Re: 2012: Have Yahoo Pagan Groups painted themselves into a corner?

Hi Tim, all,

It would be sad if Yahoo Groups ceased to exist - for me, the sadness would
be part sentimental, and part keeping in touch via email being more work
safe compared to other methods of snooping on the latest online happenings
(my workplace blocks Facebook, for example) - but at the end of the day we
(communities, groups, online friends) will always find a way to
communicate. Like everything, nothing ever stays the same on the internet.
I wonder, what will be the new thing when Facebook is old and dying....?
*grin*

Hi Tim & all

Just catching up on the recent discussions here after being away... I think that Facebook as an online social medium is fantastic... BUT... I have to say that I don't trust it when it comes to privacy. I can't justify this and perhaps I just don't know enough about the setting up of FB accounts, but I definitely have a greater feeling of privacy for serious discussions in a restricted membership Yahoo Group than I would with a similar setup on FB.

Cheers & BB, Graham.

Greetings Tim, All,

> So the ugly question that raises it's thorny-head in my mind is, "What if Yahoo Groups just simply went away?" The users of Geocities know what I am talking about.

Oh hell yes I hear you on that ... one day cool and the next a memory!

I think that if it should happen that Yahoo truly across the board outlives it's day it will either die or change into something else. Naturally in some ways that will be sad but I do think that any forum really is only as good as the people in it.

When there is intelligent and thought provoking investigation and debate anything is possible and the outcomes of such touch us all and we take what we each need. If the forums in which such occur go the way of geocities - *shrugs* I rather think we will just find a new beast to ride. I actually have a fair bit of faith that those of that sort of inkling in here will of course already be looking and evaluating new nest and means. As it is not really my field I have to trust the judgement of those better versed ... *Shrugs*

Greetings Gavin,

> The key phrase here is "allowed to continue".

Actually my focus was more upon the "without being seriously questioned" but one without the other does seem lopsided.

> First, the court of peer opinion, on forums like these. People can decide for themselves how effective that has been in moderating behaviour and ensuring that those who receive media attention are qualified to do the role credit.

Yes indeed and given it does just keep happening I'd tend to argue it doesn't have much effect. In fairness though I do also tend to feel that is due to the fact that those concerned often give as much thought to opine as they do to their own deeply held actions! lol

> Second, intra-traditional accountability, respect for lineage etc. I can't comment about the effectiveness of this (I suspect we'd only hear about the failures, not the successes) except to say that this is irrelevant to the eclectics and solitaries that appear to make up the majority of the current pagan movement.

In my experience it certainly does tend to work that way and as far as many outside established lines tend to view those same lines the way they do I imagine it will not change much. It is in fact something that gets quite a bit of thought within several lines of my knowlege believe it or not.

> Third, peer review and standing among pagan academics. As there are genuine consequences for pagan academics who behave in such a way as to damage their credibility, I'd give this one a tick.

That is fair comment and I for one only wish it went a tad further towards spreading from academics to those doing teh do. A part of that naturally is of course trying to dissuade the media from choosing those best suited to the headline - which of course is teh stumbling block I have yet to see any way around. *Shrugs*

> I haven't mentioned organisational accountability (i.e. my accountability to the PAN committee.) It exists, but is relevant only in so far as the organisation in question is worth a damn.

Indeed and so far as the wider people(s) consider it useful - always the devil's fork in the behind of any organisation really! lol

> And of course, any push to create other, stronger, mechanisms of accountability for the pagan community as a whole would be protested ferociously on forums like this one - including, I dare say, by your good self.

Indeed it would only you seem to have missed my push entirely - in that area I argue for greater and stronger means - not less.

> Which puts us back where we started, I'd say.

Misunderstandings tend to do that I find. Close attention is always such a useful tool - but it always only seems to go a part of the way! *G*

Re in a quandary re Institute of the 7 rays

Hi guys

I'm not impressed how my husband got sucked into paying $50 for a pyscho-analysis from the following website:

http://www.sevenray.net/

I could've given him this analysis free of charge after being with him for almost 20 years *grin*

Does anyone know about this organisation? Please enlighten me.

Thank you.

Blessed Be

Vera
