "Honeymoon", after the Moon in June, which is also called the Honey Moon.

The "scarf chase" is another Beltane tradition, which the couple who are the King and Queen of the May or the couple who are the Lord and Lady, will start. The Lady teases the Lord with a green scarf, and then drops it as his feet as a signal for him to pursue her. She eludes him success fully for a few rounds, then allows him to catch her and rewards his efforts with a kiss. The scarf can then be passed on to another women to do the same to a man of her choice. This originated as a courtship ritual at a time when sexuality was not expressed openly, and was a way for a woman to tastefully let a man know that she was interested in him in a publicly acceptable manner. (Many of our traditional courtship rituals were evolved when it was not considered "lady like" or "genteel" for men and women to be open about their partnership preferences.)

Another variation is to use a wreath with flowers in it, and the woman walks around the circle parading it before her, as men attempt to take a flower out of the wreath. Whoever is successful is rewarded with a kiss, and the wreath is them passed on to another woman. These "chases" can be used to lead into the Spiral dance, which is another Beltane ritual dance, but is used at other Sabbats as well.

The Spiral dance is especially appropriate at Beltane, in that it is reminiscent of the DNA chain. (Which of course we are told our ancestors knew nothing about!) To do the Spiral dance, one person starts by taking the hand of someone next to her, and they take another hand, and so on until all are holding hands and moving in a circle. Usually, the step done with the feet is called the "grapevine" step, and involves one foot crossing in front of the other, then the other foot crossing behind, and the knees are kept flexed for balance. However, the main reason why this is a Spiral dance is that the first person leads the dancers in a tighter and tighter ring toward the center, then abruptly turns inward to face the other dancers, and still everyone follows. The end result is that all the dancers face another person, and the circle then spirals outward again. This sometimes takes practice, but remember not to duck under anyone's arms, for this will only end up in a knot! (Knots can be fun, too, but they do interrupt the flow of energy in the dance!)

Beltane is the exact opposite of Samhain on the wheel of the year, and just as Samhain is an acknowledgement and celebration of death, so Beltane is an equally powerful reaffirmation of life. Other societies have had traditions in the same manner, and have myths that equate with ours regarding the Sacred Union of Lord and Lady; indeed that of all nature, without which life on this planet would cease to exist. Beltane and Samhain are considered the two most powerful, most important Sabbats, and there were cultures that celebrated only those two for many centuries. Today we have the Solar Sabbats and the Agricultural Sabbats, that were the celebrations of two types of culture which were "married" together to form the wheel of the year we know. And of these Sabbats, still the two most powerful and most important are Samhain and Beltane.

Have a joyous, powerful, and wonderful Beltane everyone!

Blessed Be,
Lady Nightshayde

How The Moon Affects Your Moods
Part 1

Our Moon is the Queen of the Night, the ultimate feminine energy. She's a lovely lady in silver who circles our planet protectively in her monthly--or should I say "moonthly"--orbit, amazing us with her ability to change, yet remain constant. As the Head of the Department of Feelings, she's also the bringer of moods--another great Moon word--and the Keeper of the Ambiance. Her subtle power is apparent in the tides, as she calls the ocean to her and sends it away, but we feel her influence ebb and flow through our bodies, too. Our changing emotions are a powerful reminder that she is also in charge of the internal ocean of fluids that keep us alive. She shows off her magic as she shivers and dances on the water, insisting that we watch, but, in truth, it's impossible not to look at her, especially when she's Full. The Moon doesn't just invite us to look, she hypnotizes us as she appears and disappears, winding her way around the Earth. No matter what her phase, she makes us sigh and dream and wish, and she brings back memories. When she disappears to rest and lay her plans at Dark Moon, we search for her and wonder what magic she's about to conjure up in our lives.

In our charts, the Moon is just as much of an enigma. She prefers to react, rather than act, so she stands back and watches from her vantage point in our bellies. She offers her counsel to our Sun as it charges through life gobbling up experiences. She's where we keep our instinct and our ability to express our feelings. She points both to how we were nurtured and how we'll nurture, and makes us aware of the incredible bond we share with our mother--the human whose body we actually lived inside for nine months. She decides what's safe for us and what's not, and shows how we'll cope when we're hurt. She's silent, potent, and ever-present, the undercurrent that flows through each of our days, subtly but powerfully influencing our reactions to what life has to offer.

The Moon Through The Signs

Since the Moon flows through a sign every two-and-a-half days, her reputation for constant change is well deserved. Signs describe how we'll do the things we do--like a costume or an outfit that shows the style of behavior a planet will display as it goes about its business. The Moon changes her symbolic costume even more than Mercury, the fastest of planets, who whips through a sign in as little as two weeks. Since the Moon rules the emotional tone of the day, which tells us what to expect from one another collectively, it's good to know what type of mood she's in at any given moment. Since she's the subtle undercurrent that produces our own moods, too, the sign she was in when we were born says an awful lot about how we'll express our feelings when they rear their little heads. Well, here's your answer-key, a thumbnail sketch to help you understand the Moon both as she appears in people around you and as she influences the tone of the day.

ARIES: Here's the Moon in her fiery best, strutting around in red, feeling bold, impulsive, and extremely energetic. This is Mar's favorite sign, so you'll know when the Moon is here without even checking your calendar. It's a two-day period when everyone's feeling feisty and argumentative, when nobody's about to let you step on their blue-suede shoes and get away with it, when even the meekest of us aren't afraid to take a stand in our own defense--especially to protect our feelings. Since Aries is the first sign, and a natural starting point for all kinds of projects, this Moon sign is also a wonderful time to channel all that "me-first" energy to initiate changes and new beginnings. Just watch out for a tendency to be too impulsive and stress oriented.

If you were born with the Moon in Aries, God help anyone who hurts you. They'll be conjuring the wrath of the War-God, Ares--and he's no lightweight. You folks learned early on to defend yourselves. As a result, it's natural for you to fire first and aim later when you feel as if you're under attack emotionally. You also learned that if your needs were going to be taken care of, you'd have to do it yourself, so these are the true survivors of the Zodiac, even more so than Aries Suns. This Moon/Mars combination also points to the fact that no matter what it is you're feeling, it's going to come out passionately. If you're sad, you'll act it out by expressing anger. If you're happy, you'll be extremely high-energy--just take a look at these examples of Aries Moons: Marlon Brando, Ellen Burstyn, James Cagney, Grace Jones, Lily Tomlin, Jerry Garcia. (See? Not a quitter--or quiet one--in the bunch.)

TAURUS: The Moon in Taurus garb is in her earthiest finery, all done up in rich browns and fertile greens. This Moon sign is The Lady at her most solid and sensual, feeling secure and well-rooted in her sister Venus's garb. There's no need to stress or hurry--and definitely no need to change anything. That's how you'll feel when the Moon is in this sign--that all is quite well in your world, thank you, and there's no need to rock the boat. We tend to resist all changes when the Moon is in this sign, and most especially those changes that are not of our own making. We'd rather sit still, have a wonderful dinner, and listen to good music. We're into appreciating physical pleasures and enjoying the beauty of this Earth planet--a truly Venusian activity--when the Moon is here. It's time to watch a sunset, view some good art, take care of money and other resources, and hug the ones we love.

If you were born with the Moon in this sign--lucky you! Your Moon is one of the happiest around. You're well equipped to handle emotions of any kind. Nothing--but nothing--rocks you. Not for long. You're the very soul of constancy--in times of turmoil, you put up, bear up, and stay put. You may even be a bit too constant, in fact. Watch for a tendency to fall into an emotional rut--because once you start feeling, it's difficult for you to stop. You love quality in all things--friends included. When the going gets tough, you do, indeed, go shopping--and because you're so fond of shopping, you have the coziest, cushiest nest around, full of pretty things--beautiful art, soft couches, down pillows, and expensive chocolates. Your soul comes alive when there's music playing and at least one bottle of 100-year-old scotch or very fine wine on the premises. Regardless of your sex, you're the Earth Mother we're all looking for. Thank you for spreading your warmth over us--and just look at the company you keep: Glen Campbell, Mick Jagger, Elton John, Vincent Price, Diana Ross. (Singers, musicians, gourmet chefs, and entrepreneurs--and everyone with that "I Have A Right To Be Here" attitude.)

GEMINI: Gemini Moons are built for activity. This is a mutable air sign, so it likes to move around--quickly--and when the Moon is passing through this sign, we like to travel quickly, too. This Moon's costume is a coat of many colors, appropriate to her motto: "Variety is the spice of life." Since Gemini is the sign that's ruled by Mercury, the Head of the Communications Department, we're suddenly in the mood for witty conversation, and for puzzles, riddles, and word games. We want two (at least two) of everything and we're a bit more restless than usual. Now is a great time for letter writing, phone calls, or short trips. Now's when you'll find the best shortcuts and when you'll need to take them, too--everyone tends to plan an awful lot of activity under Gemini Moons. Watch for a tendency to become a bit scattered, however, when the Moon is here. Basically, this fun, fickle, airy Moon was tailor-made for having just a taste of everything.

If you were born with the Moon in this sign, you're an expert at flexibility and mobility--which might mean that you drive a lot, and might mean that you move a lot. In fact, if you own a Gemini Moon, you may move so much that you can't ever remember your current area code, or your zip code, or which channels go with which networks in the town you're currently transiting. Still, after only a month or two, you'll be the best shortcut finder around, and you'll know everyone at every business you frequent. You have the innate instincts of a writer and the mind of a coyote. Fickle? Well, maybe, but only if you're bored. Boredom, in fact, is the one thing this Moon sign just can't stand. Yes, you will "communicate in your home." Yes, that may mean that you'll teach classes in your living room, but it might also mean that you'll spend a lot of time on the phone. You're the inspiration for the phrase "incredible lightness of being." Movement, words, wit, and flight of some kind are deep in your soul. Here's the company you keep: Fred Astaire, George Carlin, Buddy Holly, Amelia Earhart. (By the way, it's absolutely amazing how many Gemini Moons really are twins, have twins, or have "two mothers.")

CANCER: Here's the Moon in the sign she rules, at her most emotional and most nurturing. The Moon rules Cancer, so when she's here, she's home, lounging casually in her sea-greens and blues. Here the Moon's concerns turn to home, family, children, and mothers. We react by becoming more likely to express our emotions, to be sympathetic and understanding to others. Now, too, is when we often find ourselves in the mood to take care of someone, to cook or cuddle our dear ones. During this highly emotional sign, feelings run high, so it's important to watch out for becoming oversensitive, dependent, or needy. In all, now's a great time to putter around the house, have family over, and tend to domestic concerns.

If you were born with the Moon in this sign, you're among the best nurturers around. You're also undeniably one of the best huggers out there. There's no doubt that home and family are your main concerns--regardless of whether or not you actually choose to start a family of your own. And, yes, you'll probably also be very tight with your Mom. You're an expert at making a house a home, at choosing just the right foods, fabrics, and furnishings to create a safe, secure nest. You're a natural caregiver--the greatest danger in this wonderful quality is that you'll become so fond of that role that you'll need others to need you in order to feel "worthy"; in other words, avoid codependence at all costs. You're also the most private of the private, guarding your extremely sensitive little heart very, very cautiously. Because the Moon operates so purely here, you're driven primarily by your emotions--by how something hits you on a gut level. You operate on instinct--on memories of how things feel. You're in the record books with the most amazing caregivers around: Dr. Benjamin Spock, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

LEO: When the Moon is in Leo, it's time for drama with a capital D. This theatrical sign has long been known for its big entrances, love of display, and need for attention. Leo is ruled by the Sun, the center of the universe, the creative force, so when the Moon is in this sign, we're all feeling the need to be recognized, applauded, and appreciated. After all, this is the Moon in her royal robes, feeling as if someone ought to stop, bow, and ask her which country she's queen of. How, all that excitement, pride, and emotion can turn into histrionics and melodrama in the blink of an eye, so it's best to be careful of overreacting or being excessively vain over this period. It's a great time to take in a show (or star in one), be romantic, or express your feelings for someone in royal, regal style.

If you were born with the Moon in this sign, you just might have a bit of flair for the dramatic yourself. This Moon tends to display her emotions, regardless of what they are. That means you're likely to throw a tantrum when you're mad and an elaborate cocktail party in someone's honor when you're not. Of course, you act this way because you feel this way. Your Moon is a queen, for God's sake--so she demands deep respect. Like the other fire Moons, you'll act immediately to stop whatever is hurting you from hurting you. You've got the heart of a performer and the soul of a romantic. You want your feelings to be noticed above all else, but you also want to be appreciated for what you are on the inside. And speaking of drama, check out this roster: Clint Eastwood, David Bowie, Kris Kristofferson, Jane Fonda, Peter O'Toole, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand.

The Origins and Traditions of May Day

The Origins and Traditions of May Day

The international working class holiday; Mayday, originated in pagan Europe. It was a festive holy day celebrating the first spring planting. The ancient Celts and Saxons celebrated May 1st as Beltane or the day of fire. Bel was the Celtic god of the sun.

The Saxons began their May day celebrations on the eve of May, April 30. It was an evening of games and feasting celebrating the end of winter and the return of the sun and fertility of the soil. Torch bearing peasants and villager would wind their way up paths to the top of tall hills or mountain crags and then ignite wooden wheels which they would roll down into the fields.

The May eve celebrations were eventually outlawed by the Catholic church, but were still celebrated by peasants until the late 1700's. While good church going folk would shy away from joining in the celebrations, those less afraid of papal authority would don animal masks and various costumes, not unlike our modern Halloween. The revelers, lead by the Goddess of the Hunt; Diana (sometimes played by a pagan-priest in women's clothing) and the Horned God; Herne, would travel up the hill shouting, chanting and singing, while blowing hunting horns. This night became known in Europe as Walpurgisnacht, or night of the witches.

The Celtic tradition of Mayday in the British isles continued to be celebrated through-out the middle ages by rural and village folk. Here the traditions were similar with a goddess and god of the hunt.
As European peasants moved away from hunting gathering societies their gods and goddesses changed to reflect a more agrarian society. Thus Diana and Herne came to be seen by medieval villagers as fertility deities of the crops and fields. Diana became the Queen of the May and Herne became Robin Goodfellow (a predecessor of Robin Hood) or the Green Man.
The Queen of the May reflected the life of the fields and Robin reflected the hunting traditions of the woods. The rites of mayday were part and parcel of pagan celebrations of the seasons. Many of these pagan rites were later absorbed by the Christian church in order to win over converts from the 'Old Religion'.

Mayday celebrations in Europe varied according to locality, however they were immensely popular with artisans and villagers until the 19th Century. The Christian church could not eliminate many of the traditional feast and holy days of the Old Religion so they were transformed into Saint days.
During the middle ages the various trade guilds celebrated feast days for the patron saints of their craft. The shoemakers guild honored St. Crispin, the tailors guild celebrated Adam and Eve. As late as the 18th century various trade societies and early craft-unions would enter floats in local parades still depicting Adam and Eve being clothed by the Tailors and St. Crispin blessing the shoemaker.

The two most popular feast days for Medieval craft guilds were the Feast of St. John, or the Summer Solstice and Mayday. Mayday was a raucous and fun time, electing a queen of the May from the eligible young women of the village, to rule the crops until harbest. Our tradition of beauty pagents may have evolved , albeit in a very bastardized form, from the May Queen.
Besides the selection of the May Queen was the raising of the phallic Maypole, around which the young single men and women of the village would dance holding on to the ribbons until they became entwined, with their ( hoped for) new love.

And of course there was Robin Goodfellow, or the Green Man who was the Lord of Misrule for this day. Mayday was a celebration of the common people, and Robin would be the King/Priest/Fool for a day. Priests and Lords were the butt of many jokes, and the Green Man and his supporters; mummers would make jokes and poke fun of the local authorities. This tradition of satire is still conducted today in Newfoundland, with the Christmas Mummery.

The church and state did not take kindly to these celebrations, especially during times of popular rebellion. Mayday and the Maypole were outlawed in the 1600's. Yet the tradition still carried on in many rural areas of England. The trade societies still celebrated Mayday until the 18th Century.
As trade societies evolved from guilds, to friendly societies and eventually into unions, the craft traditions remained strong into the early 19th century. In North America Dominion Day celebrations in Canada and July 4th celebrations in the United States would be celebrated by tradesmen still decorating floats depicting their ancient saints such as St. Crispin.

Our modern celebration of Mayday as a working class holiday evolved from the struggle for the eight hour day in 1886. May 1, 1886 saw national strikes in the United States and Canada for an eight hour day called by the Knights of Labour. In Chicago police attacked striking workers killing six.

The next day at a demonstration in Haymarket Square to protest the police brutality a bomb exploded in the middle of a crowd of police killing eight of them. The police arrested eight anarchist trade unionists claiming they threw the bombs. To this day the subject is still one of controversy. The question remains whether the bomb was thrown by the workers at the police or whether one of the police's own agent provocateurs dropped it in their haste to retreat from charging workers.

In what was to become one of the most infamous show trials in America in the 19th century, but certainly not to be the last of such trials against radical workers, the State of Illinois tried the anarchist workingmen for fighting for their rights as much as being the actual bomb throwers. Whether the anarchist workers were guilty or innocent was irrelevant. They were agitators, fomenting revolution and stirring up the working class, and they had to be taught a lesson.

Albert Parsons, August Spies, George Engle and Adolph Fischer were found guilty and executed by the State of Illinois.
In Paris in 1889 the International Working Men's Association (the First International) declared May 1st an international working class holiday in commemoration of the Haymarket Martyrs. The red flag became the symbol of the blood of working class martyrs in their battle for workers rights.

Mayday, which had been banned for being a holiday of the common people, had been reclaimed once again for the common people.

Halloween Superstitions

Halloween Superstitions

Here are some Halloween superstitions for your own entertainment or to share--however you wish--with your family, friends, and guests during Halloween festivities.

*If a candle flame suddenly turns blue, a ghost is near at hand.

*Knocking on wood (preferably oak--sacred to the Celts) keeps evil away.

*To prevent ghosts from coming into the house, especially at Halloween, bury animal bones near the doorway, or bury the image of an animal in a sealed box or jar.

*If you see a spider on Halloween, it's a departed spirit from your past that is watching you.

*A child that has teeth when it is born will grow up to be a vampire.

*If Halloween night occurs on the night of a ful moon, the spirit world is all the closer, so intuition and divination are stronger (and caution and care are more advisable!)

*A fire lit or burning after sunset on Halloween should be kept burning until after midnight, or spirits may come around and do harm.

*In the United States, if an all-black cat crosses your path, it's bad luck. (Lady N's Note: Not in my book!) If an all-white cat crosses your path, it's good luck. In Great Britain and Ireland, it's just the opposite.

Recite this incantation before scrying into
your black mirror on Samhain eve...

"Mirror of shadow, reveal what I seek.
Powers of old, secrets so deep.

East then South, West and North.
Watch tower guards, I call you forth.

Traveling sphere, no harm to fear.
Circle protects, here and there.

Stars beyond, from Pluto's realm,
Scorpio rules God's golden sun.

By the power of three times three,

Halloween: The Past in the Present

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:06 pm (PDT)

HALLOWEEN: THE PAST IN THE PRESENT

The days are shortening and dark comes early. There is a certain crispness to the air as we stroll the streets. Before long, the leaves are turning bright colors, only to slowly drift down to
cover yards and streets.

Yes, autumn is here.

And with autumn comes a holiday enjoyed by both old and
young...Halloween.

What is the appeal of this night? Why do we find people ranging
from infants to grandparents donning costumes and for one night forgetting the mundane?

Halloween, or Samhain to the Pagans, has caught the imagination of people throughout the ages. From the ancient rituals honoring the dead to our modern custom of trick or treating, this one
night is our time to put aside any fear of the dark and embrace
any that walk there as welcome.

The ancients chose this time of year to celebrate the dead. The
harvests were done and the fields laid empty. The days of sun
were at a end and the days of dark were beginning. What better
time to celebrate the powers of darkness.

This was not a celebration of fear; not always has darkness
equaled fear. Instead for those who believed in rebirth, it was a
time to reach and touch those beliefs. Just as the fields now
laid bare, they would flower again in the spring. And so it was
with us, dying only to be reborn.

Picture of a Jack-o-Lantern So many of our Halloween customs can
be traced to the past and the habits of our ancestors. Each time
I look at the jack-o- lanterns shining with devilish grins, I can
picture the original lanterns. Turnips were hollowed out and
candles placed inside to protect them from the wind. These
lanterns were placed on window sills to guide the dead back to
their kin.

Since the apple harvest was celebrated at this same time, apples
often played an important place in the festivals. When you bob
for apples or dangle apples on strings, you are walking in the
footsteps of other people and other times.

Picture of Trick-or-Treaters What would Halloween be without
costumes and masks? Yet, have many of us wondered why we so enjoying the wearing of costumes? Dressing up frees us from the ties of our everyday life. For a brief moment of time, we become a princess or an Indian or a cartoon character. This gives us a
freedom of action that we normally wouldn't have.

Masks have also long been associated with death and the gods. Was
early man trying to understand death when he put on a mask of a
dead one? Perhaps, donning a mask could put us in touch with the
gods themselves.

Picture of a Black Cat The black cat, familiar to many a
storybook witch, was priced because cats could sense the dead.
They could be used as a kind of early warning system. Why black
cats? What better color for this time when the darkness rules?

Every where I look, I come face to face with the stereotyped
image of the witch. Wicked or not, they all looked alike:
greenish skin, a wart, misshapened face, dressed all in black. In
these days of striving for the politically correct, many are
trying to remove this image from Halloween celebrations. I guess
they don't see what I do. I look at the Halloween witches and
remember pictures of the dark Goddess, dressed in black and with
her high pointed hat. She would wait at the crossroads to guide
the dead to their rest until the time of rebirth. Evil? I don't
believe so, anymore than I believe death is evil. Instead it is
one more symbol that has passed down through the years to spice
October 31st.

Just look around. We are surrounded by symbols of the past that
we take for granted. The brooms the witches rode. The cauldrons
that bubbled with potions vile. Even trick or treating could be
traced back to Celts who went house to house collecting treats of
apples.

It has been truly said that there is nothing new under the sun.
However, this doesn't have to hinder our enjoyment. On Halloween
night, you can find me walking the night. Without fear, I will
travel, listening to the laughter of the children, as I go back
to another time and place.

21 Rules of Halloween

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:07 pm (PDT)

The 21 Rules Of Halloween!

1. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER check to
see if it's really dead.

2. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even as a joke.

3. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.

4. If your children speak to you in Latin or any other language
which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you
a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take
several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to
kids who speak with somebody else's voice.

5. When you have the benefit of numbers, NEVER pair off and go
alone.

6. As a general rule, don't solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

7. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would
apply to any other house of the dead as well.

8. If you're searching for something which caused a loud noise and
find out that it's just the cat, GET THE HELL OUT!

9. If appliances start operating by themselves, do not check for
short circuits; just get out.

10. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead.

11. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good
reason for it. Don't stop and look around.

12. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure
you know what you're doing.

13. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down
at east twice, more if you are female. Also note that, despite the
fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along,
it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

14. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic
behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes,
increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately.

15. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are
listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you're in
trouble if you recognize this one), anywhere in Texas where
chainsaws are sold, the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in
Maine. And definitely stay away from open fields.

16. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go
to he nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help. If you think
that it is strange you ran out of gas because you thought you had
most of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway,
and most likely be eaten.

17. Beware of strangers bearing tools. For example: chainsaws,
staple guns, hedge trimmers, electric carving knives, combines,
lawnmowers, butane torches, soldering irons, band saws, or any
devices made from deceased companions.

18. If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the
time to move in with the in-laws. This also applies to houses that
had previous inhabitants who went mad or committed suicide or died
in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed satanic
practices.

19. Dress appropriately. When investigating a noise downstairs in an
old house, women should not wear a flimsy negligee. And carry a
flashlight, not a candle.

20. Do not mention the names of demons around open flames, as these
can flare suddenly. Be especially careful of fireplaces in this
regard.

21. Do not go looking for Witches in the Maryland countryside.

HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

The 'Dead Time'

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:08 pm (PDT)

The Dead Time

Many Witches call the time between November 1 and December 21
the "dead time" because the Sun is swiftly and visibly losing its power as the
wheel of the year spins toward the Winter Solstice. It is a time of deep
reflection and of clearing away the old debris from your life. When you clear away
the old, then you begin the journey of creating sacred space.

Witches observe many kinds of sacred space. The world itself is
sacred space. Your house can be sacred space. Most Witches agree that the
most sacred space is their magic circle. There are as many valid methods of
creating or "casting" a circle as there are Witches. I present only one version
that you can use for any magical purpose.

Casting the Circle

Set your tools on a small table or special cloth at the center of the
space that will become your magic circle. Place the four colored candles
at each of the compass points along the perimeter of the circle and light
them, beginning in the east.

Next, bless the bowl of water. Hold the athame or your hands over
the bowl and imagine that you are channeling energy from your body into the
water. You can say words while doing this, like, "blessings be upon this
water."
Bless the salt in a similar manner saying, "Blessings upon this
salt." Use your athame to scoop out three portions of salt into the water. Stir the
two with your fingers, again filling the mixture with your spiritual energy.

Take the salt water to the east of your circle and sprinkle it all
along the perimeter, again going clockwise--east, south, west, north, and
finishing in the east.

Follow the same procedure for blessing the lit red fire candle and
the smoldering incense on your altar. Take each blessed element to the
eastern edge of your circle and consecrate the perimeter going clockwise.

Next, bless yourself with each element. For water and earth, dab the
middle of your brow with the salt and water mixture saying, "I am blessed
with the elements of water and earth." To bless yourself with the candle's
flame, hold it about twelve inches from the center of your brow saying, "I am
blessed with the element of fire." Repeat this with the smoldering incense
saying, "I am blessed with the element of air." Then dab the center of your
brow with your blessing oil saying, "I am consecrated in the names of the
Great Mother and the Horned One."

Next you will invoke the elemental spirits of each quarter of the
circle. To do this, draw the invoking pentagram at each quarter. Create
your own words of potency to punctuate the magical working such as, "I invoke
thee, powers of the east. Be with me now!"

Finally, cast the circle with your athame. Start by standing in the
east. Point the athame (or the fingers of your right hand) toward the
outer edge of the circle and trace the perimeter, walking clockwise. I use the
following magical words:

"I summon the circle, the circle I summon!
Power and peace and protection will come in
And bind to the womb of our spiritual birth,
Through air and fire and water and earth."

Now your circle is cast. Use the sacred space for magical work or
sabbat or esbat celebrations.

When you are finished, close the circle by drawing a banishing
pentagram at each quarter. Then, hold your athame pointed toward the east and
walk the perimeter counterclockwise. Imagine the circle dispersing and say:

"Earth will crumble my circle.
Water will cause it to fall.
Fire will burn what's left in the urn
And the winds will scatter it all."

Chant to Hekate--For Justice

Chant to Hekate--for Justice

The chant below brings swift justice to those who treat you unfairly. Take caution in using it, though, especially if you have also behaved inappropriately. Hekate's justice knows no bounds. She sees to it that all involved get precisely what they deserve.

Hekate, Dark one, hear my plea.
Bring justice now, I ask of Thee!
Right the wrongs that have been done,
Avenge me now, oh Mighty One.
Turn misfortune back to those
Who cause my problems and my woes.
And heap upon them karmic debt
Lest they all too soon forget
Their wrongful actions, words, and deeds
Don't let them get away scot-free.
Bring them forth from where they hide,
Bring swift justice--wield your knife.
Hasten, Dark one; hear my plea--
Do what it is I ask of Thee.

Using a Plastic Cauldron as a Window On the Past

Posted by: "Lady Nightshayde" LadyNightshayde9@aol.com   nightshayde99

Tue Oct 26, 2010 9:09 pm (PDT)

Using A Plastic Cauldron As A Window On The Past

Do those molded plastic cauldrons seem to mock what you feel is the deeper meaning of the Samhain season?

If you feel this way, then it is time to make some changes in your outlook. After all, the whole idea behind making magic is to take that which we do not like and change it into something we do. Though these cauldrons may not be the genuine iron articles from the old country, they still possess
the ancient symbolism of the Goddess' cauldron.

By using these plastic imitations as scrying bowls--to be windows to our past lives--we can transform them from trash to treasure. Not only is their shape and imagery perfect for this task, but the dark interior makes them a natural for scrying into without all the fuss and bother of black paint.

On Samhain Eve, take your cauldron, half filled with water, to a
dark place where you can be alone for about thirty minutes. Light a single candle to see by, and cast a circle of protection around yourself. Sit in front of the cauldron and begin to relax your mind. Place one hand in the water and begin stirring slowly counterclockwise while visualizing the passage of
time beingturned backward. As you stir, you should chant something like:

"As I stir the psychic sea, Visions of the past come to me."

The chanting will not only set the mood for the working you are
about to undertake, but the rhythmic sounds will help lull you into a receptive state of mind. Remove your hand from the water and peer into its depths. Relax your gaze without staring. Try to look through the water rather than merely at it. Visions of a past life should shortly appear to you.

Mental Flexibility Spell

The skill of visualization forms a cornerstone of magic. Many spells
incorporate this practice. Visualization basically means imagining something
intensely
enough in your mind to manifest it into reality in some form. Here is an
exercise to enhance your mental flexibility for future visualization. Start by
sitting or lying still, and visualizing yourself descending a spiral staircase.
Keep your hand on the outer wall as you go. You may find it helpful to imagine
that twelve steps take you all the way around the inner pole, just as twelve
hours complete the circle of a clock face. Most people find it very challenging
to visualize spiraling like this in their mind while their body remains
motionless. If you can't get it right the first time, don't despair. Practice
brings improvement.

Peace in the Home Spell

The home is a place of refuge and safety for most of us, and so we
need to spend time sanctifying the home to maintain its peace and harmony. To
help people relax in your home, place a light blue or white candle near the
entryways. Rub some lavender and sandalwood-scented oil into it to promote
peace and serenity. When you light the candles, say the following prayer:

Lady Hestia, queen of hearth and home,
Keep this space a place apart
Safe from harm, warm to the heart.
Bring grace and joy to all herein.
So mote it be.

If a further boost is needed to promote a serene atmosphere among
family and home, light some cinnamon incense after repeating the blessing.

It is traditional to bake man-shaped breads with the first harvest of grain on
this date. The loaf-man symbolizes the transformation from the Green Man into
John Barleycorn, the harvest sacrifice. Begin with the desire to transform some
part of your life that you're less than happy with. Transform the problem area
into an affirmation, a present-tense, one sentence, positive statement of the
outcome you desire. Now light a new orange candle and gather ingredients to make
your favorite bread recipe. If you've never tried making bread before, you may
wish to buy frozen bread dough from your market. Incorporate ingredients with
magical properties into the bread dough before you shape it. Some suggestions
would be almonds for well-being, allspice for health, anise or apple for love,
vanilla for power, and cinnamon for prosperity. Spend fifteen minutes every
night before sleep saying your affirmation.
