DailyOM - The Paradox of Spirit
Today's DailyOM brought to you by:

January 26, 2012
Language of the Soul
The Paradox of Spirit
The self is not small or big but is both at the same time. Our spirit is like a drop in the ocean of spiritual energy.

Each of us has a spiritual self that animates our bodies and infuses our thoughts and feelings. Our language is limited to the world we know for descriptions of something that perhaps cannot be fully comprehended by the human mind. Therefore, only metaphors approach the expressions that give us a true sense of our spiritual nature. The paradox lies in opposing concepts, all of which are true at the same time. And in harmonizing the opposites, we begin to know the wonders of the spirit.

The self is not small or big but is both at the same time. Our spirit is like a drop in the ocean of spiritual energy. Although our spirit seems like a small, disconnected part of a larger whole, it is still made of the same things and can become part of the vast ocean once again. Our individual spirit seems to inhabit our bodies like a passenger in a vehicle but at the same time is not bound by our bodies. Spirits can reach across the miles to touch the heart of a loved one or expand to become one with the universe. We may feel small and perhaps insignificantly young when we look up at the stars, but we are made of the same basic elements. Perhaps looking at the stars is merely a reflection of what is going on within each atom and cell of our being. We are a universe within a universe. Our spirits are ever renewing, yet ageless and eternal. So the self is not new or old but both at once.

So our spiritual self is not small or big, new or old. We may experience life as good and bad, right and wrong, happy and sad, but this is the experience of the material world of dualities, not the truth of our spritual nature. By going within to touch the eternal and changeless energy at our center, we can go beyond the contrasting metaphors to the experience of oneness. And in that connection we can know big and small, new and old, movement and stillness. By accepting the paradox of spirit, we open ourselves to the fullness of our own being.

Get Ready for Imbolc!

Day 2: Legends and Lore of Imbolc
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
February is a time of festival and celebration in many cultures. Today we'll be talking about some of the deities honored during the season of Imbolc, as well as some customs from around the world.
Imbolc Deities

Although Imbolc is traditionally associated with Brighid, the hearth goddess of Ireland (and we'll be talking more about her tomorrow), there are other gods and goddesses who are represented at this time of year. From the Italian Aradia to Vesta of Rome, this is a time to celebrate deities of home and hearth...Read More

Up Helly Aa

In the Shetland Islands of Scotland, villagers celebrate their heritage, which is a rich mix of Norse influence and traditional Scottish culture. For this annual celebration, there are costumed Viking marauders, lots of drinking, and a flaming longship - and that's just the beginning. Although Up Helly Aa is a relatively new tradition, it's clear that the folks of the Shetlands appreciate their Pagan history...Read More

Februalia

Beginning on January 30, and running until February 2, the ancient Romans celebrated Februalia. This festival was held in honor of a god of both death and purification. It began a month-long period of sacrifice and atonement...Read More

Groundhog Day

Okay, so the groundhog isn't really Pagan at all - after all, groundhogs are native to North America. However, you might be surprised to learn that the custom of watching for the groundhog's shadow actually does have roots in some old Pagan traditions...Read More

Valentine's Day

We all know Valentine was a Christian saint, so does Valentine's Day really have a Pagan connection? Like many other Christian holidays, it's actually rooted in Pagan customs. Learn how Valentine's Day as we know it today evolved from the Romans' naughty "love lottery!"...Read More

Lupercalia

Lupercalia was the Roman tradition that started the whole Valentine's Day custom. This ancient fertility festival was originally held in honor of the god Faun, but later was adapted to celebrate Remus and Romulus, the twin founders of Rome.

Tomorrow: The Goddess Brighid

This Celtic goddess of home and domesticity is the focus for many Pagan celebrations at Imbolc. Tomorrow, we'll talk about the legends of Brighid, and how you can honor her for the Imbolc season.

The "Divine Love Healing Events" with Robert Alvarez, the Psychic Wi

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Jan 26, 2012 8:15 pm (PST)

Good morning, everyone, and a Happy Tuesday and Day of Mars (Day of Taking Decisive Action) to all of you!  How are you?  My name is Robert Alvarez, and I AM a Psychic Witch, Reiki Master and Metaphysical Teacher.  I have the honor and pleasure of leading not one but two "Divine Love Healing Events" next month, and here is some information about that.

The "Divine Love Healing Events" are for anyone who wishes to surrender and release the past emotional hardships that seem to make their way into the present.  This Event is for anyone who wishes to experience more Love, Fulfillment and Joy in his or her already existing relationships, as well as for those who wish to dissolve any energy blockages so that new relationships can manifest.  It is also for anyone who wishes to celebrate his or her existence on the Planet.  Each Event shall include a brief talk, a Guided Meditation and (for the first time ever!) a series of exercises to manifest Divine Love in one's life.

Here are the logistical details on the two "Divine Love Healing Events:"

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2012, 3-6PM--This "Divine Love Healing Event" is being held at the Seasonal Health Wellness Center, located at 117 Washington Street (between First and Second Streets), 2nd Floor in Hoboken, New Jersey  07030.  If you need directions, you can Email info@seasonalhealth.com or you can call 201-857-2562.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2012, 7-10PM--This "Divine Love Healing Event" shall be held at TRS, which is located at 44 East 32nd Street, between Madison and Park Avenues, 11th Floor, New York, NY  10016.  For directions, you can call TRS directly at 212-685-2848.  PLEASE NOTE: After 6PM on weeknights, as well as on weekends, there is an Intercom system in use at TRS.  Simply scroll until you see the call code for TRS, then press the round key on the pad to call to be let into the building.

At both "Divine Love Healing Events" light refreshments shall be served, and all participants shall receive printed materials and what I love to call Goddess-Graced Gratitude Gifts.  Also, both Events have a fee of $30.00, per person, cash only.

However, if one registers for both, in advance, then the fee is only $45.00, which is a savings of $15.00, but you must pay in advance to take advantage of this offer.  This offer expires on Thursday, February 16, 2012, and this is the only time I shall offer this Divine Discount.  Incidentally, for those of you that are unable to participate in person, Energetic/Remote participation is available.

If you have any questions regarding the "Divine Love Healing Events," please do not hesitate to contact me.  In the meantime, may Divine Love Transfigure, Transform and Beautifully Bless all of you and yours.

Enchanted Empress Blessings, Robert Alvarez, the Psychic Witch, and the Empowered, Wild and Free Afro-Cuban Gay Man.

Goddess of The Day:  CERES Roman Planting Festival (Rome)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Jan 26, 2012 8:21 pm (PST)

Goddess of The Day: CERES
Roman Planting Festival (Rome)

Themes: Fertility; Earth; Harvest; Growth
Symbols: Grains (especially corn); Poppies; Bread

About Ceres: Ceres, the Roman Goddess of corn, returns our attention to the land today to begin preparing for spring's
crop plantings. At the same time, Ceres reminds us to plant some figurative seeds of character now so they will mature
throughout the year. Cere's name translates as "create." Ceres is truly the creator and mistress of our morning feast
table, having lent her name to modern breakfast cereals, which shows her affiliation with essential food crops.

To Do Today: For growing energy and earth awareness, eat any grain-based food today. Ideal choices include,
corn bread, corn flakes, puffed wheat, buttered corn, or corn chowder.

If you're a gardener, or even if you just enjoy a few houseplants, today is the perfect time to tend to the soil.
The Romans took time out from their other duties and spent an entire week around this date blessing the land.
They invoked Ceres as the essential vegetable spirit for aid after the seeds were laid into the ground.

While we may not be able to spend all week long doing likewise, a few minutes of caring for the earth is well worth
the time. Put any seeds you plan to plant on an altar or in another visual spot. Visualize a yellow-golden light filling
and fertilizing them. Leave them here to absorb Ceres's energy until your traditional planting season begins.  )0(

Homeric Hymn to Demeter

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Jan 26, 2012 8:23 pm (PST)

Wherever the Goddess was, beauty was.
Beauty flowed from her like water,
like the light blue gown she wore, the gown
that carried the sweet smell of her presence
that hung as heavy as incense in the air.
Beauty flowed from her, like her thick gold hair
that spread out over her broad shoulders,
beauty flowed out from her like light,
radiating the brightness of lightning,
beauty blazing through the world,
wherever the goddess was.
~Homeric Hymn to Demeter

The
beauty of the goddess is legendary. Songs, poems and prayers all praise
her beauty. But hers is different than what we call beauty today. It
more resembles what could be called radiance - a glowing sense of self, a
shining smile, bright eyes, a honey-warm voice. These are the beauties
of the Goddess.

Today we
measure and weigh beauty as though it can be found in numbers. But no
ruler and no scale can measure the intesity of love, nor joy's delight.
We do not need to know how old the goddess is, how tall, how light or
heavy. We cannot trap the goddess in such ways. If we were to specify
the perfection, the exact type of beauty, that we sought from her, we
would limit her to our merely human imaginings. Her beauty is more, much
more, than the merely physical. It is the transcendent power of love,
which in its radiance transforms even the most ordinary features.
