"Wicker Man" Companion Out This Weekend in USA

The Pagan-anticipated "Re-imagining" of the early '70s cult-film classic The Wicker Man- called The Wicker Tree- was released this weekend, to very limited shows in New York and Los Angeles, and apparently not shown to critics ahead of time, as the NY Times review did not appear until today (Sat., Jan. 28, 2012, p. C6). The NYC Pagan Gay Guy Posse is meeting up to roll as one, to check this new "Pagan" flick tomorrow, with a Juggler-review to follow. Stay tuned, Pagan Fans.

I believe all religions have a place. I think we should all respect each others choice and leave it at that everyones different therefore not one thing will fit everyone! There is one fault this belief we are human. Sadly some humans cannot stand you likening something different to them

Child sacrificed for harvest

Reports of stuff like this make me want to burn the perpetrators at the stake!

Oh, hang on...

CB
----
Quoted:

"Police in India say they have arrested two people who are suspected of sacrificing a child.

It's believed the girl was murdered and her liver was offered to gods to improve crop growth.

Police chief Narayan Das told AFP: "A seven-year-old girl was sacrificed by two persons superstitiously believing that the act would give a better harvest."

Lalita Tati's body was found in October one week after her family reported her missing.

The girl was from the jungle district of Chhattisgarh, an area dominated by rebel Maoists.

Human sacrifices occasionally occur in poor areas where local people revere black magic superstitions. Victims are often killed by witchdoctors to appease spirits or deities.

There were two child sacrifices reported in the same area in 2010.
Police say they are looking for others who may be involved in the killing of the girl."

Just a quick note of caution.

Having had dealings with this mob many years back I'd be very wary! If they shake your hand .. count your fingers. Their reporter did a piece on us.. and because of the conditions I placed on the process, the article was certainly fair.. but some material, lent to their representative to assist in research, was never returned.

Hence Caveat emptor!! good folks.

Bill.

As a parent - as someone who knows just how challenging it can be to raise healthy, grounded kids, whilst also maintaining a loving relationship with one's partner, and employment to boot - I would strongly advise that any parent considering doing this, should definitely think again.

These sort of lifestyle programs deliberately set out to enthrall audiences.  And they do this by shocking them, by exacerbating conflicts between the people they are filming, and by creating melodramas where there aren't any, etc

We live in a crazy culture (this culture of industrial civilisation) where kids are unable to play safely outdoors for any length of time, where people often spend large parts of their day working in jobs that they aren't passionate about, where children are raised in 'nuclear families' rather than by whole communities.  In this culture, parenting can be very challenging and even the best of us, sometimes make mistakes.

Of course, mistakes are gateways to growth and transformation - we just have to choose to do the work to open them.  Unfortunately, however, reality TV programs don't reflect such natural processes within family life.  Instead, programs like these, which are based on the premise of making generalisations about families because of their religious or culture backgrounds, often making broad statements about these families' ways of being that can 'trap them' in that point of time, for all the world to see.

Personally, I would think that it would be ABSOLUTELY MAD to subject one's family to such public exposure and scrutiny.  I also cannot see how this sort of program would be of any benefit to the Pagan community as a whole.

In my personal life, I am very open about my Paganism, and generally receive a positive response from the people in my community who know me.   I would like to think that we can all be good 'ambassadors' for Paganism, within our own community circles of employment, school, etc.  In building of relationships, in making positive contributions in our local communities, and by having the courage to be open about our religion/spirituality, we can all represent Paganism in a positive way.

Subject: [WitchesWorkshop] National Geographic are looking for a family of witches

National Geographic are looking for a family of witches to film their lifestyle in a new production.

Some of you may have seen this post before, but Sarah from the production team has had little luck in finding her "family of witches". Below is her recent email to me and further down are some facts I point to her about the risks of filming a family and possible reasons why she has had little response!

Nat Geo are currently researching content here at the network. We are
exploring the topic of 'unusual' parenting an are looking for a couple
either heterosexual or same sex that are both practicing witches and are
raising their child within this particular belief system.

Our show, Taboo is the highest rated show at Nat Geo and part of the success
is the observational documentary style of filming.

Do you know any characters that might be interested in being part of the
show?

It would be great if you could get in touch with me.

Here's the reply I sent to Sarah...

Hi Sarah,
I did forward your information on to a variety of people, but I think main issue is a couple of things.

The first is obvious, people must be willing to expose their belief and practices publicly. While other religions may not have a problem with this, Witches are very fearful of retaliation from others who do not share their views. The impact for any children at school is obvious, not to mention the parents concern that such exposure may threaten their employment.

The other issue is the requirement to have both parents as practicing Witches. While it's not uncommon to find couples who practice Witchcraft/Wicca, it is equally not uncommon to find pagan couples who have different traditions. Eg, a witch and a druid, or a witch and an agnostic.

I'll forward the request more widely via our online communities and again ask that people get in touch with you directly.

vinum sabbati,
Tim "ozpagan" Hartridge
