Cretan Goddess: ATANA POTNIA

ATANA POTNIA

Mistress of the labyrinth

Whose winding pathways

Are sinuous, like the snakes

You hold in your hands

The chief deity of ancient Crete was a goddess who ruled supreme. Her
name seems to have been Potnia, which means "lady" or "mistress".
Sometimes the name is qualified as Potnia of Grain, Potnia of Horses, or
Potnia of the Labyrinth, but these names all refer to a single goddess
with many attributes, including bees, lions, doves, double axes, and
griffins. Atana potnia means 'Immortal Mistress' and the name is usually
applied to her snake goddess aspect.

In 1903 Sir Arthur Evans [1851-1941], an English archaeologist,
unearthed a faience figure in his excavations at Knossos on Crete.[1] He
identified it as a snake goddess, and it was only part of a cache of
objects unearthed at the same spot, including a figure he called 'the
votary'. Evans believed that most of the objects formed part of a cult
shrine, hidden when the palace was destroyed [by an earthquake he
thought] circa 1600 BCE.

The figure shows a bare breasted woman holding two snakes. Her skirt,
the colour of menstrual blood, has seven overlapping flounces. The skirt
flares out from a tight girdle. Over the hips and waist is a kind of
apron inscribed with a net pattern. Her head-dress is surmounted by a
domestic spotted cat.

Several figurines of the snake goddess were found in domestic houses and
small shrines suggesting that she was a protective household deity.
Both snakes and cats are known to kill vermin, and both were domestic
pets in previous ages. In some societies the snake is seen as the
guardian spirit of the home, and encouraged accordingly. The snake is a
symbol of moving energy, waves, steams and spirals. Because it sheds its
skin and emerges renewed, the snake is as a symbol of life, death and
rebirth into a new consciousness. This motif is sometimes related to the
menstrual cycle of women, with the monthly shedding of blood and
sloughing of uterine tissue, after which the womb is renewed and made
receptive once more. The emblem of opposing snakes symbolises emergence
and becoming.

The so-called 'Palace' of Knossos is a mysterious labyrinth of rooms,
corridors and chambers. Evans thought that it was the home of the king,
but others have suggested that it may have been a temple, initiation
ground, or even a necropolis. The Minotaur that later mythographers
claimed lived at its heart may have been abstracted from the bull
symbolism that is found everywhere about the palace, from horned altars
of dedication, to frescoes of that show young men and women engaged in
the dangerous sport of bull leaping. This seems to have involved
vaulting over the horns of bulls with the aim of landing on their feet.
In the Labyrinth, the goddess was called Laburinthos Potnia or 'Lady of
the Labyrinth'.

Minoan society seems to have been matrifocal, if not matrilineal. Women
played a major part in every aspect of society and a dominant role in
Minoan religion. It has been suggested that Crete was Homer's Island of
the Phaiakans on which Odysseus was shipwrecked and where he had to
petition Queen Arete, rather than the king, for permission to marry. The
name Crete is derived from the Greek word crateia, which means 'ruling
goddess'.

After the invasions of the patriarchal Indo-Europeans, the place of
Potnia disappeared. Her role and her divine attributes were probably
spread out between many goddesses, [2] possibly including Artemis,
Athena, Rhea and Hera.

Atana Potnia is primarily a goddess of protection, appealed to defend
the home, and to preserve those who are going through life changing
experiences. Atana Potnia is the goddess of the labyrinth, which
symbolises the life journey, each person walking along its winding
paths, but always travelling inwards towards the centre, where death and
rebirth takes place in the fullness of time. Atana Potnia is the
protector of all those who tread the labyrinth, and knows all its twists
and turns. She offers protection during the transition stages of life,
such as birth, the onset of menstruation, marriage, menopause, divorce
and death.

Opal

By Pari

Opal, a Water and Fire stone and the birthstone for October, can be
quite a useful and valuable tool to use at Samhain, not to mention
throughout the long winter months. It is a stone of "happy dreams and
changes", a stone of communion, revelation and vision, and a bringer of
love and understanding. And so, as we move solidly into the realm of
Autumn and prepare for all the changes that Winter brings (just as those
in the Southern Hemisphere are welcoming the change to Spring and
looking forward to Summer), and as we seek to reunite with the Old Ones
and family and friends beyond, let Opal be our guide!

A very interestingly structured stone, Opal is actually a hydrated
Quartz containing minute spheres of silica and oxygen bonded by up to
10% water within its form. For this reason, Opal is considered a
mineraloid and not truly crystalline. But a precious stone it is! In
fact, the name Opal derives from the Greek "opalios" meaning "all-seeing
gem" and earlier from the Sanskrit word "upala" meaning "precious
stone". This beautiful but sometimes brittle gemstone has been well
sought after for centuries, especially what they call the Precious White
or Black varieties. Unlike Common Opal whose tiny internal spheres are
unorganized, the Precious varieties contain fiery flashes of color due
to various wavelengths of diffracted light emanating from their own
internal spheres which are stacked and uniform! These flashes are
called "fire" and appear in bright confetti-like hues of blue, red,
pink, yellow, orange, green and purple in varying combinations. The
Ancients, though, believed that Precious Opal came into its true being
when the Storm God, jealous of the beauty of the Rainbow God, shattered
the rainbow to bits which then fell to the earth and were captured
within the Opals.

Perhaps because of its association with the beauteous Rainbow God,
Precious Opal is believed to give its wearer an incredible charisma and
charm. It is said to increase and enhance our personal power and
self-esteem and help us to take assertive action whenever needed. All
Opal can alleviate shyness, timidity and dispel lackadaisical attitudes,
creating a joyful atmosphere during exploration and acknowledgement of
the Higher Self and other realms.

These silky and milky translucent opalescent stones were revered by
ancient Romans who mined them in the area of what is now the Czech
Republic. The early Aztecs mined the Mexican lands as did the Spanish
Conquistadors who brought Opal back to Europe with them. Today, 90% of
Opals come from Australia (the most beautiful fiery black variety found
in New South Wales, and other precious varieties hailing from South
Australia and Queensland), with other significant sources being the
United States, Mexico, Honduras, Peru and Chile. Opal deposits occur in
masses, veins, nodules, stalactites, and at times within petrified
wood. Its environment is either volcanic, deposited from hot springs,
or in sediments.

Aside from the Precious Opals of either black or white, there are many
other colors and kinds of Opal, including the more common Pink Opal,
Blue Opal, White Opal (containing no fire), and Brown, Black or Clear
Opal. There is also an orange variety called Fire Opal, clear Oregon
Opal and Water Opal, Andean Opal with a pattern of swirling colors,
brown Boulder Opal with or without fire, Cherry Opal, and a "jelly" type
Opal exhibiting a gelatinous blue color. There are many synthetic
Opals on the market, so care should be taken when opting to buy the real
thing.

Magically, Black Opals open up our Third Eye, allowing for our own
flashes of clear insight and revelation to spring forth. It can help us
peer into the true heart of another. Just as the Australian Aborigines
and Native American shamans used Opal to invoke visions during
Dreamtime ceremonies and vision quests respectively, so too can we use
this powerful stone during Astral travel, for accessing vital past-life
information, meditation, trance work or divination. Metaphysically,
Black Opals encourage a stronger connection to the spirit world, helping
us to more fully experience the Divine and bringing us to a welcomed
state of high spirituality. Often used in Tantric sex, this Opal helps
one achieve a divine and extremely connected sexual experience - one
that takes us beyond the ego so that we can more fully merge with the
cosmos. Opals, of any kind, activate matters of the heart by promoting
love, loyalty, attraction and the fiery passion that comes when those
three traits are combined. It can be quite an exciting and explosive
stone!

Precious White Opal does much the same as the Black, but is known to
help diminish any anger, fear or negative emotions. It helps us release
old patterns that no longer serve us, and then sweetly pushes us along
to welcome in the new and improved path or relationship it has attracted
to us. In ancient France, it was believed that Opals could make one
"invisible" and thus help one steal - a quality that most likely played a
part in giving Opals a bad reputation back then for being "unlucky".
But this characteristic of "invisibility" - what I call donning an
"invisibility cloak" - can be used for much better purposes. It can
allow us to more stealthily move through situations or times when we
wish not to be noticed, and it can also allow us to move more readily
between realms.

Additional properties of various other types of Opal are:

~ Common White Opal brings productivity and helps us to get things
accomplished efficiently. It calms and soothes the emotions.

~ Pink Opal heals emotional trauma and allows love to flourish once again.

~ Boulder Opal helps us wade through any "muddy" areas of our lives.

~ Boulder Matrix Fire Opal, so named because it is found within the
fissures of massive boulders and contains brilliant flashes of light
refracted colors of the highest intensity of all the Opals, is noted for
helping us know what we truly desire and, in turn, bestows us with a
greater creativity, inspiration and intuition on how to go about
attaining it.

Pink Opal - Boulder Opal - Fire Opal

~ Orange Fire Opal enhances sexuality and heightens passion.

~ Blue Opal gives us the courage to voice what we desire.

~ Gray or clear Opal helps bring about the "invisibility" factor.

~ Jelly Opal releases our resistance to going with the flow.

Blue Opal - Gray Opal - Jelly Opal

Physically, all Opals help stimulate circulation and purify the blood,
help clear and strengthen eyesight, keep kidneys healthy, and help break
up infections in the body and move them more quickly through the
system.

Opal is associated with the astrological sign of Libra, but also with
Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio. It is medium hard as stones go, registering
between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs Scale, and is best cleansed under
softly running water or under the light of the Moon. It is important to
keep Opals out of sunlight where their water content can dry out and
cause cracking or loss of iridescence. In the Northern Hemisphere where
sunlight has now waned, it is time to work with Opal!

As brightly colored Autumn leaves herald change, so do the flashes of
color in this precious opalescent and iridescent gemstone. And as those
sudden colors are revealed within the cloudy matrix of Opal, the veil
is pierced. With the veil thinnest now...

...a blessed Samhain and a happy reunion to all!

With Opal fire to shine the way, we sing a joyous tune,

As we dance with those who've gone before, under the opalescent Moon.

You do not have to have money to attract money, but
you cannot feel poor and attract money. The key is, you
have to find ways of improving the way you feel from right where you stand
before things can begin to change: By softening your attention to the
things that are going wrong, and by beginning to tell stories that lean
more in the direction of what you want instead of in the
direction of what you have got, your vibration will shift; your point of
attraction will shiftâ€"and you will get different results.

Be an
Angel Today

Today,
be
an angel in someone else’s life.  This can be the simplest thing, the smallest
gesture, to a friend but also to a stranger.

Today, as you go through
your life, look around and see if there is some small thing you might do for
someone else, some gift you can give them.  Look for the opportunity to say
something nice, to listen attentively, to make a loving gesture.  Look for ways
to brighten a life.  Look for ways to ease a heavy burden.

Spend the day continuously
making the world a better place and you will find your own burdens will lift
immeasurably.  The smiles of gratitude, the look of surprise from a grateful
stranger, these things will lift you up and out of your own concerns.

Realize your power to bring
joy and gladness to others.  Realize the power of a simple act of love and
compassion.  Be an angel.

A Yule Story for Children of All Ages ~ The Tiniest Fairy ~ By Author: Lady Abigail *
I wrote this story for my grand daughter and it has turned out to be
one of my most requested and favorited stories of Yule. I hope you will
all enjoy it and share it with all the magickal children in your live.
Blessed be,Lady Abigail In a time
before time had been named, when life danced as a dazzling rainbow upon
the mystical Earth, magick lived inside each earthen creature. Some, the
big ones, were having a harder time seeing the magick now, than in the
past. They were starting to forget that magick is all around you, if
only you believed. Alicia was a small and tiny earthen
spirit with sparkling blue eyes and a pinched up nose; even in the fairy
world, where all things are small, she was the smallest of them all. Her
home was deep inside the strong and twisting roots of a big Oak. It was
safe and none of the winter cold snows could find their way a in. She
loved playing around her cozy and warm home with her mom and dad. They
would play hide and seek and she could easily hide in the corners or
under the furniture. They would read books by the fire light and sing
songs that only the fairies knew. Alicia was frightened of
the other earthen creatures, as well as of what might be outside her
cozy home under the big Oak. She had never been out before and saw no
reason to go into the “outside.” When company came over
Alicia would not come out of her tiny seed pod bed. When the Bunny
family who lived next door came to visit, she was frightened that being
so small, one of the many bunny babies might accidentally hop on her.
She would only peek over the beds edge with her tiny pinched nose when
the Gloends, a family of glowworms; came to visit, because she wanted to
see where the warm yellow glow was coming from. At dinner
one evening, Alicia’s mom and dad told her that soon winter's hold
would be ending. That frightened Alicia since she only knew the winter
and could not imagine what might happen if it was to end. They
explained to her that in all the magickal world, it was her magick that
would call in the changing of seasons and the turning of the great
wheel. On the eve of the next night Alicia, her mom and her dad would go
on a journey into the forest. Here, there would be a great gathering
and all the mystical creatures of Earth would see her gift of magick. But
Alicia shivered with fear -- what was this wheel and how can she stop
this magick and changing? She liked things just as they were and didn’t
want anything to change at all. She didn’t want to go to a gathering
where so many would be. She didn’t know what this gift was that she was
to give. What if she got lost and no one could find her? Or maybe the
others would see her. Maybe they would not like her or make fun of her
or laugh at her being so small. Her greatest fear was that
maybe she had no magick. She had not seen it. She couldn’t fly like her
mom and dad, she kept falling on her elbows. She couldn’t make things
like flowers or snowflakes like her mom and dad; all she ended up with
some ice that melted. She couldn’t even make light with her wand. How
would her parents feel when they found out, what would she do? Even
as frightened as Alicia was of going into the “outside, ” she was more
frightened of what others might think of her. She didn’t want to
disappoint her mom and dad, so she decided it would be best if she hid.
She would go into the “outside;” no one would look for her there. She
would not go very far. Just far enough away where she could hide until
the gathering was over, and then the change would not happen. Alicia’s
mom was roasting acorns for the great gathering’s feast and her dad was
busy polishing up his ice wand. Alicia knew no one would see her leave,
or think she would go into the “outside” alone, since she never had
before. With her wand in a small bag tied to her waist,
Alicia carefully opened the door of her house and stepped into the
“outside.” She closed the door quickly and quietly so her mom and dad
would not hear it creak. Then, she turned to see what was here in this
“outdoors.” It was white everywhere. She walked along for a little while
when all of a sudden “crunch” she sunk into the snow up to her wing
tips. It took a bit of work but she wriggled her way up and out of the
snow. Now she was really cold and she could see it was getting darker.
The bright bluish color of the sky was now turning a purple hue with
streaks of red and yellow. She wasn’t sure, but if night
was coming she had to hide quickly. If she could fly just to the edge of
the forest she would find a place to stay until the gathering was over
and then she could go home again. Then it would be safe because nothing
would change. That is what she wanted. Alicia was frighten
and getting colder, but she had made up her mind. She had to do this,
or everything she knew was going to change forever. She shook herself
off and looked toward the forest edge. With all her will and might she
jumped up and began flying forward. Then back a little, then up, then
down, then around in some circles and then slower and then faster and
then it happened. Bang! She flew right into a tree branch hanging low
weighted heavy by the snow. Alicia did not know what
exactly had happened as she rubbed her head, but when she rose up again
out of the snow it had gotten very dark. She could see tiny lights
twinkling above her now. She looked around trying to figure out what
direction to go. By now the gathering must be over and she could go
home. Everything would stay the same. But which way was home? Alicia
couldn’t see where to go, so she didn’t want to try to fly. What if she
hit another tree, it was dark now and she couldn’t make anything out,
plus her head still hurt from before. She had to be very careful
deciding what way to go now. All of a sudden, she heard
someone calling her. “Alicia, Alicia.” She felt her body begin to shake
so hard that the tiny ice cycles that had formed on the tips of her
wings, tinkled like little bells. As she turned around to look behind
her, she saw a woman lying on a big pile of fur blankets. She was not a
fairy, but she was beautiful, dressed in a green, red and white gown.
Hundreds of earthen creatures stood all around her, many Alicia had
never seen before, but none were scared or frightened at all. Although
Alicia didn’t understand it, she wasn’t frightened either. There
seemed to peace about this woman, it was something calming. “Alicia, I
have been waiting for you. I need your help.” the Lady said. “Waiting
for me?” Alicia asked. “Yes, Alicia, ” she said. “Its dark now and we
need your light to light the way, so that we can see what lies before
us.” “My light?” Alicia asked, remembering she had not been able to make
her wand light before. “It’s your magick Alicia, your magick that will
call the light from within me.” the Lady said.Alicia slowly began to
walk toward the woman. That’s when she saw that this quiet lady was
going to have a baby, and she was going to have it any moment. All
the fears and worries Alicia carried with her were beginning to melt
away, just like the ice on her wing tips. As she looked into the meadow
green eyes of this lady she wanted more than anything else in her small
life to make a light for her. Alicia, still trembling,
took her wand from its little bag, and raised it up. With every magickal
hope she had ever had, she put her energy into lighting her wand. The
lady smiled gently at her and in that instance there was a great flash
of light which came from the tip of that tiny wand. It was a brilliant
luminous light which filled every corner of the night. As
Alicia held her wand high she looked over to see that now the lady was
holding in her arms a baby; a wonderful little baby boy. Suddenly, she
understood it all, everything her mom and dad had been telling her. This
was the magick, this was her special gift. Alicia, the tiniest of all
fairies, she was the one who carried the spark, the spark which released
the light of the world and the turning of the wheel of life. In
her tiny being she had carried that magick, the magick to unlock the
power of love and understanding for the world to share. Standing in that
brilliant light, Alicia understood who the Lady was and the importance
of this baby. She was a part of the rebirth of the Light. This baby was
the Light again reborn of the Goddess. The beautiful Lady was the
Goddess of life, and Alicia was that spark of magick which survives all
time and through which we find boundless possibilities. Soon
the edge of the forest was filled with earthen creatures and spirits
from all over the mystical world. Alicia’s mom and dad watched their
fairy child as she beamed with joy. The Lady holding her baby boy,
blessed all those who shared in this time of magick as the feast was
served and great happiness was shared by all. Alicia
didn’t even notice that she was floating on the air. She was no longer
weighted down by all her silly worries or fears. She knew that even
though she was tiny she had the power to light the world. Now she
understood, magick is all around you if you only believe, and trust in
yourself. So each year as you light a candle to call the
light, remember the tiniest fairy, for it only takes one tiny spark to
give light unto the whole world. Blessed be our Lady the Mother of Light. Lady AbigailHigh Priestess Ravensgrove CovenCopyright © 11012005

millions of children with a Castalia rich imagination and well-beloved cartoon characters. To remember
this man and uplift Castalia's childlike ability to awaken the artist within, watch a favorite Walt Disney film
today, reveling in the wonder of it. Then get out and do something creative! Try drawing your own magickal
cartoon (this is just for you and the goddess, so don't worry about a lack of skill - the keynote today is having
fun with your fancy).

To quaff this Goddess's inspiration for any task you're undertaking, find a water fountain and drink fully of it.
Visualize the water filled with a color of light that, to you, represents creativity. Also fill a small container
with a secure top with some of this water and keep it with you. Carry Castalia's power into the situation in
which you need inspiration. Pour a little out before your meeting, artistic effort, or speech to release her power.
Or sip a bit of it to wet your whistle and renew the magick.

Centering Spell

Centering Spell

Before the holiday crush, center yourself with this simple and powerful spell. Find a quiet space and gather a white or silver candle, a glass bowl of spring water, a smooth stone, and a spoonful of salt. Light the candle, and concentrate on the flame. Hold the stone in your palm. Feel its weight, and its solidity. This stone represents your core truthâ€"the unchangeable, timeless, and solid aspect of your core being. Identify this aspect and name it. Place the stone into the water. Breathe. Hold the salt in your hand, and let it slip through your fingers into the water, saying:

This life and time,
ever changing.
Goddess, may I recognize my truth
and center my life on it.
As time changes me,
may I remain timeless,
fluid, and honorable.

DailyOM: Learning to Trust Divine Guidance

Learning to Trust Divine Guidance
Trial and Error

Anyone who has asked for divine guidance knows that it can be challenging to trust it when it comes. This is because divine guidance comes in many forms and it is sometimes hard to locate it. We aren't sure if we are meant to trust our thoughts, our feelings, our dreams, or our intuitions to be the carriers of divine wisdom. We are not sure if advice from a friend is the form in which the guidance has come into the world, or if our own opinion is the source of wisdom we need to take seriously. The ability to sort all this out comes with trial and error, and the best way to learn to recognize divine guidance is to engage in the process of asking and receiving.

Sometimes when we ask for guidance, we already have a sense of what we want to hear. At such times, receiving guidance can be difficult, because we don't want to hear anything that appears to be in opposition to our desire. Therefore, one of the most important qualities we need to cultivate if we are to receive guidance is an open mind. It helps to acknowledge what we want, and then to symbolically set it aside, making room for whatever wisdom comes through to us.

Cultivating an active relationship with the divine is the essential ingredient to being able to receive and trust guidance when it comes our way. We can make a daily practice of this by using a set of runes, a deck of cards, or a pendulum. We can also use our journals, developing a relationship with the divine through the written word. As we request and receive guidance, we might take notes on our experiences. Over time we will begin to recognize when we were able to hear correctly and when we were not. In this way, we will gradually attune ourselves to our particular relationship with the divine. Begin to trust the guidance you are receiving and soon you will find it flowing with ease.

"Fortune, good night; smile once more, turn thy Wheel."
Shakespeare

Namaste, everyone!

We hope this email has found you well and in good cheer!

The Wheel of Fortune tarot card (pictured above) serves to remind us of the intrinsic cyclical nature of our world. As the seasons revolve and we once again approach the wondrous Winter Solstice along with the time of holiday rituals & celebration, may we strive to find balance in our lives. May we live with a growing awareness not so much of how our thoughts & actions affect the whole, (some things cannot be totally known), but simply that our thoughts & actions do affect the whole. If we can achieve this state of conscious living, it is likely that when all that goes around comes back around in this circle of life, what willre-turn to us will be met with a more steady sense of peace, joy & a Lightness of heart.
 PEACEFUL PATHS NEWS!

PEACEFUL PATHS WHEEL OF FORTUNE!!
Speaking of the auspicious Wheel of Fortune, this tarot card also often represents events in our lives that seem to come from nowhere; unexpected, and often delightful, surprises.  At Peaceful Paths, we thought we'd try something a little 'unexpected' that will hopefully delight you!  Rather than our annual one-day-only holiday/anniversary sale, this year as we celebrate the holidays and our seventh year in this glorious old house, we're presenting our own Wheel of Fortune! A wheel full of  gifts....  of savings....  of fun!  For the entire month of December, each time you shop with us, you'll get a chance to spin the wheel to receive a special prize-- anything from a free gift to 25% off anything in the store!
And if the wheel lands on the right spot, your gift may be doubled!
So come!   Take a chance & give the wheel a whirl!

Please join us at any or all of the following:

Each of Jefferson's workshops is a unique learning experience for there is always much more to discover & share about dreams!

Do you have recurring dreams?  Have you ever had a nightmare or a serious dream you did not understand that still haunts you?  Is there a symbol that has appeared in various dreams over and over again?  Do you find that you do not remember your dreams or perhaps you feel that you do not dream at all?

In this interactive workshop, Jefferson Harman will review the various aspects of Lucid Dreaming.  Learn how to change patterns in your subconscious and thus affect your waking life in a positive way.  Learn how to consciously enter your dream state, while being fully aware that you are dreaming.  And once there, you can learn how you can participate in your dreams, including asking questions about your life.  Learn how to solve the riddles hidden in the symbols and messages of your own dreams.

Visit Jefferson's new website:  www.everydaysymbology.com

**Now you can hear Jefferson Harman interpret dreams (and even call in yourself!) on the radio!  Jefferson is now a recurring guest on "Life Unedited" with host John Aberle, on WCHE Radio 1520 AM, in the Philadelphia area.

A SHAMANIC HEALING CIRCLE

(*Sliding Scale Available)

This monthly sacred circle ebbs and flows in accordance to how Spirit calls. Some circles will mirror a traditional drumming circle while others will focus more on personal/global healing. Most every circle will feature at least one journey for personal healing & exploration in a way that weaves with the month's focus. All circles, though they may have varying focuses, will be in alignment with the natural Earth, Moon, and Cosmic cycles. The voices of all participants are heard as we work and play in Oneness.

December Circle Focus:  From Darkness to Light
In this circle, we will work with the energies of the Winter Solstice.  The Winter Solstice is the time of year when we greet the longest night of the year.  After this point, the Sun greets us more and more each day until Summer Solstice.
We will discover what parts of ourselves are ready to emerge from the darkness into the light.  A releasing ceremony will help clear away what has kept this part of ourselves in the dark, and we will birth this new part of us to grow with the Light.

Lithuanian Folksongs

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Dec 5, 2010 9:59 am (PST)

O sun mother, kindly Saule,
where have you been hiding?
Where have you traveled
since you left us here?
I have been across the hills
to take care of the weather
for the shepherds over there.
Remember, I have much to do!
~Lithuanian Folksongs

The sun has not disappeared from our world. As the Baltic peoples knew, when the sky grows dark above us,
the sun is merely busy warming other people in other lands. Summer is not gone from the earth; it is merely
blooming on the other side of the world right now.

In our own lives, too, the sun seems to disappear at times. We have money worries, or we lack love, or we find
work frustrating. It is tempting, at such times, to focus on the negative aspects of our lives. But even when times
are tough, there is positive energy somewhere. Some friend offers a kind word, or we take pleasure in a hobby
or good book, or we accept the gentle ministrations of our pets. Light and darkness dapple our lives at all times.
We can choose only to see darkness, or we can rejoice in the light as well.)0(

Goddess  Of The Day  :  TAKANAKAPSALUK

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Sun Dec 5, 2010 8:31 pm (PST)

Goddess  Of The Day  :  TAKANAKAPSALUK
Kashim (Alaska)
Themes: Providence; Purification; Strength; Thankfulness; Luck; Health
Symbols: Saltwater; Artic Animals

About Takanakapsaluk: This Artic Sea Goddess rules over the successful catching of game and over personal health. Takanakapsaluk lives far beneath the cold waters, where she also recieves the spirits of the dead and cares for them.

To Do Today: Among Inuit hunters, this is the time of year when special rituals propitiate the spirits of Takanakapsaluk's animals, who give themselves for the tribe's food. Specifically the bladders of seals,
whales and polar bears are returned to her icy waters in thankfulness. In a similar spirit, go to any open body of water and toss in a small biodegradable offering to the Goddess in thanks for your food. Consider abstaining from meat today, or from some other beloved food, as a way of showing appreciation for the
Goddess's bounty.

The Kashim traditionally includes ritual fire jumping and sweat baths for purification. Try this yourself by jumping a small candle (carefully, please) or taking a steamy shower (the goddess is part of that water).
Additionally, any show of physical prowess todaybrings continued strength. So, add a little exercise to your day. Take a brisk walk, do some jumping jacks. As you do, think of Takanakapsaluk filling you with revitalizing health.

Make a Witch Ball Spell

Make a Witch Ball Spell

Years ago Witch balls hung in the windows of many homes. These were glass balls similar to the gazing balls you see today in many gardens. The purpose of these balls was to repel the evil eye. Here’s how you can make your own. Purchase clear glass or plastic Christmas ornaments from a craft store, along with bottles of liquid gold and silver metallic craft paints. You can also purchase other colors of paintâ€"it’s up to you. Next, remove the wire loop at the top of the ornament. Squeeze small amounts of the paint on to the ornament, in pleasing combinations of colors. Swirl the ornament around, so the paints blend and coat the interior of the ornament. Leave it to dry overnight. On the next day, replace the wire loops at the top of the ornament and charge it with your magical intent. Hang it with a pretty cord in your window or on a holiday tree. The pattern made by the paints will trap and hold any negative energy. ~James Kambos

Daily Aromatherapy Tip  -  Frankincense Bath Kisses

These lusciously scented "kisses" are a bathtime luxury. Melt one ounce cocoa butter and 2/3 ounce shea butter(available in most health
food stores)in a microwave, then add 1/3 ounce sweet almond oil and 1/8 teaspoon each frankincense and sweet orange essential oils. Pour
into small candy molds and place in the freezer for 20 minutes. Remove from molds. Place one or two 'kisses' into hot bath water.
Store the rest in a ziplock bag in the freezer

Inuit Song

Where is the woman who refused to marry?
Look: she is in a kayak going to sea with a puffin.
Where is the father of the woman who refused to marry?
He is taking her home in a kayak to the mainland.
Now he is taking the woman back home.
Now a storm is rising. Now the wind is rising.
Now the man is pushing the woman into the sea.
Now she is clinging to the boat. Now he is striking her.
With a knife he is cutting her fingers. Seals emerge.
Again he is striking at her arms. Whales emerge.
Now she is sinking, Sedna the beautiful.
Now she is sinking. The tide is taking her.
~Inuit Song

One of the most powerful and violent of the world's goddess myths is the story of Sedna, the great Goddess
of Abundance to the Artic Inuit people and their relatives the Inupiat and Yup'ik. A woman who found no
human man appealing enough to marry, Sedna was finally courted and won by a sea bird. He took her to
an island, where she lived in a huge best and ate fish scraps. After some time, her father came to rescue her,
but the sea rose up against him, for the bird was a prince of the ocean.

The man, realizing he could not win against the elements, pushed his daughter overboard. She clung to
the side of the boat. He pushed her away. She sank beneath the waves. And there, she underwent a
transformation. From her arms, whales emerged; from her fingers, seals. The foodstuff from which her
people would rely came from Sedna's body.

Variants of this myth - in which a primal mother gives up her body in order to feed her people - appear across
the world. However shocking it might seem, it encodes an inescapable truth: we live of the lives of others.
To do so without gratitude is the ultimate insult to our great mother, nature.)0(
