Get Ready for Samhain!: Day 2: The Spirit World

Get Ready for Samhain!

Day 2: The Spirit World
From Patti Wigington, your Guide to Paganism / Wicca
As we learned yesterday, Samhain is a time when the veil between this world and
the next is at its thinnest. This means it's a good time to open up
communication with the spirit world if you'd like to. You can do this in a
couple of different ways, but the most popular involve holding a seance or a
dumb supper. Learn how to do these safely, in a way that shows the spirit world
you respect and honor its inhabitants.

How to Hold a Seance

If you've ever thought about communing with a lost loved one, or a deceased
friend, Samhain is the best time of year to do it. However, before you just go
calling up random spirits, you may want to put some thought and planning into
your seance. Learn about tricks and tips for communing with the spirit world,
and how to make sure your seance goes smoothly for everyone involved, both in
this world and on the other side of the veil! How to Hold a Seance

Host a Dumb Supper

A dumb supper is a ritualized meal in which no one speaks, and the dead are
invited to dine side by side with the living. It's a good way to let those we've
lost know that we still think about them and that they live on in our memories.
Although it is typically a solemn occasion, the dumb supper is often a powerful
emotional experience for those who participate. Host a Dumb Supper

What is a Spirit Guide?

This is a good time of year to talk about spirit guides. Many people believe
they have them, and certainly, at Samhain you're far more likely to encounter
someone from the other side than the rest of the year. However, not everything
that crosses the veil has our best interests at heart. Read on to learn about
different types of spirit guides, and how to tell if they're here to help or
just cause trouble. What is a Spirit Guide?

Guest Author Ray Buckland on Death & Dying

Wiccan author Ray Buckland did a presentation in the town of Lily Dale in Spring
2008 on the topic of death and dying. He has graciously permitted us to share
the text of that presentation here on the Pagan/Wiccan website. On Death and
Dying

Make Your Own Spirit Incense

This loose incense recipe is perfect for workings involving the spirit world. Do
you wish to contact the spirit of a long-dead ancestor? Are you hoping to bring
some visions your way in a dream? Or are you maybe looking to enhance your own
meditative abilities? Try this magical blend at your next seance - you might be
surprised at the things you experience!

Tomorrow: Samhain Magic

Tomorrow, we'll look at some Samhain-themed magic - we'll talk anbout
divination, the use of scrying mirrors, the magical Needfire, and whether or not
you should bother using a Ouija Board!

Prayers to Ganesha

Prayers to Ganesha
October 7
Thursday

Color of the day: Purple
Incense of the day: Jasmine

One of the cornerstone practices of Hinduism is the repetition of mantras,
Sanskrit prayers. It is believed that the consistency of the repetition allows
the true power of the mantra to unfold. Typically a mantra is chanted 108 times
over a forty-day period to allow the magic to manifest in one’s life. It’s
almost like repeating a spell over and over again, allowing its energy to
build.

Start a practice of chanting to Ganesha today. Ganesha is the elephant-headed
god of the Hindu tradition that removes obstacles, grants protection, and
bestows blessings. His mantra is “Om Ganapatayea Namaha.” Om is the vibration
of the universe, containing all potentials and possibilities. Ganapatayea is
another name for Ganesha. Namaha literally means, “I bow to you.” When we chant
this prayer, we surrender to the God and Goddess and allow for the obstacles
blocking our path to be removed.

May your day be blessed.

Today's Goddess:   Bixia Yuanjin Festival of High Places (China)

Posted by: "Cher Chirichello" CHIC0411@YAHOO.COM   chic0411

Thu Oct 7, 2010 8:16 pm (PDT)

Today's Goddess: Bixia Yuanjin
Festival of High Places (China)

Themes: Air; Protection; Luck; Freedom; Birth; Movement
Symbols: Wind; Clouds; Kites; Chrysanthemum Petals

About Bixia Yuanjin: A weather goddess who lives in cloudy high places, Bixia
Yuanjin attends each person's birth to bestow good health and luck upon the
child. She is also a wind deity, helping to liberate and motivate us with
fall's gently nudging winds.

To Do Today: During midautumn, the Chinese take to nearby hills and fly kites
to commemorate a sage, Huan Ching, who saved villagers from disaster by
instructing them to take to high places thereby protecting them from a
mysterious plague. So, consider doing likewise today, even if it means just
climbing a ladder! Move up off the ground, breathe deeply of Bixia Yuanjin's
fresh airs, and discover renewed wellness.

If you feel adventurous, chrysanthemum wine and cakes are traditional feast
fare for longevity and good fortune. An alternative is steeping chrysanthemum
petals in water and then adding the strained water to any soups, juices, or
other water-based foods and beverages for a similar effect.

Should the winds be with you, fly a kite named after a burden and liberate
yourself in the winds. Also, carefully observe the shapes in the clouds
today. If you have a pressing question on your heart, Bixia Yuanjin can answer
it through these, her messengers.

Rhapsody by Ssu-ma Hsiang-ju 179-117 B.C.E.

Look, I see her with my own eyes!
The Queen Mother of the West.
Look! I see her silvery hair,
The Queen Mother of the West.
I see her, in her cavern home,
The Queen Mother of the West.
I see the three-legged raven who serves
the Queen Mother of the West.
~Rhapsody by Ssu-ma Hsiang-ju 179-117 B.C.E.

The west is the direction of the sun's setting and is, therefore, connected
with both sleep and death in most lands. Sleep we encounter every night, but
death we meet only once. Death is, therefore, the greatest mystery of human
life, for we cannot truly know what lies beyond that portal. Is there nothing?
Heaven and hell? Rebirth in human or other form? Something we cannot even
imagine?

Today most deaths take place in hospitals, and many people die alone, without
their loved ones with them. In the past it was quite different. Most people
witnessed many deaths before they reached the door themselves. If death was no
less mysterious, it was far more familiar. Prayers to the mother of death were
addressed, then, to someone who had visited more than once and whose features
were well known. She may be a fierce figure, the raven-haunted queen, but she
is one we cannot avoid meeting.
